Jennifer Lawrence may be a Hollywood heavyweight today, but even she’s haunted by a role that slipped through her fingers: Alice in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. During an interview on the Howard Stern Show, the Red Sparrow actress confessed that this lost opportunity devastated her.
While we know Lawrence today as a go-to star for bold roles, her early career was littered with auditions—some successful, some not so much. And this one? Losing out on Alice in Wonderland stung. She shared that, at the time, she and fellow actress Emma Stone were often up for the same parts, with this one hitting particularly hard. “Emma Stone and I had this conversation once, ’cause we used to always audition for the same thing…...

Keep reading to find out more…“I think quite early on in a career, you have to be able to understand why the ‘no’ is happening,” Juno said. “Of course, you can’t help but take it personally sometimes. I was 17 when Tim Burton made Alice in Wonderland. I have a first-edition copy of Alice in Wonderland that I actually sleep with on my bedside table like it’s the Bible.”
While Juno said that playing Alice was her “dream role,” she wasn’t able to land an audition with Tim and the role went to Mia Wasikowska.

The entire team behind the original “A Quiet Place” has more or less cashed in on the goodwill from that first film to the fullest possible extent—including the I.P. itself, instantly proving that it can’t be sustained for more than a single outing. Not least of these savvy artists is its pair of screenwriters, Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, who’ve leveraged the success of their neat little premise (as long as you don’t think about it for more than 15 seconds) into a support line for their flailing joint career as writer-directors. Now, just over a year after somehow making “Adam Driver Fights Dinosaurs” boring, Beck and Woods return with a new selling point unlikely to fail them quite as surprisingly as their previous one had.

It's finally here! October, the best month of the year, especially if you're a horror movie fan. Any time of year is the right time to watch a horror movie, but there's something extra special about watching horror movies as we draw closer and closer to Halloween. And to help you get into the spirit of the season, this month's horror streaming roundup is all about ghost movies! Not just haunted house movies, mind you — but movies about ghosts and all their spooky antics. I like all horror subgenres. Vampires? Hell yes. Slashers? Absolutely. Monsters? Yep! But of all the various types of horror movies, movies about ghosts are my personal favorite. I can't say that I believe in ghosts, but like Fox Mulder, I want to believe. Until some sort of ghostly evidence presents itself to me, I'll stick with the movies. So grab your candy corn, carve a pumpkin or two,...

Lewis Carroll's 1871 fable "Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There" features a notable scene wherein the young titular protagonist runs across a pair of whimsically dunderheaded identical twins while lost in an alternate dimension. The characters are named Tweedledee and Tweedledum and are based on numerous 18th-century folk poems variously attributed to John Byron, John Pope, and Jonathan Swift. In an early epigram by Byron, the two characters agree to have a battle but are startled by a crow, and forget to fight each other. It wouldn't be until the publication of "Through the Looking Glass," and John Tenniel's illustrations therein, that Tweedledee and Tweedledum would be depicted as identical twins.
In Carroll's book, the twins reenact the Byron epigram and flee when a crow appears. Some might say that Tweedledee and Tweedledum represent easily distracted governments, or merely the capriciousness of children. Either way,...

Tim Burton is one of our most distinctive filmmakers. Whether you love him, hate him, or land somewhere in the middle, there is no denying that Burton has a voice and that voice has become rather valuable. From proving that "Batman" could be an A-tier superhero franchise to producing undeniable classics like "Beetlejuice," he's been making his mark on cinema for decades. Burton's biggest moment came in 2010 when his live-action take on "Alice in Wonderland" hit theaters. Divisive though the movie may be, it made box office history at the time -- and what's more, it laid the groundwork for the next decade of blockbuster filmmaking in Hollywood, particularly at Disney.
In the modern era, a big blockbuster film making $1 billion or more at the box office is not all that uncommon. To date, 55 movies have made at least that much money worldwide. Rather crucially, though, the vast majority of...

Guillermo del Toro recalls the moment he realised his gothic romance Crimson Peak was destined to not find its audience.
Given the incredible quality of his filmography, 2015’s Crimson Peak is sometimes viewed as a misstep for Guillermo del Toro. The dark gothic romance earned $75 million from a $57 million budget and picked up generally favourable reviews from critics. For a filmmaker who has won Oscars and produced some incredibly revered films, that does leave Crimson Peak as something as an outlier.
It should be added though that the film still very much has an audience that will tell you what a great watch it is. Film Stories is one of them, given that we put it on our list of 11 creepy and unsettling films that aren’t traditional horror movies back in 2022.
According to del Toro, that ‘s the reason why the film didn’t perform as well as he’d hoped.

