Legendary Entertainment is making a big strategic move, buying out Dalian Wanda Group’s stake in the company.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Legendary CEO Josh Grode framed the deal as being a “right place, right time” situation.

“Wanda was looking for some liquidity in some of its investments. And we are coming off a great first part of the year, we had a very strong 2023, so we have significant excess liquidity on our balance sheet,” Grode says. “After six months or so of talking about it, we were able to reach terms that we thought were good, and the transaction winds up being very accretive to both management and Apollo, which, after the transaction is over, we will own the business roughly equally.”

The so-called "MonsterVerse" is nowadays as silly as the original Toho "Godzilla" sequels became. The franchise's first entry, 2014's divisive but successful "Godzilla," looks downright anomalous. Directed with impeccable scale and craftsmanship by Gareth Edwards, the film exercises careful restraint, escalating the spectacle to make it more satisfying. The palette is made from smog and fire, i.e. what Godzilla and his monster adversaries (the MUTOs) leave in their wake. As star Elizabeth Olsen noted, the film is cut from the cloth of the original 1954 "Godzilla," where the eponymous monster is an allegory for nuclear destruction and natural disasters. 

2014's "Godzilla" isn't perfect. It has a so-so script and Aaron Taylor-Johnson feels out of his depth as the lead (even if "The Fall Guy" proved he can be a movie star). Compared to the other MonsterVerse movies, though, it looks like "Jaws."

When Edwards' "Godzilla" went into production, the franchise was in a bad place.

Two producers who attempted to make a biopic about Roberto Clemente are now suing the baseball legend’s sons, alleging that the family twice sold the rights to Clemente’s life story.

Producers Jonah Hirsch and Angel Munoz announced plans in March 2023 to adapt the family-written biography, “Clemente: The True Legacy of an Undying Hero,” into a feature film. But after the announcement, the pair discovered that Thomas Tull, the former CEO of Legendary Pictures, was developing his own Clemente feature.

Legendary, which produced “42,” starring Chadwick Boseman as Jackie Robinson, had optioned Clemente’s life rights in 2015, intending to produce a film based on the David Maraniss biography “Clemente: The Passion and Grace of Baseball’s Last Hero.”

A lawsuit has been filed against the sons of baseball legend Roberto Clemente, who allegedly defrauded an indie production company by selling it the rights to a biopic of their father despite Legendary Pictures having already optioned the film.

That production banner, Inside the Park, in a complaint filed on Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, says it developed the movie for over two years only for it to fall apart after learning that the endeavor was solely meant to “generate renewed interest and publicity” in the hall-of-famer for another project.

More than 50 years after his death, the Pittsburgh Pirates icon generated renewed interest in the entertainment industry. But a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court claims that two of Clemente’s family members and their agent, Cmg, sold off rights to his story even though another production entity held an option to it.

It didn’t happen at Universal’s presentation, but we finally got a Christopher Nolan announcement at CinemaCon 2024.

On Thursday morning, Paramount Pictures’ President of Domestic Distribution Chris Aronson revealed that Nolan’s “Interstellar” will return to theaters on September 27, 2024 in both 70mm and IMAX formats. The re-release is a celebration of the film’s 10-year anniversary. It is probably also — at least somewhat — a continued celebration of Nolan’s Best Picture-winner “Oppenheimer.”

Of course, the “Oppenheimer” victory isn’t for Paramount to tout, and its studio Universal took a brief victory lap (or two) during its own Wednesday afternoon Colosseum presentation. The on-stage champagne-popping split time with “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and included a prerecorded message from Nolan. (He did not touch on “Mario.”)

In the package played for a packed house of (mostly) exhibitors, Nolan said he had been “very nervous” about showing “Oppenheimer” footage to the same CinemaCon audience last year.

Fans who are eager to experience—or re-experience—Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ Dune: Part Two in IMAX will have even further opportunities to view the film in theaters as the critically acclaimed blockbuster extends its run in the format’s top 20 markets across North America. Beginning Friday, April 19, fans will have two additional weeks to see the film in IMAX.

This includes 70Mm IMAX in two locales: Los Angeles’s Universal Cinema AMC at CityWalk and New York City’s AMC Lincoln Square 13. The announcement was made today by Jeff Goldstein, President, Domestic Distribution at Warner Bros. Pictures.

Who’s ready for a Sandworm ride? The long-awaited (and delayed) sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s Dune is getting spicy in theaters, and we want to know what you think about the film! Anticipation for Dune: Part Two has been through the roof since last year, and then the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes hit Hollywood. Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. Film Group agreed to delay the film until 2024, knowing that a robust promotional campaign for the science-fiction epic would serve the project (and the box office) well.

When Godzilla gets mad, he yells at stuff. Dude loves to roar. When he's not stomping on cities, smashing King Ghidorah in the face(s), or hibernating in the Pacific, everyone's favorite nuclear gorilla-whale is sounding his barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world. The accepted spelling of Godzilla's roar is "Skreeonk," a word often seen in Godzilla comics. Since the monster's inception in 1954, Godzilla has more or less retained the same roar, with the sound only undergoing remixes and aural sweetening as sound technology evolved. The Godzilla roar from 2023's "Godzilla Minus One" is not terribly far afield from the Godzilla roar heard in Ishiro Honda's "Gojira." Enterprising Godzilla fans have compiled the various Godzilla roars into tidy video montages. It's a high-pitched wail undergirded by an animalistic growl. It is distinctly Godzilla. 

