Just about everything in the television and entertainment industries has changed in the past five to 10 years. Not too long ago, the month of September was focused almost exclusively on the return of football and the launch of a new, robust slate of TV shows. However, as cord-cutting rapidly decreased the number of Americans watching television in traditional ways, the release calendar has shifted. So while there are still a number of new and returning shows premiering on broadcast channels during the back half of the month, it is nowhere near the numbers of decades past.

Many of the best titles on TV have migrated from networks and cable channels to streaming in recent years, but with the non-standard release schedules, it can be tough to keep up with what is airing where and when, and which shows are actually worth watching.

Fans of Brooklyn Nine-Nine will be well aware of the fact that Detective Rosa Diaz isn’t one for sugar-coating anything. Based on the Maite Alberdi’s documentary The Mole Agent, the series, which launches today, could be seen as a limited project, a one and done investigation, but Danson and showrunner Mike Schur are hoping for more cases.

In the finale episode [Spoilers Alert], Danson’s Charles answers his phone from private investigator Julie, played by Lilah Richcreek Estrada. “I can’t believe I’m saying this but I have another job for you,” she says.

“Say no more,” replies Charles before hanging up the phone. “Hey, sorry I do need you to say more but whatever it is, I’m in,” he adds as he calls her back.

The setup is designed for a second season.

One week after breaking audience records by televising either Logan or Jake Paul (Truly, I couldn’t care less) pummeling Mike Tyson in the ring, Netflix is delivering a much more compassionate portrait of the challenges of aging and the dangers of elder abuse.

It will be easy to dub the Mike Schur-created A Man on the Inside as Only Robberies at the Nursing Home — count how many of your friendly neighborhood TV critics make that identical joke. But it wouldn’t be inappropriate, and it also wouldn’t be a criticism. It would actually be high praise.

Like Only Murders in the Building, A Man on the Inside is a semi-comic look at people who combat loneliness by thrusting their lives into an established genre that they adore. It’s a perfect star vehicle for, simultaneously, its beloved leading man and its impeccably cast ensemble.

The Fox turned NBC comedy series ran for eight seasons total, from 2013 to 2021, with 153 episodes across both networks.

Netflix has released the trailer for A Man on the Inside, which is based on the documentary The Mole Agent, a 2021 Oscar nominee for Best Documentary Feature.

From creator Mike Schur and starring Ted Danson, the series will premiere on November 21 and consists of eight 30-minute episodes. Danson plays Charles, a retired man who gets a new lease on life when he answers an ad from a Pi and becomes a mole in a secret investigation.

Ted Danson is picking up an investigative retirement gig in Mike Schur’s new Netflix comedy, “A Man on the Inside.”

In the trailer for “A Man on the Inside,” Charles (Danson) receives a challenge from his daughter, Emily (Mary Elizabeth Ellis), who expresses concern about his retirement lifestyle in the wake of her mother and his wife’s death, saying, “When mom was alive, they lived this big, full life.”

“I’m giving you a challenge — find something that excites you,” she tells her dad, who answers, “It’s a good challenge; I accept.”

Rather quickly, Charles finds an ad for an investigative assistant, with the requirement that the applicant be aged 75-85. He learns the gig is to find a missing family heirloom that has disappeared within a retirement community, and his job is to pretend to be a new resident, all while sharing intel and a suspect...

The show, which Netflix gave a straight-to-series order in March 2023, is based on the Oscar-nominated documentary The Mole Agent. Danson plays Charles, a retired professor who’s in a rut following the death of his wife, having grown distant from his daughter, Emily (Mary Elizabeth Ellis). Netflix describes the show this way:

“For the majority of seniors, the biggest threat to their wellbeing isn’t an accident or health, it’s loneliness,” says Stephanie Beatriz’s Didi, director of the Pacific View Retirement Home in Netflix’s upcoming series A Man On The Inside.

To combat this Ted Danson’s retired professor Charles becomes a mole agent at the home. “I don’t know how to be a spy, but it’s good for me, makes me feel useful,” he says in the first trailer for the show.
