The Old Guard 2 is set for yet more reshoots, nearly three years after the film was originally shot. More here.
RememberThe Old Guard? It came out back in 2020 during those pandemic days when most of us found ourselves watching more movies at home. Perhaps partly due to that unique sitation (or parhaps not), the Charlize Theron-starring actioner amassed over 70 million views in its first month of release and given that the film was clearly intended as a franchise starter, a follow-up was duly commissioned and shot back in mid-2022.
Uma Thurman and Henry Golding join Theron and Kiki Layne for the sequel.
Since then, however, things have continued to be pretty turbulent, not least for Netflix’s film division, which has undergone a major shake-up. Scott Stuber, an executive who was known for throwing cash at expensive projects – such as Zack Snyder’s brace of Rebel Moon films – has since left.

The upcoming TV series It: Welcome to Derry, which will serve as a prequel to Warner Bros’ two-part adaptation of the classic Stephen King novel It (pick up a copy Here), was originally meant to be for the Max streaming service, but we recently learned that it will be airing on HBO as well. The show went into production in Port Hope, Ontario at the end of last year, aiming for a 2025 premiere, and wrapped in August after 237 shooting days. We’re still waiting to hear exactly when the nine episode first season is going to start airing – but yesterday, we learned that the plan is for the show to run for three seasons, with the story going further into the past each season. That information came from executive producer Andy Muschietti, who directed the two It feature films, and he has also revealed just how involved Stephen King is with this show.

“Carry-On” has entered Netflix’s most popular English-language films list.
The action thriller reached the fifth spot Tuesday with 149.5 million views since its release a month ago, according to the streamer. “Red Notice” is currently No. 1 on the list, followed by “Don’t Look Up,” “The Adam Project,” “Bird Box” and “Carry-On.”
“More than the numbers, it’s seeing people’s reactions to the movie,” director Jaume Collet-Serra told me Tuesday morning. “I started getting a lot of calls and texts from friends and people who didn’t know I directed it. They didn’t know until they saw the credits and they were sending me texts that they loved it. I think at that moment I knew the movie was finding an audience and connecting to it.”

2025 is finally here and so is a fun new poster for Lilo & Stitch (via Toonado.com). Disney has been having a blast promoting this live-action take on Experiment 626 and, after recently paying homage to the studio's other recent releases, it's time for the loveable alien to take centre stage and celebrate the New Year.
Of course, he does so by taking a bite out of what appears to be New York's iconic Times Square Ball.
We're still waiting on a full trailer for Lilo & Stitch which offers a better idea of what to expect from the movie itself. There have been some fun teasers showcasing what looks to be a pitch-perfect take on the title character but seeing the rest of the cast - and whether this story differs from the cartoon or is another shot-for-shot remake - will be welcomed by fans.

Disney seems to be having a lot of fun marketing next year's live-action Lilo & Stitch movie; after Experiment 626 previously laid waste to the Disney (sand)castle, a new teaser parodies The Lion King ahead of Mufasa's release in theaters this weekend.
The latest shows Rafiki holding Stitch to the sky, Simba-style and boasts a fun new tagline: "Destined For Destruction." Needless to say, we wouldn't expect the shaman of the Pride Lands to show up in Hawaii!
These latest sneak peeks come after a poster tipped its hat to Moana 2. Snow White is surely up next seeing as that releases in theaters next year, though we are eager for a proper trailer showing what's to come in Lilo & Stitch.
We recently spoke to Stitch's creator and voice actor Chris Sanders about The Wild Robot and asked for his thoughts on Stitch's continued increase in popularity.

Dan Lin has been heading Netflix’s film division since April, stepping into a tough spot after Scott Stuber’s departure. Stuber had earned a reputation for being very talent-friendly, investing heavily in projects and attracting big names. Lin, on the other hand, has a different approach. His goal is clear: cut costs. This has already led to several conflicts with Hollywood’s top talent.
Lin’s blunt and low-key style hasn’t won him many fans, of course. As Puck reports, Lin caused controversy recently for using an AI-generated voice by Christopher Nolan, who’s known for refusing to work with Netflix, to narrate a video celebrating the division’s achievements.
This choice seems ironic, considering Nolan’s long-standing opposition to the streaming giant. Netflix confirmed the use of A.I. Nolan but declined to comment on the matter.
Since taking over, Lin has greenlit roughly 25 films, including some high-profile projects.

