Mark Ruffalo is returning to the stage in a one-night performance of the new play Ironweed: An Evening of Art & Humanity.

Ruffalo will star opposite Jessica Hecht in a performance set for May 17 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The play is based on William Kennedy’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, which was first published in 1983, and conceived of by Jodie Markell, who directs, and Brad Gilbert, who is the producer.

Welcome to the world of the gig economy gone quantum, literally. Lapsis, the first fictional feature from documentarian Noah Hutton posits a near future/alternative present where quantum computing has gone mainstream. And the new “ride share” is cabling, running fiber across the wilderness to link massive slab like junction boxes.

Ray (Dean Imperial) struggles to make ends meet as a driver for a shady airport delivery service. He doesn’t have a wife or kids but he does have a brother Jamie (Babe Howard) who suffers from Omnia, a chronic-fatigue like ailment. Getting him into a treatment program is well beyond his means. So, despite his technophobia and lack of physical conditioning, he turns to Cblr, one of the companies hiring “independent contractors”’ to lay cable for quantum personal computers.

Exclusive: Law & Order: Special Victims Unit has a warrant out, in a manner of speaking, for Broadway actors. Next week’s episode features Tony-nominated Hadestown actor Eva Noblezada and Beetlejuice himself Alex Brightman, and showrunner Warren Leight tells Deadline that’s just the beginning.

Last night, after the episode casting was announced, Leight tweeted, “We are trying to hire every Broadway actor we can while we and they wait for the curtains to rise again.” And he wasn’t joking.

“We know how hard the community has been hit here,” Leight said in an interview. “The goal is to get as many jobs to as many theater actors as we possibly can.”

The offer couldn’t come at a more opportune time. The National Endowment for the Arts recently released figures indicating that while the overall unemployment rate has averaged 8.5 percent, the average among actors was 52 percent.

The NBC New York-based L&o franchise has long been known as a steady source of employment for the city’s theater performers – rare is the stage actor whose Playbill credits don’t include at least one of the L&o series – but the pandemic has pushed Leight’s team to ramp up even those efforts for the current Season 22.

Stage actors already cast in parts for this season include the Tony-winning Adriane Lenox, Elizabeth Marvel, Jane Bruce (Jagged Little Pill), Jelani Alladin (Disney’s Frozen), Michael Mastro (Love! Valour! Compassion!), and Betsy Aidem (Steel Magnolias).

Even Raúl Esparza, a four-time Tony nominee known to the wider TV audience for his six-season Svu run as Assistant D.A. Rafael Barba, is making a temporary franchise comeback to reprise the role for this week’s episode “Sightless in a Savage Land.”

Leight says the Broadway-filled roles range in scope from one-day parts to more substantial turns, but have an important practical impact for the actors, adding to the work day minimums required for Actors Equity-Broadway League health insurance.

The casting offers a significant logistical benefit to the show as well: casting New York actors is the more practical and efficient option during the Covid-19 pandemic, when the prospect of long-distance flights from Hollywood and required quarantine protocols can complicate using Los Angeles-based actors.

“In the past we’ve done what you could call Hollywood stunt casting,” Leight says, “but a lot of those players aren’t going to be willing to get on a plane and quarantine right now. We realized early on that we’ll have to cast locally much more.”

The Broadway shutdown also allows the show to get around the planning issues that Broadway’s usual performance schedule demands: Coordinating a shoot around the identical eight-performance weeks of working stage actors like Noblezada and Brightman (who Leight says enact “a horribly failed virtual romance” in the Jan. 14 episode) is daunting. There’s only so much guest-starring that can be crammed into a dark Broadway Monday.

Yet another plus for the production: Stage actors, accustomed to the tightrope walk of eight shows a week, are what Leight calls “money players,” guest stars who “hit their marks and can do it over and over” quickly. With pandemic safety precautions enforced on set – minimal personal contact, Covid testing, noisy stop-and-start ventilation, among other things – the production, he says, “doesn’t have time for actors who need to find it.”

