The Streamable’s experts rank the top shows currently available to stream today.
Just about everything in the television and entertainment industries has changed in the past five to 10 years. Not too long ago, the month of September was focused almost exclusively on the return of football and the launch of a new, robust slate of TV shows. However, as cord-cutting rapidly decreased the number of Americans watching television in traditional ways, the release calendar has shifted. So while there are still a number of new and returning shows premiering on broadcast channels during the back half of the month, it is nowhere near the numbers of decades past.
Many of the best titles on TV have migrated from networks and cable channels to streaming in recent years, but with the non-standard release schedules, it can be tough to keep up with what is airing where and when, and which shows are actually worth watching.

Fans of Brooklyn Nine-Nine will be well aware of the fact that Detective Rosa Diaz isn’t one for sugar-coating anything. With her tough, no-nonsense attitude, and a sharp tongue that could cut through steel, Rosa is the kind of character who commands respect without saying much. And in many ways, Rosa has been a real-life reflection of the actress behind the role, Stephanie Beatriz.
Stephanie Beatriz as Rosa Diaz in Brooklyn Nine-Nine | image: Fox, NBC
The actress Stephanie Beatriz, much like her on-screen persona, is unapologetically direct, fierce, and unafraid to stand her ground. So much so that she once shut down an older actor, after he crossed the line, and proved that she was born to play Rosa Diaz, given how she and her character were two sides of the same coin—a whole lot of grit and attitude.

A wonderful new series emerges in the lively world of Netflix comedies, flipping the typical spy narrative on its head. “A Man on the Inside” brings the reunion of comedy legend Mike Schur and television veteran Ted Danson after their critically lauded collaboration on “The Good Place.” This time, they’re embarking on an unorthodox espionage adventure set in the most unlikely of locations: a retirement home.
Ted Danson plays Charles Nieuwendyk, a recently bereaved retired professor seeking meaning in his life. Charles seizes the opportunity when a private investigator named Julie offers him an unusual undercover task. His task? Infiltrate the Pacific View Retirement Home to investigate a strange theft, turning an ordinary senior’s day into an unplanned spy mission.

Ted Danson is back with a new comedy on Netflix — and this time, he’s going undercover.
Danson stars in A Man on the Inside, which debuted Thursday on the streamer, as Charles Nieuwendyk, a retired college professor who’s a bit aimless after the death of his wife. “Now this is a comedy I can enjoy talking about.” This was the first thought I had after finishing the first episode of A Man on the Inside. As a person who despises mainstream comedy but loves Pitch Perfect solely for the sisterhood, I couldn’t help but worry that a show called A Man on the Inside would in no way interest me. I regret going into work the most when I’m assigned reality TV or pure comedies, but this show completely caught me off guard. I know when most people see the list of the shows produced by this guy they’d immediately be on board, but cut me some slack as a fake comedy hater. Also, while I’m going on about humor, A Man on the Inside is actually a spy TV show.

Most of the time, describing a show as something a whole family can enjoy, from age 8 to 88, means a whole family will be fine having it on while they look at their phones. People like looking at their phones, so this is a thriving TV genre, encompassing the likes of Dancing With the Stars, The Floor and Judge Steve Harvey. But with Thanksgiving imminent, and thus the likelihood that you’re going to be gathering near a TV with loved ones of wide-ranging ages, Netflix has made a show the whole family can actually enjoy. A Man On The Inside is a caper, a buddy comedy and a meditation on grief, and pulls off all three effortlessly.

When you watch a Mike Schur comedy, you’re expecting a certain tone. Punchy characters, zany situations, larger-than-life guest stars and light-hearted warmth are trademarks of series like “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Parks and Recreation” and “The Good Place.”
So Schur’s new Netflix series, “A Man on the Inside,” may surprise you. Sure, the comedy features another diverse cast with optimistic undertones, but it’s also unafraid to sit in its moments of silence to tackle some of life’s biggest questions in a delightfully uplifting way.
“A Man on the Inside” reunites Schur with lead Ted Danson (“The Good Place”). The project is based on Maite Alberdi’s 2020 Oscar-nominated documentary “The Mole Agent,” in which a man responds to a newspaper ad and becomes a spy in an assisted living community. Here, Danson plays a fictionalized version of that man, named Charles.
When we meet Charles he’s incredibly lonely.

