Directed by Meghna Gulzar, Vicky portrays the first Field Marshal, Sam Manekshaw, in the movie.

A few years ago, Aditya Dhar and Vicky Kaushal announced they would work together on a mythological superhero action film, The Immortal Ashwatthama. After the success of their 2019 film, Uri: The Surgical Strike, everyone was excited to see what the actor-director duo had planned for everyone. Vicky had even beefed up and underwent a physical transformation for the film. Sadly, the movie got shelved.

In the past two years, there have been many speculations about why The Immortal Ashwatthama got shelved. Neither the actor nor the director had said anything about it. Now, Aditya Dhar has finally revealed why they couldn’t proceed with the film. During the trailer launch of his upcoming movie Article 370, Dhar shared the real reason.

The Uri director revealed, “We have put that on the back burner right now.

“Sam Bahadur,” a biopic of Indian war hero Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, is the latest feature from Meghna Gulzar.

Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP Movies produced the film, which released theatrically in December 2023 and proved to be a box office success. The cast is led by Vicky Kaushal (“Dunki”) as Manekshaw and also includes Sanya Malhotra (“Jawan”) as his wife Silloo and Fatima Sana Shaikh as Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Gulzar’s previous films include “Talvar” (2015), starring Irrfan Khan and Konkona Sen Sharma, and “Raazi” (2018), headlined by Alia Bhatt, both of which were critical and commercial successes and “Chhapaak” (2020), featuring Deepika Padukone as an acid attack victim. Based on the life of Sam Manekshaw, the first Indian Army officer promoted to the rank of Field Marshal, Sam Bahadur stars Vicky Kaushal, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub.

In the first three days of its digital release on ZEE5 Global, the film has risen to the top position among all Hindi titles released on the South Asia-focused platform, surpassing figures for 2023 blockbusters like Gadar 2 and Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai.

The feature will be made by the director’s own Bhansali Productions and a theatrical release has been set for Christmas 2025. Plot details have yet to be revealed but the director is known for his epic filmmaking style.

In its first week, Sam Bahadur had collected 38 crore at the box office. Typically, films drop by 50% in their second week, and hence, one expected a score of 19-20 crore more to be added to the total of Vicky Kaushal‘s film.

However, the Meghna Gulzar film has done far better as 26 crore more have been added in the second week, which is quite a good hold. It isn’t as if the film was sans any competition. In fact, Animal continued to roar and brought in over 135 crore during the second week as well.

This means Sam Bahadur still didn’t have an easy way out at the theatres. However, since word of mouth around the film amongst its target audience is largely positive, the collections didn’t end up stabilizing well.

On its opening day, Sam Bahadur had collected 6.25 crores at the box office. While the weekend did some growth, especially on Saturday, weekdays have been decent with 3.50 crores each coming on both Monday and Tuesday. Now on Wednesday, too the film hasn’t dropped much, what with 3.25 crores* coming in.

The drop from Friday is still less than 50%, and that’s a good thing. That said, the collections should have stayed in the 4.50–5 crore zone throughout, as that would have given it a very good chance to have consistent numbers right until the release of Dunki and Salaar. Right now, the film is managing to stay decent, though it could have soared with a better hold. Of course, it’s getting a lot of impact from Animal because the whole clash with that film gave it good publicity to open well.

Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal has been enjoying an undisputed run at the box office, and the advance booking reports for the sixth day of Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s gangster drama suggest that the film will continue to wreak havoc. The number gods have been happy with the film, to say the least.

The gangster drama, also starring Rashmika Mandanna & Tripti Dimri, along with Anil Kapoor and Bobby Deol, brought 44.47 crore on day 4, Tuesday, and while Wednesday, day 5 is, promising another 40+ crore day, the advance booking reports of day six has also been phenomenal.

Animal has registered almost 8.89 crore gross from the advance booking (excluding blocked seats) for the sixth day, Thursday. Around 3.90 lakh tickets have been sold all over India for more than 17K shows. The Tamil and Telugu versions of the film have also contributed a fair share.

Indian patriotic films are either understated or take the jingoistic route to portray love for the country. Sam Bahadur had fair collections on Monday, as 3.50 crores came in. On Friday, the film had opened to 6.25 crores and the drop is around 50%. That said, for the film to have a really solid run, the need of the hour was for at least 4.50-5 crores to come in, while the ideal number would have been 5.50-6 crores as that would have meant a negligible fall from Monday. That hasn’t turned out to be the case.

What the Vicky Kaushal starrer needs from this point on is to stay really close to the Monday numbers right through the weekdays. However, both the superstars just created a box office trivia of sorts with the first-day collection of this clash. To offer a little context, interestingly, the first film of both of these stars’ careers had to face clashes! Ranbir Kapoor made his debut with Saawariya in 2007.

While we cannot fault Meghna Gulzar for her research work, much of the screenplay feels like the Wikipedia page on Manekshaw. We can close our eyes and listen to the narrative descriptions and know exactly what is happening on screen.

Visually, the film is eye catching but lacking that ‘epic’ quality that separates the men from the boys in an army battalion. What comes across is Sam’s unflagging spirit, his unwavering commitment to being an Indian without having to prove it with flagwaving.

Vicky Kaushal, a reasonably talented actor, is not equal to the task on hand. He tries hard to echo the original’s three Bs—bravery, benevolence and bravado. But mimicking...
