HBO brings some great dramas that focus on historical events. Chernobyl is a five-part miniseries that told us of the events during and after the real nuclear disaster.
Of course, when the Chernobyl disaster happened, the Soviet Union would try to hide it all. It ended up being one of the biggest disasters at the time, showing the realities of radiation not just to those in the immediate vicinity, but those around the disaster.
The series then focused on the clean-up efforts, while people looked to figure out what really happened that night. Not only was this important to help people in need, but it was essential to prevent it from happening again. Chernobyl offers us a mixture of drama and history. There are many shows just like it, and here are five to watch next.

Since it took the streaming scene by storm, Netflix has had some great shows available on its service. However, as soon as the streaming giant became known for its quality prestige dramas, it also became quite notorious for canceling some of its best shows without any rhyme or reason, despite some of them being fan favorites.
Jonathan Groff in Mindhunter || Netflix
Mindhunter is one of those shows that needed more love from Netflix, but instead ended up being shelved for good. Of course, this had quite the reaction from fans, who were a little miffed about shows like Jupiter’s Legacy and Mindhunter being canceled, while other more subpar shows get renewed again and again.
There is no way that Mindhunter is going to come back, reveals David Fincher Bill and Holden in Mindhunter || Netflix
Despite having two brilliant seasons that fans adored, Mindhunter will not be getting a third season.

The latest Doctor Who revival hasn't been the hit most expected; with Disney+ bringing the series to a global audience and giving the long-running sci-fi series a much-needed cash injection, fans imagined it might finally reach the same heights as The Mandalorian and Stranger Things.
Instead, returning showrunner Russell T Davies' new season 1 divided fans and viewership hasn't been good. That's despite claims the main goal was drawing much younger viewers to the show.
Then, there was the expected (and unfortunate) backlash to Doctor Who featuring a Black lead and LGBTQ+ themes. Ultimately, things came to a head in July with a damning report suggesting the show could be cancelled after season 2 and that Disney+ might part ways with the BBC over what's proven to be a failed, pricey experiment for the streamer.
Talking to SFX (via SFFGazette.com), Davies didn't give too much away but confirmed Doctor Who has...

Exclusive: The BBC has dismissed viewer complaints about an episode of Doctor Who featuring a historic gay kiss between Ncuti Gatwa and Jonathan Groff.
Two disgruntled audience members took issue with the “inappropriate sexual innuendo” that developed between Gatwa’s Time Lord and Groff’s bounty hunter, Rogue, in a Bridgerton-inspired story.
The viewers said the Season 14 episode, titled ‘Rogue,’ featured content that was “unsuitable for children.” One person added that the speed of the Doctor and Rogue’s connection was “concerning.”
The BBC’s Executive Complaints Unit (Ecu) threw out the concerns. In a ruling on Thursday, the unit said the sexual innuendo was mild and suitable for Doctor Who’s young audience.
“The Ecu considered the sexual innuendo to be towards the mildest end of the spectrum and in any case likely to go over the heads of children,” the Ecu said.

Do you want to build a snowman? Are you still avoiding capes? After the gargantuan success of both "Frozen" and its sequel at Walt Disney Animation and "Incredibles 2" at Pixar Animation, it should come as no surprise that both franchises are being given more sequels, as announced officially at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, California today.
/Film's Jacob Hall was in attendance during the studio's big panel presentation at D23, where the studios revealed "Frozen 3" will arrive in 2027, and "The Incredibles 3" is currently in development at Pixar. Since neither "Frozen II" nor "Incredibles 2" had specific titles for the sequels, it doesn't seem like the three-quels will have any sort of subtitle either.
So, what do we know about both of these sequels after the big announcement at D23?

It can be tough to catch the magic of unease that “Longlegs” has laid on people during and after seeing the film.
Since seeing the latest Oz Perkins horror film, many have been clamoring to recapture that magic. Luckily there are plenty of TV shows that balance the supernatural with the everyday when it comes to hunting and tracking down a serial killer — and worse.
These are the seven TV shows you should check out once you see “Longlegs” and are needing to extend that pit-in-your-stomach feeling.

As much as classic Doctor Who fans hate to admit it, romantic tension between the Doctor and their companions is part of the formula. Eight was a dashing lead alongside Grace Holloway, Ten and Rose’s love story has been well documented, while Fifteen’s flirtation with almost-companion Rogue has us hoping that Jonathan Groff will board the Tardis again. And heck, long-time Whovians know all about the behind-the-scenes marriage of Four and Romana II.
So it’s understandable that some fans feel a bit of disappointment about the way things ended up between Jodie Whittaker’s 13th Doctor and Yaz, her most consistent companion. Despite the clear attraction between the two, Thirteen regenerated into David Tennant’s Fourteen before they could act on their feelings.
Whittaker has a message for those longing for more pining between the Doctor and Yaz: “[N]ever say never! We’ve got adventures to do.

