In this ingenious satirical thriller, humiliated traders meet online to settle their uncertain futures for good
The morose dissatisfaction of Ireland’s newly impoverished Celtic tigers is satirised in this interesting first feature from writer-directors Rachel Moriarty and Peter Murphy. It’s a violent futurist thriller with hints of David Fincher’s Fight Club and Géla Babluani’s cult Russian-roulette nightmare 13 (Tzameti). Killian Scott plays Harry, a young guy who has grown used to the good life in the financial world; being laid off post-slump introduced him to the humiliation of not having much money. But his cringing beta-male friend Vernon (John Bradley) has invented an internet game called Trading; individuals who can’t bear the thought of not being rich must sell everything, put all their money in a bag and challenge other individuals to meet on a patch of wasteground for a bareknuckle fight to the death; the...

If there was one film that made Russian roulette famous, or at least brought it into more mainstream movies it was The Deer Hunter. It’s hard to forget the infamous and excellent scenes with Robert DeNiro and Christopher Walken as they played the deadly game. It’s an adrenaline rush, not only for the people taking part but for the watchers, a one in six chance of death some would say the ultimate risk. This is the bases of what 13 is mixed with quite a surprising cast with playing quite understated characters than we’d expect from them.

Filled with the kind of roulette even Wesley 'always bet on black' Snipes would run from, 13 is set in a world of very high-stakes pistol play. It's straight-to-dvd(-and-Blu-ray), but this punchy trailer looks well worth a look. The movie sees Sam Riley play Vince Ferro, a young man who's out of his depth in a world where large stakes are placed on the outcome of Russian roulette games. Unsurprising, really, considering he's also dealing with Jason Statham's gambler, Ray Winstone's violent lunatic and a Texan cowboy played by Mickey Rourke. That volatile stew of testosterone and bullets is overseen by Géla Babluani, directing a Us remake of his own Euro-thriller 13 Tzameti.13 is out on DVD and Blu-ray on October 8.

When it was announced that Géla Babluani's 13 Tzameti was being remade, my initial reaction was one of contempt. I generally dislike the idea of English language remakes of international films but when, in the same breath, it was noted that Babluani would be stepping behind the camera to direct the remake, I took a step back. Here was an opportunity for a director to retell his story for a different audience, with an amazing cast of talents and a larger budget. It had the trappings of a good thing in the making and with the success of other English language adaptations (Michael Haneke with Funny Games, John Erick Dowdle's Quarantine and Matt Reeves' Let Me In (review)), it looked like the setup would deliver a fantastic thriller. And then the remake disappeared off the face of the earth for what seemed like forever.

All films we've covered on S&A; first 13, a remake of the 2006 French film of the same name - a minimalist, black and white, atmospheric, tense thriller that I enjoyed, the feature film debut for Géla Babluani, the young French filmmaker of the original, who also wrote and directed this remake, which I hear is terrible; at least, so says one of its stars, Mickey Rourke.

It’s always kind of weird when a director decides to remake his or her own movie in another language. If you’ve already tackled the material in your native tongue, why in the world would you want to rework the material for those unfortunate individuals who simply refuse to read subtitles? It boggles the mind. Sadly, Géla Babluani’s “13″ — an adaptation of his critically-acclaimed thriller “13 Tzameti” — loses something in translation, due in part to some unintentionally cheesy melodrama courtesy of veteran actors Jason Statham and Ray Winstone, both of whom look bored out of their skulls. And I honestly can’t blame them. Much to my surprise, “13″ is an exceptional bore, a shadow of the original film on which it’s based. No wonder it sat on the shelf for so long. Sam Riley (“Franklyn”) stars as Vince, a struggling electrician who finds himself in a bit of a financial pickle.

Making a film about the cutthroat world of Russian Roulette is a little like making a gambling thriller about the card game War. In both the gameplay is so brutally simple that strategy and skill don’t play much of a part. Sure, statistical considerations and laws of probability come into play, but it really comes down to blind luck. Despite the complications and problems endemic in translating this blunt instrument of a sport to the big screen, writer-director Géla Babluani nevertheless scored a big international hit and cleaned up at Sundance and the Venice Film Festival with his ...

At long last, this week sees the release of "13," director Géla Babluani's adaptation of his own 2005 French film. The movie follows Vincent "Vince" Ferro (Sam Riley), a young man with a desperate need for cash. His desperation drags him into the underground world of Russian roulette, where he has to participate in several deadly games to earn his paycheck. It's not a pretty living, but someone's gotta do it!
"13" features an incredible cast including "Expendables" alums Jason Statham and Mickey Rourke, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, and "The Departed" badass Ray Winstone. It also has a spot for "True Blood" hunk Alexander Skarsgård, who just so happens to be the star of this exclusive clip from "13." Skarsgård puts his fangs away in favor of some gun-loading lessons for roulette newbie Vince. Check it out in the video below.

