Picking the best episodes of FX’s “What We Do in the Shadows” is kind of like… well, like picking your favorite character on “What We Do in the Shadows.” Or your favorite guest star. Or your favorite aspect of the series created by Jemaine Clement and based on the film he made with Taika Waititi in 2014; it’s just wrong, impossible, unnatural — like vampires themselves, some might argue.
For the IndieWire team, this masochistic exercise was born from our denial that the series from showrunner Paul Simms will end its run with Season 6, which premiered on October 21 with three episodes. Update: Soon after this story was published, a source reached out to Variety to confirm that “Daisy Jones and the Six” will not be getting a Season 2 because “it was always planned as a limited series.”
Despite the success of “Daisy Jones & the Six,” star Riley Keough says the band isn’t getting back together anytime soon.
Despite fans hoping — and demanding — a second season of the Prime Video miniseries adaptation of Tara Jenkin Reid’s best-selling novel, Keough tells me, “I would love to but I don’t know if it’s in the cards…I haven’t heard anything.”
The series followed Daisy Jones (Keough) and her bandmates as they make their way through the Los Angeles music scene of the 1970s. The series premiered just over a year ago to positive reviews. Keough and Morrone earned Emmy nominations as did the show for outstanding limited or anthology series.

The new Hulu series Under the Bridge is infuriating. That’s not to say the series is not well done or crafted—in fact, far from it. This is bold storytelling that challenges the viewer to rethink their misconceptions. The result is appointment-viewing television that, by the end of the series, showcases some uncommonly powerful performances.
No, it’s infuriating because of what transpires from “actual” events. It’s tragic and horrific, and words cannot adequately describe the atrocities that occurred in the small, picturesque seaside town in British Columbia, Alberta, Canada. Under the Bridge is where the key players wish the story stayed, never seeing the light of day.
Under the Bridge follows the heartbreaking story of Reena Virk (newcomer Vritika Gupta), a 14-year-old high school student in Saanich. Born in a proud East Indian and devout Jehovah’s Witness family, Reena is rebelling against her tight-knit community. Reena...

With a fresh Leading Actress Oscar nomination for the role of Mollie Kyle in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Lily Gladstone is next set to enter sci-fi territory with upcoming movie The Memory Police—a move that will also reunite her with Scorsese, set to executive produce.
“It’s on an unnamed island at an unnamed place, unnamed time,” Gladstone said of the new film, during a Q&a following a Killers of the Flower Moon screening in LA on Sunday. “So it takes place nowhere and therefore everywhere.”
The Memory Police will be directed by Reed Morano, with a script from Charlie Kaufman, adapted from the Yōko Ogawa novel of the same name.
“The adaptation is done by Charlie Kaufman,” Gladstone continued, “so it’s labeled as a sci-fi, but in the way that [Kaufman’s previous films] Eternal Sunshine [of the Spotless Mind] or Synecdoche [New York] was a sci-fi. It...

This article contains spoilers for What We Do In The Shadows season 5 episode 10.
There may be more to the title of What We Do in the Shadows’ season 5 finale than meets the eye. Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) makes some major changes in “Exit Interview,” and Colin Robinson’s (Mark Proksch) questioning means more than just how much the Staten Island vampires will have to pay his successor. The familiar and bodyguard with the Van Helsing DNA makes a choice, but now he has to live with it until he dies a natural death.
What’s Up With Guillermo’s Beard?
Vampires are immortal, spending their nights eternally frozen at the moment of death. They no longer breathe; they only consume blood, they don’t pump it; all their bodily functions cease. In Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire novel, Claudia rebels against her vampiric nature, defiantly cutting off her hair...