With Netflix’s cinema release deal with IMAX reportedly dead, director Greta Gerwig could be about to depart the streaming firm’s upcoming Narnia movies.
In October, director Greta Gerwig was reportedly using her post-Barbie clout to try to persuade Netflix to give her planned Narnia films a cinema release. Gerwig wouldn’t be the first filmmaker to try and fail in this endeavour, and plenty of filmmakers have expressed frustration in the past about the company’s refusal to make a run in cinemas as part of its distribution model.
Perhaps because of the incredible success of Barbie, or whether the company’s new Head of Film, Dan Lin, is more receptive, or simply because it’s a good idea, speculation was rife that Netflix was prepared to do a deal with IMAX and put the film into cinemas on its large screen format.

Disney’s Lilo & Stitch live-action teaser trailer shows Stitch stomping his way through a sandcastle town. The 30-second teaser provides our first real look at how the cute (but weird) little creature will be brought to life in the 2025 theatrical release.
The family-friendly live-action adaptation stars Maia Kealoha as Lilo. Sydney Elizebeth Agudong, Billy Magnussen, Tia Carrere, Hannah Waddingham, Courtney B. Vance, and Zach Galifianakis also star. The original film’s director Chris Sanders returns to voice Stitch.
“A live-action reimagining of Disney’s 2002 animated classic, Lilo & Stitch is the wildly funny and touching story of a lonely Hawaiian girl and the fugitive alien who helps to mend her broken family,” reads Disney’s synopsis. Oscar nominee Dean Fleischer Camp (Marcel the Shell with Shoes On) directs and Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich serve as producers. Executive producers include Tom Pietzman and Ryan Halprin.

Director Dean Fleischer Camp’s new version of the 2002 animated feature is set to hit theaters May 23, 2025. The leads include Maia Kealoha as Lilo, Sydney Elizebeth Agudong as Nani and Kaipot Dudoit as David Kawena. Rounding out the cast are Zach Galifianakis, Billy Magnussen, Courtney B. Vance and Hannah Waddingham, while original voice stars Chris Sanders, Tia Carrere, Amy Hill and Jason Scott Lee will return.

Stitch is back, causing chaos in the Disney universe, and this time, it’s all live-action
Disney has shared a new teaser for the live-action adaptation of Lilo & Stitch, and the little blue alien is back causing destruction.
In the 30-second preview, viewers are green with a shot of a Disney-like sand castle with the backdrop of a beautiful blue ocean. However, the beautiful shot is destroyed when Stitch comes stomping and smashing the castle away.
Newcomer Maia Kealoha plays Lilo in the live-action version of the Hawaii-set 2002 animated pic. The new take was originally developed for Disney+ before shifting to a theatrical release. The cast also includes Zach Galifianakis, Billy Magnussen, Sydney Agudong, Kaipo Dudoit, Tia Carrere, Courtney B. Vance, Amy Hill, Jason Scott Lee, and Hannah Waddingham.

Disney's track record with live-action adaptations has been spotty at best. Some have exceeded expectations, while others have either disappointed fans or completely missed the point of what the original animated movies set out to do.
In the case of Lilo & Stitch, everything we've seen from the movie so far has been exactly what fans of Experiment 626 were hoping for. Now, a 30-second teaser trailer - for what was once a Disney+ exclusive - has been released which and the adorable Stitch unleashes chaos on a beach in Hawaii.
This sneak peek will almost certainly play in theaters before Moana 2 this weekend, and a full-length trailer may drop in time for Mufasa: The Lion King. Bizarrely, Disney still hasn't released the Snow White trailer despite the fact it leaked in HD quality over the weekend (it hasn't even been taken down as we write this).

