The creative mind is a finicky, fragile thing. Sometimes inspiration floods the senses, prompting a flurry of productivity — some of which, if you're lucky, is actually usable if not good! At other times, it's a struggle to write so much as a word, or draw merely a line without everything feeling totally wrong. This is especially frustrating if/when you realize your mood has no impact on your process. You can be downright chipper, and not be able to produce anything of merit. Meanwhile, a low period can provoke great art if you can work through whatever it is that's dragging you down.
And then there is anxiety, the most debilitating force in the creative life. When you find yourself dealing with panic attacks that come on for seemingly no reason at all, you're constantly on guard for the next one, praying like hell that it won't hit at a...

The steel guitars are silent today as Beach Boys fans and SpongeBob SquarePants stans everywhere mourn the loss of a music giant.
Composer, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Andy Paley passed away on Wednesday from cancer complications at the age of 72. A prolific creative and producer, Paley’s fingerprints are all over music history, with credits ranging from Brian Wilson’s solo work to the Ramones’ records to the scores of numerous animated shows, including SpongeBob SquarePants. Paley first broke into the business as one-half of the power-pop duo The Paley Brothers alongside his brother Jonathan, and throughout his nearly 50 years of service to the entertainment industry, the list of high-profile collaborators with whom Paley worked is a veritable who’s-who of the most important musical talents of the later 20th century.

Andy Paley, a prolific songwriter, producer and musician who collaborated with such artists as Brian Wilson, Jerry Lee Lewis, the Ramones, Madonna, Elton John, Patti Smith and Deborah Harry, and who composed the scores for SpongeBob SquarePants and other TV shows, died Wednesday, November 20, of cancer. He was 72.
“We are saddened to learn of the passing of Brian’s friend and collaborator, Andy Paley,” a post on Brian Wilson’s official Facebook page reads. “Andy was literally instrumental in Brian starting his solo career with his critically acclaimed 1988 album, Brian Wilson. Andy played electric and acoustic guitars, bass, drums, percussion, keyboards, harmonica, and provided backing vocals. He co-wrote three of the songs, including “Rio Grande.” Andy collaborated again with Brian on the legendary, unreleased Wilson-Paley Sessions, counting more than twenty songs. Brian always called him ‘The Genius Andy Paley.’ Love and mercy goes out to Andy’s family and friends.

Strange but true: The Beatles’ American record company decided not to release their albums. Instead, Capitol chopped them up to generate more product. Nobody at the label had any idea that future generations would revere these records as sacred artistic units. No, Capitol just wanted to squeeze more funny paper out of the moptops before the bubble burst. So they doled out 12 songs per LP instead of 14, and rushed out seven albums in a year. American fans got different versions than the rest of the world. The U.S. albums have been forgotten by history,...

A former sound engineer who coauthored a 2012 memoir about his days working on the Fleetwood Mac album Rumours has filed a lawsuit, along with his coauthor of the book Making Rumours, against the makers of Broadway’s smash hit play Stereophonic, alleging that playwright David Adjmi relied on portions of Making Rumours in the creation of the similarly themed Broadway play.
Stereophonic, the suit states, “copies the heart and soul of Making Rumours, and is substantially similar.”
Stereophonic is perhaps best described as a roman a clef of Fleetwood Mac and the mid-’70s making of what would be their 1977 masterpiece Rumours. The play, which does not use the band members’ names or songs, fashions its characters and situations in ways that align closely to Mac’s classic line-up of Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie, Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. The troubled recording of their seminal album, which endured months of romantic break-ups,...

Al Jardine, multi-instrumentalist and co-founder of The Beach Boys, has unearthed a new song titled “Wish.”
The track was written by Jardine in the early 1990s alongside his songwriting partner, Larry Dvoskin. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Jardine described “Wish” as an ode to the Wilson brothers and his Beach Boys bandmates, Brian and Dennis. “It just dawned on me how much I missed them,” Jardine said about writing the track. “Dennis, of course, had passed, and Brian was pretty much out of the action. I felt very emotional.”

