Philip Gawthorne started his career as a playwright. He trained at the Royal Court Theatre and his plays have been performed throughout London and New York, at venues such as Atlantic Theater Studios, The Old Vic, The Soho, The Bush and The Hampstead, among many others.
A graduate of the elite BBC Writers Academy, Gawthorne wrote numerous TV drama episodes for the BBC, before moving to Los Angeles in 2013 after selling an original TV pilot to the cable network Starz.
He was nominated for a New York Innovative Theatre Award for his play 'Modern Life Is Rubbish'. The feature-film version, starring Josh Whitehouse, Freya Mavor and Ian Hart, premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and received an international theatrical release in 2018, distributed by Universal. The film also received a BAFTA nomination.
Gawthorne now has a number of feature projects in development, including the screen adaptation of Mark Millar's graphic novel 'Chrononauts' for Universal and Chris Morgan Productions, the film version of the classic detective series 'Kojak' for Universal and Vin Diesel, disaster movie 'Black Hole' for STX and director Brad Peyton, cerebral science-fiction remake 'Cubed' for Lionsgate, and period action epic 'World Breaker', co-written with acclaimed director William Eubank. Gawthorne recently worked (uncredited) for 20th Century Fox and Chernin, as production screenwriter on Eubank's science-fiction/horror film 'Underwater', starring Kristen Stewart and Vincent Cassel. He also features on the official 'Underwater' commentary, available on Blu-ray and iTunes.
