There’s no other anime in the history of the world that has had a greater influence on global pop culture than Dragon Ball. Every year since 2015, fans can see Super Saiyan Blue Goku floating around in the streets of New York during Macy’s Thanksgiving parade. The martial arts presented in Dragon Ball were a huge inspiration for Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Everyone from Frank Ocean to Joey Bada$$ and even Drake has made references to Dragon Ball Z in their songs, with Drake even depicting using a Kamehameha wave in a fictional dance match with Chris Brown. On the other hand, fans also know that Dragon Ball was in turn influenced by Western media like Star Wars, Cinderella, and Jackie Chan movies. But there’s another aspect of Dragon Ball that...

What can we say about Chevy Chase on his 81st birthday that we haven’t already said before?
Here’s the good news: We don’t have to say it. After decades of burning down every bridge in sight, it was no problem to find 81 burns to light the candles on his cake. Below is a birthday portrait of the man of the hour, courtesy of the co-workers, directors and other unfortunates who’ve worked with Chase over the years.

Believe me fellow Community fans. I know it feels like this movie is never going to happen. But it is, it's just taking a while. And look, I'm more than eager to see it. Though I'd rather the writers of Community: The Movie take their sweet time to make a comedic gem than feel rushed. Patience is a virtue, my friends. There's still some more waiting to do, as Shirley actress Yvette Nicole Brown has provided an update about the film.
In speaking with TheWrap, the star revealed that the movie which will be streaming on Peacock is still "going to happen." Though there might be slightly further delays because the script is "being reworked" for Shirley's character, per the news outlet. Initially, Brown wasn't going to be a part of the film. Though now that she is attached, the writers have had to change the script up to...

Six seasons and nearly a decade later, a Community movie is still on the horizon.
In a recent interview, returning star Yvette Nicole Brown confirmed that “it’s going to happen,” but the script is being reworked after she signed on to reprise her role as Christian mother and entrepreneur Shirley Bennett.
“I think it’s being reworked, but we all have read an entire, full script. So a script exists. I heard that we have the big credit in LA that gives you money to make the film. So we’re definitely going to be doing it in LA,” Brown told The Wrap.
Her interview comes after co-star Joel McHale took responsibility for the movie’s delay, telling GQ that fans “can fully blame my schedule” following speculation that Donald Glover’s busy schedule was holding up production.
Brown, who officially joined the cast of Community: The Movie after it was announced in 2022, explained,...

According to recent research from Amazon Ads, 72% of monthly streaming viewers want to see more authentic, cross-cultural stories in the media. That study, titled “From Ads to Zeitgeist,” examines why streaming is at the forefront of the globalization of storytelling.
“It’s an interesting time in the world of television and content creation,” said Nick Pepper, head of wholly owned content for Amazon MGM Studios, sitting down to discuss the trend toward globalization at Variety’s Entertainment and Technology Summit, presented by City National Bank. The broadcast model — which was focused on the U.S. market and, thus, U.S.-centric storytelling — is no longer king.
Now, with streaming services like Amazon’s Prime Video in 240 countries and territories, “there’s a way to tell stories to our customers or our audience that really mines and exposes many different cultures,” Pepper said. But there’s a responsibility there, too: “We...

Who will win Record of the Year at the 2025 Grammys? This award goes to the artists, producers, and engineers of the year’s best single. That’s where this differs from Song of the Year, which goes specifically to songwriters. Though this award is not technically a popularity contest, commercial success is typically a major factor, like Miley Cyrus‘s reigning champion “Flowers,” a blockbuster that spent several weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100. So will the next winner be a big hit as well? Scroll down to see our official racetrack odds, which are calculated based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. The odds are always changing, so we’ll be updating this list as the season progresses.
For most of history there were five Grammy nominees in the Record of the Year category, same as there were for Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist.

