Studiocanal launched a brand new official podcast – and the host might just be familiar to Film Stories listeners.
This is a bit of an odd story for me to write. Basically, well, because I’m in it. I’ll see how I get on.
The rather fine folks at Studiocanal have launched an official podcast, digging into the huge archive of movies under its stewardship. It’s arriving regularly, and as well as focusing on a movie of the month, there’s a broader exploration of other bits and bobs too.
Don’t take our word for it. Here’s Jamie McHale, the head of theatrical marketing at the studio: “We’re thrilled to be launching an official podcast to celebrate our incredible library of titles and upcoming theatrical releases. The in-depth analysis and regular features such as “Dream Double Bills” and “Hidden Gems” from Simon and his guests are...

In the ’70s and early ’80s, perhaps the only thing that Stephen King liked more than a child with a psychic gift/curse was an inanimate object that becomes possessed by evil. A car, HGVs and even a laundry press lurched into life to wreak destruction, and all of these mechanical menaces made their inexorable way from page to screen, directed by John Carpenter (Christine), King himself and Tobe Hooper (The Mangler).
The Monkey, first published by Gallery magazine in 1980 and revised to feature in King’s 1985 collection of short stories Skeleton Crew, located genuine revulsion and terror in a wind-up toy. Eyes shining with “idiot glee” and lips pulled back in a “carnivorous” grin, the hirsute curio shuddered to life to clap its cymbals… and Death danced. The monkey was, in short, evil incarnate.
The main sustenance is course after course of ketchup-covered set-pieces...
So who better to adapt...

Universal and Blumhouse’s “Wolf Man” howls into theaters on Friday.
Co-written and directed by Leigh Whannell, who also made 2020’s update of “The Invisible Man,” this “Wolf Man” follows a young family, who encounter something horrifying in the woods and attempt to survive the night.
But is “Wolf Man” part of a larger cinematic universe? Let’s break it down.
Is “Wolf Man” part of a Universal Monsters universe?
It is not. At least not in the way that you’re imagining.
What does that mean?
A few years ago, Universal got very ambitious about what they referred to as the Dark Universe – a series of interconnected movies, much like Marvel Studios’ Marvel Cinematic Universe, that would feature Universal’s line-up of big screen beasts.
The first movie out of the gate was 2017’s “The Mummy,” a very expensive action movie starring Tom Cruise that underperformed at the box office.

The “Evil Dead” movies have been the brainchild of Sam Raimi, who was very much inspired by the works of Hp Lovecraft and the mythology of the “Necronomicon.” The Necronomicon is usually a fictional grimoire appearing in Lovecraft’s horror tales. In the Evil Dead movies, the “Necronomicon Ex-Mortis” is the fictional grimoire usually playing havoc upon a group of unsuspecting inhabitants who chance upon the book (usually in a cabin in the woods) and attempt to read it, causing chaos.
Practical effects usually characterize the “Evil Dead” movies, with ample amounts of gore and a blend of horror and dark comedy, at least in terms of the original trilogy that Raimi directed. The newer versions skew more towards a dark, horror bent, but the gore remains consistent. Also consistent is the protagonist, Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell), who appears in all five films as well as the television series.

Tom Cruise’s 2017 reboot of The Mummy franchise may be remembered as a critical and commercial misstep, but the movie also became an internet sensation due to an unexpected behind-the-scenes blunder. A version of the movie’s trailer was shared with half the music and sound effects missing ahead of its release.

Stripped of its cinematic polish, the trailer was unintentionally awkward and hilarious and soon became a topic of conversation. It drew unwanted attention to the film, turning the unintentional mistake into a brief moment of accidental genius in viral marketing.

Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin will helm a new Mummy film slated for release in 2026, here are the details.
The Mummy was, of course, part of the stable of classic movie monsters at Universal in the 1930s, which also included Dracula, Frankenstein and The Wolfman. Incidentally Gods And Monsters, the biopic of Frankenstein director James Whale starring Ian McKellen and Brendan Fraser, is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video and is well worth watching.
Fraser headlined the 1990s/early 2000s trilogy of Mummy films, alongside Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo and, in The Mummy Returns, Dwayne Johnson, who went on to star in spin-off The Scorpion King, which also lived on through a plethora of straight to DVD sequels. There were plans for a fourth Fraser Mummy film but, for various reasons, it never happened – we wrote about it here.
However, in the wake of Fraser’s Oscar win for The Whale,...

