Strength comes in different forms, and two new films with Irish actress Saoirse Ronan tell the tale. In Steve McQueen’s high-octane World War II drama “Blitz,” set in an embattled London, Ronan is Rita, a single mother searching for her young son who’s disappeared from a train ostensibly taking children to safety in the British countryside. As bombs fall and subway stations flood, Rita is just about the fiercest thing in London, abandoning the bomb factory where she works to find her boy at all costs.
In Nora Fingscheidt’s “The Outrun,” on the other hand, her character of Rona is an alcoholic who summons up the power to fight her demons by turning to the solitude of a remote island off the coast of Scotland.

Saoirse Ronan said alcoholism was a subject she “was always threatening to explore.” When she found Amy Liptrot’s book The Outrun, she decided to also make her producorial debut in developing it.
“Alcoholism for me was like the monster in the corner that I hadn’t dealt with for a very long time,” Ronan said. “It caused me a lot of pain and resentment and confusion in the way that it does for a loved one of an addict, in particular an alcoholic because so much of it happens in quite an intimate space. So I had been on the receiving end of that and could see how it can really destroy lives.”
Liptrot’s book was autobiographical. Ronan and director Nora Fingscheidt mutually agreed to change Ronan’s character’s name to Rona so that she would have more creative freedom. More on that soon, but first Ronan...

Saoirse Ronan is opening up about wanting to see more flawed female characters represented onscreen after working on The Outrun.
The Irish actress’ career has been packed with angsty yet relatable roles for young women in films like Lady Bird, Little Women and Brooklyn. Before turning 30, she received four Oscar nominations. Ronan recently spoke with Elle and revealed what it was like to play Rona, a complex character, who’s struggling to get sober in The Outrun.
“I was so ready for it. I felt confident enough in my ability, but also confident enough in who I was,” she said. “I didn’t feel like I was being held down by a need to only play likable people.”
Ronan recalled seeing traits in other characters onscreen that helped her draw inspiration. “I really responded to Lena Dunham’s characters in Girls, who are arseholes sometimes, but we’ve all got the capability for that.

Saoirse Ronan started in the industry at a pretty young age and immediately won the hearts of the masses. After dedicating so much of her life to movies and her fans, she is now 30, flirty and thriving, and just wants to relax a bit.

Nora Fingscheidt’s The Outrun is a screen adaptation of Amy Liptrot’s memoir which recounts the horrors of alcoholism in the same breath as it recounts the tonic powers of nature in beating that same evil. We are met with Rona, a young biology student, who is figuring out her life sans alcohol and in solitude. To mend her London-bred ills, Rona alights on her native place, Orkney Island, to explore the swathes of natural history and in doing so touch the open-ended strings of her personal life.
The fluid flow of time and space helps to render the film the texture of a memoir which interrelates and interfuses the protagonist’s previous life as an alcoholic and current life as a conservationist. In doing so, the personal memoir of the protagonist dances on a tightrope over an area that also makes enough space for a nature documentary.

2024’s The Outrun is this year’s great performance of a recovering alcoholic that inevitably deserves an Oscar nomination. Saoirse Ronan’s The Outrun tells the story of Rona, a 29-year-old alcoholic on her road to recovery after some terrible events traumatizing her for life. The non-chronological film might occasionally be a bit hard to take in, but at the end of the day, it’s a beautiful tale of hope and growth. To understand Rona’s experiences, the best way to understand her mind would be to go about the film as chronologically as possible. It’s the hair color that you’ve got to pay attention to. Rona grew up on a small, isolated island in Orkney, Scotland. A farm girl by birth, Rona’s an intelligent woman who easily grasps information. Her life begins to sparkle after she becomes addicted to alcohol and has outbursts while studying biology in London,...