Chevy Chase and Donald Glover don’t exactly get along when the cameras aren’t rolling. That’s thanks to Chase remarks like “People think you’re funnier because you’re Black” in between takes on Community. Show creator Dan Harmon regularly apologized for Chase’s behavior after the fact, but Glover took it all in stride.
“I know there’s a human in there somewhere,” he once told The New Yorker about Chase. “He’s almost too human.”
The acrimony between Chase and Glover might be the reason that one of the show’s original ideas went out the window. “Before we started shooting, the writers made a decision that Troy and Pierce would be the Beavis and Butt-Head of the ensemble, always getting up to no good and egging each other on,” Harmon told The Independent. “It seemed like a natural fit.”

Has Star Wars lost its sense of fun? Donald Glover, who played Han Solo's rogue friend Lando Calrissian in 2018's Solo: A Star Wars Story, seems to think so, and he wants to bring that sense of fun back to his upcoming Lando movie. "Sometimes it’s way too serious," Glover told The Wall Street Journal of the Star Wars franchise. "Everything that has to do with the Skywalkers is like so serious. [With] Lando, I think the best part about him is he’s a scoundrel. And I feel like people can relate to that, and he’s probably like ‘man, this war is whack. I need money,’ which I feel everyone can relate to. I want to bring fun to ‘Star Wars.’ I just want it to be fun.”

Exclusive: Jon Watts, his production company Freshman Year and producer Dianne McGunigle have been staked to a first-look feature deal with Walt Disney Studios. Under the deal, Watts will direct feature-length projects for Disney live action and 20th Century Studios with the option to produce.
Watts came from the low budget well-received Sundance indie film Cop Car to be chosen to join Tom Holland and Zendaya in the third iteration of the Spider-Man franchise. Some $4 billion in gross later spread over three films, Watts stepped out and wrote, directed and produced Wolfs, starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt, for Apple. That film, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival, gets a limited theatrical release before bowing September 27 on Apple TV+. Actor Donald Glover hopes to bring more levity to the Star Wars franchise in his planned spinoff film focused on the character of Lando Calrissian. In a recent interview, Glover expressed his desire for the project to have a fun and comedic tone that balances the increasingly serious storylines seen in recent Star Wars productions. As a longtime fan of the series himself, Glover believes maintaining a sense of lighthearted enjoyment is important.
Glover first portrayed Lando in the 2018 film Solo: A Star Wars Story. He has since taken a lead creative role in developing the Lando spinoff alongside his brother Stephen Glover. While originally planned as a television series, the project is now envisioned as a feature film. However, details around production timelines remain uncertain.

“Star Wars” is exactly what people think about when they mention escapism in films and TV. The Original Trilogy, especially, is filled with fun, whimsy, and amazing situations. But somewhere down the line, things went from a farmboy learning how to use a laser sword to political maneuvering and sons killing their fathers. It just can get really serious. And that’s something Donald Glover would like to change with his forthcoming Lando Calrissian spinoff film.

He doesn’t like it and he doesn’t agree with it, but he won’t accept it. Donald Glover has taken aim at the Star Wars franchise, saying that all of the fun and excitement it once had has drifted off into a tight-ass galaxy far, far away.
Maybe it’s the nostalgia getting the best of us or that some of us have aged out of that thrill of seeing Star Wars repeatedly on opening weekend or that the franchise just can’t focus on “fun”, but Donald Glover is having none of it, hoping he can be part of bringing some pure entertainment back into the series. “I just want it to be fun. We first heard of plans for a Lando TV series in December 2020 during a Disney Investor Day. Lucasfilm surprised Star Wars fans who tuned in by revealing that Justin Simien would serve as showrunner on the project, with Donald Glover tapped to reprise his role as the iconic character after first playing him in 2018's Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Unfortunately, the show quickly got stuck in development hell, with Glover frequently left to dodge questions about whether he was going to reprise the role first made famous by Billy Dee Willaims.
As for Simien, the series was repeatedly brought up in interviews when he was doing the rounds to promote Disney's Haunted Mansion movie last year. The Atlanta star-producer continued, referencing the strife present in the galaxy, “It’s very hard to have fun right now. It’s tough because there are very serious things happening. Those are the only things that connect us, weirdly, so I get why things are serious but part of the human experience, I believe, is we have a responsibility to have an enjoyment, and I just feel like we’re lacking in that department.”