Well, now we know what film Guillermo del Toro was referring to when he reflected on his movies being “hobbled” at the box office by bad studio marketing.
After del Toro tweeted that in his 30-year career, he has had “three wonderful films hampered and hobbled by misguided marketing,” it turns out that “Crimson Peak” is one of them. (The other del Toro has publicly said is his 2012 animated film “Rise of the Guardians.”)
Now, del Toro is reflecting on the legacy of his 2015 Gothic romance film “Crimson Peak” to Vulture. The feature starred Mia Wasikowska as the new bride of a mysterious, wealthy recluse (Tom Hiddleston) whose sister (Jessica Chastain) has sinister intentions. Charlie Hunnam also starred.
Del Toro admitted that the film, despite its buzzy cast, was “doomed” at the box office due to its wrongful marketing label of being a horror movie.

Renowned French filmmaker Mia Hansen-Løve (One Fine Morning) has revealed her next film to be If Love Should Die, a biopic of 18th century English writer, philosopher, and women’s rights advocate, Mary Wollstonecraft.
Slated to film in the United Kingdom, France, Scandinavia and Portugal in 2025, the project’s logline is as follows: On the eve of the French Revolution, an impoverished young Englishwoman makes the bold decision to leave her life according to the ideals of the enlightenment.
Wollstonecraft is best known for her work A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, published in 1792, where she argued that women are not naturally inferior to men, even if they appeared so in her time because they lacked equal access to education. Wollstonecraft believed that both men and women should be treated as rational beings and imagined a social order founded on reason. Her ideas and writings laid the groundwork for the feminist movement,...

The Tim Burton and Johnny Depp collaborations are certainly prolific. While Depp was a teen star on the Fox series 21 Jump Street, he had a weird creative force inside of him that a high school cop series didn’t fulfill. Then came a new movie called Edward Scissorhands that paired Depp with his long-time director friend. Deadline reports that Depp is being featured in a new docu-series that’s a retrospective on the career of Tim Burton, and the actor reveals who he beat out for the part of Edward.
According to People, Depp said the competition was stiff for the titular character and names like Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise and even the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, were being considered for the role. Depp explained that Cruise “was not far away from actually playing Edward Scissorhands — true story.” Depp admitted to thinking, “He’s never going to cast...

“Crimson Peak” is a movie directed by Guillermo del Toro starring Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain and Tom Hiddleston.
Guillermo del Toro is one of those directors who, in a world where everything seems to be mass-produced, has managed to forge his own signature style and aesthetic, captivated a loyal audience. Crimson Peak may be the quintessential Guillermo del Toro film, as it compresses his fetishistic attention to detail into a single looming set where creaking floorboards, scores of dying moths, and the frequent intrusions of mutilated ghosts are just pieces in the giant dollhouse where the director merrily plays. The combination of gothic ghost story and harlequin romance doesn’t break new ground for either genre, but the intensity of Brandt Gordon’s art direction and Kate Hawley’s costume design reinforce the innate connection that period romance and horror share in how these genres so purely express their most profound ideas through ornate style.
Amusingly, the focus of the film’s first act—the gamesmanship of high society’s courtship rituals playing out in well-lit parlors—is no less tense than the story’s eventual retreat into the dark confines of Allerdale Hall. The most dominant sound effects in...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review for “Club Zero,” a presupposition story about eating techniques that can lead to complete elimination for food, written and directed by Jennifer Hausner. In select theaters since March 15th. See local listings
Rating: 5.0/5.0
The film is set in an elite boarding school, which brings in progressive teachers. One such guru who is instructing a group of students is Miss Novak (Mia Wasikowska), a leader in “conscious eating.” She instructs her new pupils to apply a special thought process to food, eventually weaning themselves off the eating of larger amounts, which is justified as the food industry contribution to world destruction in our modern era. But the experiment goes too far, and Miss Novak’s rule breaking closeness to a particular male student comes under scrutiny. Will any of the pupils join Club Zero, the elimination of a need to eat?

