Amazon has reversed its renewal due to the work stoppage stemming from the current writers and actors strikes in the industry. The strikes have delayed production for several shows, and those series headed into their second seasons are among the most vulnerable to cancellation.

Despite doing well in its first season, Prime Video has sadly reversed its renewal of The Peripheral.

The change of heart likely stemmed from the dual strikes occurring across the industry.

The series starred Chloë Grace Moretz as Flynne Fischer, a woman who discovered a secret connection to an alternate reality as well as a dark future of her own.

What is one of the first of likely many strike-related cancellations, The Peripheral seemed to fare well on the streamer.

Each week, Twitter would be abuzz with theories and praise for the show, especially for the performances from Moretz and one of the lead antagonists, played by T'Nia Miller.

With the WGA on strike for over 100 days and SAG-AFTRA on strike for over a month, we expect there to be many similar cases of reversals when it comes to renewed series that hadn't already begun production.

Prime Video has canceled “The Peripheral,” despite the Chloë Grace Moretz-led sci-fi series receiving a renewal for a second season in February.

An individual with knowledge of the matter tells TheWrap that the cancelation stems from delays caused by the ongoing Writers’ Guild of America strike, which began on May 2, and SAG-AFTRA strike, which began on July 14. The individual noted that the series was originally intended to go into production this year for a release in 2024.

The news comes despite the fact that Amazon renewed the show for a second season back in February. The series, based on the William Gibson novel of the same name, debuted on Amazon on Oct. 21, 2022.

It starred Chloë Grace Moretz and hailed from executive producers Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan under their rich overall deal with Amazon. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, the decision to not move forward with the second season was heavily influenced by the ongoing writers and actors strikes. In essence, even if the show was to go back into production soon, Season 2 would not be available until close to if not into 2025.

Per the official logline, the series “centers on Flynne Fisher (Moretz), a woman trying to hold together the pieces of her broken family in a forgotten corner of tomorrow’s America.

I hear The Peripheral is not the only Amazon scripted series whose renewal has been rescinded and there is at least one other series that won’t go to a second season.

According to sources, the cancellation stems from the length of the work stoppage due to the ongoing WGA strike, now in its 109th day, and the SAG-AFTRA strike, in Day 36, which have delayed production, creating large gaps between seasons and making shows miss their target release dates.

The e-commerce giant and streamer has renewed the futuristic drama from Westworld creators Lisa Joy and Jonah Nolan for a second season.

The series from creator Scott B. Smith is based on William Gibson’s 2014 book of the same name and premiered its eight-episode freshman run in October with a pair of episodes before wrapping its season Dec. 2.

The series made Nielsen’s top 10 streaming chart once, the week of its finale, when its 394 million minutes ranked eighth among original series. Amazon, like other streamers, does not release viewership data like completion rates, etc.

The Peripheral is the first series that Joy and Nolan developed via the nine-figure overall deal the married duo signed in April 2019 with Amazon. The drama hails from Warner Bros. TV, where Joy and Nolan had been based prior to their move to the streamer.

When it comes to tackling time travel on the big screen, one could say Jonathan Nolan is something of an expert. The “Dark Knight” screenwriter spent years researching the practicalities of time travel for his 2014 film “Interstellar” (directed by his brother Christopher Nolan), to the point that he became something of an expert on the subject through the project’s lengthy development.

Which is why, when he read William Gibson’s 2014 book “The Peripheral,” Nolan was both excited and annoyed.

The story, which is now a Prime Video series produced by Nolan, concerns a young woman living in near-future America named Flynne Fisher (Chloe Grace Moretz) who, when plugged into an Ar device that looks like a video game, is able to transfer the data of her mind to a distant post-apocalyptic future and pilot a host robot body.

On Prime Video sci-fi series The Peripheral, the future is closer than you think.

And that’s because The Peripheral, based on a book 2014 book from genre titan William Gibson, actually features two futures. Produced by Westworld‘s Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, The Peripheral takes place in both 2032 and 2099. In 2032, Appalachian everywoman Flynne Fisher (Chloë Grace Moretz) and her brother Burton (Jack Reynor) work as professional gamers who rich clients hire to assist them through particularly difficult portions of popular games.

One day, Flynne and Burton undertake an assignment set in a futuristic video game only for Flynne to discover that the 2099 world she has transported her avatar to isn’t virtual reality but reality reality. There, embodying a meatsuit resembling herself, Flynne must join forces with freedom fighters including Wilf Netherton (Gary Carr) to track down the enigmatic Aelita West (Charlotte Riley) to avoid disasters in both timelines.

However, we’re in a whole brave new world now in this story of a Marine veteran (Jack Reynor) and his ace VR game playing sister, Flynne (Chloe Grace Moretz). They live with their dying mother in the Blue Ridge Mountains of 2032 and in an effort to handle her mushrooming medical bills, the duo make extra cash playing simulations (Sims).

Unfortunately, “The Peripheral,” based on William Gibson’s 2014 novel, is not a comparable alternative to any of the dense, engrossing genre series it aspires to emulate. It has time travel, gaming, and the lure of a post-apocalyptic backdrop, but manages to suck the thrill out of these promising elements and deliver something decidedly mundane.

If you have made it to Season 4 of “Westworld,” you’re familiar with executive producers Lisa Joy and Johnathan Nolan’s unique brand of non-linear storytelling. Mind-bending sci-fi, immersive technology, philosophy of the human condition and lots of robots. Their latest project, “The Peripheral,” based on the award-winning novel by William Gibson, follows a similar meandering journey. However, instead of AI gaining sentience and attempting to code themselves into humanity, “The Peripheral” follows a young human woman in a small town trying to navigate an uncertain world by peering through the eyes of a doppelgänger droid into the future.