Thoughts by Tsr: You know, people, there’s this stigma against direct-to-video movies that I don’t think is entirely fair. There are plenty of perfectly watchable direct-to-video releases and this movie seems right in line with – hmm? What’s that you say? This remake of the French film 13 Tzameti isn’t going direct-to-video? Surely it isn’t getting a theatrical release! It is? Oh dear.
It seems redundant nowadays for a director to remake his own film. That isn’t to say I immediately dislike the practice. I rather like both versions of Michael Haneke’s Funny Games, but that probably speaks more to my love of Haneke as a director than anything else. Now writer/director Géla Babluani is getting into the business of remaking his own films. I...

Contrary to what this new poster for director Géla Babluani’s remake of his own movie, “13″, would seem to indicate, that young kid in the far left corner is actually the star of the movie, and not Jason Statham, Ray Wise, Mickey Rourke, or rapper-turned–actor .50 Cent. Oh sure, the guys have roles in the movie, but the film is all about Sam Riley’s Vinny. Here’s the official synopsis as proof: Vince Ferro is a man in desperate circumstances. While on a quick fix-it job, he steals an envelope containing instructions for a mysterious job that promises a potential fortune. He assumes a false identity and follows the instructions, only to find himself a numbered participant in an underworld Russian roulette competition, where gamblers place bets on who’ll survive when the trigger is pulled. The stakes are high, but the payout is more than he can resist.

The first trailer for 13 has been released online and the thriller based around an underground game of Russian roulette where rich men gamble on the lives of others looks as tense as that sounds. The rules are simple: each player loads the weapon and spins the cylinder, then places the gun against the head of the man next to them in a circle and fires on a signal. 13 is based on the 2005 film 13 Tzameti, with writer and director Géla Babluani once again behind the camera. With two Jason Statham movies opening in the next two months, it looked like the fall was going to be the "season of Statham" until the action thriller Safe moved from October to next March. But taking the place of Safe is director Géla Babluani's 13 to go along with September's Killer Elite.

We've seen a number of foreign directors remaking their own films for North American audiences in recent years, from Takashi Shimizu (The Grudge) to Michael Haneke (Funny Games). While it can often be an exercise in redundancy, it's difficult to complain that they strayed too far from the original. Now Georgian filmmaker Géla Babluani is getting into the act with a remake of his 2005 cult hit 13 Tzameti, about a dangerous underground game of Russian roulette. The cast he has assembled for the U.S. remake (titled simply 13) includes Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, Alexander Skarsgård, Michael Shannon, Ray Winstone, Sam Riley Emmanuelle Chriqui and 50 Cent. While there are some talented people in there, the names do lean a little too heavily toward direct-to-dvd fare... and that's certainly what this trailer feels like. I heard good things about the original and I am intrigued by the premise, but something is telling me...

You've heard of reboots and remakes. But how often have you heard of a guy remaking his own movie?
Well, that's just what director Géla Babluani has done -- and the new trailer for "13" shows that remaking your own movies is a bit like Russian roulette. Even if you win, you probably crapped yourself.

Sometimes things just don't go according to plan. Director Géla Babluani seemed to be on the cuSp of great things after his “13 Tzameti” won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize in 2006. Not bad for a movie that was pretty overrated and kind of ridiculous to begin with. As these things tend to go, Hollywood came calling and a remake with a first-rate cast was promptly ordered up with Babluani at the helm. And then things went disastrously wrong. It was yanked from the 2010 SXSW festival before its U.S. premiere (rumored to be because of in-fighting on the final…...

Did someone forget to butter Mickey Rourke's popcorn at the "Scream 4" premiere last night? Or was he as disappointed as we were in the lacklustre horror sequel? Who knows, but when chatting with Vulture at the after-party, the actor decided to dispense with Hollywood courtesies and drop some truth bombs all over the place. Charlie Sheen, eat your heart out. When asked about "13," the English-language remake of Géla Babluani's own 2005 film with a host of actors including Sam Riley, Jason Statham, Ray Winstone, Michael Shannon and 50 Cent (who was hosting the after-party, which opens up a…...

So… Vulture ran into Mickey Rourke at a party being hosted by 50 Cent last night, here in NYC, after a preview screening of Scream 4, and had the following brief conversation with the man of few words…
Q: What about 50 Cent? He’s hosting. Reply: I haven’t seen him.
Q: You guys are in a movie together, right? Reply: A really bad movie, yeah.
Q: What?! Is it out? Reply: No, it’s so bad it can’t get out.
Q: Tell me why you made it. Reply: For the money.
Q: But you think the movie’s bad. Reply: Terrible.
Q: Why? Reply: You have to watch it.
Hah! Not sure if that after several shots of whatever he was having, with a smile on his face, or just the truth ruth… at least as he sees it.