A new generation of kids is about to learn what “Ohana” means.
On Monday, Disney released a teaser for its live action remake of “Lilo & Stitch,” its 2002 animated film. The short trailer features Stitch, the mischievous blue koala-like alien, stomping a sandcastle version of the Disney castle to smithereens before destroying a whole sandcastle city while laughing his head off.
“Lilo & Stitch” opens in theaters Memorial Day 2025. It will be Disney’s remake with the shortest gap between live action and animated versions until “Moana” is released. It tells the story of an orphaned, lonely Hawaiian girl, Lilo (Maia Kealoha), who befriends Experiment 626, a genetically engineered alien meant for destruction who crash-lands. She names him “Stitch,” and they protect each other from forces that want to break up their family, which also includes Lilo’s older sister Nani (Sydney Agudong), who is just a teenager herself and under...

Disney has dropped teaser trailer for the upcoming “Lilo and Stitch” film. The film is set to release Memorial Day weekend next year.
Many were worried about how Stitch would translate into a live-action film, but he looks good. I’m more concerned about Jumba and Pleakley or how Stitch fits in with the live-action actors. We haven’t seen too much of that yet.

Following the launch of Disney+, it soon became the norm for movies to premiere on the service (particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic).
Made specifically for streaming, these titles ranged from original stories (which have sadly taken a backseat since given what a tough sell those are in theaters) to remakes of Disney Animation classics like Lady and the Tramp, Pinocchio, and Peter Pan & Wendy.
Following Bob Iger's return as Disney CEO, the studio has shifted away from making movies for streaming to increase theatrical profits. It makes sense because spending close to $100 million (if not more) on a movie in the hope of boosting Disney+'s subscriber count doesn't ultimately produce the same financial reward as a successful theatrical run.
That's why Lilo & Stitch has shifted from being a streaming exclusive to a big screen release heading our way next summer. Today, the first poster for the remake has been released (via Toonado.

Updated November 13, 2:59 p.m., with exclusive details: Netflix VP Film Niija Kuykendall is the latest executive out at the streamer amid staff trimming heading into the holidays.
We hear that Kuykendall will depart after a transition period through the end of the year. No next destination was disclosed.
Sources tell us the departure comes amidst the continued realignment of Netflix’s ‘pod’ system of executive oversight since Dan Lin took over the streamer’s top film post from Scott Stuber earlier this year — a system that has executives responsible for oversight of particular genres.
With Netflix for nearly three years, Kuykendall has had oversight of faith-based, YA and holiday films. Amidst her departure, YA will move over the comedies and rom-coms pod led by Jason Young, who we’ve learned exclusively has been promoted to VP Film. She joined in October 2021 as VP of film, where she oversaw a new department focusing on mid-sized holiday, faith-based and young adult movies. Netflix didn’t give a reason for her departure but confirmed she’ll be exiting the company at the end of the year.
“Niija’s creative relationships with established and upcoming filmmakers, like Tyler Perry, Denzel and Malcolm Washington, and David Yates, have had a great impact on our film slate,” Netflix’s film VP Doug Belgrad said in a statement. “I want to thank her for her many contributions, including films such as ‘The Piano Lesson,’ ‘The Deliverance,’ ‘The Six Triple Eight,’ ‘Pain Hustlers’ and ‘Mea Culpa.’”

When Disney+ launched, it quickly became the norm for movies to premiere on the service. Made specifically for streaming, these titles ranged from original tales to remakes of Disney Animation classics like Lady and the Tramp and Pinocchio.
However, since Bob Iger's return as Disney CEO, the studio has shifted away from making movies for streaming in an effort to increase profits.
It adds up because spending close to $100 million (if not more) on a movie in the hope of boosting Disney+'s subscriber count doesn't ultimately produce the same financial reward as a successful theatrical run. That's why Lilo & Stitch has shifted from being a streaming exclusive to a big screen release heading our way on May 23, 2025.

It turns out money can’t buy everything.
Take the case of the red-hot “Wuthering Heights” package. The Emerald Fennell-directed film, which will star Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, sparked a bidding war, with Netflix’s $150 million offer dwarfing Warner Bros.’ $80 million bid. For the past decade, agents have advised their clients to take the loot. But in a sign of the turning tide, the “Wuthering Heights” filmmakers, led by producer Robbie, opted for Warners film chiefs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy’s pitch for a wide theatrical release and a full marketing campaign.
One top agent says Netflix was “shocked” by the outcome “because obviously they had outbid [every other studio] for so long,” and had been used to winning these contests. Even more surprising: Netflix may not have even finished the heat in second. Amazon is believed to have done so, having promised Fennell a major theatrical push. (Netflix and Amazon declined comment.