Donald Glover is set to return as “Star Wars” fan-favorite Lando Calrissian in a movie he’s developing for Disney and Lucasfilm alongside his brother and frequent collaborator Stephen Glover, and all Donald Glover wants to do is to bring the fun back to the “Star Wars” franchise.
“I just want it to be fun,” he recently told The Wall Street Journal during a video interview. “As a ‘Star Wars’ fan myself, I think it’s important that there needs to be fun being had.”

This year, fewer franchise shows were nominated at the 76th Emmy Awards, which aired on Sunday, leaving room for other high-profile series to shine, such as FX’s “Shogun” and “The Bear,” two titles with a leading number of nominations.
One of the most anticipated categories of the night was Best Actress and Actor in a Drama Series.
Among the 10 nominated actors, the question arises: Who has made the most impact on audiences? Popularity alone isn’t enough to determine this. It’s also essential to consider audiences’ sentiments about each actor. That’s where Parrot Analytics’ Audience Solutions data comes in, revealing the emotions driving demand for each talent.
By combining demand data with audience sentiment, Jennifer Aniston emerged as the most in-demand actress during the first half of 2024 and had the second-highest level of positive sentiment. Aniston, a household name for over 25 years since her role as Rachel on “Friends,...

Also last week, the final trailer for Sony’s Marvel-inspired film Venom: The Last Dance dropped online, revealing that the movie features the villainous Knull, “an eldritch god of darkness and the creator of the symbiotes.” Now, The Cosmic Circus has shared the Rumor that, while Venom: The Last Dance is meant to be the last entry in the Venom franchise, leaving it as a trilogy, that movie might not be the last time we see Tom Hardy play Eddie Brock and his symbiote pal Venom, nor would it be the last time we see Knull,...

Donald Glover is still part of the “Star Wars” franchise with the resurrected “Lando” film.
The multi-hyphenate star told the Wall Street Journal in the below video that “Lando” is still in the works despite writer/director Justin Simien exiting the planned series. The Disney+ show was re-conceptualized as a film, with Glover and his brother Stephen Glover taking over.
And Glover has a specific vision for how “Lando” can breathe new life into the franchise itself.

And just like that, another hotly contested Emmy awards season race has come to a close. After last year's WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes pushed the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony into January of this year, last night the glitzy statue-doling bash's 76th edition — this year hosted by Schitt's Creek's Eugene and Dan Levy — took place at the Peacock Theater in LA. And on a night of few major surprises, the two most nominated shows of the year — samurai epic Shōgun and kitchen-based "comedy" The Bear — got their hands ("Hands!") on 18 and 11 awards respectively, including historic Outstanding Actor and Actress In A Drama wins for the former's Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai, and second Outstanding Actor and Supporting Actor wins for the latter's Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

Father and son Eugene and Dan Levy did a respectable job of hosting the 2024 Primetime Emmys, popping in just enough throughout the two-hour running time to guide the show without overstaying their welcome. Their opening bit avoided any controversial topics, and Dan Levy got a big laugh when he described the Emmys as broadcast TV’s biggest night for honoring movie stars on streaming services. Eugene also earned solid applause when he joked, “In the true spirit of The Bear, we will not be making any jokes,” while addressing the show’s controversial classification as a comedy.
Speaking of The Bear, the series was awarded four Emmys during the broadcast in the Actor (Jeremy Allen White), Supporting Actor (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), Supporting Actress (Liza Colón-Zayas), and Outstanding Directing categories. But Hacks pulled off a surprise win, snagging the Comedy Series Emmy.

The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards just aired on ABC, and things went about as expected. In other words, the excellent historical drama Shōgun won Best Drama Series; the caustic slice-of-life series The Bear won Best Comedy Series, since I guess it's a little more like a comedy than Shōgun; and the autobiographical stalker drama Baby Reindeer won Best Limited or Anthology Series.
Those three were the big winners of the night, with them each taking home four awards. Jeremy Allen White won Best Actor In A Comedy Series as expected, and his costar Ebon Moss-Bachrach won Best Supporting Actor. On the drama side, Hiroyuki Sanada won Best Actor and Anna Sawai won Best Actress; she was the one I was really invested in. She was magnificent as Mariko and if she hadn't won I would have been forced to write a strongly worded letter to whoever votes in these things.