“Our directors need to know that [guest actors] can do two scenes with Olivia and not be nervous,” he adds, referring to star Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson character.

Leight himself has an extensive stage background, including his 1998 Tony-winning Best Play Side Man, a Pulitzer finalist that starred the Tony-winning Frank Wood.

And yes, Wood will be popping up on Svu this season. Leight says Svu‘s medical examiners office has been “augmented” to include a role for his old friend.

Leight’s Tuesday night tweet was met with a quick response from New York stage actors. Jennifer Mudge, whose Broadway and Off Broadway credits include Into The Woods, Rocky and The Philanthropist, tweeted, “Warren, I feel like now is the time to tell you that only Svu is missing from my L&o trifecta completion. (Mothership twice!),” to which Leight responded, “On it.”

Three-time Tony nominee Carolee Carmello tweeted a simple, “Much appreciated,” while West Side Story actor Danny Wolohan wrote, “Broadway’s Officer Krupke says thank you!”

And Chris Orbach – actor, writer, musician and, as the son of the late Jerry Orbach, a member of an L&o royal family – weighed in. “God love you,” he responded to Leight’s tweet. “You cats are good like that.”

Before Sundance gets underway, SXSW has unveiled the first wave of their film lineup. This year’s slate includes Judd Apatow’s Pete Davidson-led comedy The King of Staten Island, a new Spike Jonze-directed Beastie Boys documentary, an intriguing new film by Amy Seimetz, and more.

There’s also The Lovebirds, directed by Michael Showalter (The Big Sick) and starring Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani, whose comedic stylings coalesce astoundingly well in the first trailer. The duo play Leilani and Jibran, a couple who are accidentally embroiled in a murder mystery as a man claiming to be a cop commits murder with their car and leaves them with the evidence.

The 27th edition of the SXSW Film Festival will feature a romantic caper starring Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani, a documentary about the Beastie Boys directed by Spike Jonze, a “hidden camera” comedy headlined by Tiffany Haddish and an autobiographical studio vehicle from Pete Davidson.

Thousands of moviegoers will flock to Austin, Texas, starting on March 13 for the annual gathering, which is a launching pad for major summer — or spring — studio releases, as well as smaller independent films and buzzy TV shows.

Gordon Clapp (NYPD Blue), Bryce Pinkham (A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder) and Frank Wood (Side Man) have joined the cast of Broadway’s upcoming The Great Society, playwright Robert Schenkkan’s follow-up to his Tony-winning All The Way play about President Lyndon B. Johnson.

The new cast announcements follow last week’s news that The Great Society will begin performances Friday, September 6 at Broadway’s Vivian Beaumont Theater for a 12-week limited engagement. Brian Cox will play the 36th President of the United States.

Clapp will play J. Edgar Hoover, Pinkham will be Robert F. Kennedy and Wood has been cast as Senator Everett Dirksen.

The Great Society is the second of Schenkkan’s two-play Lbj project. Bill Rauch will direct, as he did with All The Way. The latter play won the 2014 Tony Award for Best Play and Bryan Cranston took the Tony for his lead role as Lbj.

For only the third time this decade, none of the acting winners at this year’s Tony Awards did so for their Broadway debut. This is the 21st time that this has happened over the 73-year history of these top theater honors. Most of the winners were actually on the opposite end of the spectrum, winning for the first time after years of Broadway experience and several nominations to their name including André De Shields, Celia Keenan-Bolger and Stephanie J. Tony Goldwyn will return to Broadway in Ivo van Hove’s much-anticipated production of Network, joining Bryan Cranston and Tatiana Maslany in the stage adaptation of the 1976 Oscar-winning film.

Goldwyn will play Max Schumacher, the TV exec in the midst of a mid-life crisis played by the Oscar-nominated William Holden in the film. British actor Douglas Henshall originated the role in the West End production of the play last year.

