Was eight months pregnant with her daughter Wren when she went on maternity leave from filming the seventh season of Call the Midwife (2012).

Has been in a relationship with Jack Ashton since April 2016, having met on the set of Call the Midwife (2012). Their respective characters, Nurse Trixie Franklin and Rev. Tom Hereward, were engaged in the fourth season of the series before calling it was called off. They began a real off-screen relationship while in South Africa filming Christmas Special (2016).

Gave birth to her first child at age 33, a daughter, Wren Ivy Ashton, three weeks early on September 28, 2017. Child's father is her boyfriend, Jack Ashton.

Gave birth to her second child at age 37, a daughter Lark Ashton, two weeks early on November 16, 2021. Child's father is her boyfriend, Jack Ashton.
