Look, we get it: The combined actors’ and writers’ strikes threw a significant wrench into the awards-industrial complex. And the right decision was canceling the 2023 Emmys. But the wrong decision was blind adherence to “the show must go on” and staging an Emmys ceremony in early 2024 — five months after the votes had been cast, and setting the stage for two Emmy ceremonies in the same year.

Talk about popular! On the eve of the Golden Globe nominations being announced, “Wicked” has now solidified its place within the top five for Gold Derby’s Best Picture Oscar predictions.

Buoyed by its ever-growing box office and its recent wins at the National Board of Review and the AFI top 10, the musical film soared past “Dune: Part Two” this weekend to officially claim the No. 5 spot in our rankings. Here are Gold Derby’s updated Best Picture odds, as of Dec. 7:

After two decades as one of the most popular musicals on the Broadway stage, “Wicked” finally arrived in theaters with Part 1 in November 2024. Cynthia Erivo plays Elphaba Thropp, aka the Wicked Witch of the West, and Ariana Grande takes on the role of Galinda Upland, aka Glinda the Good, in director Jon M. Chu‘s instant classic film from Universal Pictures.

The Best Limited/Movie Actress race at the 2025 Golden Globes has had the same two frontrunners all season long: Jodie Foster (“True Detective: Night Country”) and Cate Blanchett (“Disclaimer”). But there’s a brand new challenger in the third place position in the form of Cristin Milioti (“The Penguin”). Can she pull out a victory when the 82nd annual Golden Globes air on Jan. 5, 2025, on CBS?

Foster, Blanchett, and Milioti are expected to be joined by Sofia Vergara (“Griselda”), Naomi Watts (“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”), and Nicole Kidman (“The Perfect Couple”) in this year’s nominations lineup, per our combined odds. Brody plays László Tóth, a Hungarian-Jewish architect and Holocaust survivor, who emigrates to the United States in the 1940s in the hopes of achieving the American Dream. While László is waiting for his wife (Felicity Jones) to join him, he starts working with his cousin (Alessandro Nivola) at a furniture store, and he eventually comes into contact with a wealthy industrialist (Guy Pearce). The Best TV Comedy Actor race at the 2025 Golden Globes looks to be getting some fresh blood in the form of Brian Jordan Alvarez (“English Teacher”). He plays Evan Marquez on FX’s freshman comedy series that takes place at the fictional Morrison-Hensley High School. Alvarez has skyrocketed up to fifth place to win this category, compared to two months ago when he placed outside of Gold Derby’s predicted nominees.

“I’m so excited about the show,” says Ronna Kress, the casting director of “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” on Apple TV+. “We worked so hard and did such a huge, worldwide search for almost five months.” She spoke with Gold Derby’s Latasha Ford backstage during the launch event at the DGA Theater in Hollywood this month. Kress explains the unlikely casting of Ren Watabe as Kentaro, stating, “We needed an actor who we really wanted to follow through the series. Someone who was believable in the Japanese world, but also could speak English for the English-speaking world as well. He really came out of nowhere. In his audition, the first time that we saw him, our casting director in Tokyo introduced us to him. He said, ‘I’m really tired, I’m sorry.’ We said, ‘What were you working on last night?’ And he’s a line cook.

“We’ve been working on this project for a long time,” reveals Chris Black, the showrunner/executive producer of “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” on Apple TV+. This highly anticipated television series in the MonsterVerse franchise has been “a lot of effort,” he tells us, with “a lot of people pouring their talent and passion into something, and now we’re getting it out here for people to see, so we’re really excited.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Other than his past collaboration with composer Leopold Ross, most of the behind-the-scenes talents on “Monarch” are new to Black’s world. “Part of the fun of a project like this is being introduced to new talented people that you haven’t worked with before,” he begins, “and having our team at the studio, at Legendary, at Apple bringing people into my circle.”

Monday night at the DGA Theatre in Hollywood, Apple TV+ unveiled its long-gestating MonsterVerse project, “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” to a packed crowd of excited guild voters. “Derbyites, we are back once again for one of your favorite things on Earth; it’s 23 categories in 23 minutes!” proclaims Gold Derby senior editor Rob Licuria. He joins managing editor Chris Beachum in their latest installment of an annual tradition of debating their winner predictions for who will win in all 23 Oscar categories, but in just 23 rapid-fire minutes.

“It’s exciting to end Oscar season,” Beachum says, noting with a grin that he “started on Oscar season July 1st of last summer. Just hours after “The Bear” star Jeremy Allen White won his first career Golden Globe on Tuesday night, he found himself nominated at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Wednesday morning. Should he prevail there, too, White would claim the exact same Best Comedy Actor SAG trophy that William H. Macy won three times for “Shameless” in 2015, 2017 and 2018. It’d be the ultimate poetic justice for TV fans, of course, as Macy and White played an estranged father and son, Frank Gallagher and Lip Gallagher, on the Showtime dramedy for 11 years.

There are more similarities between “The Bear” and “Shameless” than you might realize at first glance. Both shows are dark comedies that take place in Chicago, Illinois and center on protagonists dealing with troubling family issues. With the last two years of showbiz awards being very erratic, 2022 seemed to be the first year in a while where everything was back to normal, or at least the closest thing to it. Probably 15 or so that we do 25 categories in 25 minutes,” Chris proclaims about their long-standing annual tradition of dedicating a minute to each category announced on Emmy night, which this year means it’s 25 categories in 27 minutes.
