Were it not for a failed plan to continue the story of Godzilla vs. Hedorah, the Monsterverse may have never formed. Directed by Yoshimitsu Banno, Godzilla vs. Hedorah is best remembered for its introduction of the titular Smoke Monster, who joined a growing list of powerful Godzilla villains. In the 1971 film, the King of the Monsters found himself in a heated battle with Hedorah, a blob-shaped kaiju who came from outer space to feed on the Earth's heavily polluted ecosystem.
Despite all the trouble he gave Godzilla in the movie, Hedorah was put on the backburner for quite some time, with Toho favoring other villains - such as Mechagodzilla and Ghidorah - in the films that followed. Hedorah didn't make a return to the franchise until Godzilla: Final Wars, a film that reunited Godzilla with a slew of his old allies and enemies. Years after Hedorah's cameo, Yoshimitsu Banno tried to bring him back again,...

Legendary Entertainment is making a big strategic move, buying out Dalian Wanda Group’s stake in the company.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Legendary CEO Josh Grode framed the deal as being a “right place, right time” situation.
“Wanda was looking for some liquidity in some of its investments. And we are coming off a great first part of the year, we had a very strong 2023, so we have significant excess liquidity on our balance sheet,” Grode says. “After six months or so of talking about it, we were able to reach terms that we thought were good, and the transaction winds up being very accretive to both management and Apollo, which, after the transaction is over, we will own the business roughly equally.”
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the company said that it financed the buyout “via cash on its balance sheet without outside financing,...

Embark on a thrilling expedition with Kong: Skull Island, a 2017 cinematic juggernaut that not only revitalizes the mythos of the legendary King Kong but also introduces us to a kaleidoscopic ensemble cast featuring Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, and the indomitable Samuel L. Jackson.

Helmed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, this reimagined origin story propels us onto an untamed Pacific island that’s as treacherous as it is magnificent. The visceral energy of the film carried us away, arousing the same feelings of awe and fear that only splendid visual storytelling can. No surprise then that the movie snagged a Best Visual Effects nomination at the Academy Awards.
With the world still talking about the film, speculation that the Loki star could be the burgeoning MonsterVerse’s Robert Downey Jr. has reached fever pitch.

More Godzilla and King Kong are coming to Max. “Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire” will be available to stream from home on Max starting July 4. The film was a box office hit earlier this year with $196 million at the domestic box office and $567 million worldwide.
Following the events of 2021’s “Godzilla vs. Kong,” the new film finds the two iconic monsters putting aside their differences and living peacefully — with King Kong residing in the Hollow Earth alone and Godzilla fighting destructive monsters and napping in Rome’s Colosseum. However, that balance is disrupted when Kong, longing for fellow gigantic friends, discovers a violent clan of massive apes hiding out in Hollow Earth. Led by the ruthless Scar King, the apes attack Earth, and the only creatures who can stop them are Godzilla and Kong.

Have you ever meditated on the ‘what-ifs’ of casting decisions that could’ve reshaped our beloved characters? Zack Snyder had a very valid reason for casting Henry Cavill over an actor who might have just been on the cusp of donning the iconic red cape: Joe Manganiello. The latter played Deathstroke in the Dceu.
It is exciting to peel back the layers of Snyder’s Man of Steel, a film that sparked debate over its tone and portrayal of Krypton’s last son. While the director’s vision faced scrutiny for allegedly missing Superman’s quintessential hopefulness, he himself pointed to a nuanced perspective on his protagonist’s innate “innocence”, a characteristic he found in Cavill.

The so-called "MonsterVerse" is nowadays as silly as the original Toho "Godzilla" sequels became. The franchise's first entry, 2014's divisive but successful "Godzilla," looks downright anomalous. Directed with impeccable scale and craftsmanship by Gareth Edwards, the film exercises careful restraint, escalating the spectacle to make it more satisfying. The palette is made from smog and fire, i.e. what Godzilla and his monster adversaries (the MUTOs) leave in their wake. As star Elizabeth Olsen noted, the film is cut from the cloth of the original 1954 "Godzilla," where the eponymous monster is an allegory for nuclear destruction and natural disasters.
2014's "Godzilla" isn't perfect. It has a so-so script and Aaron Taylor-Johnson feels out of his depth as the lead (even if "The Fall Guy" proved he can be a movie star). Compared to the other MonsterVerse movies, though, it looks like "Jaws."
When Edwards' "Godzilla" went into production, the franchise was in a bad place.

