"Rebellion must come from within, like a viper hidden in a sock drawer." Magnolia Pictures has revealed a new trailer for an indie dark comedy titled Sister Midnight, from Indian filmmaker Karan Kandhari. This premiered in the Directors' Fortnight sidebar at the Cannes Film Festival last year, and also showed at the London, Denver, and Sitges Film Festivals. A woman is transformed into a disturbing & ruthless figure after entering an arranged marriage. An oddball couple shoved together in a small Mumbai shack with paper-thin walls. They are awkward & alone-together. Unpredictable Uma does her best to cope with the heat, her lack of domestic skills, nosy neighbours and her bumbling spouse until the nocturnal world of Bombay and its inhabitants lead her to face her own strange behaviors. Featuring an eclectic soundtrack (Interpol frontman Paul Banks is the film's composer) and a singular visual aesthetic. Starring Radhika Apte as Uma, with Ashok Pathak,...

Subhash K Jha revisits R Balki’s Pad Man, which featured Akshay Kumar and Sonam Kapoor. The film, which was released in 2018, was revolutionary in many ways, shining the light on social injustice.
One man in Tamil Nadu, who is miraculously a convincingly-transformed North Indian in Balki’s endearing Pad Man, decided to do something about making sanitary pads affordable to poor women. The thought was not just unmentionable but also outrageous. It still is. The pain, humiliation, strife, and final victory of Laxmikant Chauhan is narrated in a series of quickly-cut quirky, bitterly humorous episodes (editor Chandan Arora can take a bow) that could easily have become caricatured, preachy, and propagandist.
Pad Man is none of the above. It celebrates the spirit of enterprise with enrapturing integrity and tempered gusto, rendering the saga of Laxmikant Chauhan’s journey from familial humiliation and spouse-dissertation to a Padma Shri addressing the United Nations.

In 2018, 26-year-old American evangelical missionary John Allen Chau went on the most dangerous mission of his life. He secretly journeyed to North Sentinel Island in the Bay of Bengal in an attempt to convert its small population to Christianity, despite their strident insistence on staying disconnected from the rest of the world. As he tried to make contact with the people of the island, he was killed by arrows. His body was never recovered.
Now, Justin Lin’s Last Days seeks out to provide a coherent characterization of the young evangelical. Chau (Sky Yang) is presented in this misaligned attempt at character-based drama as an over-eager obsessive who never knew how to exercise caution or stop proclaiming his passion for Jesus to the world. A passionate evangelical from a comfortable California suburb, he doesn’t appear to have ever had or wanted any other profession than carrying the gospel to...

Plot: The true story of John Allen Chau (Sky Yang), a devout American Christian missionary who was killed while trying to contact an isolated tribe on North Sentinel Island in the Indian Ocean.
Review: Justin Lin is best known nowadays for his work on the Fast & Furious franchise. He is the man responsible for elevating what started out as a modestly budgeted, B-level series into the block-busting global behemoth it’s become. Yet, Lin began his career with a Sundance hit called Better Luck Tomorrow, which had an infamous Q&a (an audience member said it was irresponsible to make a movie with an Asian cast that didn’t have positive characters – prompting Roger Ebert to loudly proclaim them as condescending), and is a gem worth checking out if you haven’t seen it.

Justin Lin is no stranger to making movies built around spectacle. After all, he directed more Fast & Furious movies than any director working today before stepping away from the franchise (twice). He returns to something much smaller scale after his “Fast X” exit with “Last Days,” a narrative feature based on the true story of American missionary John Allen Chau, who visited and was killed by the isolated Indigenous Sentinelese people on their island off the coast of India after he tried to convert them. While this project seems like it could provide a fresh start for Lin and a return to his roots — he launched his career at Sundance with the indie drama “Better Luck Tomorrow” — it ultimately falls flat.
Unfortunately, instead of using the opportunity to offer up a nuanced, more incisive portrait of the man beyond the headlines, “Last Days” is a film that is so contrived,...

Spoiler Alert: The following review contains spoilers.
You’ve seen it so often, you might roll your eyes, but in “Last Days,” it really happens: American missionary John Allen Chau could have died as he approached North Sentinel Island, had the Bible in his breast pocket not absorbed the blow of a hostile Sentinelese arrow. What was Chau doing halfway around the globe, trying to convert a tribe that had nearly zero contact with the outside world? That’s the mystery director Justin Lin attempts to solve with “Last Days,” prompting an unexpected return to Sundance more than two decades after “Better Luck Tomorrow” launched his career there.
In the interim, Lin has directed no fewer than five “Fast & Furious” movies, which makes this independent production a conspicuous downshift from exorbitantly budgeted studio fare. Chau’s story has been told multiple times, from the Outside magazine article that served...

Director Justin Lin was last at the Sundance Film Festival in 2002 with his breakout indie teen crime drama Better Luck Tomorrow. Twenty-three years later, he is back with yet another indie project, Last Days, and clearly hoping to rekindle the fire that got him attention in the first place. Since 2006’s Tokyo Drift, Lin has been the go-to guy for the Fast & Furious franchise with five of them, most recently Fast 9 in 2019, as well as the most recent big-screen film in another hugely popular franchise, 2016’s Star Trek: Beyond.