New to trailers this week is 13, Géla Babluani‘s English remake of his very own cult hit 13 Tzameti. 13 stars an elaborate cast including Mickey Rourke, Sam Riley, Jason Statham, Ray Winstone , Michael Shannon and yes even Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson. the story follows Jack (Alexander Skarsgård) as he gets caught up in a gang out to make money through games of Russian roulette. The synopsis includes:
” A naive young man assumes a dead man’s identity and finds himself embroiled in an underground world of power, violence, and chance where men gamble behind closed doors on the lives of other men.”
Is this the most original movie out there? No. Does it look like these actors are giving it their all? Not really. Does it scream Oscar buzz for Fiddy? Absolutely not! But the last ten seconds of the trailer says it all. Give me a room full of guys ready...

Before they got together for The Expendables, Jason Statham and Mickey Rourke filmed a remake of the low-budget French thriller 13 Tzameti. And now some time after Sly's gun bunch shot up the screen, 13 seems to be finally getting a release. The movie, re-directed by the original's Géla Babluani, stars Sam Riley (Control) as a guy who "assumes a dead man’s identity and finds himself embroiled in an underground world of power, violence, and chance where men gamble...

If there's one thing that Jason Statham movies are normally good for -- the final product, be damned -- are damn fine trailers. They're normally 2 and a half minutes of shirtless Statham driving cars, shooting people, kicking ass, and taking off his shirt.
The trailer for 13, however, is decidedly slow -- reminds me a little too much of the Statham/Guy Ritchie Kaballah film I'm trying to scrub from my memory. The movie, a remake of the French film, 13 Tzameti, stars Statham, Mickey Rourke, 50 Cent, and Ray Winstone. It's also directed by Géla Babluani, who directed the original French film. But the trailer doesn't hold a lot of appeal, but then again, the trailer for The Bank Job wasn't so great, either, and that's my favorite Statham film. So, who knows? The idea of mass Russian roulette does sound intriguing.

Jason Statham's got his paws all up in the trailer world this week. Yesterday we saw the Stath in the remake of The Mechanic and today we get a taste of him in 13, Georgian-French filmmaker Géla Babluani's remake of his 2006 neo-noir 13 Tzameti. It revolves around the most badass game outside of Michael Vick's basement you can possibly gamble on: Russian Roulette! Judging by this gloomy trailer, in fact, the movie hemorrhages badass and maintains the noir aesthetics of the original. I could watch Jason Statham (in a Popeye Doyle-ish pork pie hat), Ray Winstone, and Mickey Rourke all muttering at each other forever - not to mention Michael Shannon yelling a whole bunch. 50 Cent also stars, and even though he's not a great actor, he's been shot nine times. So that's badass.

Here’s the brand new poster and trailer for 13, the American remake of French movie, 13 Tzameti. It has a rather cool cast which includes Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, 50 Cent, Ray Winstone and is directed by Géla Babluani.
Shadow Act who originally posted the trailer (with a nod to The Playlist for the heads up) also give us the synopsis:
Synopsis: A naive young man assumes a dead man’s identity and finds himself embroiled in an underground world of power, violence, and chance where men gamble behind closed doors on the lives of other men.
As far as I can tell, there is no release date for 13 (Thirteen) as yet but we’ll keep you posted. Watch the trailer below or scroll down to view the full poster which you can click to enlarge.

Because nothing says “good morning” quite like a watching Mickey Rourke play a game of mass Russian roulette, here’s the trailer for 13 (embedded below), the upcoming thriller with Rourke, 50 Cent, Jason Statham, Ray Winstone, and Sam Riley (Control). It’s actually a remake of the 2005 French-language film 13 Tzameti, about a young criminal who gets tangled up in a sick and twisted gambling ring (hence the Russian roulette). And in an un-Hollywood-like twist, the movie is being directed by Géla Babluani, the same guy who made the first one. Bonus: This time, he got to shoot it in color. Take...

Géla Babluani’s “13″ has been around for a while as far as I can tell, but thanks to the poster marquee power of Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, and 50 Cent — okay, not so much Rourke and 50 Cent — the film is now surfacing over in the States. Look for it on DVD soon. Here’s an interesting tidbit: the film is actually a remake of “13 Tzameti” from 2005, which also happens to be directed by … Géla Babluani. A naive young man assumes a dead man’s identity and finds himself embroiled in an underground world of power, violence, and chance where men gamble behind closed doors on the lives of other men. Starring Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, Alexander Skarsgård, Emmanuelle Chriqui, David Zayas, Michael Shannon, Ray Winstone, 50 Cent, Natasha Lyonne, Sam Riley and directed by Géla Babluani. function getVideo() { var so = new SWFObject("http://cdn.springboard.gorillanation.com/storage/xplayer/yo033.swf", "mplayer", "590", "375", "8", "#000000"); so.