FX’s Shogun and The Bear dominated the 76th Emmys in Los Angeles on Sunday night as they finished with 18 and 11 wins apiece, including last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards, despite an upset in the comedy series category where HBO/Max’s Hacks was the surprise winner.
Shogun was named best dramatic series and took home both lead acting wins for Hiroyuku Sanada and Anna Sawai, who became the first actress of Asian descent to win the category. The show itself became the first mostly not in the English language to win the series award.

Only eight months after the last Emmy ceremony (which was delayed due to the strikes), the Primetime Emmy Awards are back, although there were some big surprises in store. Everyone (myself included) expected The Bear to own every category it was nominated in. While it did well, winning many big categories including Best Actor in a Comedy Series, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress, it lost Best Comedy Series (and actress) to Hacks.
Netflix’s controversial limited series Baby Reindeer also cleaned up, nabbing awards for star and creator Richard Gadd plus co-star Jessica Gunning. But, FX was the evening’s big winner, with their epic series, Shogun, dominating the drama categories, with the great Hiroyuki Sanada winning the prize for Best Actor, and Anna Sawai taking Best Actress, alongside the show’s Best Drama win. Hiroyuki Sanada became the second Asian performer to win Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role in FX’s “Shōgun” at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday. The prolific Japanese actor was recognized for his portrayal of Lord Yoshii Toranaga in the first season of the drama series.
With the acting Emmy win — Sanada’s first of his six decade–long career — he follows in the footsteps of Lee Jung-jae’s history-making accomplishment in 2022 when Lee became the first Asian actor to win the lead drama actor Emmy for Netflix’s non-English series “Squid Game.”
Nominated alongside Sanada were Gary Oldman (“Slow Horses”), Donald Glover (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”), Dominic West (“The Crown”), Idris Elba (“Hijack”) and Walton Goggins (“Fallout”).

The man who would be “Shōgun” has once again ascended to the top of his field. Hiroyuki Sanada, who played Lord Yoshii Toranaga in the FX historical epic, won the Emmy for Best Actor in a Drama Series. It’s Sanada’s first win and first nomination, although he is also nominated for Best Drama Series as an executive producer of “Shōgun.”
The win marks just the second time the Emmy for Best Actor in a Drama Series went to an actor of Asian descent. In 2022, Lee Jung-jae became the first Asian actor to win (after becoming the first Asian actor nominated in the category).
Sanada beat out competitors that included Oscar winners, Emmy winners, and a fellow first-time nominee (who certainly deserved acknowledgement prior to 2024). Many considered Gary Oldman to be Sanada’s biggest rival, considering the “Slow Horses” star’s stature in the industry as well as the...

For the second time this year, Hollywood gathered to honor TV’s biggest stars.
After the 2023 ceremony was delayed to January 2024 by last year’s Hollywood strikes, it’s only been eight months since TV’s biggest stars gathered at Los Angeles’ LA Live Peacock Theatre to announce the Emmy winners. Like months ago, “The Bear” stars Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach once again won lead actor and supporting actor in a comedy, and co-star Colón-Zayas also won her first Emmy in the supporting actress race. “Hacks” star Jean Smart won lead actress in a comedy, and in the biggest surprise of the night, HBO’s “Hacks” won outstanding comedy over “The Bear,” which many believed to be the frontrunner.

On Sunday we are celebrating the winners of the 76th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, the second time this year after January’s strike-delayed 75th Emmys, but we know the results will be, at least in part, quite different (well maybe not for The Bear). So here is my stab at predicting just who those winners will be.
Outstanding Drama Series
With only The Crown returning from the lineup here just eight months ago, what might have been a fresh, wide open race now seems utterly predictable in terms of a runaway winner. After already setting a record for a single season series with 14 wins at last weekend’s Creative Arts ceremonies, FX’s Shōgun with 25 nominations overall to lead this year’s list of nominees will certainly prevail here, proof that FX’s last minute move from Limited Series to Drama Series will pay off big time.
