December is finally here and with it comes a bunch of new movies and shows to Netflix. This week brings a ton of new additions, including a Christmas special from a famous pop star, a new drama series, and the start of the final season of a popular anime show.

First up is A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter! The Xmas special hits Netflix on Friday, Dec. 6, 2024. In the musical special, Carpenter will sing, welcome guests, and be her overall delightful self. Phars Film (Phf) has locked down the overseas theatrical distribution rights for “Singham Again,” the upcoming tentpole from Jio Studios, the content arm of billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Limited. The action thriller, helmed by hitmaker Rohit Shetty, is poised to be one of Bollywood’s marquee releases for 2024.

The pic marks the fifth entry in Shetty’s popular cop universe. The franchise – initially based on Hari’s 2010 Tamil-language “Singam,” starring Suriya – kicked off with “Singham” (2011) and “Singham Returns” (2014), both centering on Bajirao Singham (Ajay Devgn), a straight-arrow Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dcp) from the Goa-Maharashtra border town of Shivgarh. “Simmba” (2018) shifted focus to Sangram “Simmba” Bhalerao (Ranveer Singh), a corrupt inspector from Singham’s hometown. The series expanded further with “Sooryavanshi” (2021), introducing Akshay Kumar as Dcp Veer Sooryavanshi.

Paris-based IP firm Hari has put Baby Lemmings, a “gentle slapstick” CGI-animated series running to 78 seven-minute episodes, into production after boarding Wbd and France Télévisions. The series delivers through 2025 and 2026.

France Télévisions is the commissioner and will play the show on its kids streaming app Okoo and France 4, while Warner Bros. Discovery secured the rights for Cartoonito and Max in Emea. Cartoonito has them in Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan, as does Cartoon Network in South Asia. Super Rtl licensed the rights in Germany for Toggo.

The Zee5 Global Telugu language show Paruvu is one of those serious dramas about men and women marrying outside of their caste and being ostracized for it. Aay, directed by Anji K. Maniputhra, takes a lighthearted to almost satirical take on inter-caste marriages.

Aay began with Hari and Subbu finding an unconscious Karthik. They presumed he poisoned himself and shifted him to the nearby hospital. As they await the results, the movie goes to a flashback and reveals how Karthik got into this situation. Karthik was a software engineer based in Hyderabad who was back in his hometown during the Covid lockdown. He was not a fan of living in his hometown, but the work from home option forced him to move back with his parents.

HBO's Industry has returned with its third season, which is seeing impressively positive reviews and ratings just two episodes in. The British drama is growing in audience and I'm certain this season is going to be the biggest one yet. Following an investment bank called Pierpoint & Co, Industry shows us the good, the bad, and the straight-up evil side of corporate life, and how far people are willing to go to succeed. The first season follows recent graduates fighting for permanent spots at the bank, while seasons 2 and 3 show us what's next for those who stay.

We also get to catch up with those who leave Pierpoint, including the character Gus Sackey, played by David Jonsson. Gus struggles with his place at the bank in season 1 after his teammate Hari dies in the office. Ultimately, he decides it's too unethical of a place for him, understandably, and the second season...

HBO and BBC’s joint drama series, Industry, has been quite a popular watch since its premiere in 2020, shocking and enthralling viewers with its plot filled with betrayals and spectacles, both steamy and intellectual. The series follows professional affairs at the London office of a reputed investment bank, Pierpoint & Co., where five young graduates join with entry-level jobs, with the pressure of having to secure their position in the firm within the next six months. Although the show can sometimes come off as heightened melodrama wrapped inside layers of finance jargon, the developments and plot twists that take place over its two seasons are quite entertaining, to say the least. How the characters act each time that they have to confront challenges or how they solve their quandaries are not the narrative necessities that the film is interested in dealing with. Exclusive Updated: Re-start of production has been postponed on season 3 of Foundation, the Apple TV+ saga that’s based on Isaac Asimov’s trilogy.

Issues with budgeting and physical production/ prompted the delay of filming in Prague and Poland, which had been scheduled to begin this month, sources tell Deadline. Cast and crew who had already convened for the shoot were told to return home while production issues are sorted out, with the budget brought down. No new start date has been set.

This is the second time Season 3 production has been paused on the series that stars Jared Harris and Lee Pace and chronicles the saga of The Foundation, a band of exiles who discover that the only way to save the Galactic Empire from destruction is to defy it. According to sources, the sci-fi drama filmed for several weeks in spring 2023 before shutting down due to the strike.

The Inevitable Foundation has revealed the winners of its Starz #TakeTheLead Elevate Collective Grants and the Winter 2024 Elevate Cohort, both of which support disabled TV writers to level up their careers.

Apple TV+ confirmed the critically acclaimed sci-fi drama starring Lee Pace and Jared Harris has been renewed for season three. However, the announcement didn’t hint at when the third season might arrive on the streaming service.

Manhwa, the general Korean term for comics, has existed since the 1970s. During the 1990s, when the ban on Japanese media was lifted, Korean comics became influenced by Japanese art style and storytelling to reach their current iteration. Undeniably, Japanese manga and Korean manhwa have a lot in common stylistically and narratively, and each has its rabid fanbase. The popularity of manhwa has been on a steady incline, mainly due to WebToon, a company started in 2004 by Naver Corporation that hosts a vast majority of the popular titles.

As a manga diehard, I was initially hesitant to approach manhwa, particularly with a preference for physical media. But with publishers' efforts to bring titles to print, I found myself attracted to the format both on and off the page. Still, it can be somewhat intimidating to approach, given the abundant amount of content out there.

All At Sea Together

The inaugural edition of the Cinema at Sea – Okinawa Pan-Pacific International Film Festival will be held next month (Nov. 23-29) on the Japanese island of Okinawa. With a 40-title lineup, a competition and a robust international selection, the festival says its mission is to explore the ocean and Pacific regions [with] film acting as a global lens [that] allows us to bridge the gap between different islands, fostering an inclusive atmosphere in Okinawa, where diverse cultures and nationalities converge.”
