It took a village of Denis Villeneuve’s most trusted artisans to pull off “Dune: Part Two’s” epic Harkonnen arena fight scene.
As epic as its predecessor, Villeneuve’s sequel raises the bar with striking visuals. None is more jaw-dropping than Feyd-Rautha’s (Austin Butler) celebration sequence. The grand fight occurs early on in the film as the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgard) and Lady Margot Fenring (Lea Seydoux) join the inhabitants of Giedi Prime to watch. It was up to cinematographer Greig Fraser who shot the sequence on black-and-white infrared to deliver Villeneuve’s vision.
Fraser was no stranger to using infrared lighting.
He had used it on 2012’s “Zero Dark Thirty” and 2016’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” “It’s the same light the security camera uses, and you don’t see it. So, my fascination with infrared started because our eyes can’t see it,...

Plot: Set 23 years after the original story which inspired it, The Machine finds Bert Kreischer facing familial crisis and the arrival of his estranged father when the ghost of his booze-soaked past arrives: a murderous mobster hellbent on kidnapping Bert back to the motherland to atone for his crimes. Together, he and his father must retrace the steps of his younger self in the midst of a war between a sociopathic crime family while they attempt to find common ground.
Review: This weekend boasts two theatrical films featuring stand-up comedians with dedicated fanbases in stories about their relationship with their father. Both Sebastian Maniscalco and Bert Kreischer have performed elements of the stories at the core of their big-screen adventures, but the results could not be further apart. While About My Father is a wholesome bromance centered on the culture clash of two families, The Machine is a balls-to-the-wall action...

It's the 10th anniversary of the best post-2000 Bond movie. Sam Mendes' 2012 spy film "Skyfall" is the twenty-third in the long-running series of James Bond movies, an atmospheric masterwork that features Daniel Craig's third performance as the fictional MI6 agent.
"Skyfall" sees Bond re-entering into MI6 service after his assumed shooting death and taking on a mission which sends him to the brave new world of Shanghai in pursuit of a mercenary known as Patrice (Ola Rapace), the man for whom the bullet that wounded Bond was intended for. Bond is tasked by his MI6 superior M (Judi Dench) to find Patrice, the sensitive hard drive he holds, and information about his mysterious employer. The ensuing confrontation is gorgeously lit and impeccably shot under the supreme lens of cinematographer Roger Deakins; the two men fight in silhouette, backlit by LED panels of bright, glowing jellyfish, and few words are...

In the 1980s and 1990s, three promising young kung fu fighters trained with the notorious Sifu Cheung (Roger Yuan), becoming his only official disciples. However, their story didn’t have a great outcome; currently the so-called Three Tigers have other concerns, kung fu is a mere memory for them. Danny (Alain Uy) is a divorced father, more focused on his day job than on his little son (Joziah Lagonoy). Hing (Ron Yuan) gained weight and never fully recovered from an accident that damaged one of his legs. Jim (Mykel Shannon Jenkins) is the Tiger who has stayed in better shape, though he now practices Brazilian jiu jitsu. Our protagonists meet again after their former teacher and father figure passes away, apparently of a heart attack, although...

The Columnist (Ivo van Aart)
Never read the comments—a universal rule for all writers who publish, share, or create on the internet. No matter what you say or how you say it, there will always be a troll ready to disparage your work or you personally. They don’t need a reason beyond their ability to do so. They don’t need a salient point either. And it’s precisely because they possess neither that they ultimately live rent-free inside the minds of everyone they attack with artificial anonymity. One doesn’t even have to read their words to feel their pain because knowing they exist eats at you regardless.

The first thing you should know about Tran Quoc Bao’s “The Paper Tigers” is that his low-budget kung fu comedy — the heartfelt tale of three arthritic middle-aged Seattle men reuniting to avenge the murdered sifu who mentored them as teenagers — is often just as winning and delightful as you would hope from its premise. Unfolding like , Tran’s debut feature delivers a ton of charm for a kung fu throwback, and kicks a lot of ass for a broad comedy about some old guys relearning how to honor each other and fight for themselves.
If “The Paper Tigers” sags around the middle and loses its focus as it limps towards a finale that doesn’t hit with the force that it should, well, perhaps that’s to be expected from a martial arts movie whose heroes can’t throw a punch without pulling a muscle.