Netflix doesn't do theatrical releases. It's an established fact and a policy that the studio continues to adhere to — even though it's creating tension once again, this time with its upcoming "Chronicles of Narnia" reboot. The studio announced that they had obtained the iconic C.S. Lewis IP back in 2018 and five years later casually confirmed that Gerwig was on board to helm at least two of its upcoming Narnia movies.
The project is set to be massive, with recent reports estimating that the budget will pass the $200 million mark. With a top director and plenty of cash behind the effort, Netflix is clearly giving its "Chronicles of Narnia" adaptation plenty of oomph. But as of this writing, it still won't be going near a movie theater.

Jimmy O. Yang doesn’t code for Erlich Bachman no more.
On Tuesday, Hulu released the trailer for “Interior Chinatown,” its wild action-comedy series based on Charles Yu’s book of the same name. Yang, who plays a mild-mannered waiter, is about to get way in over his head.
But first, he exists in total mundanity.
“In Chinatown, nothing ever changes,” Willis Wu (Yang) says to open the trailer. “Nothing exciting ever happens to me or you or anyone we know.”
“I feel like I’m a background character in someone else’s story,” Wu continues.
Well, he’s definitely — and precisely — right about that last part.
“Interior Chinatown” follows Wu, a background character stuck in a police procedural called “Black & White.” This may sound weird, but the show has a definite “Wreck-It Ralph” vibe.

Jimmy O. Yang is stepping out of the background and into the action in “Interior Chinatown.”

At least once a year, if not once a quarter, Netflix is asked why it doesn’t invest more in theatrical and put more movies in theaters. Every time their answer is the same, though this time Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos gave his response a new spin.
Sarandos on Thursday’s Q3 earnings call said each of the streamer’s top 10 movies have over 100 million views (actually more than 136 million according to Netflix’s numbers) and are “among the most watched films in the world,” theatrical or not. But a massive audience isn’t all Netflix gives them.

Netflix expects its programming slate to return to close to normalcy in 2025, after saying its 2024 slate was “patchier than normal” due to the Hollywood strikes.
Speaking on Netflix’s third-quarter earnings call, co-ceo Ted Sarandos said some of its popular shows including Cobra Kai and Emily in Paris as well as newer shows such as Perfect Couple and Nobody Wants This were initially scheduled to air “much earlier in the year” but were delayed due to impacts from the strike.
“The first half of this year, our lineup was much lumpier than we liked and that was primarily because of the work stoppage,” Sarandos said. “It did hit [the U.S., Canada and Australia] the hardest, but there were some effects of that felt in production around the world.”
The company is now moving closer to a “more normalized output schedule,” with television series more on track than film, Sarandos said, but neither area is yet fully recovered.

The Mouse House's latest live-action remake is set to arrive on May 23, 2025, pitting it against Paramount’s Mission: Impossible 8. In addition, Freaky Friday sequel Freakier Friday will bow on August 8, 2025.
The original animated Lilo and Stitch focused on a young Hawaiian girl named Lilo Pelekai who forms a bond with a blue alien called Experiment 626, who was engineered to be a force of destruction. It wasn't considered one of the Mouse House's bigger hits from a box office standpoint, but it remains a very popular entry in Disney's library, having spawned three direct-to-video sequels and a 2003 TV series.
An early synopsis reads: "Lilo and Stitch tells the story of the bond formed between a...

Disney has just given firm dates to its Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan sequel Freakier Friday and the live-action take of its animated classic Lilo & Stitch for next summer. Lilo & Stitch will open on May 23, 2025, while Freakier Friday is going August 8, 2025.
Lilo & Stich moves onto the Memorial Day weekend where it joins Paramount’s next installment of Christopher McQuarrie’s Mission: Impossible with Tom Cruise. Surely, both can share the wealth, with M:i geared toward male adults and the Disney pic toward families.
Newcomer Maia Kealoha plays Lilo in the live-action version of the Hawaii-set 2002 animated pic; the new take was originally developed for Disney+ before shifting to a theatrical release. The cast also includes Zach Galifianakis and Billy Magnussen. Dean Fleischer Camp (Marcel the Shell with Shoes On) directs the film, which follows the relationship between a lonely girl named Lilo and Stitch, an alien engineered...

