The guitar Duane Allman played on Derek and the Dominoes’ classic “Layla” recently sold at auction for $1 million.
Allman, Number Nine on Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Guitarists list, also played the 1957 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop – which had been on display at the Allman Brothers’ Big House museum in Macon, Georgia – on the Allman Brothers’ 1969 self-titled debut LP and 1970’s Idlewild South, the Macon Telegraph reports.
“Layla” was actually one of the final recordings that featured Allman playing that guitar: Soon after, the guitarist swapped it for a 1959 Les Paul.

Settling in to watch “Zz Top: That Little Ol’ Band From Texas,” you may have a burning question that applies to almost no other rock documentary, and that is: Who, exactly, are these guys? The ones behind the beards?
If you’re old enough, of course, you probably know that Zz Top started out, in 1969, as a trio of wild-and-woolly cowboy rockers who played their own brand of dirty amped-up tin-shack blues. When their first hit, the lascivious redneck boogie “La Grange,” was released in 1973, there had arguably never been a sonic blast that raw, rough, and nasty on the rock charts (though “Whole Lotta Love” and the opening riff of “Spirit in the Sky” paved the way for it). Zz Top didn’t sound like a “popular” band. They sounded like the kind of band you hear in a scuzzy Texas roadhouse, or maybe on a backwoods campus.

“I’ve tried hard to leave here but never did could,” Rodney Crowell sings in “Deep in the Heart of Uncertain Texas,” a shuffling, picturesque highlight from his latest LP Texas, a musical tribute to the Houston-born singer-songwriter’s roots. Willie Nelson, Ronnie Dunn, and Lee Ann Womack, a trio of fellow Lone Star State luminaries, join Crowell on the song’s chorus, a highlight of the new album produced by Crowell with Ray Kennedy.

In 1980, two of the biggest country-to-pop crossover acts, Ronnie Milsap and Dolly Parton, recorded for Nashville’s RCA label. Both had major hits that year — Parton with the Donna Summer-penned “Starting Over Again,” and the movie smash “9 to 5,” and Milsap with the Number One singles “My Heart,” “Cowboys and Clowns” and the poignant “Smoky Mountain Rain.” The two Hall of Fame legends come together for a moving update on “Smoky Mountain Rain,” accompanied by an animated video that captures one dream fading while another is just beginning.

The 13th Floor Elevators' Roky Erickson gave his mind and his band to psychedelics, and musicians in Texas and Beyond want more.
"You're gonna miss me when I'm gone," Roky Erickson sang on his band's biggest hit. The lead vocalist, guitarist and songwriter for the pioneering psychedelic rock band The 13th Floor Elevators was prescient. Musicians in his home state of Texas, and far beyond, are mourning a major inspiration. Erickson died in Austin, Texas, on Friday, May 31, according to Variety. The cause of death was not disclosed. Erickson was 71.
“Erickson had a visionary zeal rarely seen in 1965 when he co-founded the 13th Floor Elevators,” his management said in a statement. “The band’s original songs, many written with lyricist Tommy Hall, coupled with Erickson’s super-charged vocals and guitar, sparked the psychedelic music revolution in the mid-1960s, and led to a new role of what rock could be.

“Black Panther” composer Ludwig Göransson won the Oscar for Best Original Score at the 91st Academy Awards on Sunday night. This was Göransson’s first nomination — though he’s collaborated with director Ryan Coogler since “Fruitvale Station” — and the first time that a film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe earned a nomination in this category. The other nominees this year were Terence Blanchard (“BlacKkKlansman”), Nicholas Britell (“If Beale Street Could Talk”), Alexandre Desplat (“Isle of Dogs”), and Marc Shaiman (“Mary Poppins Returns”).
Göransson’s victory — a minor upset considering that Blanchard and Britell were favored to win, and that Desplat and Shaiman are beloved veterans in the industry — caps off a staggeringly successful year for “Black Panther,” which grossed more than $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office and landed a total of seven Oscar nominations (including Best Picture) after becoming one of the biggest cultural phenomenons of the 21st century.