"You used to think I was the funniest person in the world..." Variance Films has unveiled an official trailer for the indie comedy The Adults, which initially premiered at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival earlier in the year. It's also playing at the Tribeca Film Festival next in June before opening later in August. The second feature film from filmmaker Dustin Guy Defa after Person to Person, which also starred Michael Cera. The plan to make a trip back home as short as possible begins to unravel as Eric finds himself struggling with balancing the challenging relationship with his two sisters and his addiction to a local poker game. A film about not wanting to grow up. Berlinale describes it as "a shrewd study of the pitiless condition known as adulthood." Starring Michael Cera as Eric, with Hannah Gross, Sophia Lillis, Wavyy Jonez, Anoop Desai, Kyra Tantao, Kiah McKirnan, & Simon Kim.

It should be one of the most famous TV casting stories out there. Two days before production began on “What We Do in the Shadows,” Harvey Guillen, now known for playing the vampires’ human servant Guillermo, wasn’t in pre-production — in fact, he hadn’t even been cast.
“It was Martin Luther King weekend, on a Sunday, and I knew they started production that Tuesday,” Guillén told IndieWire over Zoom. “I booked it on a Sunday afternoon, through Taika [Waititi] and Jemaine [Clement]. I had to call my agents and tell them that I booked it — they didn’t even call them, they called me directly and one day later I was in a fitting and the next day I was on set.”
Guillen was one of the only actors auditioned from the United States, the other being contenders for Mark Proksch’s role as energy vampire Colin Robinson. But when a...

As the old saying goes, you know it’s a great season of TV when vampire partygoers playing hot potato with Sofia Coppola’s decapitated head doesn’t even rank as the most memorable scene.
“We got lucky,” showrunner and executive producer Paul Simms said of casting the Oscar-winning writer in the cold open of Episode 9, “Freddie,” along with her husband and lead singer of Phoenix, Thomas Mars. “They love the show. Both of them are big comedy fans in a way you wouldn’t expect.”
To start the scene, Coppola and Mars are seated with fellow indie director Jim Jarmusch at Nadja’s, a vampire nightclub named after its founder/owner, Nadja (Natasia Demetriou). Looking over the menu, Coppola inquires about the 5,000 “celebrity special,” and — as is fitting for the filmmaker — she’s shown, not told,...

In any given week, the FX vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows is so explosively funny that it almost feels like every other TV comedy should give up and consider a new career in accordion sales. Some weeks, though, Shadows is even funnier than that. The latest episode, “The Grand Opening,” is one of those special examples. It is not a format-breaking installment like that one that introduced regular human bartender Jackie Daytona, but rather an episode where all three subplots fully exploit the comic potential of the...

Ask me to describe my sense of humor and I can answer in six words: “What We Do in the Shadows.”
While I have a deep affection for the feel-good Emmy champ “Ted Lasso,” which makes me chuckle and cringe, the supernatural mockumentary about vampiric roommates living the undead lifestyle in Staten Island makes me laugh out loud and snort milk out my nose. It isn’t pretty.

‘What We Do In The Shadows’: Former ‘American Idol’ Finalist Anoop Desai Joins Season 4 As Recurring
Exclusive: Former American Idol finalist Anoop Desai will play a major recurring role in the fourth season of What We Do in the Shadows, appearing in six of 10 episodes.
FX’s hit comedy series, based on the 2014 film by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, documents the nightly exploits of vampire roommates Nandor (Kayvan Novak), Laszlo (Matt Berry), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) and Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) as they navigate the modern world of Staten Island with the help of their human familiar, Guillermo (Harvey Guillén).
In the shocking Season 3 finale, airing last October, Nandor, Guillermo and Nadja left Staten Island to go their separate ways while Laszlo stayed home to care for the creature that clawed its way out of the chest cavity of the deceased Colin Robinson — aka Baby Colin. With Season 17 of “American Idol” coming to a close on May 19 with Alejandro Aranda, Laine Hardy and Madison VanDenburg as the final three, it has a good chance of being considered to be among one of the best seasons ever. But is it The best? That is yet to be determined. Certainly all three contestants have grown as vocalists and entertainers each and every week, especially on Sunday’s second-to-last show. But it is a little too early to see how No. 17 stacks ups with these four stellar seasons from the past.

