Carlo Velayo is a Film Independent Spirit Award-nominated Producer, a Berlinale VFF Talent Highlight Awardee, and was the inaugural SFFILM New American Fellow.
Carlo has produced two narrative features, including Isabel Sandoval's Lingua Franca (Venice Days 2019), which was released theatrically in France through JHR Films and is available on Netflix North America through Ava DuVernay's Array Releasing. The film was nominated for the Film Independent John Cassavetes Award in 2021. Carlo made his debut as a p.g.a. Producer and 1st A.D. on Jessica M. Thompson's The Light of the Moon, which received the Audience Award for Narrative Feature Competition at SXSW in 2017.
Carlo is a Producer on Isabel Sandoval's fourth feature film, Tropical Gothic, which the pair launched at the Locarno Open Doors Hub in 2020. In March 2021, they pitched the project at the Berlinale Talent Project Market, where Carlo received the VFF Talent Highlight Award. In June 2022, Michael B. Clark and Alex Turtletaub boarded the project as Producers for Big Beach (Little Miss Sunshine, The Farewell, Loving).
In the non-fiction space, Carlo was an Associate Producer on Cheryl Furjanic's Emmy-nominated film Back on Board: Greg Louganis (2014). In 2016, Carlo spent two months filming at the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) and is Senior Producer on Emmy Award-winning, Filipino-American Michele Josue's Netflix Original documentary series Happy Jail (2019), which is now available in 190 countries. Carlo is collaborating again with Michele on the documentary feature Nurse Unseen, which looks at the history and humanity of Filipino nurses in the United States.
As co-founder of 7107 Entertainment and Significant Other Productions, Carlo is developing a slate of film and TV projects. He has secured the option to adapt Carlos Bulosan's autobiographical novel, America is in the Heart, into a limited TV series. He is attached as Producer on narrative features Baptism, Sprout and Devices, as well as the documentary project Filipinas (Working Title).
Carlo is an alumnus of the University of Technology, Sydney, where he completed a BA in Communications (Media Arts and Production) and a BA in International Studies (Heritage Major). He also holds an MA in Liberal Arts (Cultural and Environmental Heritage) from the Australian National University. Born in the Philippines and raised in Australia, he is based in New York City.