Whilst the eyes of the world may be locked firmly on the other side of the Atlantic this morning, back here in Blighty there is at least some positivity still to be shared yet. Having shone last year when the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes brought Hollywood to a standstill, the independent British cinema scene has continued to shine throughout 2024, with revered greats, rising stars, returning masters, and bold new narratives all emerging to ensure the flame for indies from these shores has never burned brighter. As such, it comes as no great surprise that the announcement of this year's British Independent Film Awards nominees is a veritable treasure trove of great art and great artists that stand to represent the very best British filmmaking has to offer.
Leading the pack with an impressive 14 nominations — including nods for Best British Independent Film, Director, Screenplay, and Debut Director — is British-Irish filmmaker Rich Peppiatt...

The Best Actress Oscar race is looking more and more crowded as we get closer to the 2025 awards season, with numerous significant contenders in the running for those five slots. But if there’s one performance that’s surely going to make it in, it’s Saoirse Ronan in “The Outrun,” directed by Nora Fingscheidt. Why? Here are the Top 5 reasons …
1. Previous Oscar nominee.
At only 30 years old, Ronan has already received four Oscar nominations, and thus an acclaimed dramatic performance in her latest film will put her on the radar for many academy members. Her first nomination arrived in the Best Supporting Actress category for “Atonement” (2007) and then she was nominated in Best Actress for “Brooklyn” (2015), “Lady Bird” (2017), and “Little Women” (2019). Receiving as many Oscar noms as she has in such a short period of time shows that the academy is inclined to consider any new Ronan performance, and...

Saoirse Ronan's 'The Outrun': Nora Fingscheidt’s Portrait of Life’s Ocean of Chaos and Inevitability
Every year, there is a film that stands out from the rest. It isn’t occupied with fancy visual effects, grand stories, or even a showcase of artlike qualities. While these elements find their way into the film in subtle ways, ‘The Outrun’ (2024) manages to include an experimental structure, subdued character development, and a plethora of symbolic value with a story of addiction and the never ending struggle of trying with all heart to end it. A story that many people, especially women, will find relatability in. Helmed by rising director Nora Fingscheidt and acclaimed actress Saoirse Ronan in the lead role, ‘The Outrun’ manages to be the film of 2024 that so far succeeds in being artistic and stimulating while also a contemplative into the darker parts of life. Imagine standing in a seaweed field, battered by wind, kissed by the ocean, surrounded by an overpowering quiet. Now, place yourself at its center. That’s what Nora Fingscheidt’s “The Outrun” evokes: an intimate and intimidating isolation where memories swell, hijacking your thoughts, with the sound of the ocean crashing against the wind as your only companion.
When Amy Liptrot (journalist by profession and co-writer of this script) penned her memoir, I doubt she anticipated how deeply her experiences of addiction, recovery, and self-reflection would reverberate into something so achingly cinematic. She likely understood, though, that her birthplace, Orkney, is one of the most visually striking landscapes yet underutilized in cinema.
Orkney—a remote archipelago of some 70 islands in the northernmost reaches of Scotland—is home to rare wildlife and even scarcer human life. It’s here that Rona (Liptrot’s on-screen counterpart) returns to recover from years of alcoholism.

Saoirse Ronan just dropped a truth bomb about Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Chronicles of Narnia, and honestly? We’re a little worried. While Gerwig’s magic touch turned Little Women into cinematic gold and Barbie into a worldwide sensation, stepping into Narnia’s enchanted world might be a different beast. Ronan, who’s no stranger to working with Gerwig, hinted at challenges that could test even the most skilled director. And let’s face it, Narnia fans are notoriously protective of their beloved land of talking animals and epic battles.