After a so-so revival last year when ABC took over “American Idol,” most fans are in agreement that the talent on display on Season 17 is a giant leap for singing kind. The show overall seems to be more entertaining. Yes, judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan are never going to be as scathingly funny as Simon Cowell in his snide heyday. But their personalities and musical knowledge complement each other and all three seem quite genuine in their quest to help the contestants to up their games.
Very early in this current edition of the show, the words “best season ever” were uttered. It is all subjective, of course, but with just one more episode and the three-hour finale left, No. 17 could go down in “Idol’ ‘history talent-wise once a winner is crowned. Of course, factoring into that assessment will be the winner’s post-show success as well.

There’s this weird part of the week — from Friday morning till Monday evening — when not a single major TV network airs a reality singing competition. It’s terrible, I know, but it also gives me a lot of time to ponder American Idol history. (Everyone does this in their free time, yes?) And my latest flight of Idol fancy got me mulling this question: Was Season 11′s Top 10 the strongest — top to bottom — in show history? Let’s examine:
For starters, I’d automatically rule out the five seasons with three or more Top 10 contestants who probably wouldn’t have outlasted Season 11′s No.

American Idol shook things up by taking its auditions to the open water — or more specifically, to the U.S.S. Midway in San Diego Harbor — for a special Sunday-night episode. But there were plenty of constants, too: Producers continued the Season 11 trend of de-emphasizing joke auditions; Jennifer Lopez continued to champion the combination of poofy shorts and high heels; and Randy Jackson was there.

Regardless of your contestant allegiance heading into the American Idol Top 3 results-show telecast, there were reasons to celebrate by the time the credits stopped rolling and the season finale of [cue imitation of Fox voiceover guy] Bohhhhhhhnzzzz [end imitation of Fox voiceover guy] began.
Fans of country music, the vitality of youth, plaid shirts, denim jackets, sparkly cowboy boots, the Make a Wish for Nigel Lythgoe Foundation, and the act of locking them doors and turning the lights down low had to be psyched to learn that the Season 10 finale will be a battle between 17-year-old Scotty McCreery and 16-year-old Lauren Alaina, the youngest teen-vs.-teen finale in the history of the franchise.

At the end of American Idol‘s Top 5 performance show, I wasn’t sure whether I should pick up my phone to text-message votes on behalf of Haley Reinhart or use it to dial 911. On one hand, I wanted to reward Haley for getting up on the Idol stage and delivering the single best musical moment of Season 10 — and a second performance that would probably rank only a few slots behind. Conversely, though, I had just witnessed the judges’ panel committing criminal acts of foolery, vandalism, and perjury — and I wanted them hurled headlong into Reality TV Prison to rot...

The role call of seventh-place finishers on American Idol ranges from the back-to-back eyes-wide-open nightmares of Sanjaya Malakar and Kristy Lee Cook in Seasons 6 and 7 to the remarkable success story of Season 3 Wild Card Jennifer Hudson, who overcame the Pepto-Bismol Dress From Hell to scale Oscar- and Grammy-winning heights. In between those two extremes, though, the not-so-lucky No. 7 spot has been occupied by singers who showed early promise, then flamed out (Anwar Robinson, Kimberly Caldwell) and those whose “package artist” good looks carried them further than their vocal abilities might’ve otherwise suggested (Ryan Starr, Tim Urban, Ace Young). (Nope,...

DJ Trauma is taking his skills to a bigger stage. After spinning at Atlanta's Hot 107.9 for 10 years, Trauma recently left the station to focus on being the tour DJ for Ciara and Sean "The Pen" Garrett, as well as his own Carte Blanche team.
Trauma has long been a key member of the Atl DJ/mixtape scene thanks to his role as a co-founder of the Superfriends DJ clique, his work on radio and as a staple on the club scene, holding down parties for Diddy, Jamie Foxx and Jay-z, among others. Although Trauma has plenty of hip-hop ties, he believes his breakthrough mixtape was last year's #ialmostmadeamixtape, which had him teaming up with British R&B crooner Estelle.