Watching the trailer for this American remake of the nifty minimalist French thriller 13 Tzameti is a bit frustrating. It looks remarkably similar to the original film, and the fact that Géla Babluani directed both versions only adds to my suspicion that this remake is unnecessary and probably kind of dull. But then there's the cast. And the fact that watching Mickey Rourke, 50 Cent, Sam Riley and Jason Statham play Russian Roulette under Michael Shannon's supervision may actually be enough to get me to watch the same movie again.

13 is the debut film from French filmmaker Géla Babluani, starring Sam Riley, 50 Cent, Mickey Rourke, Jason Statham and Ray Winstone. Both a psychological thriller and gritty tale of the underworld, this movie looks intense and incredibly awesome. 13, which premiered in the United States on March 13th, 2010 at the SXSW Film Festival, is a remake of the 2006 French film, a tensely constructed story shot in black and white.

You've got to watch this trailer for a new film called 13 directed by French filmmaker Géla Babluani. This is a remake of the filmmakers original movie, 13 Tzameti. Babluani went out and got himself one hell of a cast to star in the film! The cast includes Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, Alexander Skarsgård, Michael Shannon, Ray Winstone, Sam Riley, 50 Cent, David Zayas and Emmanuelle Chriqui.
This is a very compelling trailer and the movie looks like it will be great. I haven't seen the original film, but I think I'm going to have to check it out now.

Just last night I found myself wondering what had happened to the Géla Babluani directed remake of his own 2005 French thriller 13 Tzameti, starring Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke and 50 Cent. I first heard about it in late 2008, which led to me seeing the original in early 2009, and it then seemed to disappear. Despite an image or two popping up online, it was almost like it was never made. Now, thanks to Shadow&Act (via ThePlaylist) we have a poster, but more importantly, a real trailer to take a look at. You can see both below.
What’s interesting, to me, is that this looks to be more plot-driven than the original. The French film only had around 30 minutes (about a third of the run time) devoted to any real story, with the rest relying more on mood and imagery. Sam Riley, the lead this time around, seems like the natural American...

Lock and load! After making his feature debut with 13 Tzameti, French filmmaker Géla Babluani decided to direct the glitzy Hollywood remake of his own film himself now 10 years later. This time it's called just 13 and Shadow And Act (via The Playlist) has the first trailer. Babluani rounded up an impressive cast: Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, Alexander Skarsgård, Michael Shannon, Ray Winstone, Sam Riley, 50 Cent, David Zayas and Emmanuelle Chriqui. It's a fairly slow paced introductory trailer, but it still looks good, and feels a lot more British than French or anything. But wait it's all a big game? Watch below! Géla Babluani's English language remake of his own wildly overrated, but cult adored "13 Tzameti" has already begun opening overseas but is still without a release date on this side of the ocean and there is probably a good reason. It looks terrible. While some Russian dubbed clips hit earlier this year, a new trailer has arrived giving us our first proper look at the film and more importantly, allows us to hear the likes of 50 Cent and Mickey Rourke mumble their dialogue in an attempt to speak English. The plot of the film revolves around a young man…...

I thought we’d profiled this flick previously, but I didn’t immediately find any posts about it here, so this might be the first.
In short, it’s called 13, a remake of the 2006 French film of the same name, which I saw and liked! An minimalist, black and white, atmospheric, tense thriller that maybe owes more to its execution than its story; though a pretty good debut for Géla Babluani, the young French filmmaker of the original, who also wrote and directed this remake.
The film stars Sam Riley, 50 Cent, Mickey Rourke, Jason Statham and Ray Winstone. It was actually shot over a year ago, but, for reasons unknown to me at the moment, it’s been sitting around for some time. Maybe it sucks??
Babluani said in a past interview that he changed quite a bit of the story for the remake, because he didn’t want to...

Even though Géla Babluani is remaking his own film, I have to say this looks like garbage compared to the quiescent B&W original. I don't know if they've modified the script but they've put a lot of big names in there like Jason Statham, Alexander Skarsgård, and Mickey Rourke. If you haven't seen the original, it reolves around 13 people who play russian roulette while people watch and bet.

Currently promoting Centurion, which receives it theatrical release in the U.S today, Neil Marshall isn't wasting much time "cooking" up his next project. Titled Underground, no this is not a remake of Emir Kusturica's 1995 film, this is based on a David Cohen script that would probably make chef Anthony Bourdain feel queasy. To be produced by Ozla Pictures' Taka Ichise and Erin Eggers (Shutter), along with Cohen and Jeremy Platt, set in the world of gourmet underground supper clubs, this sees an ambitious young chef who ventures into the terrifying underbelly of extreme cuisine. Don't know about you guys, but I'm sensing a little of Géla Babluani's 13 Tzameti mixed in with Jeunet's Delicatessen.
