The Stx Films pic is on its way to becoming the entertainment company’s first No. 1 debut with an estimated $19.5 million from 3,080 North American sites, knocking Warner Bros.’ “Aquaman” into the second place slot. Frankensteined together from the stiff corpses of a dozen smarter movies, “Replicas” is a cloning thriller so carelessly stupid that it often feels like a mad science experiment gone wrong. In fact, the film is such an awkward chimera of stolen ideas that the premise alone violates the basic laws of screenwriting, and probably also those of nature itself.

William Foster is the top neuroscientist at Puerto Rico’s Bionyne research facility, where he’s inventing a way to download a human brain into a synthetic robot body. That’s a difficult task, and it’s made a whole lot harder by William’s impatient boss (the ever-reliable John Ortiz), who gets all kinds of huffy when he learns that his star employee may not achieve the greatest technological achievement in all of history — and effectively kill God — in time for the company’s next earnings report.

It’s not clear how far in the future Replicas is set since it takes place in a Puerto Rico that looks (from what little we see of it) remarkably pristine and free of the ongoing aftermath of Hurricane Maria. But that’s just one of the many vagaries that plague this threadbare little film, which essentially takes place in two locations and is packed with enough pseudo-scientific nonsense to sink even cheesy old TV shows like Lost in Space or Time Tunnel.

To be clear, we’re not sticklers for absolute scientific accuracy in our science fiction, as long as it makes reasonable sense and everything else is working. But Replicas doesn’t have that luxury. Keanu Reeves stars as William Foster, a brilliant scientist working for a stock biotech firm on...

How late can a thriller spring a plot twist that at least partially compensates for all the cavernous plot holes, risible dialogue, and ludicrously illogical behavior that precede it? Probably not nearly as late as the makers of “Replicas” wait before introducing a third-act reveal that brazenly acknowledges just how silly things have been up to that point. By the time director Jeffrey Nachmanoff and screenwriter Chad St. John tap the protagonist played by Keanu Reeves on the shoulder and make him painfully aware of what he’s heretofore been too blind to see, most ticket buyers will have stopped caring — or retreated to the parking lot. And it’s even more likely that home viewers will have already flipped the channel, or preemptively ejected the DVD for a quick return to the Redbox kiosk.

Entertainment Studios has set a January 11 wide release for Replicas, the Keanu Reeves movie it snapped up at the 2017 Toronto Film Festival for $4M.

Chicago – When a revenge film gets a bit stale, as they tend to do, the best way to pass the time is to start counting how many people are indiscriminately killed. “Peppermint,” which has the former “Alias” star Jennifer Garner going back to an action mode, had 36 (give or take) quality kills, with the last one taking the longest between executions.

Garner is actually not that bad in the film, she is game, but the script lets her down and the scenario seemed easier to settle than what was on screen. The director of the film is Pierre Morel, who did the first “Taken” with Liam Neeson in 2008. He hasn’t learned anything new on this revenge spin, and the story also contains many stereotypes having to do with a vague drug cartel. Since 1974, there have been dozens of riffs on “Death Wish” featuring men driven to violent acts of vengeance (including a tepid remake earlier this year), so there’s no reason there shouldn’t be one about a woman. But “Peppermint” is in such a hurry to deliver the payoff of watching an aggrieved mother exact her revenge on the drug lord who killed her husband and daughter that it completely ignores the much bigger and more interesting story of exactly how she prepared for that showdown.

The formidable Jennifer Garner has already shouldered her fair share of badass characters, so the toughness required of her character here is entirely believable. But a script that seems to have been assembled by algorithm, plus routine direction by “Taken” helmer Pierre Morel, hobbles what might have been a moderately rousing (if in no way original) transformation story.

Lionsgate has scooped up worldwide distribution rights to Peppermint, a female-centric action project that has Pierre Morel, the helmer behind action hit Taken, on board to direct.

Lakeshore Entertainment brought the project to Cannes. Chad St. John, a co-writer on the Gerard Butler actioner London Has Fallen, penned the script for the project, which will be produced by Lakeshore’s Tom Rosenberg, Gary Lucchesi, Richard Wright and Eric Reid.

A couple years ago, John Wick surprised audiences when it hit theaters. This was a film that had its trailer released a mere month before its theatrical debut. This would normally spell bad news, but that wasn’t the case for John Wick. Instead, audiences were treated to a lean, mean action flick with just enough plot and story keep things going, but not too much that it slowed down the pacing.

Of course, with the film and its sequel doing so well, it was only a matter of time before we’d get more similar films. This latest “copycat” (I put it in quotations because this is not necessarily a bad thing) comes from Taken director Pierre Morel, and is called Peppermint.

This year’s John Wick inspired female kick-ass action thriller, Atomic Blonde, seems to have awoken something in the male-centric world of Hollywood, the has met with positive reactions without even hitting the big screens yet but already Taken director, Pierre Morel has signed up to take the helm in the next female lead actioner, Peppermint.

The simple synopsis for the film reads; Peppermint is a revenge story centering on a young mother who finds herself with nothing to lose and is now going to take from her rivals the very life they stole from her.

Morel signed on the dotted line after a ferocious bidding war for the rights amongst the independent and major studio’s which eventually saw Lakeshore get their hands on the project which they hope to get production up and running by the autumn. A female lead has yet to be announced,...

Pierre Morel, the director of Taken, is set to direct a female action film. THR reports the script for the film is being written by Chad St. John, who also wrote the action film London Has Fallen. The film, titled Peppermint, is about a young mother who seeks revenge on the people who took her life from her.

No word on who is set to play the lead, but the film is being pitched as a "female John Wick" which sounds like something everyone would get behind. It seems like we are going to be getting a lot of female action films in the near future. Whether or not it lives up to that title remains to be seen. ...

Vin Diesel has given fans their first (brief) look at “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage.” Diesel posted a teaser for the upcoming action sequel to his official Facebook page, which shows the supposedly dead Cage returning to his extreme sports ways to help take down a new enemy. The full trailer will get released on Tuesday. D.J. Caruso is directing from a script by Chad St. John and F. Scott Frazier. Joe Roth will produce with Diesel, among others, while Revolution executives Vince Totino and Scott Hemming will serve as executive producers. Replicas, a philosophically metaphysical science fiction technological thriller starring Keanu Reeves (the John Wick films), Alice Eve (Iron Fist) and Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley), looked like an intriguing genre offering when it first blipped the industry radar. However, while the project went into production in summer of 2016, and even released a trailer last year, the movie went M.I.A., and – for reasons unknown – was left in project purgatory… until now.

While Lion will see a release this fall, the latter, Mary Magdalene, has just gotten some great news as Chiwetel Ejiofor is in talks to star opposite Rooney Mara, along with Joaquin Phoenix as Jesus Christ, Deadline reports. Ejiofor would play one of Jesus’ 12 apostles, Peter, who was also his lead disciple and denied Jesus three times before being forgiven after the Resurrection. Mary Magdalene is being produced by See-Saw films, with a script penned by Helen Edmund and Philippa Goslett. Before then, Ejiofor will play a role in Marvel’s Doctor Strange.