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. The best things come to those who wait, and Big Ed Hurley (Everett McGill) has long been dreaming of the moment that opens Part 15 of Mark Frost and David Lynch's Twin Peaks revival. "I've been a selfish bitch to you all these years," says his one-eyed wife Nadine (Wendy Robie), who's walked a long way—a Dr. Jacoby/Dr. Amp gold, shit-digging shovel slung over her shoulder—to the cash-only Gas Farm that Ed has run for most of his life. She states the obvious: Ed is in love with Rr Diner propietor Norma Jennings (Peggy Lipton), and she, Nadine, has always stood in his way. Those days are finally over. Ed is reluctant to think of this as anything beyond another of his spouse's manic episodes.

It's a question we've been asking since the late Seventies: What exactly is David Lynch, and where the fuck did he come from?
With the ballyhooed resurrection of Twin Peaks, his legendary 1990-1991 TV series, Lynch yet again has stepped onto the cultural stage in a big way, and earned his profile as America's bullgoose weirdo. Magazine profiles once again try – and fail – to ascertain who exactly he is and what he's doing. Worse, they try to normalize him, place him within established cultural traditions and treating him like a wise man from Planet Whatzit.

Sometimes the heart wants what it wants – even when the brain knows the heart is a lust-drunk idiot. Jil Soloway's brilliant new Amazon series I Love Dick is a darkly comic parable about the crossroads of art and sex, based on Chris Krauss' beloved 1997 cerebral cult novel. Kathryn Hahn is Chris, a struggling indie filmmaker who finds herself at an artists' retreat in Marfa, Texas, where she falls under the spell of local artist Dick, played by Kevin Bacon. Chris was just planning on passing through town to drop off...

Since Merle Haggard’s death a year ago, his widow, Theresa, says the pain of the loss has been so difficult that she hasn’t been able to turn on a radio for fear of hearing his songs. “It’s been hard,” she says, “to even look at pictures because it’s been too emotional.”
All that changed on Thursday night, as she stood on stage at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena – behind her, a billboard-size portrait of her husband, in front of her, a sea of fans eager for a reminder that Hag lives on in his music.

Or would you have been just as terrified if you’d known beforehand the who, what, what-the-hell, why and where of it all? Let’s go over the key thrills and chills first, then you can vote in the poll below and hit the comments with your first impressions.

Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes, and clips and puts it all in perspective. When I was ten years old, I was sent to an overnight sports camp. It rained for the first three days. And on the third day, we all gathered in the mess hall to watch the movie Westworld, written and directed by famed novelist Michael Crichton. Perhaps it was the only VHS tape they had on hand. I don't know. All I know is I took advantage of the moment to mock the film because I felt it was incumbent on me to make my new campmates laugh before they found out I couldn't play sports. I mined my prepubescent comedy from the movie's deeply serious tone. I haven't seen Westworld since. I don't want to ruin that great memory of making jocks laugh as a kid by appreciating the movie as an adult.

The rumours sounded crazy, but it now seems they were true. You may have read the stories from earlier this year - the forthcoming Transformers: The Last Knight will take in elements of Arthurian legend, including Excalibur, horses, dragons and wizards in pointy hats. That’s pretty outlandish stuff, even for a franchise which is about alien robots from space who specialise in punching each other and disguising themselves as vehicles and household objects.

Just when you thought they couldn't get any hairier ... Zz Top's Dusty Hill switched things up in the band by playing a new instrument, but keeping the band's signature look. 17 years ago today, long before we knew the Force would have an awakening in 2015, Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace brought new tales of a galaxy far, far away to the big screen for the first time since 1983’s Return of the Jedi. It was the beginning of a much-maligned prequel trilogy that would give us Jar Jar Binks, midi-chlorians, and a love story for Anakin Skywalker. (And some good things! Don’t forget podracing! And Darth Maul!) Ultimate backlash didn’t stop audiences eager for a new Star Wars movie from turning out in droves, though: Phantom Menace was 1999’s highest grossing film, and all three prequel films ended up earning over $2.5 billion at the worldwide box office. Revenge of the Sith was also released on the 19th of May. Today marks 11 years since the prequel conclusion hit theaters worldwide, after premiering at – believe it or not – the Cannes Film Festival.

Zz Top is postponing their tour due to injury. Bassist Dusty Hill tripped before the band's show at the Lone Star Events Center in Lubbock, Texas on Thursday and fractured his shoulder, requiring the band to postpone their tour dates through May 7. "Dusty was suited up and ready to go when he tripped on a step while on his way to the stage for the start of Thursday's show," the band's manager Carl Stubner said in a statement. "It was very dark back there and the step - really a half-step - wasn't lit so there's no way he could've seen it.
