Prime Video has ordered Rise of the Empress, which is based on the book series of the same name by author Julie C. Dao. Work on the show is still in early stages, but we do have some information to get us all giddy!

There are two novels in the series - Forest of a Thousand Lanterns and Kingdom of the Blazing Phoenix. Crazy Rich Asians star Gemma Chan and the iconic Viola Davis are attached as executive producers. Crystal Liu and James Wong are working together as showrunners, writers, and executive producers on the project. Dao will also serve as an EP.

The Amazon-owned streamer has greenlit a series based on Julie C. Dao’s Rise of the Empress novels. The drama — which counts Viola Davis, Forest Whitaker and Gemma Chan among its executive producers — is set in a “fantastical ancient Asian empire,” per the show’s logline, and centers on a peasant girl named Xifeng who, backed by a vengeful sorceress, vies to win the heart of the heir to the throne.

Crystal Liu (American Horror Story) and James Wong (The X-Files, AHS) will serve as co-showrunners on the series, which comes from Amazon MGM Studios, Davis and Julius Tennon’s JuVee Productions, and Whitaker and Nina Yang Bongiovi’s Significant Productions.

“This story, led by an incredible female heroine, is an inspiring tale of strength and resilience,” said Nick Pepper, head of wholly owned U.S. SVOD TV development and series at Amazon MGM Studios.

The new UK Culture Secretary said she is “clear that people need to be heard, action has to be taken and perpetrators have to be stopped” as she stressed her lack of tolerance for bad behavior and a culture of complaints being “swept under the rug.”

She said she takes a “dim view” of big TV industry players who are not financially backing Ciisa, the yet-to-launch film and TV bullying reporting body.

The 2024 film is set in the 1930s during the Second Spanish Republic in Spain and it follows a precocious and prolific writer who is raised by her mother to become the model of future women.

With Wicked conquering the Earth, the million-dollar question for filmmaker Jon M. Chu as he reaps the biggest box office opening of his career ($164.2M) is where, oh, where is the Crazy Rich Asians sequel?

The Warner Bros. movie broke glass ceilings not only on-screen for Asian and Asian American actors, but also at the box office with a $35.2M domestic opening, a $174.9M U.S./Canada take and close to $240M WW. A sequel was promptly announced by the studio following its opening in late summer 2018. The original trilogy of books are by Kevin Kwan with book 2 titled China Rich Girlfriend and the third, Rich People Problems. The movie blasted off the careers of Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Awkwafina, and Gemma Chan to name a few.

Actor Frank Grillo is among a select few who have acted in both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and James Gunn's upcoming DC Universe. He played Brock Rumlow/Crossbones in the MCU and will play Rick Flag, Sr. in the Dcu. As such, he has unique insight into what both franchises are like.

In an interview with Cinema Blend, the actor said that Marvel has "been in trouble a little bit because they got, I think, way over their skis, so to speak." He then elaborated that the manner in which James Gunn and Peter Safran are crafting the Dcu "creates a cohesiveness and an understanding of the character" through using the same actors across animated and live-action projects.

While speaking to CinePop during D23 Brazil yesterday, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige shared an update on the status of an Eternals follow-up and spoke about the possibility of characters from the Inhumans making their MCU debut.

Scarlett Johansson has played Black Widow in a wide variety of Marvel Cinematic Universe movies over the years, and because of the size of her roles in certain films or the story Natasha Romanoff had in them, some Black Widow appearances in the MCU rank higher than others. After being part of some of the McU's best movies and leading a solo film, Johansson has revealed that she is unlikely to play Black Widow again.

While a Black Widow sequel starring Johansson might be difficult, the actress is once again involved with the MCU. Unlike Avengers stars Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, who have teamed up with Marvel Studios to act in different roles, Johansson returned to the MCU as an executive producer on Thunderbolts*. If she never plays Natasha again, the MCU already has plenty of exciting appearances by the character, with some of them being better than the rest for key reasons.

The MCU is gearing up to introduce the Mutants, something we’ve known since Disney acquired Fox. While you could argue that the Mutants have already made a few brief appearances, the X-Men themselves haven’t yet entered the MCU.

Although their full debut is still some time away, Marvel has promised a major introduction in the future.

Even though we don’t know all the details, it’s clear that Feige and Marvel are taking their time to get it right. The X-Men’s arrival in the MCU will be a major moment and will shape the franchise for years to come.

Given the importance of this debut, fans are understandably anxious about who Marvel will cast. With an already-established X-Men universe, comparisons between the old and new casts are inevitable.

Hiroyuki Sanada’s involvement with The Wolverine, and later Avengers: Endgame, has fans wondering why Marvel has not yet used the legendary actor to facilitate a bigger role in the MCU. Known for playing a host of samurai and samurai-adjacent characters throughout his career, there is one character that the actor could play with his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The most recent Studio Ghibli film (The Boy and the Heron) is now streaming on Max, but its ending may be confusing for a lot of viewers.

Hayao Miyazaki wrote and directed the Academy Award-winning animated film, which was in development for seven years before its release in July 2023.

As with most Studio Ghibli films, The Boy and the Heron features both a Japanese and English-speaking cast, the latter of which includes A-listers such as Robert Pattinson, Karen Fukuhara, Gemma Chan, Florence Pugh, and Willem Dafoe.