There’s an easy, cliched way to sound design drunkenness. According to re-recording mixer Gregor Bonse, the film convention for conveying any sort of drug trip or inebriation is a step-and-repeat pattern of putting big reverb effects on key sounds and dialogue so that the scene in question feels unreal and detached; the sound tells us, loudly and obviously, that the characters are out of their minds. The approach can be great fun in a stoner comedy but can also put distance between the characters and the audience.
However, the pleasure and pain of Nora Fingscheidt’s film “The Outrun” is to stay — fearlessly, relentlessly, achingly — in the subjectivity of one-time biology PhD student Rona (Saoirse Ronan) as she struggles with alcohol addiction and finding a direction for her life. The film’s sound design, accordingly, doesn’t make easy delineations between sober and not, wounded or healed; even the sounds of Orkney and London,...

It’s how nature helped Rona get her groove back. In this

Saoirse Ronan “really fell in love with how Amy [Liptrot] wrote about her home, how poetically she described her memory of growing up in the Orkney Islands, and balanced that so beautifully and so effectively with the raw honesty of her struggle with addiction.” That’s what attracted her to “The Outrun” as both an actor and producer. Watch our complete video interview with Ronan above.
“The Outrun” follows Rona, a fictionalized version of author Liptrot, as she returns home to Orkney in northern Scotland after living for a tumultuous decade in London. The scenes in Orkney were shot on location, and “when you’re outdoors and you’re either working on a farm or you’re at the side of a cliff by the ocean, the elements have such an impact on your sense of self, your energy, how alert and open you are to your surroundings … It was almost like a scene partner.

As written, the question was meant to be open-ended: “How do you the find emotional truth in a character?” If there’s any connective thread between the various roles in Saoirse Ronan’s impressive body of work, it’s that: some ineffable honesty about the emotional journey she’s carrying through her characters.
Fortunately, Ronan is astute enough and open enough to wrestle with such a question with grace and insight. That’s probably why she’s such a good actress.
“How do you breathe?,” Ronan responded with a laugh when asked about said emotional truth during a recent sitdown with IndieWire. “It sounds a bit pretentious to say, but I have grown up disappearing into the make-believe, and that helps me make sense out of the real world. Every movie alcoholic lets you ride shotgun with them to their rock bottom, and the low point that Saoirse Ronan’s character — her name is Rona — hits headfirst in The Outrun is a high-impact one. Saoirse Ronan is one of the most acclaimed actresses working today, having earned four Oscar nominations by the time she turned 30. Well, it seems likely that she will obtain her fifth nomination in 2025, as the alcoholism drama The Outrun allows her to give one of the finest performances of her career yet. Apart from Ronan’s stunning turn and the film’s beautiful visuals, The Outrun could prove to be somewhat off-putting to audiences with its low-key, restrained approach to its themes and story.

Heart-wrenching story adapted from Amy Liptrot’s memoir is as tough as its Orkney landscapes
The title means an outlying coastal piece of farmland on Orkney; it is not suitable for cultivation, but so continually windswept with Atlantic spray that its grass stays short as if naturally tended, and so functions metaphorically in various ways. It could be a wholesome, bracing, healing place for troubled city dwellers; or a place whose restorative quality is an illusion, a place every bit as violent and mysteriously destructive as the city; or it could even somehow stand for the actual person who has come there, the low-functioning addict, shaped and flattened by forces all but impossible to outrun.
Saoirse Ronan is outstanding in this painful, involving addiction-recovery drama, directed by Nora Fingscheidt and adapted by Fingscheidt and Amy Liptrot from Liptrot’s own 2017 memoir of the same title and co-produced by Ronan with her husband Jack Lowden.

The Outrun, directed by Nora Fingscheidt, is a quiet yet emotionally resonant adaptation of Amy Liptrot’s 2016 memoir by the same name. It’s a meditative, introspective film that captures the struggle for sobriety and self-discovery amid the stark beauty of the Scottish islands.
Rona, having fled her troubled past in London, finds herself reconnected to the wild, elemental landscapes of her childhood on the isles of Orkney. Rona’s story unfolds in non-linear fragments, with flashbacks guiding the viewer between her chaotic downfall in London and her early steps toward sobriety on her father’s sheep farm.
Her father (Stephen Dillane), who has long struggled with manic highs and depressive lows, is a source of deep-seated trauma that Rona has numbed with alcohol and self-destructive behaviour for years.

