With every step she took on the catwalk, Bethann Hardison broke new ground. She did it while strutting in Chester Weinberg’s A-line skirts across the private showrooms of Manhattan’s garment district, where clients believed her to be “out of line.” She did it while dazzling audience members in Versailles in 1973, where she showed Europeans that girls of color brought personality to the runway and were not just human clothes-hangers. She did it ferociously, defiantly, and as shown in the documentary Invisible Beauty, she did it without ever planning to.
Hardison never set out to become the first Black supermodel. In fact, the scope of her ambitions and how they were perceived by society wasn’t something she ever even thought about. And yet, in an industry that has perpetuated racist practices for as long as it’s existed, she became a screen onto which people projected their fears and hopes.

Huluager Endeshaw in Sarah Noa Bozenhardt’s Among Us Women (Unter Uns Frauen), co-directed with Daniel Abate Tilahun
My first interaction with Among Us Women (Unter Uns Frauen) director Sarah Noa Bozenhardt was when I sent in a question during the Face to Face with German Films in 2022 filmmakers panel in Berlin: “Which film you saw did you particularly like in 2021?” Her response was the documentary Displaced by Sharon Ryba-Kahn and the fiction film Precious Ivie by Sarah Blaßkiewitz.
Sarah Noa Bozenhardt with Anne-Katrin Titze (wearing Liya Kebede’s lemlem) on the fabrics: “I’m really happy that you mention this because this is something we experimented a lot with.”
Among Us Women, co-directed with Daniel Abate Tilahun, shot by Bernarda Cornejo Pinto, and edited by Andrea Muñoz is based on the stories of Huluager Endeshaw, Endal Gedif, Welela Assaye, and Sirkalem Teshome, in a creative collaboration with the community of Megendi in Ethiopia.

Jake Gyllenhaal's desire for a family of his own finally came true - well, kind of. In a new commercial for Calvin Klein's Eternity fragrance, the actor appears as the doting father of 4-year-old actress Leila and the husband of model Liya Kebede. During the black and white commercial, Jake and Liya recite poet E. E. Cummings's "I Carry Your Heart With Me" to the young girl, and honestly, I've never felt so turned on and simultaneously emotional in my entire life. I'm trying so hard to resist slipping in a cliche "daddy" reference, but Tbh, I'm struggling. If you're ready for your ovaries to burst, watch the ad above and your crush on obsession with Jake will undoubtedly increase tenfold.

There is a strangely gloomy and dark atmosphere to Deception as we follow Virgil, the uptight, slightly germophobic and arrogant auctioneer as he stalks around, not...

The name of Costa-Gavras is synonymous with politically-dosed narratives – we often cite Z and Missing as seminal films within the genre and the filmmaker’s body of work. Feted at the ’13 editions of Mumbai and Mill Valley, just this past weekend [Cohen Media Group 10.25] , the filmmaker continued the thematic streak with Capital, a financial thriller that was featured at Tiff 2012 and features an international flavored cast of Gad Elmaleh, Gabriel Byrne and Liya Kebede (Lord of War). We were provided with an exclusive clip (see below) :

Title: Capital Director: Costa-Gavras Starring: Gad Elmaleh, Gabriel Byrne, Liya Kebede and Natacha Régnier) Struggling to achieve their goals can be a difficult journey for many people, as they question the lengths they’ll go to in order to accomplish their objectives. But once a person finally realizes their dreams, they discover that outsmarting their competitors in order to maintain their position can be just as difficult, or even more challenging, than their rise to the top. Le Capital
Directed by Costa Gavras
Written by Jean-Claude Grumberg and Costa Garvas
France, 2012
“Le Capital”, Greek-French filmmaker Costa Gavras’ latest work has a motley assortment of problems, bespeckled with intermittent charisma which proves insufficient to masque the utter ridiculousness that makes up large swathes of the film. It stars Gad Elmaleh (a dismal choice) as Marc Tourneuil, an uppity upper-middle class banker who incidentally rises to the top position of the bank he works for. While the old guard at the bank consider him more of a puppet placeholder that would be easily manipulated, Elmaleh’s character has other ideas: by ostensibly acquiescing to an American fund bent on taking over control of the bank, which includes orchestrating a 10% lay-off of the bank’s global workforce, Tourneuil starts on an ambitious course of consolidating his grip on power and earning himself tens of millions in legal and illegal bonuses.

The first Tiff premiere has been picked up ahead of its debut, as Cohen Media Group (Frozen River, The Lady, The Awakening) grabbed the latest political suspense thriller from the great Costa-Gavras. The man responsible for such classics as Z and Missing has returned after a few years with Capital, which takes a look at the high finance sector of France.
We’ve also found the first trailer, which indicates quite a thrilling take on a new sort of Robin Hood. Judging by this fast acquisition, it looks Costa-Gravas has replicated the same intense style found in some of his other work. Check out the trailer below for the film adapted from Stephane Osmont‘s novel and starring Gabriel Byrne, Gad Elmaleh, Natacha Regnier, Céline Sallette, Liya Kebede, Hyppolite Girardot, Daniel Mesguich and Bernard Le Coq.
Capital premieres at Tiff, but no Us release date as been announced yet.

Hey Simon Doonan, what do you know about the hotel industry?
Give an average bloke a room key and a mint on his pillow and suddenly that person turns into a rule-breaking, wild-eyed, Charlie Sheenian sexual outlaw. Stick an average broad in a hotel bar and she turns into Rielle Hunter. A friend of mine who works in the hotel industry keeps me abreast of all the latest trends in anti-social and revolting guest behavior. According to my “hospitality insider,” nefarious guest activities are only becoming more foul and disturbing. Though he enjoys his work, he has started to feel somewhat constrained, specifically in regard to fabric choices. Whether for upholstery, drapes, or bedding, every textile he selects must now be Bcp-resistant, by which he means resistant to—drumroll—blood, cum, and poo.

Jean-Jacques Annaud was making a film about oil wars in the desert. Then the Arab spring started, his crew were evacuated, and he had to explain why he had 300 guns
One day in 2010, over tea in Barcelona, Antonio Banderas took Jean-Jacques Annaud firmly by the wrist, looked deep into the French director's eyes and said: "I have always dreamed of playing an Arab. Let me be in your film." It's tempting to imagine Banderas saying these words in the same way he says "I am Puss – in boots!" in Shrek, before making his pupils dilate seductively. But it probably wasn't quite like that.
Annaud was scouring Europe and the Middle East to cast Black Gold, which tells the freighted and fruity story of two Arab kings who unsheath their ancestral scimitars in the 1930s and do battle over a strip of desert, under which some of the world's biggest oilfields have just been discovered.

The music was recorded last month at Abbey Road Studios in London. The National is reporting that Quatari singer Fahad Al Kubaisi worked with Horner on the picture’s opening track, which is supposed to reflect the mood of the soldiers in the film as they prepare for war. He also recorded a traditional Bedouin song with Qatari composer Abdulla Al Mannai. Black Gold tells the story of the rivalry between two Emirs in Arabia in the 1930’s just as oil is being discovered. The movie starring Antonio Banderas, Mark Strong, Tahar Rahim, Freida Pinto and Liya Kebede is set to premiere at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival in late October and will be opening in several...
