Hayley has worked as a costume designer for film, television, theatre since the year 2000, always focusing on story and character first, but with a love for original, supportive and collaborative design.
Hayley grew up in Tasmania with an early interest in period costume history and science fiction, both influencing her heavily. With strong costume cutting and making skills, many of the productions she designs have a high percentage of costumes custom made for purpose. Often using a process called 'hybrid design', Hayley loves to blend historical costume with contemporary design and other contrasting aesthetics. Colour remains a central focus of her work, employing balance through asymmetry and the use of hard curves define her more stylized work.
Originally from Australia, Hayley attended RMIT University in Melbourne and has been mostly based in the UK since 2005, having worked in many countries including Australia, England, Wales, Italy, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Morocco, Scotland, France, Northern Ireland, Greece, Spain, Lithuania, Jamaica and Brazil.
Based in Wales, Hayley is married to the Concept Artist and Designer Darren Fereday, they met when collaborating on space suits while working on long-running British Science Fiction TV series Doctor Who.
Hayley was chosen as Artist in residence at the V&A Museum 2012-13, in association with the blockbuster exhibition 'Hollywood Costume'; her work in the residency was focused on Hybrid-Design for Science-Fiction genre. During her residency at the V&A she produced a 23-minute science fiction film called 'AIR' which starred Antonia Thomas, Tom Riley and David Schofield. In 2013, Hayley also participated in a design residency in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as part of the 'Tempo festival'.