Is there any young actor on a par with Saoirse Ronan? She seamlessly inhabits every role, from her breakout as precocious 13-year-old Briony in Atonement to her spirited take on Jo March in Little Women. It’s no wonder she bagged four Oscar nominations before turning 30. To the surprise of nobody, she astonishes again in this flawed but engaging fictionalised adaptation of a memoir by Amy Liptrot, as Rona, a young woman on the long, painful path to sobriety.
In a magical opening sequence, director Nora Fingscheidt takes us beneath the waves of Orkney, a cluster of islands off the coast of Scotland. The sea is a vivid aquamarine, with curious seals peeping through forests of green and brown weed, while Rona recounts the myth of the selkie, creatures that transform from humans to seals. We then find Rona herself, dancing at an East London party. The scenes fuse, with Rona now dancing underwater,...

Saoirse Ronan is gearing up for a fierce Oscar season, with two performances poised to battle for the industry’s top honors.
Variety confirms Ronan will compete in both the lead actress race for the Sundance hit “The Outrun” and supporting actress for her upcoming work in the World War II epic “Blitz” — potentially setting her up as a double acting nominee this awards season. If double-nominated, which is currently projected on Variety Awards Circuit’s predictions, she would be the 13th person and youngest actor to receive two acting nominations in the same year. Seven of the 12 previous actors went on to win for one of their nominated works.

Gold Derby can now report that Saoirse Ronan is officially making an awards move long expected. The four-time Oscar nominee will campaign as Best Supporting Actress for “Blitz,” avoiding a possible vote split with her other big contender of “The Outrun,” which has her as Best Actress.
From Apple Original Films, “Blitz” has yet to me seen by major critics or festival crowds but is one of this year’s hottest contenders from past Oscar champ Steve McQueen. It will debut at the BFI London Film Festival on October 9. Its theatrical opening is a month later on November 1. And then it’ll be on Apple TV+ starting on November 22.
For this movie, Ronan plays the distraught mother of a young boy (Elliott Heffernan) who goes on a perilous adventure during World War II. It co-stars Harris Dickinson and is written, directed and produced by McQueen. View the trailer below:

A young woman sits on the beach in Orkney, the sea stretching out endlessly in front of her, a pair of headphones strapped to her ears, blaring electronic beats. We see this image repeated a couple of times in Nora Fingscheidt’s The Outrun and, in many ways, it represents the whole of the film—a conflict between the new and the old, the noise and motion of the modern world and space and stillness of the old. And then there’s the woman caught between these two converging currents, trying not to be pulled apart by them.
Rona (Saoirse Ronan) is a recovering alcoholic who’s returned to her familial home in Orkney after spinning out of control as a biology student in London. The story flows seamlessly back and forth between this newly sober chapter of her life and flashes of her time in London. At first, it...

"But there is only so much height any wave can sustain, before it comes crashing down." Sony Pictures Classics has revealed the official US trailer for The Outrun, which premiered at both the 2024 Sundance & Berlin Film Festivals earlier this year. It's the exact same trailer as the UK trailer from before but with new quotes. This acclaimed film is based on Amy Liptrot's memoir, the story of an alcoholic woman who returns to her homeland - the remote Orkney Islands located off the northern coast of Scotland at the very top of the UK. After living life on the edge in London, Rona attempts to come to terms with her past. She returns to the wild beauty of Orkney (where she grew up) hoping to heal. Starring Saoirse Ronan as Rona in one of her best performances yet. The Outrun is a searingly honest drama about addiction, survival and...