Two producers who attempted to make a biopic about Roberto Clemente are now suing the baseball legend’s sons, alleging that the family twice sold the rights to Clemente’s life story.
Producers Jonah Hirsch and Angel Munoz announced plans in March 2023 to adapt the family-written biography, “Clemente: The True Legacy of an Undying Hero,” into a feature film. But after the announcement, the pair discovered that Thomas Tull, the former CEO of Legendary Pictures, was developing his own Clemente feature.
Legendary, which produced “42,” starring Chadwick Boseman as Jackie Robinson, had optioned Clemente’s life rights in 2015, intending to produce a film based on the David Maraniss biography “Clemente: The Passion and Grace of Baseball’s Last Hero.”
According to the suit, the Clemente family initially claimed that Legendary had failed to make a payment, causing the life rights to revert back to the family. But that turned out to be untrue,...

A lawsuit has been filed against the sons of baseball legend Roberto Clemente, who allegedly defrauded an indie production company by selling it the rights to a biopic of their father despite Legendary Pictures having already optioned the film.
That production banner, Inside the Park, in a complaint filed on Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, says it developed the movie for over two years only for it to fall apart after learning that the endeavor was solely meant to “generate renewed interest and publicity” in the hall-of-famer for another project.

Updated, with comment from Cmg: Baseball legend Roberto Clemente is at the center of a new lawsuit over the rights to his life story.
More than 50 years after his death, the Pittsburgh Pirates icon generated renewed interest in the entertainment industry. But a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court claims that two of Clemente’s family members and their agent, Cmg, sold off rights to his story even though another production entity held an option to it.
Read the Roberto Clemente lawsuit.
The plaintiff, Inside the Park LLC, contends that early last year, they were granted “an exclusive and irrevocable option to purchase the rights in and to the creation, production and distribution of a feature film based generally on the life of the late Roberto Clemente and the book Clemente – The True Legacy of an Undying Hero.”

"This isn't art. It isn't even great trash. It's a con game, and we bear the claw marks." That's what critic Rita Kempley wrote for the Washington Post in a particularly scathing review of Roland Emmerich's 1998 movie, "Godzilla." It was the first attempt by Hollywood to bring the classic monster to life in America, and it was a spectacular failure. That's what Warner Bros., Legendary, and director Gareth Edwards were working against while crafting 2014's "Godzilla." Skepticism was built in. They had to prove that a film within this franchise made outside of Japan could work.
They did that and then some.

It didn’t happen at Universal’s presentation, but we finally got a Christopher Nolan announcement at CinemaCon 2024.
On Thursday morning, Paramount Pictures’ President of Domestic Distribution Chris Aronson revealed that Nolan’s “Interstellar” will return to theaters on September 27, 2024 in both 70mm and IMAX formats. The re-release is a celebration of the film’s 10-year anniversary. It is probably also — at least somewhat — a continued celebration of Nolan’s Best Picture-winner “Oppenheimer.”
Of course, the “Oppenheimer” victory isn’t for Paramount to tout, and its studio Universal took a brief victory lap (or two) during its own Wednesday afternoon Colosseum presentation. The on-stage champagne-popping split time with “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and included a prerecorded message from Nolan. (He did not touch on “Mario.”)
In the package played for a packed house of (mostly) exhibitors, Nolan said he had been “very nervous” about showing “Oppenheimer” footage to the same CinemaCon audience last year.

In the package played for a packed house of (mostly) exhibitors, Nolan said he had been “very nervous” about showing “Oppenheimer” footage to the same CinemaCon audience last year.

