We tune in to awards ceremonies for the soaring moments — the history-making wins, upset victories, redemption stories, heartfelt speeches, and killer performances. But mixed in with all those highs are some dreadful lows. And 2024 had its fill, from the Oscars, Golden Globes, Emmys (under-recognition for Curb Your Enthusiasm and Better Call Saul), and the Grammys (Taylor Swift‘s Album of the Year victory).
Enjoy (or cringe at) the 16 moments Gold Derby has chosen as the year’s lowlights:
Having two Emmy ceremonies in one year
Look, we get it: The combined actors’ and writers’ strikes threw a significant wrench into the awards-industrial complex. And the right decision was canceling the 2023 Emmys. But the wrong decision was blind adherence to “the show must go on” and staging an Emmys ceremony in early 2024 — five months after the votes had been cast, and setting the stage for two Emmy ceremonies in the same year.

There’s a new frontrunner in Gold Derby’s Oscar odds for Best Production Design: Nathan Crowley for “Wicked”
The English artisan has broken his tie with Patrice Vermette (“Dune: Part Two”) to claim the No. 1 position on our chart for the upcoming 2025 Oscars. Note that it’s still quite early in this awards season, and things could keep changing as our experts, editors, and top 24 users continue to update their predictions.
After two decades as one of the most popular musicals on the Broadway stage, “Wicked” finally arrived in theaters with Part 1 in November 2024. Cynthia Erivo plays Elphaba Thropp, aka the Wicked Witch of the West, and Ariana Grande takes on the role of Galinda Upland, aka Glinda the Good, in director Jon M. Chu‘s instant classic film from Universal Pictures.
This would be Crowley’s seventh career Oscar nomination, after previously being recognized for “The Prestige” (2006), “The Dark Knight...

The Best Limited/Movie Actress race at the 2025 Golden Globes has had the same two frontrunners all season long: Jodie Foster (“True Detective: Night Country”) and Cate Blanchett (“Disclaimer”). But there’s a brand new challenger in the third place position in the form of Cristin Milioti (“The Penguin”). Can she pull out a victory when the 82nd annual Golden Globes air on Jan. 5, 2025, on CBS?
Foster, Blanchett, and Milioti are expected to be joined by Sofia Vergara (“Griselda”), Naomi Watts (“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”), and Nicole Kidman (“The Perfect Couple”) in this year’s nominations lineup, per our combined odds. Foster recently won the Emmy for “True Detective: Night Country, with Vergara and Watts being co-nominees. Blanchett, Milioti, and Kidman star on new programs that will be eligible at next year’s Emmys.
“The Penguin” is HBO’s take on the classic DC Comics “Batman” villain, with Colin Farrell playing the titular role.

There’s a new frontrunner in Gold Derby’s Oscar odds for Best Actor: Adrien Brody (“The Brutalist”). The American actor has officially broken his tie with Ralph Fiennes (“Conclave”) to claim the No. 1 position on our chart at the upcoming 2025 Oscars. Of course, it’s still quite early in this awards season, and things could keep changing as our experts, editors, and users continue to update their predictions.

The Best TV Comedy Actor race at the 2025 Golden Globes looks to be getting some fresh blood in the form of Brian Jordan Alvarez (“English Teacher”). He plays Evan Marquez on FX’s freshman comedy series that takes place at the fictional Morrison-Hensley High School. Alvarez has skyrocketed up to fifth place to win this category, compared to two months ago when he placed outside of Gold Derby’s predicted nominees.
Alvarez’s likely co-nominees, according to our Golden Globe predictions for Best TV Comedy Actor, are Jeremy Allen White (“The Bear”) at 18/5 odds, Steve Martin (“Only Murders in the Building”) at 9/2 odds, Martin Short (“Only Murders in the Building”) at 5/1 odds, Jason Segel (“Shrinking”) at 15/2 odds, and Vince Vaughn (“Bad Monkey”) at 10/1 odds.