After a relatively quiet last few years, Saoirse Ronan is returning in a major way this fall, leading two new features: first up, Nora Fingscheidt’s Sundance highlight The Outrun followed by Steve McQueen’s Blitz. The former is set for an October 4 release from Sony Pictures Classics and now the new trailer has arrived.
Here’s the synopsis: “After a decade away in London, 29-year-old Rona (Saoirse Ronan) returns home to the Orkney Islands. Sober but lonely, she tries to suppress her memory of the events which set her on this journey of recovery. Slowly the mystical land enters her inner world and – one day at a time – Rona finds hope and strength in herself among the heavy gales and the bracingly cold sea. Based on the bestselling memoir by Amy Liptrot, who co-wrote the screenplay with Fingscheidt, The Outrun is an acutely honest drama about addiction and recovery.

Many films discuss how a partnership or relationship could be ruined if one of the partners is emotionally unavailable and toxic. It only adds to our understanding of how a relationship should be, it should not affect anyone to the point that it causes trauma to either partner. Tyler Perry’s Divorce in the Black is one such movie that discusses a woman trying hard to stay in a marriage with her husband, but she eventually chooses to walk out.

Tyler Perry is no stranger to pushing boundaries with melodrama. The acclaimed director and writer has tackled controversial topics through popular films and TV shows targeting African American audiences for decades. His latest offering, Divorce in the Black, saw Perry team up with streaming giant Amazon Prime, reuniting frequent collaborators Meagan Good and Cory Hardrict in the lead roles.
The movie centers on Good’s character Ava, trapped in an abusive marriage to Hardrict’s troubled character Dallas. When Dallas abruptly asks for a divorce, Ava returns home to the supportive embrace of her religious family in rural Georgia as she picks up the pieces. From this premise rich with dramatic potential, viewers expected Perry’s signature blend of raw emotion, social commentary, and wild plot twists.

There are good movies that, in detail, discuss the dynamics of a married couple that have been in a relationship for a long time. It goes into detail about the challenges they face as a long-term couple. The trials and tribulations are what make or break them. Blue Valentine, Revolutionary Road, and Marriage Story are some of the finest examples of how filmmakers can portray the intimacy shared by a couple who are on the verge of breaking up. Actor/Director Tyler Perry’s new directorial venture on Amazon Prime Video, Divorce in the Black, is probably the antithesis of what the above-mentioned movies represent. Released on the streaming platform on July 11, 2024, the movie captures the unstable relationship between Ava and her husband, Dallas.

Sometimes, when watching a movie like Tyler Perry’s Divorce in the Black, you grade them on a curve. This depends on the aspirations of the filmmaker(s) and the intended audience. After all, can you grade pornography in the same way you would evaluate Citizen Kane? Before you mock my point, remember that Roger Ebert used to review them, ensuring Russ Meyer received his due.
This brings us to another entry from the uber-successful filmmaker Tyler Perry. To put it politely, his latest film, Tyler Perry’s Divorce in the Black, has something for everyone. The truth, however, is that the movie is wildly uneven. Perry’s script morphs from a thoughtful story about a woman dealing with divorce into Sleeping with the Enemy territory.

Ava’s father is a preacher, and her mother is a pious woman, while on the other hand, Dallas’ mom is not particularly interested in the church or Ava’s father’s preachings. Saoirse Ronan is taking on one of her most intense roles yet.

Although peculiarly still without U.S. distribution some five months after its Sundance premiere, Nora Fingscheidt’s addiction drama The Outrun, starring Saoirse Ronan, will arrive in the UK this September. Ahead of the release, the first trailer has now arrived.
Here’s the synopsis: “Saoirse Ronan stars as Rona, who, fresh out of rehab, returns to the Orkney Islands; a place both wild and beautiful right off the Scottish coast. After more than a decade of living life on the edge in London, where she both found and lost love, Rona – now 30 – attempts to come to terms with her troubled past. As she reconnects with the dramatic landscape where she grew up, memories of her traumatic childhood merge with more recent challenging events that have set her on the path to recovery.”