“Every day’s a blessing/Every day’s a problem,” Sarah Tudzin sings on her fourth album, Power. If the sentiment is ambivalent, the sound is anything but: a sharp power-pop bounce that opens up into a radiant chorus. Tudzin, a Los Angeles singer-songwriter-producer-multi-instrumentalist who has been recording as Illuminati Hotties since the late 2010s, has called her openhearted DIY ethos “tenderpunk.” As a producer and recording engineer she’s worked with artists from Weyes Blood to Coldplay, and won a Grammy for her production on Boygenius’ 2023 landmark, The Record.

The Beach Boys emerged from Southern California with an infectious sound that perfectly captured carefree summers by the shore. Starting in the early 1960s, Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Carl Wilson, and Dennis Wilson created vocal harmonies and surf rock anthems that evoked imagery of the sun, sand, and freedom. Their music became inextricably linked to hot days, cool ocean waves, and memories of youth. Over a career spanning three decades, the band brewed hits like “Surfin’ USA,” “Good Vibrations,” and “Kokomo,” cementing their status as ambassadors of California culture and pioneers of the pop genre.
Now, a new documentary directs its lens on the legendary group’s history. Directed by Frank Marshall and Thom Zimny, “The Beach Boys” charts the band’s rise from a garage venture to worldwide superstardom. Kim Deal, of The Breeders, has released a new solo single called “Coast.”
Her first solo release in nearly a decade — and the first released via 4Ad under her own name — “Coast” was written in 2020 after Deal was inspired by hearing a wedding band cover Jimmy Buffett’s “Margaritaville” with “revelatory levels of low self-esteem.” From there, she reflected on her memories of summers spent on Nantucket, where the youth would “check the Wam” for surfing conditions, and produced an insightful set of lyrics, with lines like, “Clearly all of my life I’ve been foolish/ Tried to hit hard but I blew it/ But it don’t even matter/ It’s just just human to want a way out/ It’s human to wanna win.”

Musically, “Coast” has a steady, mid-tempo groove, with a sing-song melody that comes across almost like a Brian Wilson composition.

The new Disney+ documentary “The Beach Boys” is one in a long line of both documentary and narrative features focusing on The Beach Boys and their associates, many of which have focused on the troubled genius at the band’s center, Brian Wilson. What sets “The Beach Boys” apart is the attention given to the band as a whole; while Brian’s contribution is respectfully acknowledged and explored, his brothers Dennis and Carl get equal time — along with other band members like Mike Love, Al Jardine, and the guest players who rotated in and out of the band. There’s also a rich sense of context in terms of what The Beach Boys meant to their era and to the musicians who came afterward, thanks to a wealth of carefully selected archival footage and contemporary interviews with musicians like Janelle Monae and One Republic’s Ryan Tedder.

The Beach Boys‘ songs were great, but they didn’t have a tremendous amount of influence on mainstream music like The Beatles had. Very few mainstream groups could be classified as Beach Boys wannabes. Despite this, one band crafted a hit Beach Boys homage so good that it’s easy to mistake it for the real thing.
The Beach Boys clearly inspired a 1970s song
The Beach Boys ruled the 1960s but the 1970s were much harder on them. Aside from a bad cover of Chuck Berry’s “Rock and Roll Music,” they didn’t have much of a commercial impact. Some fans say that’s because the quality of popular music took a radical downward shift in the 1970s, so much so that the radio had no room for new Beach Boys songs. Others would say The Beach Boys’ 1970s output wasn’t good or commercial enough for the pop charts.

If Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer on most Americans’ calendars, then it makes sense that the real tentpole kicking off tent season for a lot of people is not “Furiosa” or “Garfield” but “The Beach Boys,” a streaming documentary devoted to the least wintery group of all time.
The Disney+ film, co-directed by music-doc stalwarts Frank Marshall and Thom Zimny, focuses on the first decade and a half, in the 1960s and ’70s, of the career of the rock band that still might rightfully be considered America’s greatest all-time group. It starts with their unusual, pre-Beatles melding of complex Four Freshmen harmonies with surf music and themes; continues on through the ground-breaking work of the “Pet Sounds” era that led to a friendly rivalry with the Beatles; covers the complicated years when musical architect Brian Wilson physically and psychologically retreated, leaving the group to seek...