Who’s ready for a Sandworm ride? The long-awaited (and delayed) sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s Dune is getting spicy in theaters, and we want to know what you think about the film! Anticipation for Dune: Part Two has been through the roof since last year, and then the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes hit Hollywood. Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. Film Group agreed to delay the film until 2024, knowing that a robust promotional campaign for the science-fiction epic would serve the project (and the box office) well.
The delay is paying off as Dune: Part Two already took $12 million home from preview screenings. The film debuted in 4,500 locations, with Imax screenings bringing in 38% of the pot. I’ve got tickets for an 11:30 screening at my local theater tomorrow, joining the crowds already rushing to theaters to experience one of 2024’s most anticipated features. When Godzilla gets mad, he yells at stuff. Dude loves to roar. When he's not stomping on cities, smashing King Ghidorah in the face(s), or hibernating in the Pacific, everyone's favorite nuclear gorilla-whale is sounding his barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world. The accepted spelling of Godzilla's roar is "Skreeonk," a word often seen in Godzilla comics. Since the monster's inception in 1954, Godzilla has more or less retained the same roar, with the sound only undergoing remixes and aural sweetening as sound technology evolved. The Godzilla roar from 2023's "Godzilla Minus One" is not terribly far afield from the Godzilla roar heard in Ishiro Honda's "Gojira." Enterprising Godzilla fans have compiled the various Godzilla roars into tidy video montages. It's a high-pitched wail undergirded by an animalistic growl. It is distinctly Godzilla.

Colossal Biosciences, a company devoted to genetically resurrecting the woolly mammoth, is the subject of Oscar-winning director James Reed’s next documentary series for Teton Ridge Entertainment, a company backed by former Legendary CEO Thomas Tull.
Reed, who won an Academy Award in 2020 for co-directing “My Octopus Teacher,” is currently in production on the multi-year docuseries, which will follow the Dallas-based company as it uses gene-editing technology to bring back extinct species including the woolly mammoth, the thylacine (commonly referred to as the Tasmanian tiger) and the dodo bird. Reed will chronicle how Colossal, which deems itself the world’s first de-extinction company, strives to rewild the extinct animals and bring them back to their natural habitats.
Teton Ridge is financing the first phase of the docu’s production with the intention to find a distribution partner to bring the film to market.

Three-week projections for Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two are in, and the highly-anticipated sequel could ride a sandworm all the way to the bank! The follow-up to Villeneuve’s 2021 epic gives theater owners and film industry workers something to feel spicy about, with conservative predictions giving the movie a $65M+ launch. That projected total is 59%-83% higher than the original, which debuted at $41M.
Legendary/Warner Bros released Dune during the pandemic, with the science-fiction spectacle going day-and-date in theaters and on HBO Max. The simultaneous release cut into Dune’s box office totals, but fans longing for a big-screen blockbuster still showed up to theaters, making Dune the second highest-grossing day and date/HBO Max movie for Warner Media at $402M worldwide.

We’re just weeks away from the March 1st theatrical release of Dune: Part Two, the second half of director Denis Villeneuve’s two-part adaptation of the Frank Herbert novel Dune… and the whole time we’ve been gearing up to see this movie, one element of it that has been getting a lot of hype is the presence of sandworms. Cast member Javier Bardem said he wanted to ride a sandworm in the film, the actors said the production included “a main unit, a second unit, and a sandworm unit“, and there are tie-in popcorn buckets designed to look like sandworms. Now an extended sneak preview has made its way online, and it features a clip from the film where our hero Paul Atreides learns to ride a sandworm! You can check it out in the embed at the bottom of this article.

