Kevin Hart’s Chicken Man is on the ground, breathing hard in fear, as Samuel L. Jackson’s badass gangster Frank Moten, known as the Black Godfather, holds a gun.
Subtly channeling Jackson’s legendary Pulp Fiction persona Jules Winnfield, Frank thunders, “You do believe in God, right?” Hart’s Chicken Man reply “with all my soul” produces a soft, but stern “then testify” from Frank. Not long after, a shot is fired, followed by a visual rewinding that flashes back to two weeks earlier, when Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist launched its story.
To launch the hit Peacock limited series — which Hart produces through his Hartbeat shingle with Will Packer — a black screened disclaimer appeared all capped in yellow type with the words “Based On Some Shit,” pause, “That Really Happened.” The series’ eighth and final episode returned to that moment, later revealing that Gordon “Chicken...

Near the end of the second episode of Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist’s three-episode debut, one of New York City’s fiercest and deadliest gangsters, Frank Moten, played by Samuel L. Jackson, hovers over a petrified small-time Atlanta hustler known as Chicken Man, played by Kevin Hart, after leaving a historic boxing match in that Southern city in 1970.
Moten and his henchmen have taken Gordon “Chicken Man” Williams and a Miami gangster named Harvey (Celestino Cornielle) out to a field in Atlanta, where he quickly executes the Florida crime boss for making insulting comments to him before the unsanctioned boxing match between Muhammad Ali and Jerry Quarry. Chicken Man had made the mistake of trying to run a scam on Moten while he was watching the fight and made a promise he couldn’t deliver on, which resulted in his invitation out to the field for a final destination.

Muhammad Ali called Oct. 26, 1970, his “day of judgment.” His refusal to be inducted to the Army during the Vietnam War, on moral and religious grounds, had pushed him out of the ring for 43 months. But that night in Atlanta, his boxing license restored, he faced “The Great White Hope” Jerry Quarry in his long-awaited return to the ring. Black royalty from Harlem to Birmingham showed up and showed out: Diana Ross, Sidney Poitier, Hank Aaron, and Corretta Scott King filled ringside seats. Filling the stands right alongside them were a bevy of gangsters,...

“Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist,” the eight-episode miniseries (currently streaming on Peacock), documents two major events in Atlanta’s history. While Muhammad Ali made his professional boxing comeback with a win against Jerry Quarry at Atlanta’s Municipal Auditorium on October 26, 1970, a group of hoodlums robbed the Black Mafia of more than $1 million in cash and jewelry at a nearby after-party. As a result, Atlanta eventually became a Black Mecca.
At the center of “Fight Night” is street hustler Gordon “Chicken Man” Williams (Kevin Hart), who hosts the after-party in honor of New York mobster Frank Moten (Samuel L. Jackson), who controls the gangs. While Chicken Man sees Atlanta as a potential Black Vegas, Moten has more ambitious plans for turning the city into a Black Mecca. But just when it looks like they can work together, the robbery turns Chicken Man into the prime suspect. In the aftermath,...

An infamous Atlanta crime and an all-star cast headline the meticulously crafted and lavish drama Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist. Inspired by the true-crime podcast of the same name, it centers on Muhammad Ali’s historic 1970 comeback match against Jerry Quarry and premieres on 50th anniversary of the event. Though Ali was victorious over Jerry Quarry, the real excitement was unfolding elsewhere in the city.
A lavish afterparty held in Atlanta’s West End would go down in history, though not for the reasons anyone expected. In late October 1970, Muhammad Ali returned to the boxing ring after being suspended from the sport three years prior for his refusal to be drafted in the Vietnam War. Though the legendary boxer won the fight against opponent Jerry Quarry, the front pages of Atlanta’s newspapers the next day boasted a tale much more compelling than Ali’s comeback. Peacock’s forthcoming limited series, “Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist,” based on the true-crime podcast, tells the story of the greatest robbery in Georgia’s history and how Atlanta transformed into the Black Mecca.
“I read the script, and I was like, whoa,” series star Taraji P. Henson told Variety during a sit-down conversation at the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival (Mvaaff), where the series premiered ahead of its Sept. 5 debut on Peacock.
“I remember I had a good two friends move down there in the early nineties.

Seduction of the Innocent will release on February 19, 2013. New York Times bestselling author Max Allan Collins, known for his book Road to Perdition, once again has outdone himself with Seduction of the Innocent, which blends fact and fiction in a true-thriller fashion!
Amanda Dyar: Seduction of the Innocent is an upcoming novel from yourself that focuses on the real life story of 1950s proposed ban of violent and horror-filled comic books. How did you become involved in this project, and how did you prepare for the beginning of your work?
Max Allan Collins: Seduction of the Innocent takes a fairly lighthearted approach to a serious subject, and I hope it doesn't stint on either one. The format is a Golden Age mystery -- that's the era of Rex Stout, Agatha Christie, Ellery Queen, Erle Stanley Gardner -- since the '50s setting of the novel is appropriate to that kind of story.