With only a couple of clicks of the dial and a little dash of hybrid vigor, the hackneyed can be made fresh again, a point proven by Tran Quoc Bao’s silly and special little kung fu comedy “The Paper Tigers.” Balancing the naive structure of an old Shaw Brothers movie (a vengeance mission with an escalating series of fights en route to the Big Boss showdown) with the kind of male-midlife-comedy schtick that bought Judd Apatow a house or six, Tran’s irresistibly good-humored debut is a diverting blend of Hong Kong and Hollywood that delivers, on a slender, Kickstarter-enhanced budget, a rousing roundhouse hug to both traditions.
Danny (Alain Uy), Hing (Ron Yuan) and Jim (Mykel Shannon Jenkins) have become estranged in the 25 years since they were “The Three Tigers,” disciples of kung fu master Sifu Cheung (Roger Yuan) — scenes that play out with younger actors in lovingly re-created garage VHS footage.

Did you play a sport as a kid? Do you still play it now? No matter how much they enjoy themselves, no matter how hard they're initially willing to work, most people drop out. That's true even when what they're doing goes beyond physical training, when it's about a commitment to a way of life. Danny (Alain Uy) and Hing (Ron Yuan) haven't practised martial arts for years. They're middle aged, out of shape and out of the habit of solving their problems with action. But when their old sifu (Roger Yuan) dies and they suspect that he's been murdered, they track down old pal Jim (Mykel Shannon Jenkins) to become the Three Tigers once more and set off in pursuit of justice.

Like the warring Japanese dojos depicted throughout the Karate Kid franchise, a growing disconnect exists between those who wish to learn a fighting style as a means of physical and emotional growth and those who simply seek the ability to punish their adversaries without mercy. It’s respect and honor versus strength and superiority—something even the most devout and sacred of Chinese Kung Fu masters like Sifu Cheung (Roger Yuan) can’t always instill in their pupils. No matter how much they strive to trust the younger generation’s capacity to protect what they’ve learned as a tool, the allure of morphing it into a weapon for profit is often too much to ignore. It’s why he retired after his three disciples left. The disappointment was too much to bear.

Fans of both Hawaii Five-0 and Hawaii Five-o are due for some déja vu when the current CBS series pays homage to the original — as seen in this exclusive photo from the Season 9 opener.
To mark the franchise’s 50th anniversary, Five-0 is retelling the story from the 1968 pilot, which ran in two parts and was titled “Cocoon.” As such, showrunner Peter M. Lenkov got to share a writing credit with the late Leonard Freeman, creator of the original series.

Jason Bourne was one of the highlights of the summer this year, and the film is hitting soon on Digital and Blu-Ray/DVD, including 4K Ultra HD, and it’s one of the definite buys of the next few months.
The release has plenty of bonuses, including several Bts featurettes, and while it doesn’t have a commentary track, it looks to have quite a lot of interview coverage that possibly manages a lot of what we might get from one anyway.

Today Netflix released the third trailer for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny. In it, we can see Michelle Yeoh (starring as Yu Shu Lien) who obviously didn’t get tired of kicking ass and showing everyone who's boss. The video also shows off some awesome choreography and edgy swordplay.
Sword of Destiny is directed by Woo-Ping Yuen and features Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Lady), Donnie Yen (Ip Man 1 & 2), Harry Shum Jr. (Glee), Jason Scott Lee (Seventh Son), Roger Yuan (Bulletproof Monk), Eugenia Yuan (Revenge of the Green Dragons), and newcomer Natasha Liu Bordizzo.
The movie is set to debut on the streaming service on February 26th.

