For the first time in 47 years, all five Best Actress Oscar nominees hail from Best Picture nominees.
The Best Actress lineup was the top five in the odds: Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez), Mikey Madison (Anora), Demi Moore (The Substance), and Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here). Four of those films were widely predicted to score Best Picture nominations except for I’m Still Here, which was in 13th place in the odds; but in the biggest surprise of the day, the Brazilian feature made the cut on Thursday. The other Best Picture nominees are The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, and Nickel Boys.
The last time the Best Actress and Best Picture lineups aligned was during the 1977-78 season when Diane Keaton (Annie Hall) won Best Actress over Jane Fonda (Julia), Marsha Mason (The Goodbye Girl), and The Turning Point stars Anne Bancroft and Shirley MacLaine.

When the actor known as “Russia’s Timothée Chalamet” attended the Gotham Awards last month, he never expected to come face-to-face with the real Timothée Chalamet. “It was such a crazy thing,” says “Anora” star Mark Eydelshteyn of meeting the Gotham Awards’ Visionary Tribute honoree. “I know many amazing actors, but they’re very far from me. I could feel Tim’s vibe up close. I was so lucky to talk with him, just to see that he’s a real, warm and kind person.”
You can expect more moments like this in the near future. Ever since Italian star Ever since Italian star Sophia Loren became the first actor to win an Oscar for a non-English speaking role in 1961 for “Two Women,” few award seasons have boasted as many top acting contenders from outside the U.S. as this one — which is not to say that it’s been an easy road for them.

Warner Bros. stated on Friday that “The Batman” will have a sequel on October 1, 2027. The highly awaited film directed by Matt Reeves has experienced its second delay. The film was pushed back to 2026 earlier this year after being set to come out in October 2025.
Robert Pattinson will play the superhero again. As Reeves continues to polish the script, the production is expected to start in the third quarter of 2025.
James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, talked to fans on Threads’ social media site about their worries about the long wait. He told us, “Matt is committed to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write.” He also said that once the script is done, pre-production, shooting, and post-production for big movies usually take two years.

Perhaps the Grinch ruined Christmas at Warner Bros., and now the studio is somewhat hellbent on wreaking havoc. Because right after Christmas, WB got busy making release date changes for next year and beyond. Funnily enough, the studio took the most audacious step of shifting Matt Reeves’ highly anticipated The Batman sequel to 2027, while offering Tom Cruise’s unnamed movie a 2026 release date.

Well, we understand that production for The Batman 2 isn’t scheduled to get started until late summer of 2025 and is set to be a VFX-heavy sequel, but despite all odds, a fall 2026 theatrical release seemed perfectly within reach. So why did Warner Bros. shift its release date, and instead offer Tom Cruise and Alejandro González Iñárritu’s untitled movie a 2026 deadline? Riddle me this! What highly-anticipated superhero sequel is getting delayed? If you said Matt Reeves’s The Batman sequel, give yourself a gold star! The Dark Knight’s next theatrical outing is Bat-grappling from October 2, 2026 to October 1, 2027, a full year from its intended release date. Production for The Batman sequel begins in the late summer. If WB kept the film’s original date, the VFX team would have been working night and day to finish the movie on time. The new date gives Reeves and his fellow filmmakers ample time to fine-tune the project for a box office-breaking 2027 release. Plus, who doesn’t love seeing a Batman film in Autumn? Prime time Spooky Season, baby! Let’s go!

Moviegoers will have to wait a little longer to return to Gotham City, as Matt Reeves’ follow-up to “The Batman” has been pushed back until 2027. The superhero sequel was originally supposed to open on October 2, 2026, but will now shift a year and open on October 1, 2027, in Imax, Warner Bros. announced on Friday.
That left an opening for Alejandro G. Iñárritu and Tom Cruise’s upcoming film to hit theaters in 2026, just as the awards season race kicks off. The film, which still lacks a title, will open in Imax on Oct. 2 in the date “The Batman 2” vacated.
Warner Bros. made some additional tweaks to its upcoming release slate, swapping the openings of Bong Joon Ho’s “Mickey 17” and Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners.” Now, “Mickey 17,” which stars Robert Pattinson (who plays the Dark Knight in Reeves’ comic book series), will open on March 7, 2025, while “Sinners,” which re-teams Coogler...

Post Christmas Warner Bros is busy making release date changes for next year before it rings in and beyond. The most prolific move is that Matt Reeves’ The Batman sequel is heading from Oct. 2, 2026 to Oct. 1, 2027. Production isn’t scheduled to get started until late summer and with a VFX heavy sequel such as this one, a fall 2026 theatrical release is within reach. The Reeves’ movie will have Imax screens.
Funny enough, Warner Bros always had the first weekend of October 2027 staked out for a DC title.
Reeves’ The Batman was the first fire-breathing theatrical release for Warner Bros. post Covid after implementing a day-and-date release strategy on Max; the movie making $369.3M domestic, $772M WW. The feature spawned a Max series, The Penguin, the third-most-watched HBO or Max debut season around the world following The House of the Dragon and The Last of Us.

Tom Cruise stars in the latest film from Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu, and filming has quietly got underway. More on the story here.
We’re not surprised if Tom Cruise sometimes looks a little tired in interviews. After now completing filming on Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning and wrapping production on a project which began filming all the way back in 2020, Cruise has reportedly already finished up shooting the first phase of his upcoming collaboration with Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu.
According to World Of Reel, the project is tentatively titled Judy and will see Cruise play ‘the most powerful man in the world, who embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s saviour before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.’
Sounds cheap.
While the events onscreen may be pretty frantic, they’re set to be matched by Cruise’s off-screen calendar for 2025.