Those lucky enough to attend May’s Disney’s upfronts at the North Javits Center were treated to clips, teases and appearances from some of the world’s biggest stars.
In the spotlight from the Bob Iger-led Mouse House were hits from the Disney stable including The Acolyte, Welcome to Wrexham, Abbott Elementary and a wealth of ESPN sports shows. The combined budget must have been astronomical.
But almost completely absent from the upfront festivities was Doctor Who, the iconic British sci-fi series that Disney+ now co-produces with the BBC following what was undoubtedly one of the biggest global TV show deals of the past decade. Doctor Who was handed a minor bit of real estate at the North Javits, but its lack of front-and-center placement may spin a yarn about the series’ position in the Disney priority log nearly three years on from the deal being struck.

The Outsiders box office continued to climb in the aftermath of Tony Awards, with the musical bringing in $1.4 million for the week ended July 14.
This is the fourth week in a row that the musical, which won the Tony for best musical on June 16, has broken the house record at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. Capacity for the show, which is based on the young adult novel by S.E. Hinton, has remained around 100 percent or above since the start of previews in March.
With the July 7 closing of Merrily We Roll Along, starring Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez, total Broadway grosses across the industry dropped by 7 percent. Tony-winner Jonathan Groff is set to star in a staged reading next month of a new musical about Bobby Darin, the 1950s-’60s-era singer who scored hits with “Mack the Knife,” “Dream Lover” and “Beyond The Sea,” Deadline has confirmed.
With an eye toward Broadway, Groff will perform the industry reading of Just In Time in New York next month. Alex Timbers will direct the reading, as he did in 2018 when he teamed with Groff on an early concert version of the musical at the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan.
The musical takes its name from the Jule Styne-Adolph Green-Betty Comden song “Just In Time,” which Darin, among many others, recorded.
Attached to produce for an eventual Broadway run are Tom Kirdahy and Robert Ahrens. The reading in New York will be staged under the auspices of the Arlington, Virginia, non-profit regional theater Signature Theatre.

Merrily We Roll Along closed out its Broadway run with a new high of $2.77 million, which the production says is the highest grossing week ever for any Stephen Sondheim musical on Broadway.
The revival, starring Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez, ended its run July 7, after opening at the Hudson Theatre in October 2023. The revival has continued to break box office records at the theater and has seen a particular rise in grosses in recent weeks, after the production won best revival of a musical at the June 16 Tony Awards, where both Radcliffe and Groff also took home trophies, and as it neared its closing date.
Capacity has been at 100 percent every week of run. And the average ticket price has also increased, alongside its popularity, to reach a new high of $357.94 in its final week.

A double-digit slip in the Nielsen ratings notwithstanding, the Tony Awards worked their magic at the box office, with this year’s winners, contenders and show-stealers reporting big increases in attendance and receipts.
Just a few examples: An Enemy of the People, Merrily We Roll Along and Stereophonic posted box office gains in the six figures.
In all, the 32 Broadway shows grossed $37,565,097 for the week ending June 23. That’s a 2% increase over the previous week, a more impressive bump than it seems at first glance: The previous week had 35 shows, including hefty money-makers Ben Platt: Live at the Palace, Uncle Vanya and Mother Play. The absence of those shows last week went a long way in explaining the 4% drop in attendance to 282,752.
Among the numbers:
An Enemy of the People, which starred the Tony-winning Jeremy Strong, broke its own house record at Circle in the Square, taking in $1,545,913 for its final week of performances,...

Netflix has a slew of shows that are coming to an end, which opens up a lot of pillars for a new line of content that Netflix must produce to get subscribers to its service. This has caused Netflix to invest a lot of money into newer projects, to develop new IPs. Merrily We Roll Along, the smash Broadway hit starring Tony-winners Jonathan Groff and Daniel Radcliffe and nominee Lindsay Mendez, is being professionally filmed by RadicalMedia, the same production company that proshot and produced Hamilton and Come From Away.
A production insider tells Deadline that producers are indeed filming the show, but couldn’t confirm future plans like a TV broadcast, streaming or even a theatrical release. Hamilton was intended for a theatrical release but went to Disney+ due to Covid. Come From Away streamed on Apple TV+.

On Sunday, the 77th annual Tony Awards were held, hosted by Broadway and film actress Ariana DeBose at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. The ceremony saw wins for Sarah Paulson, Jonathan Groff and Daniel Radcliffe. Several notable faces took the stage as presenters, including Angelina Jolie, Brooke Shields, Nick Jonas and even former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
This year’s nominations raised some skeptical responses over the omission of the fan-favorite revival of The Wiz and Appropriate‘s nomination for costume design. The ceremony was also deemed “dull” by many viewers citing numerous on-stage speech fumbles and a lack of stage presence from presenters and award winners.
Regardless, fans were excited to see their favorite faces take home their wins. Stereophonic and Alicia Keys‘ musical Hell’s Kitchen swept the categories with 13 nominations. Paulson returned to the stage after 13 years and snagged a win,...