Almost 20 years after his student film, “Bye Bye Miss Goodnight” (2005), Karan Kandhari makes another comedy-drama. “Sister Midnight” gathered 8 nominations in total, at such events as the British Independent Film Awards and the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
Sister Midnight is screening at Black Movie
Set in Mumbai, one of the most congested urban areas of India, the narrative follows Uma (Radhika Apte) and her attempts to find herself in a new reality, as she just moved in with her new husband, Gopal (Ashok Pathak), after an arranged marriage. They stay in a tiny one-room house, but Gopal, preferring to drink with friends after work, is rarely there. Her sole companion is the neighbour, Sheetal (Chhaya Kadam). Bored and disregarded, Uma becomes more and more frustrated. However, out of this frustration comes determination to change her situation.
At the beginning, due to a lot of exposition with very sparse dialogue, the movie does not offer much information.

Another BIFA filmmaker who we’ve seen on Dn’s pages in the past, Karan Kandhari – a nominee in this year’s The Douglas Hickox Award (Best Debut Director) category – first joined us for an interview back in 2012 with his short film about perfectly quaffed hair and finding your tribe Flight of the Pompadour. It was the second instalment in Kandhari’s A United Howl trilogy and as he explains below, an important bellwether in helping to define his cinematic voice, not only for himself but also for those who would later go on to support his feature projects. Case in point being his delightfully entertaining Bombay set debut Sister Midnight, a genre-bending comedy that premiered as part of Cannes Directors’ Fortnight about a frustrated and misanthropic newlywed who discovers certain feral impulses that land her in unlikely situations. “Sister Midnight,” Karan Kandhari’s first full-length film, was praised by critics at the prestigious Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival. It tells an interesting story about a woman’s journey of self-discovery in traditional Indian society.
The movie is about Uma, played by Radhika Apte, who changes from a young bride in a planned marriage to a rebellious main character who wants to be free. Kandhari doesn’t use heavy-handed messages. Instead, he focuses on showing how the character feels on the inside.
Kandhari said of the film’s complex plot, “We weren’t trying to beat a message over anyone’s head.” The director put much effort into using subtle, intuitive filmmaking methods to examine how people act.
Apte’s performance drives the story, showing Uma’s complicated mental journey with little dialogue and strong physical acting. The character slowly breaks from social norms, going through mysterious...

It’s tempting to read an agenda into Sister Midnight, the raucous genre-bending debut feature from writer-director Karan Kandhari. From the patriarchy to provincialism, society’s conventions seek to entrap the film’s misfit protagonist, Uma, at every turn, setting her up as a potential feminist heroine. But Kandhari, whose film premiered in Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight, is not interested in soapboxes. He’s barely interested in dialogue.
“One of the first things [Radhika Apte, who plays Uma] said to me was, ‘I don’t see this as a film [where] we’re trying to beat a message over anyone’s head.’ And I was like, ‘Absolutely, that’s not even how I think,’” Kandhari says of the Mumbai-set Sister, which follows Uma as she transforms from an ornery young bride in an arranged marriage into a thoroughly unconventional antihero. Magnet Releasing has acquired the US rights, with Protagonist Pictures handling world...

Whilst the eyes of the world may be locked firmly on the other side of the Atlantic this morning, back here in Blighty there is at least some positivity still to be shared yet. Having shone last year when the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes brought Hollywood to a standstill, the independent British cinema scene has continued to shine throughout 2024, with revered greats, rising stars, returning masters, and bold new narratives all emerging to ensure the flame for indies from these shores has never burned brighter. As such, it comes as no great surprise that the announcement of this year's British Independent Film Awards nominees is a veritable treasure trove of great art and great artists that stand to represent the very best British filmmaking has to offer.

This year’s BIFA nominations have been unveiled and it’s a delightfully diverse group of great films. More on those below.

Sister Midnight from Karan Kandhari (Bye Bye Miss Goodnight) is a hard film to review and classify, but I’m going to try after seeing the film at the 44th annual Hawaii International Film Festival. Funded in part by the British Film Institute and Film4, Sister Midnight opens with a young Indian bride on a train. She doesn’t look happy, and most of us would not be happy to be joined with a veritable stranger in an arraigned marriage within a system that would restrict and confine us to traditional gender roles, with no way to escape. Actress Radhika Apte plays the bride; currently, there’s no character name for her listed on imdb, which almost seems fitting, as this is a society that...

Karan Kandhari’s “Sister Midnight” is a surreal Mumbai fable with an aggressive comedic rhythm. It’s composed by hitting the same few notes ad nauseam, but hitting them exceptionally well and for much longer than one might expect before it eventually runs out of steam. All the while, Kandhari takes a novel visual approach to the topic of arranged marriage, situating his woebegone couple — his protagonist in particular, a woman who feels trapped — in a realm of strange psychosis. It’s better than it has any right to be, but not nearly as good as it should be.
Uma (Radhika Apte) is brash, acerbic and vulgar. Unable to cook or manage household expenses, she fulfills very few of the rigid expectations of a new Indian bride. When she arrives at her cramped new one-room apartment with her soft-spoken husband Gopal (Ashok Pathak) — an ostensible stranger — on their wedding night,...

It’s been nearly twenty years since director Karan Kandhari’s 2005 debut Bye Bye Miss Goodnight (since then working on short films and music videos, including Franz Ferdinand’s “Stand on the Horizon”). A plum role for celebrated Indian actress Radhika Apte finds the performer digging into this characterization with relish, however, the jarring tonal shifts tend to undermine her prowess.…...
