This article is presented in partnership with Rabbit Hole.
Jay Ellis is a busy man. The “Insecure” and “Top Gun: Maverick” star is a regular at the Sundance Film Festival, but this year he only had time to pop in for a whirlwind 48 hours thanks to a schedule that includes two new shows coming out this year (Netflix’s “Running Point” and Peacock’s “All Her Fault”) and a theater gig in New York this summer. But Ellis still finds time within that packed slate to mentor the next generation of filmmakers.
Without a film playing at the festival, he was on hand to attend the IndieWire Chili Party and talk about his involvement in Rabbit Hole’s Creative Spirit Challenge. The premium spirits brand, which has long been a supporter of independent film, has launched a pitch contest in which first-time filmmakers can win the camera equipment needed to make their first short film.

American Film Institute alum Melina Matsoukas will deliver the keynote address at the AFI Directing Workshop for Women Showcase for the Class of 2024. The showcase will be held on April 10 at the Directors Guild of America in Los Angeles.
The Directing Workshop for Women Program helps to educates traditionally underrepresented filmmakers through the production cycle of a short film, providing hands-on instruction led by industry experts. The medal is awarded annually “to an alumnus of either the AFI Conservatory or the [AFI Directing Workshop for Women] who best embodies the qualities of the late director: talent, taste, dedication and commitment to quality filmmaking.” Schaffner, who died in 1989, won a best director Oscar for Patton in 1970. Cate Blanchett and Coco Francini, who are partners in Dirty Films, along with Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative have launched the Proof of Concept Accelerator Program.
Supported by Netflix, the program’s goal is to identify the next generation of filmmaking talent whose stories promote the perspectives of women, trans, and nonbinary people.
According to the latest annual report from Smith and Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, 6% of directors across 1,600 top-grossing movies were women and less than one-third of all speaking characters on screen in those movies were girls, women, trans or non-binary people. This lack of inclusion behind the camera and on screen means there are limited career opportunities for women, trans, and non-binary storytellers and those who want to bring their stories to the screen.

After a four year hiatus, the IndieWire Honors returned with a bang on Wednesday night as some of the brightest stars and most brilliant minds in film and television convened in Hollywood to celebrate creative independence.
The event was hosted by comedian and “The Blackening” star, co-writer, and producer Dewayne Perkins, who lent his signature sense of humor to the evening as he handed out awards to IndieWire’s 10 curated honorees.
Todd Haynes received the Visionary Award in celebration of his 35 year filmmaking journey that saw him go from self-distributing his short films in New York City to becoming a leading voice of New Queer Cinema to directing this year’s Cannes hit “May December.”

Bold Speeches from Auteurs and Comfy Couches: IndieWire Honors 2023 Is the Awards Show Like No Other

IndieWire Honors recognized some of the biggest movies and TV shows of the year last night, including “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Beef,” and “John Wick: Chapter 4,” but the filmmakers’ speeches reflected how their current work couldn’t exist without the support they received early in their careers — much of it from IndieWire.
Todd Haynes, director of Netflix marquee title “May December,” accepted the Visionary Award with a memory of screening his breakout short “Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story” to rave reviews before the cease-and-desists from her estate rolled in. Greta Gerwig, writer-director of Warner Bros. global blockbuster “Barbie” and recipient of the Auteur Award, recalled doing her very first interviews with Anne Thompson for her solo directorial debut “Lady Bird” at Telluride.

Jharrel Jerome in “I’m a Virgo” may play a 13-foot tall giant, but as he receives accolades for his performance during this awards season, he says it’s important to remember the “little moments” along the way. The 26-year-old star is starting to dream both big and small.
“When you become an actor, I feel like you forget to dream of these little moments here. You dream of the big screen, you dream of the flashing lights, you dream about the big red carpets and the photos, but you forget about the intimate moments like this, when you get into a room with artists who are as passionate as you,” Jerome said upon accepting the Performance Prize at the IndieWire Honors ceremony on December 6. He added that he didn’t know what to expect stepping into NeueHouse Hollywood for the occasion. But seeing the intimate space, he said, “this is dope.

Lily Gladstone is the crown jewel of awards season so far, on her way to a likely Best Actress Oscar nomination for her performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Just last week, Gladstone earned the prestigious New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress, among many other honors already happening.
But at IndieWire Honors on December 6 in Los Angeles, Lily Gladstone added the Performance Award to those accolades for her searing turn in Martin Scorsese’s crime drama. The Montana-born actress — who is of Piegan Blackfeet, Nez Perce, and European heritage — plays the real-life Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman who played a pivotal but tragic role in exposing the systematic murder of wealthy Osage by white opportunists in 1920s Oklahoma.
Yet instead of only touting her acclaimed role in the Apple Original Films feature — her studio debut — she took to the IndieWire Honors stage to champion her indie film “Fancy Dance,...

Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie are the heads behind Showtime and A24’s mind-bending reality TV satire “The Curse,” currently heading into its fifth episode on December 10. But just a few days prior, the creative duo received the Wavelength Award at the IndieWire Honors event at NeueHouse Hollywood on December 6, hosted by Dewayne Perkins.
At the event, they were in characteristic improvisatory, slightly off-kilter (and off-putting) style, with “The Rehearsal” creator Fielder starting off his acceptance speech, in deadpan droll, “It’s very nice. Melina Matsoukas has already produced a body of impressive work before she even made the jump to scripted fiction, via her Grammy-winning music video work for massive stars like Rihanna and Beyoncé. And 2019’s “Queen & Slim,” as well as her work on TV shows like “Insecure” and “Master of None,” affirmed her talents as a visual stylist. This year, on the pilot of Apple TV+ series “The Changeling,” Matsoukas applied her gifts to a completely new aim: making a fairy tale.
For her work on the series, Matsoukas received the Auteur Award from IndieWire Honors, alongside “The Changeling” creator Kelly Marcel. Matsoukas appeared at the Los Angeles ceremony to accept the award on her and Marcel’s behalf. Cord Jefferson would love to stay and chat with his icons, but he’s in the midst of a long awards season and has to “talk to some strangers” about his debut feature “American Fiction.”
So upon accepting the Breakthrough Award at the IndieWire Honors ceremony on December 6 at NeueHouse Hollywood, he said he’s ducking out early not because he’s a “snob,” but because he cares deeply about his work and he wants to make sure he can keep meeting people he admires.
“I’m an artist, so I’m sensitive about my shit. That is 100 percent true. I am deeply insecure,” Jefferson said, quoting the singer Erykah Badu. “I’ve never directed anything before I made this movie, I’ve never written a movie before I made this movie. Kelly Marcel, who believes in signs from the universe and sees magic everywhere, was at home with her six-month-old baby when “The Changeling” appeared at the door.
“The book landed, I read it, and I was horrified,” the showrunner said, laughing as she recalled her overly intense introduction to Victor Lavalle’s dark fantasy novel from 2017.
“I was at home with a new baby, and I was experiencing all of that crazy stuff that you go through as a new mom, whilst reading this horrifying book about parenting! Ultimately, it’s very hopeful and incredibly beautiful, but it was also scary and felt very real to me as well.”

[This story contains spoilers from episode seven of The Changeling.]
In “Stormy Weather,” the penultimate episode of The Changeling, all the flashbacks of Apollo’s (Lakeith Stanfield) childhood and the early days of his mother’s relationship with his father Brian (Jared Abrahamson) that have been sprinkled throughout the season bring viewers to the Elk Hotel in Times Square, a seedy location steeped in even darker memories. It’s there that Lillian Kagwa (Adina Porter) recounts the deal she made decades prior, which sets in motion the turmoil her son is now enduring as a father.
Through a series of monologues, a vocal performance and musings on faith, motherhood and identity that unfold like a secret stage play only select audiences have privy to, Lillian reveals the totality of the incident that forced her to emigrate from Uganda to the United States, and the chilling threats Brian nearly made good on one day that forced her to kill...

Director Jonathan van Tulleken is proud of the negative reviews of Apple TV+ series The Changeling because they show that the show aims to be ambitious and different. The Changeling has received a mixed response, with some critics praising the performances and others criticizing the pacing and unresolved mystery. The weirder the horror, the more divided the reviews will be, but for curious viewers who are willing to go on the journey, The Changeling might be worth watching.
Jonathan van Tulleken, a director of the new Apple TV+ series The Changeling, gives his honest take on the show's negative and generally divided response. Apple TV+ is launching the genre-blending The Changeling on September 8, 2023 with the release of the first three episodes. Oscar nominee Lakeith Stanfield leads the cast of what the streaming service describes as a fairytale for grown-ups, a horror story, and a parenthood fable.
Joining Stanfield (“Apollo Kagwa”) in the eight-episode series are Clark Backo (“Emmy”), Adina Porter (“Lillian Kagwa”), Samuel T. Herring (“William Wheeler”), Alexis Louder (“young Lillian”), and Jared Abrahamson (“Brian West”). Malcolm Barrett (“Patrice”) is featured as a special guest star.
Just ahead of its premiere, the drama based on Victor Lavalle’s bestselling novel sits at 75% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Huff Post’s Candice Frederick says “The Changeling is an extravagant genre offering about… well, many different things. Most profoundly, it’s about the natural horrors of life and death — as well as the stories we tell ourselves and those we love.”

Summer’s almost over, which means the start of the traditional TV season. And while the ongoing Hollywood double strike delayed production for scripted originals across the industry, there’s still an avalanche of new and returning shows coming to broadcast, cable and streaming services this fall.
While we’ll have to wait longer for the return of broadcast staples like the “One Chicago” franchise, “Young Sheldon” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” networks are planning to lean on banked originals (like NBC’s “Found” and “The Irrational”), unscripted staples like NBC’s “The Voice” (with new judge Reba McEntire) and “Dancing With the Stars” returning to ABC, international acquisitions (“Sullivan’s Crossing” on The CW) and even borrowing buzzworthy shows from sibling cable networks (“Yellowstone” airing on CBS). Programming on cable and streaming services has not been as impacted by the production stoppage yet, with plenty of comedy (Paramount+’s “Frasier” reboot), drama...