Two contestants on American Idol will be sent home tonight. The judges save is no longer in play. The stress could not be more intense. Why am I typing like Ryan Seacrest talks? Why do we do anything in this world?
While you ponder that existential question, a brief tour of recent Idol history: When Matt Giraud was saved during Top 7 week in Season 8, wild card contestant Anoop Desai and early producer favorite/frontrunner Lil Rounds were sent home the next week. When Michael Lynche was saved during Top 9 week in Season 9, very early producer favorites/frontrunners Andrew Garcia and...

It's that very special week of the year, when we collectively realize that "American Idol" contestants were born the same year we saw "Uncle Buck" at the Westbury Drive-In. It's the dreaded "Songs From the Year the Contestants Were Born" theme, or as I like to call it, "Producers Force Thia Megia to Sing a Song That Wasn't Written 100 Years Ago."
But this week "Idol" is also giving back. Portions of the proceeds from the studio recordings will go to helping the relief efforts in Japan. But really, the entire world benefits from watching Steven Tyler sing, "There's something wrong with the world today ... Oh, hi there. Let's talk natural disasters."
Before I point out that 75 percent of the season 10 contestants were born after "Mannequin" hit theaters, and 25 percent of them after "Mannequin 2: On the Move," let's rip right into the top 12's performances.

There was a big surprise on tonight’s “Idol” results show but it had nothing to do with the way America cast their 40 million votes. Nor did it concern the fact that Seacrest & Co. couldn’t edit the show to a measly 120 minutes. (Don’t they realize that 10 p.m. is allotted for “Jersey Shore?”) No, the surprise was that the judges opted to choose three Wild Card finalists, making this the first Top 13 since Anoop Desai rounded out the group back in Season 8. More on that in a...

"American Idol" is here and Zap2it has been taking a stroll down memory lane to re-evaluate the previous nine seasons.
We're breaking it down into four categories: Best Performance, Worst Performance, Most Underrated Idol and most Overrated Idol. At the end, we will decide how the season stacks up against the rest, rating it as great, good, or not-so-good.
We've looked back at Season 1 (yay Kelly!), Season 2 (aww, Clay and Ruben!), the black hole that was Season 3, one of our favorite Top 2 in Season 4, and Soul Patrol-ed Season 5. We took a look back at beatboxin' Season 6 and the David vs. David finale of Season 7.
Season 8 contestants in order of elimination:
Jasmine Murray
Jorge Nunez
Alexis Grace
Michael Sarver
Megan Joy
Scott MacIntyre
Lil Rounds
Anoop Desai
Matt Giraud
Allison Iraheta
Danny Gokey
Adam Lambert
Kris Allen (winner)

Well that didn't take long. Adam Lambert received his first Grammy nomination Wednesday night for "Best Male Pop Vocal Performance" of the song "Whataya Want From Me" off his debut album For Your Entertainment. The album was released last November, and in the spirit of the passage "all that glitters is gold," has sold over 700,000 copies to date in the U.S. The well-crafted pop lament "Whataya Want From Me" was the second single from the CD and reached platinum status, selling over a million copies by April of 2010. The singer, who just finished up the international leg of his Glam Nation tour, had this to say via Twitter about his nomination, "Woah!! Just got the news! A Grammy nomination?!?! I'm floored and honored. There are no words." All that talent, and humility too? He may not have been expecting the nod, but his fans were. They have been flooding...

So let’s just call this thing: Crystal killed it, and Lee kinda choked. Having discussed last night’s American Idol finale performance night with EW.com’s preeminent Idoloonie Michael Slezak, I know that was also his assessment of the evening from the vantage point of his living room couch. From my seat inside the IdolDeathStar — a.k.a. the Nokia Theater La Live — the difference between Crystal’s often effortless excellence and Lee’s unfocused striving was even more stark. I don’t think I’ve experienced an Idol finale, on TV or in person, this lopsidedly obvious...