Across her five previous features, Austrian director Jessica Hausner has developed a distinctly unique tone––one which carries through her sixth outing Club Zero. Led by Mia Wasikowska, the dark satire follows a nutrition teacher at an elite school whose relationship with five students takes a dangerous turn. While Hausner is perhaps intentionally poking the bear as it relates to eating disorders, one could swap out the subject of her new film to another topic du jour and still retain a cogent, one-of-a-kind look at cult mentality.
Ahead of Film Movement’s theatrical release of Club Zero this Friday––followed by their digital release of new 4K restorations of Lovely Rita and Hotel, along with Lourdes, on March 29––I spoke with Hausner about being inspired by fairy tales, the provocation of withholding food, collaborating with Mia Wasikowska, divisive reactions, the overwhelming stress of youth, and more.

Few sacred cows emerge unscathed from director Jessica Hausner’s Club Zero. No matter where audiences sit on the political spectrum, they’re liable find something discomfiting, if not enraging, in the film. Hausner and co-writer Géraldine Bajard can be applauded for the inclusivity of their derision, which is hostile to all forms of complacency. Then again, maybe it’s too easy to toss people and ideas so indiscriminately into the vat of irony while defending nothing, potentially leaving the viewer at a tiresome, cynical impasse.
This caustic satire follows a group of students at a private high school who sign up for a nutrition course taught by Ms. Novak (Mia Wasikowska), who’s hired at the recommendation of the parent board. Ms. Novak teaches—or rather, preaches—the doctrine of “conscious eating.” Each student has their reasons for enrolling: Helen (Gwen Currant) to protect the environment by cutting down on consumption,...

From the three Korean filmmakers that first made the step towards Hollywood, Park Chan-wook with “Stoker”, Kim Jee-woon with “The Last Stand”, and Bong Joon-ho with “Snowpiercer”, the first one was the most controversial film among the critics, since others considered it a masterpiece and others leveled it lower than Park's South Korean productions. Evidently, Park's English debut has some issues, as the South Korean did not adapt fully to Hollywood aesthetics, but “Stoker” remains a very competent film, while the things Park learned from its shooting definitely helped him change his style for the better in “The Handmaiden”

Across her five previous features, Austrian director Jessica Hausner has developed a distinctly unique tone and now she’s back with her sixth outing, Club Zero. Led by Mia Wasikowska, the dark satire follows a nutrition teacher at an elite school whose relationship with five students takes a dangerous turn. Following a Cannes premiere last year, Film Movement picked it up for a U.S. release on March 15 in theaters and now the first trailer and poster have landed.
Here’s the synopsis: “At an international boarding school, an unassuming, yet rigorous, Miss Novak (Mia Wasikowska) joins the teaching staff to instruct a new class on “conscious eating.” Her impressionable teenage students each have their own reasons for joining the class – to improve fitness, reduce their carbon footprint, or get extra credit. Although early lectures focus on mindful consumption, Miss Novak’s discussions soon become increasingly disordered and extreme. A suspicious headmistress,...

"Don't you get it? It's a question of faith." Film Movement has revealed an official trailer for Club Zero, an unsettling dark comedy thriller from provocative Austrian filmmaker Jessica Hausner. This premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival to mixed reviews (here's ours defending it), because it is a very interesting film that dares to provoke a reaction from the audience by confronting them with freaky blind faith. Mia Wasikowska stars as Miss Novak, a young teacher who takes a job at an elite school and forms a strong bond with five students who join her group called "Club Zero", challenging them to participate in "conscious eating". Combining a pitch-black comedic sensibility with elements of body horror, Club Zero satirizes the contemporary inclinations toward myopic insularity and blind faith brought on by anxieties regarding food, consumerism and environmental catastrophe. Though I think it's digging even deeper than that getting at religion,...

There’s a new diet trend with sinister intentions, courtesy of Jessica Hausner’s latest dark comedy “Club Zero.”
The film, which premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, stars Mia Wasikowska as a nefarious teacher who encourages her students to stop eating altogether. The reason? Other than weight loss and pseudo-environmental concerns, it’s a tactic to gain new cult members.
“Club Zero” competed for the Palme d’Or at Cannes before going on to become a Best Picture nominee at both the Sitges and Munich International Film Festivals.

