The actress told Entertainment Tonight that she “probably should have called my friends” instead of taking to social media to slam the unauthorized image. Wicked Part One almost went head to head with Disney’s Moana 2 on November 27, 2024, and before that, it was set to bow Christmas 2024, but it moved up a week to the Friday before Thanksgiving, November 22, 2024. Its new opponent will be Paramount’s Gladiator II starring Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal among others.

There have long been talks of taking Wicked from stage to screen and the popular Broadway musical is finally being adapted into a two-part feature film. Derived from The Wizard of Oz and based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel, it tells the origin story of the Wicked Witch of the West. By changing the audience's original perception of Elphaba and revealing the details of her past, Wicked transforms one of cinema's most notable villains into the ultimate underdog.

The cast of the musical has changed several times over the years. However, Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel played the original duo when the show first opened in 2003. Now the baton is being passed to Cynthia Erivon and Ariana Grande, who will be taking on the lead roles in Wicked's latest adaption. In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Cynthia Erivo opens up about playing Elphaba and all the preparation required for the part.

Wicked's original star Kristin Chenoweth explains why a two-part movie adaptation makes sense for the award-winning musical. Based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, Wicked was first brought to life as a musical production in 2003. Originally starring Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda and Idina Menzel as Elphaba, Wicked explores the events leading up to and upon Dorothy's arrival in the Land of Oz. Serving as an imaginative prequel to The Wizard of Oz, Wicked follows unlikely friends Glinda and Elphaba as they grow into their roles as The Good Witch and The Wicked Witch of the West. A massive success on Broadway, a highly-anticipated movie adaptation of Wicked is on the way, with director Jon M. Chu confirming it will be split into two parts.

The Wicked films have cast six new actors in major roles. The projects, which are being helmed by Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu, are adapted from the stage musical by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, that is itself adapted from the 1995 novel of the same name by Gregory Maguire, which imagines an origin story for The Wizard of Oz's Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba. The long-awaited film adaptation will premiere in two parts on Christmas 2024 and 2025, and has already cast Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda along with an ensemble of talent that includes Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum.

Per Variety, a new casting announcement reveals that several major roles have been filled for the upcoming Wicked movie adaptations. This includes Marissa Bode, a veteran child actor and wheelchair user and who will be making her feature film debut as Elphaba's younger sister Nessarose.

Jon M. Chu’s “Wicked” films have found a few more citizens of the Emerald City, filling out the already star-studded cast.

Marissa Bode will make her feature film debut as Nessarose, Elphaba’s sister. Bode, like her character, uses a wheelchair, and she has been acting since she was 8 years old. “Saturday Night Live” star Bowen Yang and “Lockwood & Co” star Bronwyn James also join the roster as Pfannee and ShenShen, classmates of Elphaba and Glinda at Shiz University.

Additional casting includes “The Greatest Showman” standout Keala Settle as Miss Coddle, Aaron Teoh as Avaric and Colin Michael Carmichael as Professor Nikidik. They join previously announced cast members Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, who will play Glinda and Elphaba.

Exclusive: Universal and director Jon Chu have finalized their ensemble for its adaptation of the global hit Wicked with Marissa Bode, Bowen Yang and Bronwyn James joining the film. Bode will be playing Nessarose, Elphaba’s sister. The character is a wheelchair user, as is the Los Angeles-based Bode, who has been acting since the age of eight in a number of plays and musicals. Yang and James will play Pfannee and ShenShen, respectively, fellow classmates of Elphaba and Glinda at Shiz. As for Settle, she will play Miss Coddle, Teoh will play Avaric and Carmichael will play Nikidik. The film will be released in two parts as Christmas Day events in 2024 and 2025.