The Los Angeles Film Critics Association named Sean Baker’s “Anora” its Best Picture for 2024. The critics group also awarded stars Mikey Madison and Yura Borisov with the Best Leading Performance and Best Supporting Performance, respectively. This year, the Lafca decided to spread the wealth and awarded two performers in each category, which remain gender neutral.

Illustration by Stephanie Lane Gage. While working on this list and thinking about why my favorite posters stand out from the thousands of others made each year, I came up with one simple maxim: a great idea beautifully executed. There are plenty of good movie posters out there that do the job they need to do; they tell you what the movie is and make you want to see it. Does a new blockbuster like Wicked need an especially clever poster? No. It needs to tell you that it is Wicked, that Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are in it, and it needs to look luxe. But the posters that I love best go above and beyond mere glossy functionality. They have a smart concept that is about more than just showing and telling, and they execute it perfectly, down to the placement of every piece of type and every...

A regular on the red carpet this time last year as she participated in the 2023-2024 awards season with Anatomy of a Fall, Justine Triet has been off the circuit since the spring as she writes two new projects.

Director Doug Liman says he’s making Deeper, a ‘scary’ undersea supernatural thriller, with Tom Cruise as its star.
Director Doug Liman and Tom Cruise have long planned to work together again after collaborating on Edge Of Tomorrow and American Made. And according to a new report, that is still set to happen – just not in the guise we expected. When thinking about a Liman/Cruise collaboration at Warner Bros, a sequel to 2014’s Edge Of Tomorrow might spring to mind – but no, it seems like the duo could be cooking up something different.
Showbiz411’s Roger Friedman (via World of Reel) quotes Doug Liman as saying that his next film will be Deeper, starring Tom Cruise. It’s a project that Warner Bros has reportedly been trying to get off the ground for a decade under the stewardship of several different filmmakers.

Tom Cruise’s highest-grossing film happened only because the director was able to convey the emotional core of the film to the actor in 20 minutes. When Joe Kosinski approached Cruise for Top Gun: Maverick, he knew that a sequel wouldn’t be at the top of the mind for the Mission: Impossible actor. However, Kosinski’s pitch impressed Cruise, who immediately greenlit the film.

Top Gun: Maverick, a sequel to the 1986 film Top Gun, was in development hell for years. Cruise dismissed the idea of a sequel in the ’90s itself. Tony Scott, the original director, was attached to the project in 2010, as development began at Paramount Pictures. However, Scott’s death in 2012 put the sequel in uncertainty for a long time before Kosinski took it up in 2017.

The cinematic landscape is not just for the sake of ‘entertainment’ and ‘merriment’ alone, for oftentimes it leaves the audiences with traces of unanswered questions, tickling their brain chemistry in the right way. While in 2023, movies like Barbie posed some very vital yet harsh questions about society and women, movies like Oppenheimer made viewers question the drawbacks of progress in the scientific world and the integrity of human morality.
On the other hand, in the same year, we had a French legal drama directed by Justine Triet which sparked the most curiosity among viewers. Called The Anatomy of a Fall, the film captivated audiences at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, drawing viewers into a complex web of emotional tension, courtroom intrigue, and personal revelations.

It was a time of change in Halberstadt. As the summer of 1990 drew people together, it also thrust them into an uncertain future. The German Democratic Republic was dissolving, its official currency replaced by the West German mark. For many families like Maren, Robert, and their friend Volker, this meant adjusting to new rules almost overnight.
Though changes loomed large, their village stayed as tight-knit as ever. Neighbors still found ways to look out for each other, even amid upheaval. When Volker returned after time away, old bonds proved resilient. Through sweltering days and restless nights, the friends’ curiosity grew about mysterious trucks near their homes. Following a curious trail, they made an unexpected discovery that would give their community one last moment to come together.

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: third time might just be the charm for the proposed merger of Skydance Media and Paramount Global. What does that mean? We’re glad you asked…
Huh? What’s happening? Who’s Edgar Bronfman? Help!
Don’t worry, we’ve gotten ourselves in a right muddle over this Paramount business, too. If you’ve been living under, on or around a rock more than a few feet from the media enterprise’s boardroom, stay tuned for a quick look back at a particularly narratively unsatisfying corporate staring contest. We’ll make it fun, we promise.
If you’re already exceptionally clued-in then here’s the latest: Edgar Bronfman Jr. – the head of an investment group who offered a last-minute bid for the embattled Paramount Global last week – announced on Monday that he was ending his bid for the company.

The cast for Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s next film is taking shape with some of Hollywood’s finest joining Tom Cruise in the cast.
Last we heard about Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s next film was in February when Tom Cruise was attached to star.
Now, Deadline reports that the film’s cast has gotten significantly bigger. Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons and Sophie Wilde are all on board The Revenant director’s new film. Riz Ahmed is also in the final stages of negotiations to join the cast. That’s a lot of star power and it has certainly caught our attention.
Hüller’s career has really taken off since her Oscar nomination for the tremendous Anatomy Of A Fall and it’s great to see a young star such as Wilde in the cast. Wilde was seen in Talk To Me, one of last year’s finest horror films.

Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise is teaming up with acclaimed director Alejandro G. Iñárritu for an untitled drama film. Iñárritu, known for award-winning movies like Birdman and The Revenant, will direct the movie. The film has assembled a talented cast that includes Tom Cruise as well as several Oscar-winning and nominated actors.
Little is known about the film’s plot, but it is described as a “high-stakes drama.” Sources say the storyline follows “the most powerful man in the world” as he desperately tries to prove he can save humanity from a disaster he caused. This premise suggests audiences will see Cruise take on a serious dramatic role outside the action movies he’s known for.
Joining Cruise in the film are actors with proven dramatic abilities like Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons. Rising star Sophie Wilde and Oscar winner Riz Ahmed are also expected to star.