After tackling the afterlife as the architect of Hell in The Good Place and becoming the unexpected mayor of Los Angeles as a wealthy businessman in Mr. Mayor, there was only one thing left for Ted Danson to do: retire. That's kind of what the veteran comedy actor does in his new Netflix original comedy series A Man on the Inside, which comes from his Good Place boss Michael Schur.
Danson plays Charles Nieuwendyk, a recent widower with a lot of time on his hands. When his daughter suggests giving a new hobby a shot, she didn't necessarily mean to push the engineering professor to accept an advertisement to go undercover, but that's what Charles does. He works with a private investigator to be her "man on the inside" at a San Francisco retirement home.
The new series, released Nov. 21 on Netflix, finds Charles looking into the curious case of a stolen necklace.

Due to modern medicine, people are living longer and more fruitful lives, but television depictions of those enjoying their golden years certainly haven’t caught up. There are anomalies, of course, like Netflix’s “Grace and Frankie,” Max’s “Hacks,” and the new CBS drama “Matlock,” but for the most part, ageism has pushed older adults to the outskirts of popular culture. But in his delightful new comedy, “A Man on the Inside,” “The Good Place” creator Michael Schur has reteamed with Ted Danson for a charming and hilarious whodunit that examines grief, love and the excitement of new beginnings from the perspective of seniors.
Based on Maite Alberdi’s Academy Award-nominated documentary “The Mole Agent,” “A Man on the Inside” follows Charles (Danson), a retired widower living a monotonous life in San Francisco. Concerned with her father’s well-being, his adult daughter Emily (Mary Elizabeth Ellis) urges him to...

In Netflix’s A Man On The Inside, Ted Danson stars as Charles a retired professor who goes undercover in a retirement community to solve the mystery of a resident’s family heirloom that’s disappeared.
Based on the Maite Alberdi’s documentary The Mole Agent, the series, which launches today, could be seen as a limited project, a one and done investigation, but Danson and showrunner Mike Schur are hoping for more cases.
In the finale episode [Spoilers Alert], Danson’s Charles answers his phone from private investigator Julie, played by Lilah Richcreek Estrada. “I can’t believe I’m saying this but I have another job for you,” she says.
“Say no more,” replies Charles before hanging up the phone. “Hey, sorry I do need you to say more but whatever it is, I’m in,” he adds as he calls her back.
The setup is designed for a second season.

One week after breaking audience records by televising either Logan or Jake Paul (Truly, I couldn’t care less) pummeling Mike Tyson in the ring, Netflix is delivering a much more compassionate portrait of the challenges of aging and the dangers of elder abuse.
It will be easy to dub the Mike Schur-created A Man on the Inside as Only Robberies at the Nursing Home — count how many of your friendly neighborhood TV critics make that identical joke. But it wouldn’t be inappropriate, and it also wouldn’t be a criticism. It would actually be high praise.

Don't blow his cover, but Ted Danson's going undercover in a retirement home in his new Netflix original series A Man on the Inside. Inspired by the documentary The Mole Agent, the series comes from Parks and Recreation and The Good Place creator Michael Schur, which gives the comedy both its wit and its sneaky pathos.
In A Man on the Inside, Danson plays Charles Nieuwendyk, a recent widower who's pushed by his daughter Emily (Mary Elizabeth Ellis) to try something new. Under this advice, Charles answers a newspaper advertisement from private investigator Julie (Lilah Richcreek Estrada) to go undercover in a retirement home to get to the bottom of a stolen necklace mystery.
Even though he's a former engineering professor with zero spy skills under his belt, Charles is very excited to be taking on his exciting new role to find out who's the caper in the retirement home.

Netflix has submitted a total of 32 TV programs for awards consideration at the upcoming Golden Globes, and 20 for the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Gold Derby has learned exclusively.
Some of the streamer’s notable TV titles include Season 2 of “Squid Game,” the survival thriller starring Emmy and SAG winner Lee Jung-jae; popular new comedy “Nobody Wants This,” about an agnostic woman (Kristen Bell) and an unconventional rabbi (Adam Brody); and “Baby Reindeer,” the buzzy limited series that recently set the Emmys on fire, going home with six trophies. See the full list of submissions below, broken down by show.
Note that the Golden Globes have lead actor and lead actress categories that are separated by TV genres (drama/comedy/limited), but that the supporting actor and supporting actress races encapsulate all genres. As of last year, the organization also now offers an award for the best stand-up comedy special on television.