When Colossal Biosciences launched in 2021 with a splashy New York Times article stating it aimed to to resurrect the Wooly Mammoth, the company’s goals drew comparisons to entertainment properties like Jurassic Park. Now Colossal, described as the world’s first de-extinction company, is making steps to enter the entertainment space with the hire of veteran executive Emily Castel as its chief marketing officer.
In the new role, Castel will lead the company’s brand, experiences, consumer products and emerging media, which would include entertainment content.
Castel has close ties with Thomas Tull, the Legendary Entertainment founder who is among the backers of Colossal. She served as chief marketing officer at Legendary from 2013-17, working with the studio’s distribution partners Warner Bros. and Universal on titles such as Pacific Rim, Godzilla, Jurassic World, Warcraft and Kong: Skull Island. Dune: Part Two, the second half of director Denis Villeneuve’s two-part adaptation of the Frank Herbert novel Dune, is now scheduled to be released on March 1st – but there are five more Herbert Dune novels that could serve as the basis for future films, and Villeneuve and his Dune stars Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya have all expressed interest in continuing the franchise. In an interview with Total Film magazine, Villeneuve said the ending of Dune: Part Two will set up the events of a third Dune film… if they get the chance to make it. He told Total Film, “All of the elements are there. But I think the movie adaptation is more tragic than the book. The way that Part Two ends… it would create a total balance and equilibrium to finish Paul’s storyline in what we could say in Part Three.“
Chalamet told Total Film, “The idea excites me very much.

Warner Bros has pulled Bong Joon-ho’s anticipated sci-fi pic Mickey 17 from its release calendar, bumping up Adam Wingard’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire from April 12th to March 29th, 2024, when it will debut in IMAX.
We’re told that the Mickey 17 move was due to shifts in production amidst last year’s strikes, and that a new date will be coming relatively soon. Godzilla‘s move to the weekend previously inhabited by that title sees it set to open with very little competition, a re-release of Alice Rorhwacher’s La Chimera being the only other plan, exhibition-wise, for that frame.
Marking Director Bong’s follow-up to Oscar-winning smash Parasite, Mickey17 adapts the novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton. The book follows Mickey7, who is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever there’s a mission that’s...

We’ve got great news for Dune fans! Warner Bros says the spice will flow earlier than anticipated now that Dune: Part Two is moving up two weeks to March 1. Before the SAG-AFTRA strike ended, the highly-anticipated sequel pushed the film’s release to guarantee a massive marketing push for Denis Villeneuve’s sequel. With writers and actors returning to work, press tours include talent from the forthcoming science-fiction epic, from actors to crew members and beyond.
Dune: Part Two “will explore the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family,” says the film’s official synopsis. “Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.”

Fresh off of being delayed until 2024, Dune: Part Two is Empire Magazine‘s new cover story. The outlet will print two gorgeous Dune Part Two Empire Magazine covers for fans to collect, featuring House Atreides and Harkonnen members. Yesterday, Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. said they would push the release of Dune: Part Two, with the film now coming to theaters on March 15, 2024.
This change in release date has caused a knock-on effect. Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire was set to be released on March 15, 2024, but will now move to April 12, 2024. That is the date that The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim was supposed to be released, which will now be pushed to December 13, 2024. The reason for the Dune: Part Two delay is said to be because of the SAG-AFTRA strike, as the studio clearly wants its stars to be able to promote the movie.

A spicy rumor about the Dune film franchise is rising from the sands of Arrakis. Industry insider Daniel Richtman said that Warner Bros had signed Timothée Chalamet for Dune 3. While this is not a confirmation of production plans for another movie in Denis Villeneuve’s presentation of Dune, it’s not the first time we’ve heard rumblings that a third film is a possibility.
Previously, Dune writer Jon Spaihts confirmed a third film could happen. “There are a few tantalizing strands that lead into the future and suggest that we might not be done in this universe, despite the fact that the ending of ‘Dune’ as a novel, which will be the ending of the second film, is a very satisfying conclusion,” Spaihts told The Playlist early last year. “There are a number of ways in which the book also sounds ominous notes, and there are hints of foreboding...

Dune: Part Two, the second half of director Denis Villeneuve’s two-part adaptation of the Frank Herbert novel Dune, has a release date of November 3rd – and in this build-up to the film’s release, we’ve previously only heard that Villeneuve wrote the screenplay with Jon Spaihts, who he also collaborated with on the script for Dune: Part One. (Their Part One co-writer Eric Roth decided not to work on the follow-up.) Now, The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin has revealed that he was also a “participating writer” on Dune: Part Two!
Speaking with The Playlist, Mazin said that he’s basically out of the movie business, because he’s focusing on The Last of Us and his other TV work. But “I will work with certain directors when they call because I love them and because they’re so brilliant. So if, like, Denis Villeneuve calls, then absolutely.