Exclusive: Netflix’s PR operation underwent layoffs Thursday. About 10 people were impacted across series and film publicity, sources said. The cuts are believed to be part of a reorganization under Natalie Bjelajac who was named VP Of Domestic Publicity in July.
Among those affected by today’s layoffs was Director of Publicity Jason Clark who had been at Netflix for over seven years. He shared the news on Instagram.
“Getting laid off sucks, which has impacted many of my Netflix friends today and over the past months for many,” he wrote.
The layoffs were being implemented while Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria was making news at the Bloomberg Screentime event earlier Thursday morning, announcing several series pickups and renewals.
In April, Netflix laid off 15 people in its film department as part of reorganization after Dan Lin took over for Scott Stuber.

Happy Gilmore 2 – starring Adam Sandler – is going at some speed, with the movie set to land in spring of 2025. More here.
In a different story today, we took a brief look at the sizeable production length of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, a project which shot for nine months following decades of struggle on del Toro’s part to get the film made.
At the other end of the spectrum then is Happy Gilmore 2, that has whizzed through all stages of production and is now rapidly heading towards a spring 2025 release.
Adam Sandler will return to the role of Happy Gilmore, a failed hockey player who finds himself becoming an unlikely hero at a new sport: golf. The film was one of a string of 90s hits for Sandler as he established himself as a bankable comedy star. The film grossed $41m from a $12m budget and went...

Greta Gerwig was beaming Wednesday night as she was honored as this year’s Pioneer Of The Year, and in the process also helped raised $1.4 million for the Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation at a sold-out dinner that packed the Beverly Hilton Hotel International Ballroom.
Gerwig seemed a bit overwhelmed by all the attention from the crowd and this organization dedicated to helping those in need from the motion picture distribution and exhibition community. And certainly for people involved in bringing movies to the masses, they were thrilled to stand up for Gerwig, who has been a major force at the boxoffice. Presenters, Co-Chairs and CEOs Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group Pamela Abdy and Michael DeLuca noted in their remarks that Gerwig had made more money at the boxoffice than any female filmmaker in history, including $80 million for Ladybird, $230 million for LIttle Women, and $1.4 billion for Barbie, the latter...

A few months ago, we learned that the Netflix streaming service had gotten a new film chief in Dan Lin – and one of the first projects Lin greenlit at the streamer is an adaptation of author Ruth Ware’s bestselling 2016 thriller novel The Woman in Cabin 10, which has Keira Knightley attached to star in it as the titular woman. Now a dozen actors have been cast in the film alongside Knightley, and Deadline has their names: Guy Pearce (Memento), Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso), David Ajala (Star Trek: Discovery), Gitte Witt (The Sleepwalker), Art Malik (True Lies), Daniel Ings (I Hate Suzie), David Morrissey (The Walking Dead), Christopher Rygh (Vikings: Valhalla), Paul Kaye (Game of Thrones), Kaya Scodelario (Crawl), Lisa Loven Kongsli (Wonder Woman), and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Loki).

Netflix’s live-action “Avatar: The Last Airbender” is back in production for Season 2, with the streamer revealing that Miya Cech has been cast as the fan-favorite character Toph.
In a clip released as part of Netflix’s annual Geeked Week fan event, Toph’s feet are seen in closeup before she stomps down and demonstrates her earthbending.
The 17-year-old Cech is likely best known to audiences as the younger version of Ali Wong’s character in the Netflix romantic comedy “Always Be My Maybe,” released in 2019. Funnily enough, she also played a younger version of Ali Wong’s character in an episode of the Netflix series “Beef.” She also starred in Nickelodeon’s short-lived series “The Astronauts” and had a supporting role in last year’s coming-of-age comedy “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.”
Toph was first introduced in Book 2 of the original “Last Airbender” animated series.
