John is from a long acting dynasty: grandson of actress Ena Grossmith. Great-grandson of actor/manager/writer George Grossmith, whose brother was actor Lawrence Grossmith. Great-great-grandson of Gilbert and Sullivan actor George Grossmith who, with his brother Weedon Grossmith, wrote The Diary of a Nobody (2007).

John is the brother of author Robert Radcliffe whose 1998 novel was made into the film The Lazarus Child (2004).