A new image from Wolf Man offers a closer look at Christopher Abbott's character. In the Blumhouse horror reboot, Abbott plays Blake, who inherits his estranged father's farmhouse, which becomes the site of a terrifying ordeal when he is attacked by a vicious animal. This kicks off a lycanthropic transformation that puts his wife Charlotte (Julia Garner) and daughter Ginger (Matilda Firth) at risk, trapped between the animal outside and the threat that Blake now poses. The upcoming Wolf Man was directed and co-written by Leigh Whannell, who previously helmed Blumhouse's 2020 Universal Monster remake The Invisible Man.
ScreenRant can now share an exclusive new image from Wolf Man. It depicts a disheveled, sweaty, and distressed Blake looking over his shoulder at Charlotte while mid-transformation. In addition to bulging veins...

The Mummy series has certainly seen highs and great falls. Where Brendan Fraser’s films were a cultural masterpiece and an iconic part of Hollywood, a lot has changed for the franchise since then. Tom Cruise’s film has been regarded as one of the worst attempts at a reboot, completely losing sight of what made Fraser’s films work.

Since it has been recently announced that a new reboot for the franchise is on its way, with Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin directing it, there are a lot of lessons that he can learn from the failure of Cruise’s film.

The Mummy is on the cusp of another resurrection, and this time, it’s got a new boss in charge: Lee Cronin. Fresh off the horror rollercoaster of Evil Dead Rise, the director is now stepping into the dusty old shoes of an ancient curse, hoping to give the mummified franchise a much-needed jolt of life. After years of reboots, remakes, and re-whatevers, the classic terror is crawling back to theaters, with a release date set for April 17, 2026.

Let’s face it, after Tom Cruise’s The Mummy debacle in 2017, where the only thing resurrected was our collective disappointment, the door to the Mummy universe creaked open again—though it might have just been the sound of a sarcophagus falling apart. So, Cronin’s got his work cut out for him.

The Mummy franchise has long been a fan-favorite one, even though some of its installments may not have been that well-received by fans. Since 1999, the film series under Stephen Sommers has been doing everything in its power to leave fans absolutely baffled and captivated to the core. Then there was Tom Cruise’s titular film from 2017, which, well, wasn’t all that loved by viewers.

However, even after the release of so many installments, with some of them being critical blockbusters while others cease to grab the opportunities perfectly, a new installment from the saga is currently in the works. And this one might as well make one really major Brendan Fraser-Tom Cruise scenario a reality by bringing back both actors to the fan-favorite franchise.

Universal’s always doing something with their Monsters. Lately they’ve been a bit more bold in how they spin them, retooling the Invisible Man into a sociopathic ex and giving us Dracula’s daughter hunting down a gang of unwitting thieves. Now they’re planning to revive The Mummy — yes, again — and this time, it will be even More dour than the joyless 2017 Tom Cruise picture. The chosen director is Lee Cronin. Since Cronin was previously behind Evil Dead Rise, a film that turned a horror-comedy franchise into just horror, you might be expecting something similar. You’d be right. “This will be unlike any Mummy movie you ever laid eyeballs on before,” Cronin said to The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m digging deep into the earth to raise something very ancient and very frightening.” So to those who want a “scary” Mummy movie, you may just get it. Well, it is Christmas time, so it makes sense that Blumhouse would give us a lovely gift to unwrap – a new The Mummy movie! After several big-screen iterations, including 1932’s version with Boris Karloff, the cult-classic Brendan Fraser-fronted adventure movies, and the slightly more ill-fated, Tom Cruise-starring, supposed Dark Universe-starting 2017 take, Universal’s mummified monster is back. At the helm will be writer and director Lee Cronin, the man behind 2023’s excellent Evil Dead Rise.

Back in June, it was announced that Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin had signed on to write and direct a new genre project for Atomic Monster, Blumhouse Productions, and New Line Cinema… and now we know what that mysterious project is. The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Cronin has come up with a new take on the concept of The Mummy! Cronin confirmed, “This will be unlike any Mummy movie you ever laid eyeballs on before. It should be noted that, since the project is set up at New Line Cinema, this “new take on the horror trope revolving around the ancient mummified undead” has nothing to do with the classic Universal horror property. We heard back in May that there are three...

