Early on in his highly personal documentary, filmmaker Ken August Meyer presents an intense close-up of his face staring directly into the camera. “I’m happy to be here to share this story. I’m Ken,” he says by way of introduction. “It’s nice to meet you. And don’t worry, it’s not contagious.”
What he’s referring to is the condition afflicting him, systemic scleroderma. It’s a life-threatening autoimmune disease that attacks the body’s connective tissues and internal organs, and there is no cure. His chronicling of the disease’s progression, and his finding comfort in the later artworks of Paul Klee, who suffered from the same condition — although it wasn’t diagnosed until after his death — forms the heart of the moving Angel Applicant, receiving its world premiere at SXSW (where it snagged the top doc prize).

The Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon prequel will shoot in New Zealand.
Film Auckland chairman Alex Lee confirmed that The Weinstein Company's martial arts film The Green Destiny will take advantage of the country's newly increased production incentives.
He told Radio New Zealand that the changes to the country's Large Budget Screen Production Grant subsidy - which now allows major productions to claim back up to 25% of their budget - was instrumental in getting the film greenlit.
Michelle Yeoh will reprise her role as Yu Shu Lien in the movie, with Donnie Yen signed on as Silent Wolf.
James Cameron's Avatar sequels will also take advantage of New Zealand's incentives.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon II: The Green Destiny will be directed by Woo-ping Yuen, who was the fight choreographer on the original 2000 movie.