"The fight to keep a great warrior's sword from an evil warlord will change them in ways they never imagined." Netflix has unveiled another trailer, the third one they've released, for the sequel Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny directed by martial arts choreographer & stuntman Yuen Woo-ping. Michelle Yeoh is back as Shu Lien, along with a cast including Donnie Yen, Harry Shum Jr., Jason Scott Lee, Eugenia Yuan, Juju Chan, Chris Pang, Darryl Quon and Roger Yuan. There's something rather dispiriting surrounding Netflix's "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword Of Destiny." The sequel to Ang Lee's Oscar-winning "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" isn't arriving with much buzz, and seems to have a faint direct-to-video vibe (it will be released on a small handful of IMAX screens at the same time it hits the streaming service), and even by this third trailer, it's failing to drum up much excitement. Read More: 5 Unnecessary, Unwanted Sequels That Bit The Dust & 5 More That Are Somehow Getting Made Michelle Yeoh reprises her role as Yu Shu-Lien, and she's joined by Donnie Yen, Harry Shum Jr, Jason Scott Lee, Roger Yuan, Eugenia Yuan, and Natasha Liu Bordizzo in the movie that is about a battle over a sword. One that, perhaps, involves destiny. Again, there is something rather bland about this whole affair... "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword Of Destiny" arrives this Friday.

Ahead of its premiere in late February, Netflix has today revealed the action-packed first trailer for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword Of Destiny, and I hope you’re sitting comfortably.
Taking up the reins from Ang Lee, the sequel formerly known as The Green Legend is directed by Yuen Woo-Ping, the esteemed fight choreographer who served on the original film, and his flair for slick, physics-defying action sequences shines through in today’s first look teaser. Out of the cast that starred in the beloved original, only Michelle Yeoh’s Yu Shu-Lien returns for the direct-to-streaming sequel, who fights with every fibre in her being to prevent a legendary sword from falling into the grubby hands of a malevolent warlord.

Netflix is firmly behind Sword of Destiny, having brokered a deal with The Weinstein Company, though whether feature length sequel can possibly recapture the genre-defining spirit of Lee’s...

Zoolander and My Big Fat Greek Wedding won’t be the only films from the early aughts getting a sequel early next year. The Weinstein Company recently went ahead with production on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny, the sequel to Ang Lee‘s Oscar-winning 2000 film, albeit with no involvement from the director. Instead, it comes from Yuen Woo-ping, the accomplished choreographer behind The Matrix, and numerous Jackie Chan films.
The first trailer has now landed today, which comes from Netflix, where it’ll get a day-and-date release in early February, along with — on the other side of a spectrum — an IMAX run. As the synopsis reads, “The fight to keep a great warrior’s sword from an evil warlord will change them in ways they never imagined.”

Exclusive: Netflix has firmed plans to release its first batch of theatrical-quality films. The streaming service’s feature film initiative begins with the October 16 release of Beasts Of No Nation, the drama about a child soldier torn from his family and pressed into fighting a civil war in an African country. The film is directed by True Detective‘s Cary Fukunaga and stars Idris Elba as a warlord who mentors the young man (played by Abraham Attah). Based on the novel by Nigerian author Uzodinma Iweala, Beasts will be released on Netflix in all territories, and on the same day it will be released in select U.S. theaters by distributor Bleecker Street. That will qualify the film for awards-season consideration. Amy Kaufman and Fukunaga produced with Daniela Taplin Lundberg, Riva Marker, Dan Crown and Elba. Jeff Skoll, Jonathan King, Laura Bickford and Donna Guiliatti are executive producers.

There is a dark place in movie hell reserved for the beast known as the “video game movie”. There have been some that really aren’t that bad, take Doa: Dead or Alive as an example or Silent Hill. They knew how to keep things fun without being too cheesy in the process. Double Dragon has been released on Blu-ray, and thankfully when it was first released I managed to miss it. Given enough time for nineties cheese to become funny and for bad B-movies to become popular, can it be redeemed as an eccentric cult-hit?

