The 2012 epic black comedy crime drama featured Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Faisal Khan. He portrayed the second on-screen son of Manoj Bajpayee (Sardar Khan) and Richa Chadha (Nagma Khatoon). His eccentric performance landed him the Special Jury Award at the 60th National Film Awards 2012.
But the beginning was quite rocky for Nawazuddin Siddiqui. He recalled getting a ten-page script from director Anurag Kashyap while appearing on Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast on YouTube. “I wanted to give it my all.

The U.S. remake of "The Office" is one of the most popular television shows ever — you can basically watch the whole series via memes/gifs. It's surprising, then, that 10 years on from the finale, there hasn't been a spin-off. Since the original show's 201 episodes remain absurdly popular on streaming, perhaps NBC doesn't see a need for more when the fans are satisfied with rewatching ad infinitum. However, Leslie David Baker tried to get a spin-off made about his character, and he turned to those fans to make it happen.
In 2020, Baker and his business partner Sardar Khan started a Kickstarter for "Uncle Stan." The premise would be that Stanley, now retired from Dunder Mifflin and living in Florida, gets a call from his nephew Lucky, who runs a motorcycle/flower shop. If that sounds like an odd business to you, you're not alone; the shop is failing, so "Uncle...

Leslie David Baker announced that he is refunding all donations sent by fans for a proposed spinoff centered around his Office character Stanley Hudson.
In an Instagram post shared Thursday, the actor revealed plans to refund the money received via a 2020 Kickstarter campaign for the proposed project called Uncle Stan. The show was aimed to center on a retired Stanley getting a call from his nephew who asks for help with his two kids and running his motorcycle/flower shop. The campaign launched at the time with a crowdfunding goal of $300,000.
“We apologize about the delay in updates,” Baker wrote in a shared statement with his business partner, Sardar Khan. “We have been working behind the scenes to get everything on track and rewards fulfilled. Mumbai, Sep 5 (Ians) Pankaj Tripathi turned 44 on Saturday. The versatile actor has explored every medium as an actor -- theatre, television, films and Ott -- and has made a mark in a relatively short span of time.
On the occasion of his birthday, Ians looks at five much appreciated performance of Tripathi that can counted as milestones in his career so far.
Gangs Of Wasseypur
Tripathi played Sultan Qureshi, one of the big enemies of protagonist Sardar Khan, played by Manoj Bajpayee, in the two-part Anurag Kashyap saga released in 2012. While the film was well received and many of its dialogues became memorable, it was a particular witty line of Sultan that endeared Tripathi to the masses: "Yeh Wasseypur hai, yahaan kabootar bhi ek pankh se udta hai, aur doosre se izzat bachata hai."

Before I watched the film, I had heard comments like “Indian epic,” “one of the best Asian films ever produced,” “a true masterpiece” and other similar characterizations, which usually make me suspicious, to say the least. However, in this case, every dithyramb was absolutely true as “Gangs of Wasseypur” is one of the best gangster films ever produced.
The script, which stretches over 5 hours, tells the story of the family of Khans over 5 generations and their adventures in the city of Wasseypur, where mafia wars and lawlessness seem to be the rule. Starting in the 40s with Shahid Khan, the story then moves on Sardar Khan, who found his apogee in the 70s, and ends with one of his sons, Faizal, and Definite, Sardar’s son from a different woman. Throughout all these years, the archenemy of the family remains Ramadhir, a corrupt official who starts as a trade union...

There is a virus sweeping the boardrooms of film studios throughout Hollywood. It is a bitter, poisonous little blighter that sucks the joy and originality out of anything it touches. It is a self-serving, self-aware, tyrannical strain of social profiling. And it is quickly dominating the way in which films are conceived and made. It is eating away at filmmakers, and rapidly controlling the output of every major studio in modern cinema. It is known only as the ‘Fanboy’ plague.
In recent weeks, Fanboys have come under fire for their continual outcries against directors. These rabid moviegoers are baying for the blood of anyone who fails to meet their expectations of how certain characters should be “faithfully” depicted on film. Some even go so far as to claim that Hollywood is “mauling” their favourite characters and superheroes. ‘Man of Steel’ is the most current casualty of this. Does it really...

Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur, opens with what I assume will lead to the conclusion of part 2, a gang out to kill a rival gang member, completely destroying his house, and they do not stop till they assume everyone inside is dead. This is 2004. Flash back to pre-Independence India, a man is banished from his village and then later killed by the man he works for. These are the two events which lead his son, Sardar Khan (Manoj Bajpai), on his path of vengeance, and to become the most feared man in Wasseypur.

