For nearly half a century, being right felt wrong to Carol Wilson. A member of the British soccer squad that participated in the Women’s World Cup in Mexico in 1971, Wilson uses the doc “Copa 71” to describe how she “remembered thinking I’m never going to see anything like this again.” In James Erskine and Rachel Ramsay’s brisk and rousing history of the tournament, few can say that they’ve even seen it when footage of the event was buried in archives for years, all but erased from collective memory. Why? The doc suggests the reasons were rooted in both misogyny and economics, seeing as how the Federation Int’l Football Association disapproved of the games as a rare major soccer event they had no control over — at least, not until starting their own women’s tournament in 1991.
What’s more fascinating than why the event isn’t...

It’s one thing to ask a casual soccer fan if they’ve ever heard of the 1971 Women’s World Cup and hear a “No.” It’s another to get the same response from two-time World Cup champion and two-time Olympic gold-medalist Brandi Chastain. Yet that’s how Rachel Ramsay and James Erskine’s documentary Copa 71 begins. They lead the American superstar to the obvious answer about how she actually played in the “first” Women’s World Cup in 1991, then show her two-decades-old footage from the 110,000-seat Azteca Stadium and blow her mind.
With the help of historian David Goldblatt to contextualize the patriarchal and greedy stance of the FIFA organization at that time––and today, considering all that happened in Qatar––this film finally gives a definitive account of what happened to both allow such an event like Copa ‘71 to occur and let it be completely forgotten. The trendsetting athletes from Mexico,...

The new documentary Copa 71 begins with co-director Rachel Ramsay talking with soccer legend Brandi Chastain about the first Women’s World Cup.
“Which was when?” Ramsay asks.
“1991,” Chastain says with confidence. She was, after all, there.
Following recent documentary convention, Ramsay hands Chastain an iPad and presses play. Chastain sees grainy footage of a packed stadium.
“It’s a men’s football match?” Chastain asks. Players come out on the pitch. They’re women.
“What?” Chastain says with a smile. Incredulous, she asks Ramsay what year the footage was from. It’s 1971.
Chastain ponders, “Why didn’t I know about this? It makes me very happy and quite infuriated, to be honest with you.”
It’s a great moment. It’s also a contrived moment, one of the few in Ramsay and James Erskine’s terrifically satisfying documentary, which thrives not on “Gotcha!” surprises or affected reenactments, but on a wonderful simplicity.

If you’re a fan of soccer – or, in most of the world, a fan of the game they know as football – you probably recall some details from this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup tournament held in Australia and New Zealand. If you’re a follower of the Spanish women’s team, for instance, you no doubt remember that they beat England to win the tournament; if you root for the U.S. team, you probably remember (but want to forget) that they barely made it out of the first round and were eliminated in the 16th, becoming the first defending champion not to make the semi-finals.
But fan or not, you likely know nothing at all about the 1971 Campeonato de Fútbol Femeni, known unofficially as the 1971’s Women’s World Cup. At the beginning of “Copa 71,” a documentary about the tournament that screened Thursday on the...

In August 1971, more than 100,000 football fans packed Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium for a historic tournament. Teams from England, France, Denmark, Argentina and Italy flew in for 21 days of matches alongside Mexico’s national team, while eager sponsors lined up for a piece of the action. The players, who received a hero’s welcome wherever they went, might as well have been the Rolling Stones.
They were, in fact, a group of around 100 women — many of them teenagers — taking part in a pioneering unofficial Women’s World Cup. And just as quickly as they tasted fame, it was snatched away as the tournament was all but erased from football history.