To quote Emma Stone, "It's like you're Photoshopped!"Country superstar Tim McGraw flaunted his incredibly ripped torso on Twitter on Monday, in a photo showing him flying around on one of those crazy water jet pack things."Here's how I'm spending St. Patrick's Day," he captioned the pic, where it's pretty hard to notice anything but that washboard stomach. Did we mention is 46? McGraw has been working out a lot in recent years, maintaining a 40 pound weight loss by training with martial arts expert/stunt man Roger Yuan ... the same guy who got Daniel Craig into James Bond shape!Between that and his sober lifestyle, Tim is definitely in a healthy place these days -- and it looks good on him. Last we heard from Dustin Nguyen’s Vietnamese martial arts epic “Once Upon a Time in Vietnam” (aka “Lua Phat”), the actor/director was taking the film to sell to foreign types at the gathering in Frogtown. We don’t have any word on how that went, but with the film set for release in its native land this August, check out a new, final theatrical trailer for the period/martial arts/fantasy film. It looks like a cross between a Chinese Wuxia movie and a Western. Reminds me a bit of Scott Stewart’s “Priest”, actually. You don’t have to be a longtime fan of Nguyen from his “21 Jump Street” days to appreciate that this thing looks mighty good. Really, really good. But hey, it certainly doesn’t hurt. Harry Ioki done grew up. The plot finds Nguyen playing a warrior monk who comes to the rescue of...

There’s supposed to be a new trailer for Dustin Nguyen’s martial arts flick “Once Upon a Time in Vietnam” out very soon, but until then, check out a new poster for the film, which makes it look like it’s some kind of post-apocalyptic fantasy epic. I honestly had no idea that was the case, I thought it was just a traditional period actioner. Hunh. The film is directed by Nguyen, who also stars along with Roger Yuan (the Fiendish Dr. Wu himself) and Thanh Van Ngo as the love interest. Nguyen co-starred with Ngo in “The Rebel”, the first big Vietnamese film I ever saw him in. He played the villain in that one, ironically enough. Nguyen is in full hero mode here, though. Originally titled “Monk on Fire” (a much better title if you ask me), “Once Upon a Time in Vietnam” is due in Vietnamese...

The good news: Tim McGraw is shirtless in the new issue of People, showing off an impressive set of abs. The bad news: It takes (a lot!) of hard work to get the country star's rock-hard eight-pack. And when the 6-foot star, 45, gets ready to go out on the road, he turns up the workout to a whole new level. "No one wants to grow up to be a rock star to sing the same song over and over again in a studio," says McGraw, who has maintained a 40-lb. weight loss in recent years. "The reason you want to...

How do you prepare yourself to portray a "strange visitor from another planet" with the powers of a god? Well, if you're British actor Henry Cavill — who is currently shooting Zack Snyder's Man of Steel, in which he plays the first and greatest superhero, Superman — you first train for months on end to play a steely-sinewed mythic mortal who fights for the gods. Then you read a lot of comic books.
In a recent interview, Cavill discussed why he worked out so long and hard to play Theseus in director Tarsem Singh's Immortals, and why he didn't study Christopher Reeve's portrayal of Superman when prepping for Man of Steel.

Reed’s Bargain Bin [1] is a recurring column where Reed Farrington tells us about a movie he bought for under $5, and whether or not he regrets the purchase. For those who think that the best martial arts films are the ones that star actual martial artists, I present to you two films that defy this categorization: Dark Assassin (2006) and The Fifth Commandment (2008). I wasn’t even going to bother reviewing these two films, but after watching the behind-the-scenes documentaries on each DVD, I found out that much effort and perseverance were involved in getting these films made. So I thought I would at least offer these films some recognition even though I won’t have many good things to say about them. However, discussing these films might be of some interest. And with the recent release of Ninja Assassin, I thought there might be an interest in assassin movies. These...

After a major part of the shooting, the director and his entire crew had to hastily leave China and look for an alternative place to shoot the rest of the film. If New York is being shot in Philadelphia. Chandni Chowk To China has been shot in Bangkok. And with good reason. Says Nikhil, "It was the year of the Olympics in China and it became impossible beyond a point to shoot in the country where our film is based. Maybe a quieter less flamboyant film…but not the kind of action that Akshay has shot." Apparently, the Olympics authorities found Akshay Kumar's athletic exertions to be a bit of an intrusion in the preparations for the grand international event. Says Nikhil, "Bangkok's topography is quite similar to China.