When Johnny Depp Earned Over $50 Million For A Brief Cameo(Photo Credit –IMDb)
Johnny Depp is known for playing quirky characters, and he even makes them iconic, be it his Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Edward Scissorhands, or Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. In the 2000s, Depp was at the peak of his career, and the makers did not hesitate to pay millions to get him for a role, especially if it was a fantasy film, even for a few minutes. This leads us to the time when he took home a staggering amount for his role in Alice in Wonderland.

Justine Triet’s acclaimed French courtroom drama Anatomy of a Fall has won best film at the 2023 European Film Awards, held Saturday evening, Dec. 9 in Berlin.
Sandra Hüller, a double nominee in the best actress category, won for her barnstorming turn in Anatomy of a Fall as a writer who may have killed her husband.
Accepting her prize, Hüller, speaking to the various conflicts raging in and around Europe at the moment, called for a moment of silence from the audience to “silently, strongly, vividly, imagine peace.”
Justine Triet took the best directing honor for Anatomy and shared the best screenplay honor with Arthur Harari for their joint script to the twisty murder mystery. A couple in real life, Triet and Harari said writing the script, which is a piercing dissection of a marriage in crisis, “put our relationship to the test but thankfully we survived.”

There was a movie you may have heard of called "Damsel" that came out in 2018. Directed by the Zellner brothers (where did they go?), the film was a chopped-and-screwed riff on the Western, what was called by some a neo-Western, that followed its titular damsel, played by Mia Wasikowska, and her would-be white knight, a blubbering fool played by Robert Pattinson, across the American Southwest. The title was a knowing wink to the subversion of its story -- the damsel in question was in fact much more capable than her rescuer, their shared adversary, and basically everyone else they encountered.
The new trailer for Millie Bobby Brown's latest venture with Netflix, also called "Damsel," seems to be doing the same thing. It's 2023! Women don't need to wait for white knights to save them. Like Brown in the first trailer for "Damsel," released today as part of Netflix's Geeked Week,...

If you were a kid or teen in the 2000s, it's likely that you watched at least one movie featuring Josh Hutcherson, and it's also likely that you had a favorite movie with him in it. Hutcherson began acting in the early 2000s and had minor roles in a variety of TV shows before making his film debut in 2003's "American Splendor." From there, Hutcherson was launched into stardom and starred in a number of popular films throughout the decade, including "Kicking & Screaming," "Zathura: A Space Adventure," and "Journey to the Center of the Earth." By the 2010s, Hutcherson took on more mature roles and arguably landed his most popular role as Peeta Mellark in "The Hunger Games," which he would reprise for the remaining three movies in the beloved film series.

Film Movement has acquired U.S. rights to Jessica Hausner’s thought-provoking dark comedy “Club Zero,” which competed at the Cannes Film Festival.
Represented in international markets by Coproduction Office, “Club Zero” stars Mia Wasikowska as an eating instructor at an elite boarding school who exerts a dangerous influence over her students. When parents become concerned, calling for the firing of the teacher, it’s already too late as students are willing to go to a point of no return.
“Cults have been and still are a crucial issue in western societies,” Hausner said. “We believe in nutrition ideas like we used to believe in God, and I’m very happy that Film Movement will be bringing ‘Club Zero’ to U.S. audiences soon. Bon Appétit!”
The film previously won accolades at Munich and Sitges, and played at Karlovy Vary, Chicago, Busan, Sarajevo, Jerusalem, Sydney and Melbourne film festivals.

A plush tearjerker about families and euthanasia, worth seeing only for the moments Sarandon is on screen. She plays Lily, who has everything a woman could ask for but also amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Als). Sarandon breathes life into a character who is physically out of gas and now wants to leave the world on a high. You can hear wariness in Lily’s voice, every time she talks to her “difficult” daughter, Anna (Mia Wasikowska). The resentment and hostility (as well as love) between Lily and Anna could fuel a whole other, better movie.

Cool air in the evenings, pumpkins on doorsteps, and Spirit of Halloween stores everywhere you look. Yes, it is the most wonderful time of the year for a certain set of us who like our weather settings left at “autumnal” and our genre of choice to be on the spooky side of things.
With that in mind, one of the most pleasurable things to do each October is curl up with a good horror movie and feel the goosebumps gather on the back of your neck. But how do you know if something is a good horror movie, exactly? You watch it for yourself, or you trust the experts, of course! For instance, the most popular streaming service in the world, Netflix, offers a cornucopia of chillers, but which are the ones that might be worth your time? Our staff has put their heads together and come up with the below list.