The 43-year-old received widespread acclaim for his portrayal of ganglord Sardar Khan in Anurag Kashyap's Gangs of Wasseypur and believes the film, which was part of the official selection at the 65th Cannes International Film Festival, gave him greater exposure. Speaking to Pti, Bajpayee said: "I think somewhere Anurag Kashyap is my ticket to international films. I keep pestering him to get me scripts. I have got offers and that came through Anurag.

One of the best aspects of 2012 was the sheer range of films that were released, from the masala heavies by Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, and Ajay Devgn, to the surprises in Kahaani, Vicky Donor, and Gangs of Wasseypur. While the “100-crore club” was given much hullabaloo in the newspapers, it was the content of these films that made a Barfi! part of this club. The films were packed with impressive ensembles and featured some standout performances from the unlikeliest of actors who went that extra mile to prove their detractors wrong. Yet it was a stellar year for actors who brought some brilliant performances in some of the best films of the year.

How fitting, in a year that has seen a restored version of Sergio Leone’s embattled, multigenerational gangster epic Once Upon a Time in America, that a new, Leone-influenced masterpiece from India arrives on North American shores. Gangs of Wasseypur, a five-hour, two-part, wildly blood-drenched saga is, without question, one of the must-sees at the Toronto International Film Festival. Director Anurag Kashyap’s work is also – whether taken together, or separately – among 2012’s best.
The first installment opens on a television screen, and a subtitle telling us the soundtrack is “[Popular Indian soap theme music].” The serene scene erupts with gunfire for a remarkably appropriate start; Gangs is, in a sense, one long soap opera, with the occasional glossiness quickly ripped apart by bullets. The gunfight is kinetic and explosive, and completely chaotic; we have no sense of who is who, who is “good” or “bad,” or why any of this is occurring. Confused? Don...

Part 1 of director Anurag Kashyap’s sprawling family saga of power and revenge did two very important things: it introduced the character of Faizal Khan (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), and it left me with a definite appetite to see Part 2. I had the chance to do just that a screening held in advance of the presentation of both parts at Tiff 2012.
Part 2 begins where Part 1 left off, with the death of Sardar Khan (Manoj Bajpai). Part 2 sees his eldest son, Danish (Vineet Kumar), begin to take over the reins, and exact punishment for his father’s assassination, but he soon is taken down by Sultan Qureshi (Pankaj Tripathi). Thus it falls to the perpetually stoned Faizal to step up and exact revenge – a role that no one, not even his mother Nagma (“Look at your eyes, dead with drugs,” she tells him), feels he is fit for.
And it’s true – the days pass,...

Among all of India’s filmmakers today Anurag Kashyap is perhaps the only one whose films insist on being watched in a multiplex. Every other filmmaker’s efforts only merit DVD viewing. Since I have been so drawn to his films that I have journeyed to see them, I was quite excited when Gangs of Wasseypur was announced. I then took stock of what his films meant to me but, curiously enough, while Black Friday (2004) still largely remained in my memory, I retained only a few scattered images from Dev D (2009) and Gulaal (2009). The ‘avant-garde’ effort No Smoking (2007), of course, always struck me as babble but was there something lacking in the other two films that I recollected them so little?
Anurag Kashyap’s chief strength is his sharp eye for the milieu but his films also seem curiously blank – as if there was little else underneath surface. Since his style is so visceral,...

Anurag Kashyap with his cast and crew recently celebrated the box office success of Gangs of Wasseypur. Since its release on 22nd June, the film has earned Rs 23 crore from India alone. With a total budget of around Rs 18.4 crore and the second part still to come, you would definitely call that a winning proposition.
Kashyap has announced the release of part 2 on 8th August and its trailer is just as intriguing and exciting. First previewed at the recent 65th Cannes International Film Festival and shown back to back with part 1, in part 2 the focus shifts to Manoj Bajpai’s son Faisal Khan played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Gangs Of Wasseypur opened to mixed reviews, but the makers of the film are ready with the second installment of the two part film. However, they are skeptical of the release date. The reason is quiet obvious. Gangs Of Wasseypur part one was story of Sardar Khan and Ramadir Singh based on Shafi Khan and Surya Dev Singh in real life and both of them being dead for long time. So in a manner it didn't affect anyone else's life immediately and there was no fear of protest. While part two is essentially the story of Sardar Khan's son Faisal Khan, who is Faheem Khan in real life. Faheem Khan is alive and in jail of Dhanbad and also rules most of Wasseypur and Dhanbad mafia. Insiders say that the makers are trying to have a dialogue and resolve all issues before its out of the way and becomes difficult to handle.