It's hard out there for an American Idol alum. Nine seasons and 107 finalists in, and there are far fewer Jennifer Hudsons and Chris Daughtrys than EJay Days and Scott Savols. Season 8 graduate Anoop Desai recognized that, and so when he finished the Idols Live tour last fall, he decided to try to quickly capitalize on his exposure; taking the money he'd earned from a summer's worth of live dates, he headed to Los Angeles, and invested in his own career. Friends or Bf and Gf? The way Lee DeWyze reacted when Siobhan Magnus got voted off Idol last night was touching — as was the way she took comfort in his arms!
I was shocked that Siobhan Magnus was sent packing from American Idol April 28 for her rendition of Shania Twain’s “Any Man of Mine” (the audience seemed to think Big Mike Lynche was going home and I personally wanted Aaron Kelly gone a long time ago) — but I wasn’t half as dismayed as the judges’ golden boy Lee DeWyze. The dude was so unhappy that he looked like he was going to cry…but what else is new?
Big Mike, Siobhan and my rocker hottie Casey James were all in the bottom three, but when Mikey boy was saved, Lee started to get nervous. The 24-year-old Mount Prospect, Illinois native paced the stage until he was forced to...

On Wednesday, MTV's "American Idol" experts confidently predicted that big Michael Lynche would be facing elimination for a second time this season after a so-so outing on Shania Twain night. But a few hours later, Mike was saved (again) from the bottom and it was caterwauling, glassblowing apprentice Siobhan Magnus who was ousted, leaving this much-heralded "girls" season on "Idol" down to one female front-runner, Crystal Bowersox.
"Siobhan's elimination was a pretty big shocker," MTV News' "Idol in 60 Seconds" major domo Jim Cantiello said. "In the 'Idol' pundit world, all bets were on Michael Lynche to go home."
Among the factors Jim cited as contributing to the surprise: Magnus got the final "pimp spot" on Tuesday's show,...

Last night American Idol finally felt like American Idol. All six contestants could sing and almost all of them brought their own spin to their songs. For the first time all season, artistry outweighed karaoke. It was a beautiful thing. Unfortunately what made last night good is exactly makes tonight's elimination the most difficult yet. Just like Rod Stewart sang ... the 19th cut is the deepest.
Who was the best of the best performance show yet? See our performance rankings.
Will Big Mike's second chance come to an end tonight? Will "High School student" Aaron Kelly be sent back to homeroom? Will Siobhan's screeching signal her demise? We have our predictions, as does our American Idol expert Anoop Desai but there's only one way to find out who's right ... watch along live with me.

Season nine's "American Idol" theme weeks have veered from the Rolling Stones to John Lennon and Paul McCartney to Elvis Presley to ... Shania Twain?
Yes, Tuesday's (April 27) show has poured its annual country-music week through the funnel of Twain's songbook. Is this the weirdest theme in this history of the show? That's a question we're asking in a poll over on MTV's Newsroom blog. At this point, what we can say for sure is that, for better or worse, Crystal Bowersox and her band of merry "Idol"-ers will dig into Twain's catalog. How familiar were they with her discography? We confess we had to go back into the vaults to catch up with Twain's career since her 1993 self-titled debut album.

Sorry "Elvis is alive" conspiracy theorists, I'm pretty sure last night's American Idol performance show proved once and for all, The King is dead. Because even if Elvis had stayed silent all these years in some remote Swiss chalet, surely he would have broken his cover and sent out an all points bulletin decrying last night's dreadfully boring interpretations of his songs.
I spent a lot of time since last night wondering how the Top 9 performed Elvis with no energy, but then I realized this is the same group who performed The Rolling Stones with no rock and "Soul Week" with no soul. It's getting high time we just come out and say it: Worst. Season. Ever.