Now season 2 is speeding ahead… and Michael Jonathan Smith has taken to social media to confirm that filming on the new season has wrapped! Look, obviously the big news this November is the U.S. presidential election.
But for the moments when you want to look away from wall-to-wall coverage (or just stop doomscrolling), Netflix has plenty to keep you occupied. There’s new original Christmas movies like “Hot Frosty” and “The Merry Gentlemen,” as well as more “Outer Banks” for fans of that show created by Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke. Plus Oscar contenders like “Emilia Perez” are now streaming on the service. But all of that is just preamble to our No. 1 pick this month, because when Mike Schur has a new television show, it’s time to pay attention.

"It's good for me. Makes me feel useful." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a comedy series called A Man on the Inside, which will be streaming later in November. This is the next series from Mike Schur, known for creating "Parks & Rec", "The Good Place", "Brooklyn Nine-Nine". Ted Danson is picking up an investigative retirement gig in Mike Schur’s new Netflix comedy, “A Man on the Inside.”
In the trailer for “A Man on the Inside,” Charles (Danson) receives a challenge from his daughter, Emily (Mary Elizabeth Ellis), who expresses concern about his retirement lifestyle in the wake of her mother and his wife’s death, saying, “When mom was alive, they lived this big, full life.”
“I’m giving you a challenge — find something that excites you,” she tells her dad, who answers, “It’s a good challenge; I accept.”
Rather quickly, Charles finds an ad for an investigative assistant, with the requirement that the applicant be aged 75-85. He learns the gig is to find a missing family heirloom that has disappeared within a retirement community, and his job is to pretend to be a new resident, all while sharing intel and a suspect...

The state murder of George Floyd in the summer of 2020 led a lot of people to take stock of their lives and values. Protests were attended; decisions about charitable giving were revised; media diets were re-evaluated. Vulture’s Kathryn VanArendonk wrote an essay that elucidated the problem: “Cops Are Always the Main Characters.”
Some shows’ producers met the moment head-on, taking accountability for their part in promoting copaganda. Brooklyn Nine-Nine, for example, famously scrapped a whole season’s worth of scripts and wrote life-changing self-reflection by its characters into what ended up being its final season: Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz) retired from the NYPD to become a private detective working with clients who’d been victimized by corrupt policing, while Holt (Andre Braugher) and Santiago (Melissa Fumero) devised a plan to defund their department.

The core cast of “The Legend of Vox Machina” is pretty unique among voice actors, or actors of any stripe, really. It’s rare that an actor originates the concept for a character, lives with them for nearly a decade, improvises nearly 400 hours of material, and participates closely in the character design, scripting, and storyboarding of an animated series — all before they step into the booth to record their lines.
The Prime Video series (about a group of fantasy fuck-ups who might just be the heroes the magical land of Exandra needs) balances that wealth of experience that the “Critical Role” cast — Laura Bailey, Taliesin Jaffe, Ashley Johnson, Matthew Mercer, Liam O’Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, and Travis Willingham — all have with an adventuring party full of guest voices. Rachel House, Stephanie Beatriz, Gina Torres, and the late, great Lance Reddick, among others, all sub in for characters originally voiced...

The third season of The Legend of Vox Machina, based on a live-streamed Dungeons & Dragons game played out by the troupe of voice actors from Critical Role, premieres next week on Prime Video, and Amazon is trying to drum up hype. To that end, you can now watch all 24 episodes of the series yet released — 12 episodes per season — for free on the Prime Video YouTube channel. Here's the series premiere to get you started:
The Legend of Vox Machina is based on a D&d game and it feels like a D&d game: a group of adventurers get mixed up in a number of quests as they level up and grow more powerful. That said, the show can be more deliberate than the free-form D&d game with exploring characters and plotting story arcs; the producers have promised that the upcoming third season will bring the angst and break viewers' hearts,...

However, there was another love interest in the show that could have been the one for Andy Samberg’s Jake Peralta – Eva Longoria’s Sophia. The badass defense attorney whose life gets tangled with a reckless detective. While Peraltiago was the endgame, we can’t help but wonder if Sophia was a better match for Jake.
