Sam Lipman-Stern is an Emmy Nominated Filmmaker with a passion for the visual arts that dates to his early days as a graffiti artist. Lipman-Stern has become known globally for bringing an authentic eye and hip-hop perspective to the film medium. After cutting his teeth as a director, crafting videos for legendary and underground hip-hop artists, and graffiti writers alike, he began as an intern at VICE in 2011 working his way up from a production assistant to a Director/Producer during the time when VICE was exploding and becoming a globally recognized brand. In 2012, he co-created and launched his first series "Live from The Streets", a celebrated documentary series starring hip-hop producer Mr. Green, which quickly became one of the most popular series on VICE's music channel, Noisey.
After VICE, Lipman-Stern was hired as a full-time staff director/producer at Rolling Stone Magazine, he produced many high-profile projects during his tenure at the company until his departure in 2018. Sam is known for getting the most interesting and authentic interviews, and ultimately becoming friends with artists and celebrities, from Rick Ross and Slash to Charlie Puth and Keith Richards. With his highly stylized productions, Lipman-Stern was able to develop Rolling Stone's video brand which led to bringing the channel hundreds of millions of views worldwide. Lipman-Stern also filmed content for Complex, with Jerry Seinfeld and hip-hop artist Wale, which was highly praised and went viral around the globe. His current client roster includes HBO, Forbes Magazine, PBS, MTV, Esquire, The New York Times, Interscope Records, Apple, Adidas, The NBA and more.
In 2019, Lipman-Stern spent a month on the "OceanX" ship, documenting a scientific mission to "SAVE the CORAL REEFS" by filming underwater sea life and the human impact on the ocean's ecosystem. In 2021 Lipman-Stern Executive Produced and Directed "Forbes: Rap Mentors," an intimate behind-the-scenes look at the music industry that starred a who's who of rap royalty, including Black Thought of The Roots, Saweetie, Murda Beatz, E-40, Scott Storch and Steve Lobel. The special 3-part documentary series garnered high praise and accolades throughout the hip-hop world.
In August 2023, HBO released Telemarketers, a 3-part limited documentary series Created, Executive Produced and Co-Directed by Lipman-Stern. Executive Producers of the series included Danny McBride, Josh and Benny Safdie and David Gordon Green. Time Magazine called it, "One of the Most Exciting Docuseries in Recent Years!" The series won a Critics Choice Award for Best True Crime Documentary and a 2024 Emmy Nomination. Currently, Lipman-Stern is working as an Executive Producer and Director on several up-and-coming documentary features and series for television and streaming platforms.