Alex pays a fond return revisit to 1960s classic TV series, The Avengers...
Stylish crime fighting, despicable evil masterminds, a bowler-hatted old Etonian gentleman spy and a series of beautiful leather cat-suited, kinky-booted, no-nonsense heroines. The Avengers had all this and more. What began as a monochrome tape series in January 1961 ran the whole of the Sixties, becoming a colourful slice of period hokum, full of flair, wit and sophistication, yet with its tongue firmly in its cheek.
Always the perfect gentleman, John Steed was played by Patrick Macnee. Originally billed second to the late Ian Hendry, Macnee was still playing Steed over 15 years later when he was teamed with the youthful duo of Joanna Lumley and Gareth Hunt for The New Avengers in 1976. In the 1998 film, the role of Steed was given to Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman played Emma Peel. I will say no more about the film.

Last time on NCIS, we saw Bishop officially join the team, while we also saw Agent Fornell rekindle his romance with his ex-wife, Diane. Unfortunately for Gibbs, who was also once married to Diane, he found himself dragged into their relationship drama. Watching Gibbs and Tony walk in on Diane and Fornell in a hotel room was hilarious, indeed!
This episode of NCIS, titled "Homesick," has the team racing against time to find a cure for a mysterious illness that is affecting children from military families. This episode also features guest stars Ben Vereen as Vance's father-in-law, and Meredith Eaton as Carol Wilson, Abby's friend.

Steed The Avengers
B Van Heusen
The Avengers is one of the most popular shows in British TV history. Sadly, many of the episodes from the first year of the show no longer exist. However, Big Finish — the production company behind the Doctor Who audio stories — are bringing the lost episodes back to life.
Production is under way on audio adaptations of the original season one scripts. Writer John Dorney has adapted the stories for the new format. Julian Wadham (Father Brown) plays Steed, Anthony Howell (Foyle’s War) takes on the role of Dr Keel while Lucy Briggs-Owen is cast as Carol Wilson. Guest stars include Doctor Who duo Colin Baker and Sophie Aldred. The finished stories will be released on CD and in digital format early next year.

NCIS – Abby’s Friend Returns for Devil’s Triangle
In an upcoming episode of Ncsi, a friend of Abby’s (Pauley Perrette) will be making a return appearance, adding to the immense (probably an exaggeration) amount of attention Abby has been receiving this season. This Tuesday’s episode fleshes out her back-story as she uncovers a family secret. It’s always nice to get to know the lab geeks, especially one as interesting as Abby. So once the secret’s been revealed, you can start getting excited for Abby’s friend. And who is it exactly?
Abby’s friend Carol Wilson makes an appearance after first appearing in the 2009 Christmas episode. According to Tvline the same actress, Meredith Eaton, is once again portraying her. The reason for her return hasn’t been revealed, so you’ll just have to wait for the November 1st episode, titled “Devil’s Triangle”. Let...

A couple in the park to cut down a Christmas tree, find a Db in his underwear in the snow. Gibbs' (Mark Harmon) father, Jackson (Ralph Waite) turns up unexpectedly early. Gibbs asks whose fault it really is for him not being here sooner. As in years ago. Gibbs doesn't have cable and only a black and white TV, also he got rid of the guestroom too. He still has Kelly's bike. Gibbs is surprised he actually came. He needs curtains on his window, loved the snow effect. Tony (Michael Weatherly) "Man up chilly willy," he says to McGee (Sean Murray) and should embrace his inner "McGrizzly Adams." Ziva (Cote de Pablo) isn't cold and Tony refers to her as a "frigid ice queen" and she's cold blooded like a lady Komodo dragon. Ziva is wearing thermals. Good to know. Tony will give her $50 for them, well they won't fit...

It's the Christmas episode of NCIS tonight, and when the Halloween episode didn't appeal well to critics, you hope tonight's "Faith" is better. For a couple of things, Gibbs' (Mark Harmon) father is making another appearance, and so is Abby's best friend Carol Wilson, to be played by her real-life best friend Meredith Eaton. Don't you like it already?
On the episode, the team tries to solve a case involving a Reverend's son and they soon figure out he may be involved in a hate crime. Gibbs, meanwhile, tries to figure out why his father has a sudden change in behavior right before the holidays. Uh oh. As for Abby, who is obsessed with Christmas, her best friend Carol is on NCIS to grant a child a Christmas wish.