Some of The Beach Boys‘ hits made it all the way to No. 1, but the overwhelming majority did not. Some of their most important tunes got nowhere close. Here’s a look at five tunes that didn’t get as much love as they deserved.
1. ‘California Girls’
One of the best summer jams of all time, “California Girls,” only peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. While Mike Love’s lyrics are cute and sweet, the real star of the song is Brian Wilson’s production, especially the opening riff. Pop music has rarely been as complex or beautiful as the intro to “California Girls.”
The tune also helped cement California’s sun and fun image. Katy Perry nicked the title of this tune for her own track “California Gurls,” which reuses the line “I wish they all could be California girls.” While Perry’s song is great, it doesn’t compare to the original.

The Beach Boys are back.
The seminal American band, responsible for such tunes classics as “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “Surfin’ U.S.A.” and “Good Vibrations,” originally consisting of brother Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine, are getting the feature-length rock doc treatment. And with good reason – the story of The Beach Boys, a band known for their sunny disposition, is fraught with tragedy, disloyalty and acrimony. But all of that pain went into their music, creating something simultaneously euphoric and melancholy. And it will all make for a very juicy documentary – just in time for summer!

When does “The Beach Boys” come out?
“The Beach Boys” premiered Friday, May 24. Just in time for the long Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial kick-off to summer.
Is “The Beach Boys” streaming or in theaters?

When you sit down to watch a documentary about the Beach Boys, you know what you want: to be immersed in the California dreamin’ of the group’s early surfin’-hit days, in the jaunty beauty of songs like “I Get Around” and “Help Me Rhonda” and “All Summer Long,” and in the story of how Brian Wilson began to figure out a way to turn pop songs into miniature symphonies. You want to be immersed in the recording of “Pet Sounds,” in the Beach Boys’ rivalry with the Beatles, in the derailed masterpiece that was “Smile,” and in how Brian’s mental and emotional problems began to tear himself and the group apart. You want to know how the other Beach Boys, caught in the wilderness, found a way to put the group back together, though it’s almost like they became a different group. You want to see...

They were ‘America’s band’, with a run of golden-hued songs – but Disney’s documentary ignores the darker side of their extraordinary story
Early on in this latest of Disney’s stream of blockbuster rock documentaries, there is a brief but telling moment. It is July 1976, the year of the US bicentennial, and the Beach Boys are taking the stage before a vast stadium of cheering fans in Anaheim, California. It is ostensibly a moment of triumph for “America’s band”, as the announcer calls them. Over the preceding couple of years, the Beach Boys’ long-waning commercial fortunes have been unexpectedly restored by a chart-topping compilation of their early hits called Endless Summer. Moreover, the band’s errant mastermind Brian Wilson has been reputedly restored to full fitness after years of drug abuse and mental health problems (“Brian Is Back!” claims a promotional campaign that summer). “I like it, I like it,...

Brian Wilson‘s daughters shared an update on their father at the premiere of the new Disney+ Beach Boys documentary on Tuesday night (May 21). Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at the event at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, Carnie Wilson and Wendy Wilson opened up about their dad’s health following his diagnosis with a neurocognitive disorder and being placed under a court conservatorship earlier this year. “He is doing great! He is doing great. Everyday he is in physical therapy. I’m cooking for him, he’s spending a lot of time with his children now, his family,” Carnie said. “I’m so happy he’s here tonight.” Brian appeared in a wheelchair at the red carpet event and was reunited with his Beach Boys bandmates David Marks, Al Jardine, Blondie Chaplin, Mike Love, and Bruce Johnston. Beach Boys co-founder and virtuoso songwriter-producer Brian Wilson was placed under a conservatorship this week, following a petition from his family after his wife, Melinda Ledbetter, died in January.
Wilson, 81, who was diagnosed with a “major neurocognitive disorder,” was placed under the conservatorship at a Tuesday hearing overseen by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Gus T. May. The hearing was the culmination of a series of proceedings initiated by Wilson’s family and friends after Ledbetter, who famously extracted Wilson’s affairs from his former psychologist via a court-ordered separation and then became his manager, died at their Beverly Hills home on Jan. 30.
“I find from clear and convincing evidence that a conservatorship of the person is necessary,” May said at Thursday’s hearing, according to the minutes viewed by The Hollywood Reporter.