For the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, USC’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative has released its signature comprehensive report on the diversity of movies in front of and behind the camera.
Analyzing the 100 highest-grossing movies at the box office each year since 2007, AI2’s sample size has now reached 1,600 titles and 69,858 speaking characters. Over 16 years, the researchers found little change in the percentage of characters from nonwhite groups of every race and ethnicity except one: Asians represented 15.9 percent of characters in 2022’s top movies – up from 3.4 percent in 2007 (over a decade before Crazy Rich Asians ushered in an unprecedented era of visibility). But overall, nonwhite characters remained slightly underrepresented onscreen, with a 38.3 percent share compared to 41.1 percent of the U.S. population in real life. In 2007, 13 of the top 100 movies featured a lead or co-lead of color. Last year the tally was 31, slightly down from the 16-year high of 37 films the year prior.

Sometimes, you really should be careful what you wish for. Bookshelves all across the world are full of fairytales that have warned countless children about the dangers of sticking their nose in places they don't belong and messing with powers far beyond their understanding, but these stories typically contort themselves to wrap things up with a happy ending. But what about when adults are the ones in need of a little lesson of their own? The original Grimms' Fairy Tales took a much darker and more disturbing approach, melding fantasy with outright horror to get their point across. Well, welcome to the much more modern take on fairytales for grownups.

A few weeks ago, we heard that the Apple TV+ series The Changeling – which is not a remake of the 1980 Peter Medak horror film of the same name (which you can watch at This Link), but rather an adaptation of author Victor Lavalle’s recent novel (and you can buy a copy of Lavalle’s novel Here) – is set to premiere on Friday, September 8th. With that date now exactly one month away, a trailer for The Changeling has arrived online, and you can watch it in the embed above.

People disappear, witches are real and there are portals that have never been traveled through before in Apple TV+’s “The Changeling,” a new drama series starring Lakeith Stanfield based on the book by Victor Lavalle.
What starts off as a “boy meets girl” story ends up playing out as a terrifying nightmare. A little over 30 seconds into the trailer, Clarke Backo’s character Emma meets what appears to be a witch next a body of water in Brazil.
“She told me I had three wishes,” Emma said “When it falls off my wrist, those three wishes will come true. Do not cut it.”
But for Apollo Kagway, Lakeith Stanfield’s character, wishes and witches are only found in fairytales.
“Emma, with me…all three of your wishes will come true,” Apollo said before snapping off the red string from Emma’s wrist.
“Would you even know if you crossed into a fairytale?...

A couple years have passed since we heard that Lakeith Stanfield of Get Out and upcoming Haunted Mansion had signed on to star in the Apple TV+ series The Changeling – which is not a remake of the 1980 Peter Medak horror film of the same name (which you can watch at This Link), but rather an adaptation of author Victor Lavalle’s recent novel. (Buy a copy of Lavalle’s novel Here.) Now Apple TV+ has announced (via Deadline) that The Changeling will premiere on Friday, September 8th… and along with that announcement, they have also unveiled a batch of first look images, which you can check out at the bottom of this article.
Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage screenwriter Kelly Marcel (who is now directing Venom 3) wrote the adaptation of Lavalle’s story and served as showrunner, while Queen & Slim‘s Melina Matsoukas directed the pilot episode.

The promotion of Donna Langley, the head of the Universal film studio, to chief content officer overseeing all of NBCUniversal’s entertainment divisions, is Comcast President Mike Cavanagh’s first big decision in his tenure running the media business directly. It’s a savvy move to advance a quietly accomplished leader while other major studios are struggling, many insiders told TheWrap.
“In a time when these studios are a mess, it’s a safe move,” a producer told TheWrap about promoting Langley, referring to the box office woes and internal challenges at rivals like Bob Iger’s Walt Disney Company and David Zaslav’s Warner Bros. Discovery.
“It seemed inevitable,” one top talent agent told TheWrap. “There were rumors for a while that she wanted more responsibility and to move further up the Comcast hierarchy.”
True or not, Langley’s tenure has been marked by a lack of public drama...

Chef Alisa Reynolds was on the brink of losing her prized My 2 Cents restaurant when she was struck with an idea that would take her career worldwide.
On her eight-episode unscripted Hulu series “Searching for Soul Food,” which dropped on June 2, the Los Angeles-based Reynolds travels the world, shining a light on marginalized cultures as she dines on native cuisines. Hailing from Onyx Collective, the series pushes Reynolds — whose food has been enjoyed by renowned figures such as Barack Obama, Lena Waithe, A$AP Rocky, among others — into the TV space as one of the few Black women to host their own show in the travel and food genres.
Her international journey takes Reynolds through Mississippi, Oklahoma, Appalachia, South Africa, Italy, Jamaica, Peru and Los Angeles, as she connects people from all walks of life and varied backgrounds through one commonality: good meals.