In 2014, for the franchise's 60th anniversary, the Godzilla series was rebooted in America by American filmmakers.

Colossal Biosciences, a company devoted to genetically resurrecting the woolly mammoth, is the subject of Oscar-winning director James Reed’s next documentary series for Teton Ridge Entertainment, a company backed by former Legendary CEO Thomas Tull.

Reed, who won an Academy Award in 2020 for co-directing “My Octopus Teacher,” is currently in production on the multi-year docuseries, which will follow the Dallas-based company as it uses gene-editing technology to bring back extinct species including the woolly mammoth, the thylacine (commonly referred to as the Tasmanian tiger) and the dodo bird. Reed will chronicle how Colossal, which deems itself the world’s first de-extinction company, strives to rewild the extinct animals and bring them back to their natural habitats.

Teton Ridge is financing the first phase of the docu’s production with the intention to find a distribution partner to bring the film to market.

When Colossal Biosciences launched in 2021 with a splashy New York Times article stating it aimed to to resurrect the Wooly Mammoth, the company’s goals drew comparisons to entertainment properties like Jurassic Park. Now Colossal, described as the world’s first de-extinction company, is making steps to enter the entertainment space with the hire of veteran executive Emily Castel as its chief marketing officer.

In the new role, Castel will lead the company’s brand, experiences, consumer products and emerging media, which would include entertainment content.

Dune: Part Two, the second half of director Denis Villeneuve’s two-part adaptation of the Frank Herbert novel Dune, is now scheduled to be released on March 1st – but there are five more Herbert Dune novels that could serve as the basis for future films, and Villeneuve and his Dune stars Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya have all expressed interest in continuing the franchise. In an interview with Total Film magazine, Villeneuve said the ending of Dune: Part Two will set up the events of a third Dune film… if they get the chance to make it. He told Total Film, “All of the elements are there. But I think the movie adaptation is more tragic than the book. Warner Bros has pulled Bong Joon-ho’s anticipated sci-fi pic Mickey 17 from its release calendar, bumping up Adam Wingard’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire from April 12th to March 29th, 2024, when it will debut in IMAX.

We’re told that the Mickey 17 move was due to shifts in production amidst last year’s strikes, and that a new date will be coming relatively soon. Godzilla‘s move to the weekend previously inhabited by that title sees it set to open with very little competition, a re-release of Alice Rorhwacher’s La Chimera being the only other plan, exhibition-wise, for that frame.

Bong Joon Ho’s upcoming sci-fi Mickey 17 starring Robert Pattinson has been undated by Warner Bros due to strike disruption and is expected to be given a new date soon.

Mickey 17 was previously set to open on March 29 this year.

Before the SAG-AFTRA strike ended, the highly-anticipated sequel pushed the film’s release to guarantee a massive marketing push for Denis Villeneuve’s sequel. The outlet will print two gorgeous Dune Part Two Empire Magazine covers for fans to collect, featuring House Atreides and Harkonnen members. Yesterday, Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. said they would push the release of Dune: Part Two, with the film now coming to theaters on March 15, 2024.

This change in release date has caused a knock-on effect. Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire was set to be released on March 15, 2024, but will now move to April 12, 2024. That is the date that The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim was supposed to be released, which will now be pushed to December 13, 2024. The reason for the Dune: Part Two delay is said to be because of the SAG-AFTRA strike, as the studio clearly wants its stars to be able to promote the movie.

Dune: Part Two, the second half of director Denis Villeneuve’s two-part adaptation of the Frank Herbert novel Dune, has a release date of November 3rd – and in this build-up to the film’s release, we’ve previously only heard that Villeneuve wrote the screenplay with Jon Spaihts, who he also collaborated with on the script for Dune: Part One. (Their Part One co-writer Eric Roth decided not to work on the follow-up.) Now, The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin has revealed that he was also a “participating writer” on Dune: Part Two!

Speaking with The Playlist, Mazin said that he’s basically out of the movie business, because he’s focusing on The Last of Us and his other TV work. But “I will work with certain directors when they call because I love them and because they’re so brilliant. So if, like, Denis Villeneuve calls, then absolutely.

First up, Japanese surrealist horror film New Religion is now streaming exclusively on Screambox beginning today, written and directed by Keishi Kondo.

In the film, “After her daughter’s death, divorced Miyabi begins working as a call girl. One day, she meets an unsettling customer who wants to take pictures of her body parts. Soon, she realizes that every time she allows her body to be photographed her daughter’s spirit gets closer. She must decide how far she is willing to go to connect with her daughter once again.”

On June 22nd, Legendary Entertainment and the Netflix streaming service will be bringing us “a new epic chapter in Legendary’s Monsterverse franchise” in the form of a Kong animated series called Skull Island. Two weeks out from the show’s premiere, a full trailer has been released online and can be seen in the embed above.

Brian Duffield, writer of the genre films The Babysitter, Spontaneous, Underwater, and Love and Monsters, is a writer and executive producer on Skull Island. The animated series will center on a group of explorers that find themselves on a collision course with strange beasts, terrifying Titans and the most mysterious island the world has ever known!

We had previously heard that the leads of the show are shipwrecked characters who are desperate to survive the most dangerous place on Earth, the island that is home to colossal monsters, including the iconic “megaprimatus” Kong.