The next classic monster to get the Blumhouse treatment is The Mummy, with “Evil Dead Rise” filmmaker Lee Cronin set to tackle the iconic character. “The Mummy” will be released on April 17, 2026 by New Line Cinema, but no other details are known.
The Irish-born Cronin most recently directed 2023’s successful horror follow-up “Evil Dead Rise,” a hit for Warner Bros. and New Line on a small budget. His feature debut was the 2019 indie “The Hole in the Ground.”
This new “Mummy” follows Blumhouse’s successful “Invisible Man” redo from Leigh Whannell that was released in 2020 and “Wolf Man,” also from Whannell, which will be released in January. Both of those films took a more scaled down approach to the monsters than previous takes, with “Invisible Man” serving as a horrifying depiction of domestic abuse starring Elisabeth Moss. “Wolf Man,” starring Christopher Abbott, similarly looks smaller scale but still heavy on frights.

A little over seven years after the last attempt to reboot the property failed, Blumhouse have revealed they're working on a new Mummy movie. The horror franchise first launched in 1932 and was part of the Universal Classic Monsters collection, with Boris Karloff portraying the titular entity before passing the reins on to Tom Tyler, Lon Chaney Jr. and Eddie Parker. The years since have seen two rebooted versions of The Mummy franchise, beginning with the Brendan Fraser-led movies from Stephen Sommers, which also included the Scorpion King spinoffs, and Tom Cruise's failed 2017 reboot meant to launch the interconnected Dark Universe.
The official Blumhouse Twitter page have unveiled that a new Mummy movie is in the works from writer/director Lee Cronin, who recently excelled with Evil Dead Rise. The post features a script page with the title scratched out featuring Cronin's credit with "Original Screenplay by" and both...

The Mummy is being unwrapped from the dead once again.
Lee Cronin is writing and directing a new take on the horror trope revolving around the ancient mummified undead for New Line, The Hollywood Reporter can reveal.
The project was previously only known as a Cronin mystery movie that had been announced earlier this year and is now set for an April 17, 2026 release.
Horror powerhouses Atomic Monster and Blumhouse, along with Cronin’s banner Doppelgängers, are producing.
Plot details are being kept in the sarcophagus but Cronin is hoping to breathe modern life into ageless evil.
“This will be unlike any Mummy movie you ever laid eyeballs on before,” he said in a statement to THR. “I’m digging deep into the earth to raise something very ancient and very frightening,”
The news was confirmed with post on Blumhouse’s Instagram account.
Atomic Monster and Blumhouse are co-financing the film.

Director Lee Cronin's recent Evil Dead Rise proved to be a big success for Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert’s Ghost House Pictures (grossing $147 million against its $15-19 million budget), so it was inevitable that another instalment in the iconic horror franchise would enter development sooner rather than later.
Back in February, we got word that Vermin director Sébastien Vaniček had been enlisted to co-write and helm the then untitled project, which was described as a spin-off. This indicated that the movie would not be a direct sequel to Rise, but all plot details are still under wraps for the time being.
Now, Vaniček has taken to Instagram to announce that the movie is officially titled Evil Dead Burn, and will be released at some point in 2026.

Evil Dead fans have plenty to look forward to in the coming years as the franchise based on Sam Raimi's original 1981 film continues to evolve.
French director Sébastien Vaniček recently shared an exciting update on the next planned movie in the franchise, which we now know will be titled Evil Dead Burn. The director shared a photo of the screenplay's title page via his social media account, teasing the next chapter. He and Florent Bernard co-wrote the script.
Previously, Lee Cronin wrote and directed the smash hit 2023 movie Evil Dead Rise, starring Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan as sisters who must combat the Deadites after their kids mistakenly summon them via the infamous Necronomicon, unaware of what the book really entails.