The Alamo Drafthouse chain will hold encore screenings of Wes Anderson’s animated “Isle of Dogs” on National Dog Day on Aug. 26, Variety has learned exclusively.

The screenings will be held at 25 locations and will be followed by a conversation recorded exclusively for this event between Anderson and co-star Bob Balaban. Additionally, 10% of all ticket sales for the event will be donated to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

“What a combination: the Aspca, Alamo Drafthouse, and Mr. Bob Balaban,” said Anderson. “I leapt at the chance to be a part of this little shindig and share our movie during its last days on the big screen.”

‘Isle Of Dogs’

Glasgow Film Festival 2018 will open on 21 February with the UK premiere of Wes Anderson’s stop-motion animation Isle of Dogs.

The latest film from the director of The Grand Budapest Hotel (which had its UK premiere at Glasgow Film Festival 2014) and Fantastic Mr Fox, tells the story of Atari Kobayashi, 12-year-old ward to corrupt Mayor Kobayashi.

The personal and the professional have a way of merging for the Reagans of "Blue Bloods."

Such was the case again in "Lost and Found," Friday's (Oct. 25) episode of the CBS police drama written by co-executive producer Daniel Truly. Frank (Tom Selleck) was alarmed to learn Father Markhum (Frank Wood, "The Newsroom"), the NYPD's chaplain, had been stopped for driving while intoxicated ... "the fourth time in two months," police chief Dino (John Ventimiglia) revealed.

The clergyman had rear-ended another car, and Frank worried that intervening would appear to be favored treatment -- something the arresting officer already had furnished by letting the priest sleep off his condition. And Frank realized such handling was "the reason I never heard about the other three Dwi's."

Later, Frank entered a confessional to talk to the chaplain, and told him to turn himself in: "Even priests do penance, Jerry."

If the preceding story opened the gate just a bit on the erosion of Acn's report about the alleged use of sarin gas by U.S. troops overseas, "Red Team III" -- Sunday's (Aug. 25) episode of HBO's "The Newsroom" written, as all of the show's teleplays this season have been, by series creator Aaron Sorkin -- swung that gate wide open, as network lawyer Rebecca (Marcia Gay Harden) played hardball in determining what went wrong.

Don (Thomas Sadoski) started the hour in the hot seat, squarely putting the blame on Jerry Dantana (Hamish Linklater) for the circumstances that had brought Acn "to its knees." Jerry's wrongful-termination lawsuit against the network was a prime reason behind the staff depositions, and Don appealed to Rebecca to put an end to the "insane" proceedings.

She couldn't, because of what Jerry claimed was an "institutional failure" for which he was made the scapegoat.

Daniel Algrant’s Greetings from Tim Buckley is supposed to be Penn Badgley’s revelatory moment as an actor. Playing singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley, Badgley sings live on set and sounds eerily similar to Buckley as he goes into his upper register and harmonizes in abstract ways. Unfortunately, Badgley’s performance ultimately feels empty, as does the film as a whole. Despite being focused on real, complicated people with tragic lives (both at the height of their fame, Jeff’s father Tim died at 28 from an accidental overdose and Jeff drowned at 30), the film never allows the two Buckleys to come across as fully realized characters. It’s 1991 and Jeff Buckley is living in California, a struggling musician. Out of the blue, he gets a call asking him to come to Brooklyn to perform in a tribute concert for his father, who he only met twice in his lifetime. Daniel Algrant’s Greetings from Tim Buckley is amongst the first films selected for distribution here in the UK by Tribeca Film, who have recently inked a deal to distribute six films on our shores.

The Tribeca Film Festival was first launched back in 2002, founded by Jane Rosenthal, Robert De Niro, and Craig Hatkoff. And this effectively marks the first time that Tribeca Film is crossing the Atlantic, distributing its first six films on our shores through VOD.

The long-awaited Jeff Buckley biopic stars Penn Badgley (Gossip Girl) as the 'Hallelujah' singer, and Imogen Poots as his love interest Allie.