The Peripheral arrives on Prime Video on October 21, and the cast — Chloë Grace Moretz, Gary Carr, T’Nia Miller, and JJ Feild — had a chance to talk about the show ahead of its premiere. Andrea Towers sat with them in the TV Insider and TV Guide Magazine New York Comic Con 2022 suite to discuss what attracted them to the sci-fi series, memorable moments on set, and who would survive the series’ virtual setting in real-life. “For me, it was William Gibson, Jonathan Nolan, and Lisa Joy — those are three incredibly hard hitters in sci-fi,” Moretz said about why she joined the cast. Author William Gibson wrote the 2014 novel of the same name, while Nolan and Joy (creators of Westworld) serve as executive producers of The Peripheral. The concept of VR games taking someone to another world isn't new, but The Peripheral adds layer of stakes and makes for a great entry in this sci-fi subgenre.

The performances from the leads elevate the series to something special, and (the always incredible) Chloë Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass) leads the cast to interesting places.

She plays Flynne Fisher, a young woman who gets in over her head when her brother, Burton, recruits her to help with testing a new sim game (so they think).

In Amazon’s new drama The Peripheral, a scientist is making adjustments to a robot meant to resemble a recently dispatched henchman. The voice is a problem. First, she orders his pitch to be lowered. Better. Still not quite right. Then she realizes his tone is too polite, and she orders the “amicability” dropped by 20 percent. Perfect.

One can imagine something very similar going on behind-the-scenes on The Peripheral, with series creator Scott Smith and executive producers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy deciding how much or how little their William Gibson adaptation would directly resemble HBO’s Westworld. “Give half of the characters feigned Southern accents and make the other half British,” you can imagine somebody saying. More than three years into their mega overall deal at Amazon Studios, married producing duo Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy await the Oct. 21 debut of their first Prime Video series, “The Peripheral.”

The sci-fi drama based on William Gibson’s 2014 novel of the same name was actually put into development at the streamer in April 2018, when Nolan and Joy were still under an overall deal at WarnerMedia and debuting the second season of HBO’s “Westworld.” It was ordered to series the following November, just a few months after the couple left their former home studio for a multiyear pact with Amazon.

Review: Virtual reality and time travel are two of the most commonly used tropes in science fiction stories and used to be unique storytelling techniques. Thanks to improved special effects which have allowed countless stories to be told in ways they never could have been in the past. The new series The Peripheral manages to upend expectations by blending the intelligent and complex sci-fi of series like Westworld with the intricacies of crime dramas like Ozark and Breaking Bad.

Prime Video has had a rough track record with their science-fiction programming, with both "Paper Girls" and the J.K. Simmons and Sissy Spacek "Night Sky" getting the axe after just one season. However, the streamer is hoping to turn the tides with their new Chloë Grace Moretz-starring adaptation of "The Peripheral," based on William Gibson's novel of the same name. The series centers on a young woman named Flynne, who comes across a VR helmet that gives her the ability to be transported 70 years in the future. She thinks at first she's just in a dystopian game, but quickly realizes this is the world ahead. The Peripheral, from Westworld creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan “Jonah” Nolan, marks the executive producing husband-wife duo’s second venture into dystopian sci-fi for the small screen.

On Tuesday evening, the cast and crew of the Amazon Prime Video series gathered at the Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles to celebrate the show’s premiere.

“Jonah Nolan and Lisa Joy are two heavy hitters in sci-fi,” star Chloë Grace Moretz told The Hollywood Reporter on the carpet. “When you add [writer] William Gibson, on top of that, who is one of the godfathers of sci-fi, it was too good to be true.”

“One wonderful thing about Jonah and Lisa is that they know how to take sci-fi, and kind of boil it down in a way where it’s expansive, but also understandable,” she continued. “I think in this show, there’s such a warmth to it.

Episodes the sci-fi series The Peripheral will be released through the Amazon Prime streaming service from October 21st through December 9th – and with just over a week to go before the show premieres, a new trailer has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above!

Prime Video dropped the latest trailer for The Peripheral, the long-gestating sci-fi drama from Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan’s Kilter Films that’s based on the bestselling novel by William Gibson. The cast and producers made an appearance at New York Comic-Con today to hype the series that premieres Oct. 21.

“When I read the book Count Zero [by Gibson], it felt like a first hit of acid. I never experienced anything like the worlds that Gibson created,” Nolan told convention goers Saturday. “I’ve watched every filmmaker rip off all the ideas, myself included, from his works and no one actually had the guts to go and adapt from the source. Executive producer Jonathan Nolan opened the 2022 New York Comic Con panel for Prime Video’s The Peripheral by explaining just how he and executive producer Lisa Joy got involved in the sci-fi thriller. “Vincenzo Natali brought us – who we’ve been lucky enough to work with for years on Westworld – came to us and said, ‘How do you guys feel about helping me bring to life a William Gibson book?’ We got to the William Gibson part and we said, ‘Sure.’”

Nolan recalls reading the books out of order when he was 14 years old, describing the experience as like that “first hit of acid.” Nolan confessed he’s watched for the last 20 years as every filmmaker – himself included – ripped off Gibson’s ideas. “For us, this felt like coming full circle. Once we read the book, we knew this was the perfect adaptation for a series for William Gibson.”
