Netflix announces final ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ season 2 cast (Photos Provided by Netflix)

Production is currently underway on Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender season two, and the streamer just announced new additions to the cast. The eight actors round out the ensemble of the much-anticipated second season of the fantasy series.

Netflix’s “Avatar: The Last Airbender” live-action series has added eight actors to the cast of Season 2, Variety has learned exclusively.

The new cast members are: Chin Han, Hoa Xuande, Justin Chien, Amanda Zhou, Crystal Yu, Kelemete Misipeka, Lourdes Faberes, and Rekha Sharma.

Han will play Long Feng, who was the leader of Ba Sing Se secret police, the Dai Li, in the animated Nickelodeon series. Xuande will play Professor Zei, head of the anthropology department at Ba Sing Se University in the original series who was obsessed with finding Wan Shi Tong’s Library.

Chien will play King Kuei, ruler of the Earth Kingdom. Zhou will play Joo Dee, a public servant and guide for important visitors in Ba Sing Se. Yu will play Lady Beifong, Toph’s mother. Fans of children’s literature as well as children, will probably have heard of The Spiderwick Chronicles series, written by Tony Diterlizzi and Holly Black. The series follows the adventures of the Grace children, the twins Simon and Jared, and their older sister Mallory after they move into the Spiderwick Estate and discover a mysterious fantasy world they had not known about. The main series consists of five books, with three additional books that form the Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles series.

The book series was first adapted into movie format in 2008, when The Spiderwick Chronicles was released, receiving generally positive reviews but that was it at the time. Animation for children deserves more respect, especially lately. In an industry that values profits over artistic risks, kids' animation remains a dismissible art form, and the intelligence of its audience is often underestimated. Netflix’s first cancellation in January 2022 was “Gentefied,” a half-hour dramedy about three Mexican-American cousins chasing the American Dream in Los Angeles that ran for two seasons.

The Baby-Sitters Club could return to the small screen. cancelled the series in March after two seasons on the streaming service, but two big wins at the Children & Family Emmys are bringing new attention to the series. The series won awards for outstanding writing for a live-action preschool or children’s program and outstanding children’s or family viewing series.

The show, starring Sophie Grace, Malia Baker, Momona Tamada, Shay Rudolph, Kyndra Sanchez, Vivian Watson, Anais Lee, Alicia Silverstone, Mark Feuerstein, and Marc Evan Jackson, is based on the book series by Ann M. Martin.

Could “The Baby-Sitters Club” be making a comeback? The series was canceled by Netflix after two seasons earlier this year in March, and talk has swirled since about the series being shopped for a revival — or at least a TV movie — elsewhere.

The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences on Tuesday announced nominations for the first-ever Children’s and Family Emmy Awards, to be presented Dec. 10 and 11 at the Wilshire Ebell Theater in Los Angeles. These awards mark the first stand-alone expansion of the Emmys since 1979.

“Putting a spotlight on children’s & family programming after years of unparalleled growth in content quality and quantity in this space is an exciting moment for the television industry,” said Adam Sharp, President and CEO of NATAS, in a press statement. “These programs entertain, inform and educate family members of all ages, and NATAS is proud to mark this milestone event and give these creators the stage they deserve.”

Netflix leads the pack of nominated streamers and networks by a landslide, with a whopping 83 nominations that sees recognition for popular family offerings like Heartstopper and The Baby-Sitters Club.

Paramount+ today announced Wednesday that Secret Headquarters was its most-watched original movie in the first seven days since debuting exclusively on the streamer Aug. 12.

The claim was made, however, without offering any numbers. Like most streamers — Netflix is an exception — Paramount+ does not disclose viewership data publicly.

Starring Owen Wilson, Secret Headquarters is a high-concept family action film produced by Paramount Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films. It was originally intended for theaters but was instead sent straight to Paramount+ as a way to entice new subscribers, as well as keep existing customers satisfied.

“Secret Headquarters has rocketed to superhero status on Paramount+ as a must-watch summer family film, breaking the viewership record for an original movie in the first week of release,” said Domenic Dimeglio, executive vp and chief marketing officer of Paramount Streaming.

Secret Headquarters is a rare Superhero flick that isn’t based on a previous IP. It comes from an idea by writer Christopher Yost, who has penned MCU films and an episode of The Mandalorian. It is directed by the team Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman.

Obviously, the adult stars of the movie are more recognizable, but Wilson’s character’s son and his friends will also reportedly have major parts in the movie. The children in this film are played by Walker Scobell, Keith L. Williams, Momona Tamada, Kezii Curtis and Abby James Witherspoon.

The archetypal portrayal of heroic fathers is one of good, upstanding men teaching the sons who look up to them fundamental life lessons. But writer-directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman (“Catfish”) expand on this conceit in “Secret Headquarters,” their family-friendly feature for the Paramount+ streaming service. Between the sprawling MCU, countless remakes and franchises, and even video game movies, it feels like Hollywood’s obsession with existing IP has sucked all the creative air out of the movie business. But original films like “Nope” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” have boasted strong box office numbers this year, igniting conversation and motivating moviegoers back into theaters. But with the highest-grossing films still overwhelmingly based on existing IP, it’s all the more refreshing when Hollywood takes a chance on an original story, especially when it comes to the usual slam dunk kids’ movies.

In The Adam Project, a disposable Netflix feature probably watched by a squillion people earlier this year despite a plot so contorted it was basically a sleep aid, young actor Walker Scobell played a kid bruised by the inattention of a workaholic dad who then died, compounding the hurt. The boy’s perception shifted after a time-space wormhole brought him face to face with his grownup self, also shedding light on his father’s integrity. Scobell again plays a disgruntled son given a sci-fi shakeup in another empty-calorie adventure, Secret Headquarters, though it’s perhaps a small mercy this time that instead of Ryan Reynolds cracking wise we get the mellower Owen Wilson alternative.

Developed from a story by co-screenwriter and frequent Marvel hired hand Christopher Yost, the film was originally slated as a Paramount theatrical release before being bumped to Paramount+ on the same date.

Exclusive: The Owen Wilson family secret superhero comedy, Secret Headquarters, will debut exclusively on Paramount+ this August in the U.S. and Canada, Deadline has learned. The Jerry Bruckheimer produced movie will also debut in select international territories where the streaming service is available.

Netflix's "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" spinoff officially has a cast. On April 5, the streaming platform confirmed that the series, "Xo, Kitty," (which will premiere in half-hour episodes) signed on nine new cast members to help tell Kitty Song-Covey's long-anticipated love story.

With "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" author Jenny Han on board as creator, writer, and executive producer of the spinoff series, we know we're going to get the same adorably awkward moments and grand gestures of romance from the second generation of Covey love stories. Netflix has canceled another series without a conclusive ending.

Deadline reports that the streaming service has canceled The Baby-Sitters Club after two seasons.

Rachel Shukert responded to the news with a statement.

"I have wanted to be a part of the world Ann M. Martin created since I was 7 years old, and for two amazing seasons I actually got to be," Shukert said, according to Deadline. 

"It was a dream come true."

"Although I am heartbroken not to be returning to Stoneybrook for 20 more seasons, I am so proud of the incredible show our amazing cast and crew created and the way it brought joy and comfort to so many when they needed it most," the statement continues.