Directed by Daniel Algrant, the film centres on the hours leading up to Buckley's legendary 1991 performance of his father's songs.

Badgley has admitted that he was not worried about taking on the role because "he knew he could play" the late musician well on screen.

Kate Nash, Frank Wood, Frank Bello, William Sadler and Norbert Leo Butz round out the cast of the drama, which is penned by first-time writers David Brendel and Emma Sheanshang.

Greetings from Tim Buckley will be released in Us cinemas and on demand on April 16, with a UK release date yet to be set.

Penn Badgley has opened up about his starring role as Jeff Buckley in Greetings From Tim Buckley. The film recounts the days leading up to Jeff's 1991 tribute concert for his late father Tim Buckley (Ben Rosenfield), also starring Imogen Poots, Kate Nash, Frank Wood, Frank Bello, William Sadler and Norbert Leo Butz. Badgley admitted to New York Magazine's Vulture that he knew he could portray the late musician on the big screen. Best known for his leading role as Dan Humphrey in Gossip Girl, Penn Badgley has been gaining in recognition on the big screen in recent years, too, starring opposite Emma Stone in the brilliant Easy A in 2010 and in the Oscar-nominated Margin Call last year.

Anthrax bassist, Frank Bello, has joined the cast of the Jeff Buckley biopic starring Penn Badgley. HitFix reports that Bello will play punk rock legend Richard Hell in the film titled Greetings from Tim Buckley. Badgley will play "a just-starting-out Jeff Buckley who performs at a 1991 tribute concert for his late father Tim." Richard Hell performed at the Tim Buckley tribute. It is not known how big of a role Bello will have in the film. Variety also reports that Frank Wood (Changeling) has joined the cast. The cast also includes Imogen Poots, Bill Sadler and U.K. singer Kate Nash.

The story deals with the lead up to the 1991 debut performance of Jeff Buckley (Penn Badgley) at his father's tribute concert at St. Ann's Church, a performance which was the springboard for his own music career.

Ben Rosenfield will play Jeff's titular father Tim in a film whose cast also includes Imogen Poots and UK pop star Kate Nash. Filling out smaller roles are the likes of Bill Sadler as guitarist Lee Underwood and Anthrax musician Frank Bello as punk innovator Richard Hell. Shooting kicks off today in New York.

Jake Scott's rival Jeff Buckley biopic meanwhile, which has the music rights from the Buckley estate, won't be using Jeff's recordings but will rather feature star Reeve Carney's voice according to Billboard.

“I’ve never had any dealings with private detectives, Mr Rosow. I’ve seen them in Bogart films, though. Was that one of those kind of jokes? Those dry, sardonic detective jokes . . .”

I knew I was going to like Noah Buschel’s The Missing Person when the opening credits rolled over a shot of a boiling coffee pot, to the gentle accompaniment of a harmonica. It reminded me of private eye Paul Newman’s sad attempts to recycle yesterday’s coffee at the beginning of Harper. Though Buschel’s droll, stylish and well-acted detective drama does have a contemporary setting, this is just one of many reminders of earlier movies about maverick investigators.

Going from a screening of .2012,. which cost $260 million into a showing of .The Missing Person. that seems to be made from pocket change leads to cognitive dissonance. Here again is an exception to the rule that you get what you pay for. This is not to say that .The Missing Person. has much to write home about, but we can allow that this picture is the preferable one to see if you have to choose between the two.

A cop picture without so much as a siren, .The Missing Person. comes at you as an intellectual, noirish production, its desaturated colors even more unattractive than black-and-white, all presumably for the purpose of announcing itself as unreconstructed noir.

Holiday festivities are about to kick into full gear, but you wouldn't know it looking at this angst-ridden release slate, since the closest we come to Christmas is Nicolas Cage's "Bad Lieutenant" doing a lot of "snow." Instead, planets are discovered, new moons rise and suns set.
