Sundance was abuzz with news of Spike Lee‘s new film, Red Hook Summer, and for good reason. After a nearly four-year hiatus from film making, he unveiled his new joint at the festival, an ambitious project about a teenager forced to spend a summer with his religious grandfather. Since its premiere,Variance Films picked up the film, cut it down 14 minutes and scheduled it for release on August 10th, giving the director’s fans a reason to look forward to summer’s end.
A poster for the film was released today, and it looks familiar – its image harkens back to a still we revealed last December. But at least its existence shows that Red Hook Summer is on its way to the summer release Lee was shooting for. See image and synopsis below:

Oldboy is still on the horizon, but Spike Lee will be making his return to narrative filmmaking a little earlier, with next year’s Red Hook Summer. Many got excited when it was revealed that the movie would have the writer and director reprising the role of Mookie from what’s arguably his greatest work, Do the Right Thing. Although he seemingly isn’t the main character — the story reportedly centers on “a adult from Atlanta who comes and spends the summer in Red Hook section of Brooklyn, NY” — going back to his magnum opus is an interesting idea on its own. But, other than the fact that it opens next summer, we know very little at the moment.
BlackFilm has managed to uncover some casting information on the project; the lineup includes Clarke Peters, Nate Parker, Turron Kofi Alleyne, Samantha Ivers, Limary Agosto, Heather Simms, and Kalon Jackson. Peters,...

Spike Lee has used Twitter to announce that his most recent and secretive project, "Red Hook Summer", is scheduled to hit next Summer.
The film was shot over a few weeks back in July & August and all that's really known is that Lee will reprise the role of Mookie which he played in "Do The Right Thing", and the film itself follows a guy who spends his summer in the Red Hook area of Brooklyn.
Turron Kofi Alleyne, Samantha Ivers, Limary Agosto, Heather Simms, Kalon Jackson, Nate Parker and Clarke Peters star in the project.

It’s certainly a cause for celebration when you have two Spike Lee joints to look forward to. Although most of the media attention has been focused on Lee‘s upcoming remake of Park Chan-Wook‘s sensational Oldboy, avid fans of the director may have noticed he has another film in production. You would be forgiven for not knowing much about it because, well, not much is known about it.
In fact, all that is known is that it shall be titled Red Hook Summer and that the story centres on an Atlantan resident spends the summer in the Red Hook neighbourhood of Brooklyn, New York. Oh, and Spike Lee shall be reprising his as Mookie from his classic 80s film about racial tension, Do The Right Thing. Interested yet? I thought so.
Every little tidbit of information we get is priceless, as far as I’m concerned. So today...

Fortunes can turn around fast in filmmaking. Earlier this year, Spike Lee was complaining about the difficulty financing new films. Then only weeks later he was kicking off the shoot for a film called Red Hook Summer, and then he was signed to direct a new version of Oldboy, possibly with Josh Brolin starring. Most of what we know about Red Hook Summer comes from one early report and Spike Lee's own Twitter account . We know that the film is in post-production now, and that he shot it on the Sony F-3. Most interesting to many will be that the film will see Lee reprising his Do the Right Thing role, Mookie. (Pictured above.) See the first promo image for the film after the break. The photo below went out today via Twitter, and it announces the film as a summer 2012 release. Spike Lee wrote, directed, and appears as Mookie.