Updated with latest: At a hearing today, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Gus T. May placed Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson in a conservatorship. The arrangement is to be overseen by the 81-year-old musician’s longtime publicist Jean Sievers and manager LeeAnn Hard.
“I find from clear and convincing evidence that a conservatorship of the person is necessary,” said May at the hearing.
Wilson has reportedly consented to the conservatorship.
A doctor’s statement in the filing said that Wilson suffers from a “major neurocognitive disorder,” is taking medication for dementia and “is unable to properly provide for his own personal needs for physical health, food, clothing, or shelter.”
His wife, Melinda Ledbetter Wilson, died in January.

The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson has been placed under a court-ordered conservatorship after it was recently revealed that he is suffering from dementia.
As Rolling Stone reports, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Gus T. May has put Wilson’s longtime publicist and manager, Jean Sievers, and longtime business manager, LeeAnn Hard, in charge of the conservatorship. It applies to Wilson’s personal and medical affairs, and requires that his children be consulted on all major healthcare decisions.
As requested by Wilson’s eldest offspring, Carnie Wilson Bonfiglio and Wendy Wilson Knutson, “all of Brian’s children who wish to be added will be added to the text chain from his nurses providing updates about Brian.” Sievers and Hard will also be required to run “all material healthcare decisions” by Wilson’s children.

“Be My Baby” is as universal as a pop song can be. It’s the song that made Ronnie Spector a timeless rock & roll legend, a teenage girl from Spanish Harlem who packed a lifetime of raw power into three minutes. Ever she belted out “Be My Baby” in 1963, it’s been the classic that sums up the whole Sixties girl-group era, with Phil Spector’s lavish Wall of Sound production. But it’s never left the airwaves. The Beach Boys‘ Mike Love is sometimes seen as a critical member of his band, but some fans and critics feel his talents are minimal compared to another Beach Boy. Notably, Love said he wrote most of The Beach Boys’ first song. That song clearly paved the way for many other Beach Boys songs about the same topic.
Mike Love explained the origin of the hook from The Beach Boys’ 1st song
During a 2020 interview with American Songwriter, Love was asked to name his favorite memory from The Beach Boys’ early days. “The most dominant memory would be when we did our first recording, ‘Surfin’,'” he said. “We had gone to a producer in Hollywood at the suggestion of my Uncle Murry, and we sang a song or two but they wanted something a little different than just a guy singing some song that preexisted.

To the average listener hearing Jessica Pratt for the first time, it’s possible to mistake her for an artist from a different era. Her music sounds decades old, like an obscure artist unearthed from the dusty bin of a Midwestern antique shop. But this is not the Langley Schools Music Project, and Pratt is no Connie Converse. Born in 1987, the Los Angeles musician has been surprising people with her otherworldly indie folk since 2012. And now she’s returned with her fourth album, Here in the Pitch, out May 3 via Mexican Summer.

The Beach Boys and The Monkees will forever be remembered as two of the best pop bands ever — even if they constantly get compared to The Beatles. During their peak era, The Beach Boys and The Monkees had the same number of chart-topping singles. One band managed to have another chart-topper years later.
The Beach Boys and The Monkees both evolved from bubblegum to psychedelia
The Beach Boys did very well for themselves in the 1960s. The Billboard Book of Number 1 Hits says they had three No. 1 singles during that decade. They were “I Get Around,” “Help Me, Rhonda,” and “Good Vibrations.” Those songs encapsulate the band’s pea period pretty well. The first two show off the band’s bubblegum/doo-wop side, while “Good Vibrations” is one of their prime psychedelic experimentations.