The raw and feisty Nagma Khatoon in Gangs of Wasseypur played by Richa Chadda perfectly complemented her gangster husband Sardar Khan (Manoj Bajpai). In her second ever role, Chadda got noticed by the industry and reviewers alike. She doesn’t want to limit herself to offbeat films, but says that ‘masala’ films aren’t her cup of tea either. Richa Chadda in a conversation with Nandita Dutta:
How do you look back at the experience of shooting Gangs of Wasseypur?
It was the most fun experience of my life. I had never imagined I would get such a big break. The film went to Cannes, it won acclaim there. Now it’s doing well here. I am getting good reviews. It’s like a dream come true for any newcomer.
How was it working with Anurag Kashyap?
It’s anybody’s dream to work with Anurag. He is very polite and warm person.

Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur is a magnificent saga and a visual delight! For a revenge-drama spanning decades and chronicling generations, it does extremely well and engages the audience. The hero (here antihero) of the first part of the film is Sardar Khan (Manoj Bajpai) whose mission in life is to seek revenge from Ramadhir Singh (Tigmanshu Dhulia) who had killed his father. In that sense, it is a typical revenge story but the sheer magnitude of the tale and the settings make it appear grand. After a lengthy introduction of his ancestors through voiceovers and archival videos, the film settles down to tell the story of Sardar Khan and his revenge.
The film is full of gut-wrenching violence, bloodbath and expletives. Despite that,...

Stars: Manjoj Bajpai, Richa Chaddha, Reemma Sen, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Tigmanshu Dhulia | Written by: Akhilesh Jaiswal, Anurag Kashyap, Sachin K. Ladia, Syed Zeeshan Qadri | Directed by: Anurag Kashyap
This year’s opening night film of the London Indian Film Festival was Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur, part one of a violent revenge story set in North India. It also screened at Cannes earlier this year, in the Directors Fortnight.
The film opens with what I assume will lead to the conclusion of part 2, a gang out to kill a rival gang member, completely destroying his house, and they do not stop till they assume everyone inside is dead. This is 2004. Flash back to pre-Independence India, a man is banished from his village and then later killed by the man he works for. These are the two events which lead his son, Sardar Khan (Manoj Bajpai), on his path of vengeance,...

The 2012 edition of the London Indian Film Festival opens this Wednesday, with the UK premiere of Gangs of Wasseypur.
Launched back in 2010, the aim of the new festival was to get more independent Indian films shown in the UK, from all over the country, n0t just Bollywood, with particular focus on younger filmmakers. In their second year, they managed to double in size, attracting over 2500 people to their various screening and events, as well as the works of well-known and respected directors such as Anurag Kashyap, Shekhar Kapur, Rituparno Ghosh, and Ketan Mehta.
This year’s opening film, Gangs of Wasseypur, from director Anurag Kashyap, screened in the Director’s Fortnight section of this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The film follows Sardar Khan (Manoj Bajpai), who in avenging his father, becomes the most feared man in the town of Wasseypur. This is only part one of the story,...

Gangs of Wasseypur – Anurag Kashyap
Buzz: Excluding the Main Comp, there’ll be a dash of curry all along the Croisette this year as India’s New Wave is taking over. Ashim Ahluwalia‘s Miss Lovely (Un Certain Regard), Vasan Bala’s Peddlers (Critics’ Week) and this year’s record holder for the longest running time (it isn’t Sergio Leone’s extended cut of Once Upon a Time in America), in Anurag Kashyap (That Girl In Yellow Boots). A ballsy, uncompromising film with a run time of 5h20 minutes might rewrite some of Bollywood’s tired rules – we’d be definitely interested in seeing at some point in time.
Gist: Wasseypur, India. The story of vengeance between two families that spans three generations. Shahid Khan loots British trains and rules over the Ramadhir Sing clan. He becomes an outcast and must work in Ramadhir Singh’s coal mines. Shahid’s son,...

I have scheduled this first part of my Cannes 2012 Preview to publish while I am somewhere over the middle of the United States, on my way to New York where I will connect with a flight heading into Nice. I'll be arriving in Cannes some time around 1 Pm Cet and my third straight journey to the Cannes Film Festival will begin, an experience that has easily become the #1 highlight of my year when it comes to covering movies. As hard as I have to work to cover the festival each year, it is absolutely worth it and based on the selection this year it looks like it will be just as fascinating. To begin, the festival runs from May 16-27, but I will only be in town through the morning of the 24th. As a result, two films that probably would have made my top ten most anticipated movies list won't,...
