Netflix has unveiled new Indian originals today for 2025, after releasing teasers of previously-announced projects over the last few weeks.

New tentpole projects include Aryan Khan’s Bollywood-themed series The Ba***ds of Bollywood (The Bads of Bollywood) as well as Akka, written and directed by Dharmaraj Shetty under Yrf Entertainment.

The Ba***ds of Bollywood tells the story of an ambitious outsider and his friends as they navigate the larger-than-life yet uncertain world of Bollywood.

Akka is set in the 1980s matriarchal society of a fictional city of Pernuru, South India, and will star Keerty Suresh, Radhika Apte and Tanvi Azmi.

The streamer also unveiled its first Telugu comedy-drama series Super Subbu, which will star Sundeep Kishan, Mithila Palkar, Murali Sharma and Maanasa Choudhary.

Review: Justin Lin is best known nowadays for his work on the Fast & Furious franchise. He is the man responsible for elevating what started out as a modestly budgeted, B-level series into the block-busting global behemoth it’s become. Yet, Lin began his career with a Sundance hit called Better Luck Tomorrow, which had an infamous Q&a (an audience member said it was irresponsible to make a movie with an Asian cast that didn’t have positive characters – prompting Roger Ebert to loudly proclaim them as condescending), and is a gem worth checking out if you haven’t seen it.

They stay in a tiny one-room house, but Gopal, preferring to drink with friends after work, is rarely there. Her sole companion is the neighbour, Sheetal (Chhaya Kadam). Bored and disregarded, Uma becomes more and more frustrated. However, out of this frustration comes determination to change her situation.

As 2024 nears its end, that can only mean one thing — awards season is upon us! And while various Critics' Circle and Guild bashes have already gotten underway, tonight was the first major event of the season on this side of the pond: the British Independent Film Awards. Hosted by Peter Serafinowicz at London's Roundhouse, the ceremony saw Rich Peppiatt's barnstorming Irish rap trio biopic Kneecap — already one of Empire's Best Movies of 2024 — emerge as the night's biggest winner. In all, the film (which is streaming now on Prime Video UK) picked up seven gongs on the night, including Best British Independent Film, Best Joint Lead Performance for Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, Naoise Ó Cairealláin, JJ Ó Dochartaigh, and Best Debut Screenwriter for Peppiatt.

“Kneecap,” the hit Irish comedy biopic about the Belfast rap group of the same name, has landed the top honor at the British Independent Film Awards and a total of seven BIFA awards overall.

Writer/director Rich Peppiatt’s debut feature — which went into Sunday’s ceremony already having won four BIFA craft awards — was named best British independent film, with Peppiatt winning best debut screenwriter and Kneecap bandmates Liam Óg Ó Hannaidh, Naoise Ó Cairealláin and JJ Ó Dochartaigh (who all play themselves) winning best joint lead.

Elsewhere on the night, which was hosted by Peter Serafinowicz, Rungano Nyoni won best director for her sophomore feature “On Becoming A Guinea Fowl,” exploring buried secrets in a middle class Zambian family. The film’s lead star Susan Chardy won breakthrough performance.

Meanwhile, Sandhya Suri, writer/director of Hindi-language crime thriller “Santosh,” won best screenplay. “Santosh,” which is the U.K.

Rich Peppiatt’s Kneecap was the major winner at the 2024 British Independent Film Awards (Bifas), with seven wins in total including best British independent film.

“Saali Mohabbat,” a suspenseful drama, will be Manish Malhotra’s first movie as a director. It will be shown for the first time at the 55th International Film Festival of India (Iffi) in Goa on November 22.

The movie is a big step forward for Malhotra’s creativity and shows that he has grown beyond the fashion world. It’s also actress Tisca Chopra’s first time directing, and Radhika Apte, Divyenndu, and Anshumaan Pushkar are among the well-known actors in the group.

At the heart of the movie is an interesting story about a woman who gets caught up in a web of cheating, lying, and murder. Malhotra was excited about the project and said, “As soon as I read the script of ‘Saali Mohabbat,’ I was drawn to its intense and thrilling story.”

The movie, made by Malhotra’s Stage5 Production and Jio Studios, is meant to be an exciting theatrical experience.

“Sister Midnight,” Karan Kandhari’s first full-length film, was praised by critics at the prestigious Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival. It tells an interesting story about a woman’s journey of self-discovery in traditional Indian society.

The movie is about Uma, played by Radhika Apte, who changes from a young bride in a planned marriage to a rebellious main character who wants to be free. Kandhari doesn’t use heavy-handed messages. Instead, he focuses on showing how the character feels on the inside.

Kandhari said of the film’s complex plot, “We weren’t trying to beat a message over anyone’s head.” The director put much effort into using subtle, intuitive filmmaking methods to examine how people act.

It’s tempting to read an agenda into Sister Midnight, the raucous genre-bending debut feature from writer-director Karan Kandhari. This year’s BIFA nominations have been unveiled and it’s a delightfully diverse group of great films. More on those below.

There’s less than two months of 2024 left, which means that the awards season is also upon us. It’s time to celebrate this year’s excellent films with fancy statuettes, and first in line is the British Independent Film Awards, aka BIFAs. Nominations were announced today (5th November).

Rich Peppiatt’s joyously anarchic Kneecap leads the pack with a whopping 14 nominations to its name. Rose Glass’ Love Lies Bleeding follows with 12 nominations and Nora Fingscheidt also triumphed with nine.

Women are particularly well represented this year. Out of the five Best British Independent Film nominees, four are directed by women. It’s the same for the Best Director category, where Andrea Arnold, Nora Fingscheidt, Rose Glass and Rungano Nyoni are nominated along with Rich Peppiatt.

The subversive Irish flick Kneecap leads this year’s British Independent Film Award nominations with 14 nods, including Best Director and Best Screenplay.

Directed by Rich Peppiatt, the film’s impressive noms haul also includes nods for Best Debut Screenwriter, Best British Independent Film, and eight craft categories, including Best Casting and Best Cinematography.

Kneecap debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and has been picked to represent Ireland in the International Feature Film category of the 97th annual Academy Awards.