Daniel Radcliffe stepped out in style at the 2024 Tony Awards on Sunday, wearing a custom violet-colored mohair tuxedo as he celebrated his first-ever nomination for best performance by an actor in a featured role in a musical.
The 34-year-old Harry Potter star earned the nod for his portrayal of Charley Kringas in the revival of Merrily We Roll Along alongside Lindsay Mendez and Jonathan Groff. His lavender tux from designer Todd Snyder was crafted in upstate New York.
Radcliffe’s girlfriend, Erin Darke, 39, complimented his look in a glittering sequined gown with intricate beading and an illusion neckline. She wore an updo hairstyle with parted bangs and berry-colored lips.
This Broadway season marked Radcliffe’s return to musical theater after previous stints in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying in 2011 and his debut in 2008’s Equus, which transferred from London’s West End.

On last night’s Tonys, the world outside the Kit Kat Club got its first glimpse at Eddie Redmayne’s take on the Emcee in the revival of Cabaret — dubbed Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club for its immersive elements — currently occupying Broadway’s August Wilson Theatre. Reaction to the interpretation has ranged from enraptured to bewildered.
The performance, which sees Redmayne contort like a broken marionette in a party hat, strays from previous incarnations of the character, who’s meant to evoke a kind of funhouse hedonism oblivious to the winds of Nazism gaining strength outside the cabaret doors.
There was Joel Grey’s original take (on Broadway in 1966 and reprised in Bob Fosse’s landmark 1972 film version), a Mephistophelian character in white makeup and a too-large tuxedo. Then Alan Cumming sexed up the role in a 1993 revival envisioned by Sam Mendes.
Redmayne’s take, steered by London director Rebecca Frecknall,...
The performance, which sees Redmayne contort like a broken marionette in a party hat, strays from previous incarnations of the character, who’s meant to evoke a kind of funhouse hedonism oblivious to the winds of Nazism gaining strength outside the cabaret doors.

Fans are still bummed out Netflix did not renew David Fincher’s Mindhunter series for a third season after Jonathan Groff’s amazing job playing Holden Ford. The gripping story of conversations with serial killers was also the selling point that got viewers hooked on the show.
Holt McCallany and Jonathan Groff in Mindhunter / Netflix
One of the attributes that made Mindhunter a successful one is the brilliance of Fincher’s creative vision. Everyone who has worked with the director knows they are always in good hands and they entrust the whole project to his judgment.

No awards show makes it to the end without a few surprises, and tonight’s Tony Awards on CBS had a whopper: It went off without a hitch.
The Pluto TV pre-show, not so much. But more on that in a bit.
With Ariana DeBose returning to host for the third time, the 77th Annual Tonys was like a how-to for awards shows, with nearly all of the performances by the Best Musical nominees (and the year’s Best Play winner Stereophonic) showcasing each production at its best. (Which one fell a bit short? Read on.)
DeBose kicked things off with a made-for-the-show musical number, sounding terrific even if a performance from one of the actual Broadway shows might have been a wiser option. DeBose has said this will be her final Tony hosting gig, at least for a while, and she’ll be missed: She knows how to hold the spotlight,...

There were a ton of “Hollywood names” at the 77th Tony Awards on Sunday night, which undoubtedly helped to elevate interest in a nationwide telecast that is always a bit of a tough sell, given that it celebrates shows that relatively few people outside — or even inside — the tri-state area have actually seen.
Among the A-listers on hand this year were Academy Award winner Ariana DeBose, returning as the host for the third time; presenters such as Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Hudson, Oscar winners both; performers including Alicia Keys, Jay Z, Pete Townshend and yet another Oscar winner, Eddie Redmayne; and worthy honorees like Jeremy Strong (best actor in a play for An Enemy of the People) and Sarah Paulson (best actress in a play for Appropriate), each of whom has an Emmy at home, and Daniel Radcliffe (best featured actor in a play for Merrily We Roll Along), the...

Jonathan Groff won at the 2024 Tony Awards, and his Merrily We Roll Along co-star couldn’t have been more supportive of him.
Groff had been overjoyed earlier in the show when Radcliffe won in the Featured Actor in a Musical category, and the Harry Potter alum reacted the same way when Groff won.
As Groff walked to the stage, he crossed paths with Radcliffe and they embraced each other.
“I grew up in a house surrounded by cornfields in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. I was raised by my parents, Jim and Julie Groff, and my brother David, and the three of them are sitting right there,” Groff said as he read his prepared speech from a piece of paper. “Thank you for letting me dress up like Mary Poppins when I was three. Thank you for letting me act out scenes from I Love Lucy on my 10th birthday. Thank you...