The next Evil Dead film is now officially called Evil Dead Burn, and it’s heading our way in 2026.
The impressive success in cinemas – and on home formats – of last year’s Evil Dead Rise didn’t just resurrect the Evil Dead cinematic franchise, it made a further film a certainty.
And here comes the confirmation of it.
Evil Dead Burn is set to be the next chapter in the saga, and once again we have a new director stepping in to make it. French director Sebastien Vanicek has landed the job, having made his feature directorial debut with the movie Infested. Vanicek has also co-written the script for the new film along with Florent Bernard.
News of the new film was confirmed by the pair on their Instagram accounts, where they posted a picture of the screenplay’s cover. Fittingly, it looked like it’d been typed with a rickety old typewriter.

Exclusive: Walden Media has snapped up the life rights of Brian Schwartz, an advertising exec turned lawn care philanthropist known as “The Lawn Ranger,” for the development of a dramatic feature titled Grassroots.
Based on Schwartz’s true story, the film will explore his journey from corporate executive to a beacon of hope, as he selflessly mowed lawns for seniors, veterans, and the disabled during the Covid-19 pandemic and started a national movement. The horror genre is currently thriving and showing no signs of slowing down, which can only be a good thing for gore-hounds the world over. 2024 has already seen iconic performances such as in the unnerving Nicolas Cage horror movie Longlegs, plus Demi Moore in one of the most superb body horror movies ever to have been unleashed; The Substance. However, some of the very best movies from the horror genre over the last 10 or so years have come from a previously unlikely source; Ireland.

The latest installment in the popular Evil Dead horror franchise, Evil Dead Rise, set a new standard for practical effects by utilizing over 1,700 gallons of fake blood throughout filming. Directed by Lee Cronin, the movie relies heavily on realistic gore to deliver frights, especially in its infamous extended elevator scene containing roughly 1,585 gallons alone.
While short of the 50,000 gallons reportedly used in a single scene for the 2013 reboot, Evil Dead Rise still represented a major commitment to practical effects. An industrial kitchen was needed to produce the massive amounts of fake blood demanded by the production. According to Cronin, capturing the elevator sequence in an uncut take was an impressive feat that could not have been accomplished with computer-generated effects.

Deadite Ellies creepy dream monologue in her terrifying first scene in Evil Dead Rise slyly foreshadows the characters twisted ending. Released to critical and commercial success in 2023, Evil Dead Rise brought the gory terror of Sam Raimis classic horror comedy franchise out of the woods and into a dilapidated apartment complex in Los Angeles. Like the previous movies in the Evil Dead franchise, Evil Dead Rise has generous amounts of blood or perhaps a bit too generous, as it has one scene that went above and beyond with blood. A decade after Fede lvarezs reimagining simply titled Evil Dead, the franchise was brought back to life with a new installment, unrelated to Alvarezs movie and Sam Raimis trilogy. Directed by Lee Cronin, Evil Dead Rise left Ash Williams behind and introduced a new version of the Necronomicon and new main characters who had to fight against the evil force unleashed by it.

Evil Dead Rise brought the Evil Dead franchise back to life, and though its a standalone sequel, it has some clever references to characters from Sam Raimi and Fede Alvarezs movies. Almost every human in the apartment building that acts as the setting forEvil Dead Rise are killed by Deadites, but many viewers are wondering if someone else died: the cat. The following contains spoilers for Evil Dead RiseEvil Dead Rise is filled with clever little Easter eggs, references, and hidden details connecting it to the larger Evil Dead franchise (and beyond). Directed and written by Lee Cronin, Evil Dead Rise is the fifth movie in Sam Raimis Evil Dead series, which debuted in 1981 and helped Raimi as a filmmaker. The franchise has grown from a gonzo cult classic to an acclaimed institution, even as it's left the former protagonist Ash Williams for new faces. For example, the characters in Evil Dead Rise are almost entirely disconnected from previous protagonists.
Cronin found ways to bring the Necronomicon and the Deadites into an entirely new setting but found creative ways to expand the lore of the franchise and reference previous entries in the series. As Beth and her family encounter the Deadites, there are classic lines, subtle references, and deliberate recreations of moments from prior films.

Theatrical experiences are essential, but there's also something to be said for getting the pants scared off you in your own home. Netflix watchers seem to agree, as they've been flocking to "Evil Dead Rise" en masse since it hit the streamer just two days ago, according to FlixPatrol.
