While speaking with Miles Teller for Interview, the 35-year-old Venom: The Last Dance actress recalled being “devastated” when she didn’t land the titular role in the 2010 movie directed by Tim Burton.

Lewis Carroll's 1871 fable "Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There" features a notable scene wherein the young titular protagonist runs across a pair of whimsically dunderheaded identical twins while lost in an alternate dimension. The characters are named Tweedledee and Tweedledum and are based on numerous 18th-century folk poems variously attributed to John Byron, John Pope, and Jonathan Swift. In an early epigram by Byron, the two characters agree to have a battle but are startled by a crow, and forget to fight each other. It wouldn't be until the publication of "Through the Looking Glass," and John Tenniel's illustrations therein, that Tweedledee and Tweedledum would be depicted as identical twins.

Whether you love him, hate him, or land somewhere in the middle, there is no denying that Burton has a voice and that voice has become rather valuable. Guillermo del Toro recalls the moment he realised his gothic romance Crimson Peak was destined to not find its audience.

Given the incredible quality of his filmography, 2015’s Crimson Peak is sometimes viewed as a misstep for Guillermo del Toro. The dark gothic romance earned $75 million from a $57 million budget and picked up generally favourable reviews from critics. For a filmmaker who has won Oscars and produced some incredibly revered films, that does leave Crimson Peak as something as an outlier.

It should be added though that the film still very much has an audience that will tell you what a great watch it is. Film Stories is one of them, given that we put it on our list of 11 creepy and unsettling films that aren’t traditional horror movies back in 2022.

According to del Toro, that ‘s the reason why the film didn’t perform as well as he’d hoped.

Well, now we know what film Guillermo del Toro was referring to when he reflected on his movies being “hobbled” at the box office by bad studio marketing.

After del Toro tweeted that in his 30-year career, he has had “three wonderful films hampered and hobbled by misguided marketing,” it turns out that “Crimson Peak” is one of them. (The other del Toro has publicly said is his 2012 animated film “Rise of the Guardians.”)

Now, del Toro is reflecting on the legacy of his 2015 Gothic romance film “Crimson Peak” to Vulture. The feature starred Mia Wasikowska as the new bride of a mysterious, wealthy recluse (Tom Hiddleston) whose sister (Jessica Chastain) has sinister intentions. Charlie Hunnam also starred.

Del Toro admitted that the film, despite its buzzy cast, was “doomed” at the box office due to its wrongful marketing label of being a horror movie.

US filmmaker Paul Schrader will be president of the jury for the 30th Sarajevo Film Festival (August 16-23).

Schrader will preside over a five-person jury, consisting of Swedish actress and producer Noomi Rapace, Finnish filmmaker Juho Kuosmanen, Bosnian filmmaker Una Gunjak and Slovenian actor Sebastian Cavazza.

The jury will award the Heart of Sarajevo awards in the Competition Programme – Feature Film, with the winners announced on Friday, August 23. Prizes include best feature film, director, actress and actor.

Previous Sarajevo jury presidents have included Mike Leigh, Jasmila Zbanic, Asghar Farhadi, Ruben Ostlund and last year’s president Mia Wasikowska.

Wollstonecraft is best known for her work A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, published in 1792, where she argued that women are not naturally inferior to men, even if they appeared so in her time because they lacked equal access to education. Wollstonecraft believed that both men and women should be treated as rational beings and imagined a social order founded on reason. Mia Hansen-Løve, one of France’s leading filmmakers whose movies have played at Cannes, Berlin and Toronto, will next direct “If Love Should Die,” an ambitious feature film about the life of visionary English writer and philosopher Mary Wollstonecraft.

Mubi, the auteur-driven global distribution and streaming powerhouse, is producing “If Love Should Die” with Georgina Paget and Thembisa Cochrane at U.K. banner Caspian Films (“The Colour Room”); “Anatomy of a Fall” producer David Thion and Philippe Martin at Paris-set Les Films Pelléas; Norway’s Mer Film, Lorenzo Mieli for Our Films and Arte France Cinema. After receiving a record nine nominations this year at the 2024 Southern California Journalism Awards, it was announced last night at an awards dinner gala at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles that IndieWire’s Senior Social Media Manager, Veronica Flores, and Senior Social and Cultural Editor, Vincent Perella, had won Best Use of Social Media to Enhance and/or Cover a Story by a Group for their work on “How Barbie Became Real.” Judges for the category commented, “Well put together, clean editing, snappy and just right for social media. Great job!”

There’s a new diet trend with sinister intentions, courtesy of Jessica Hausner’s latest dark comedy “Club Zero.”

The film, which premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, stars Mia Wasikowska as a nefarious teacher who encourages her students to stop eating altogether. The reason? Other than weight loss and pseudo-environmental concerns, it’s a tactic to gain new cult members.

Justine Triet’s acclaimed French courtroom drama Anatomy of a Fall has won best film at the 2023 European Film Awards, held Saturday evening, Dec. 9 in Berlin.

Sandra Hüller, a double nominee in the best actress category, won for her barnstorming turn in Anatomy of a Fall as a writer who may have killed her husband.

Accepting her prize, Hüller, speaking to the various conflicts raging in and around Europe at the moment, called for a moment of silence from the audience to “silently, strongly, vividly, imagine peace.”

Justine Triet took the best directing honor for Anatomy and shared the best screenplay honor with Arthur Harari for their joint script to the twisty murder mystery. A couple in real life, Triet and Harari said writing the script, which is a piercing dissection of a marriage in crisis, “put our relationship to the test but thankfully we survived.”

Directed by the Zellner brothers (where did they go?), the film was a chopped-and-screwed riff on the Western, what was called by some a neo-Western, that followed its titular damsel, played by Mia Wasikowska, and her would-be white knight, a blubbering fool played by Robert Pattinson, across the American Southwest. Represented in international markets by Coproduction Office, “Club Zero” stars Mia Wasikowska as an eating instructor at an elite boarding school who exerts a dangerous influence over her students.