The topsy-turvy Best Director race at the 2025 Oscars just got more interesting. Edward Berger (“Conclave”), who was predicted to receive a nomination back in the summer before getting knocked out of the category’s Top 5, has now returned to the Best Director lineup. Note that Gold Derby’s Oscar odds will continue to change as our Experts, Editors and Users keep making or updating their predictions.

There’s been a major shake-up in Gold Derby’s Oscar odds for Best Supporting Actress: Zoe Saldana (“Emilia Perez”) has officially broken her tie with Danielle Deadwyler (“The Piano Lesson”). Saldana now has leading 39/10 odds to win the trophy, compared to Deadwyler’s second-place odds of 4/1. But, don’t forget, it’s still quite early in this awards season, and things will undoubtedly keep changing as our Experts, Editors and Users continue to update their predictions.
Saldana (as undervalued lawyer Rita Moro Castro) and Karla Sofia Gascon (as titular crime boss Emilia Perez) are essentially co-leads in the Spanish-language French musical dramedy from writer/director Jacques Audiard. However, to avoid any potential vote-splitting, Saldana has opted to compete in the supporting actress category during this awards season, while Gascon is facing off in the lead actress race.

“Baby Reindeer” has been on an upward trajectory since its quiet premiere in April, and that is reflected in this 2024 Emmy lineup for Best Limited/Movie Writing. Not only is Richard Gadd expected to win here, but he’s also nominated for producing and starring in the Netflix limited series. It’s one of two full showings nominated in this category and is the only autobiographical series represented. The other nominees stem from “Ripley,” “Black Mirror,” “Fargo,” “Fellow Travelers” and “True Detective: Night Country.” With Gadd’s odds looking steady for both Best Limited Series and Best Limited/Movie Actor, will he also pull off a victory in the writing category?
Here are Gold Derby’s current Best Limited/Movie Writing Emmy 2024 racetrack odds:
1. “Baby Reindeer” (Richard Gadd) — 10/3 odds
2. “Ripley” (Steven Zaillian) — 9/2 odds
3. “Fargo” (“The Tragedy of the Commons” by Noah Hawley) — 5/1 odds

“We are back once again for really a very fun tradition that Chris and I have had for many, many years. It’s 25 categories in 25 minutes. We don’t muck around here, we get straight to the point,” declares Gold Derby senior editor Rob Licuria, who is joined by managing editor Chris Beachum to debate their final predictions for all 25 Primetime Emmy categories. “I’m thrilled; we’re not in in a a random month like January, we’re back in September, where we belong,” Chris adds about their long-standing annual tradition of dedicating a minute to each category announced on Emmy night, and doing so in September. The ABC ceremony will be hosted by Emmy winning father and son duo Eugene Levy and Dan Levy, with festivities commencing at 5 p.m. Pt on Sunday, September 15.

“I’m so excited about the show,” says Ronna Kress, the casting director of “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” on Apple TV+. “We worked so hard and did such a huge, worldwide search for almost five months.” She spoke with Gold Derby’s Latasha Ford backstage during the launch event at the DGA Theater in Hollywood this month. Watch the full video interview above.
Kress explains the unlikely casting of Ren Watabe as Kentaro, stating, “We needed an actor who we really wanted to follow through the series. Someone who was believable in the Japanese world, but also could speak English for the English-speaking world as well. He really came out of nowhere. In his audition, the first time that we saw him, our casting director in Tokyo introduced us to him. He said, ‘I’m really tired, I’m sorry.’ We said, ‘What were you working on last night?’ And he’s a line cook.

“We’ve been working on this project for a long time,” reveals Chris Black, the showrunner/executive producer of “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” on Apple TV+. This highly anticipated television series in the MonsterVerse franchise has been “a lot of effort,” he tells us, with “a lot of people pouring their talent and passion into something, and now we’re getting it out here for people to see, so we’re really excited.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Other than his past collaboration with composer Leopold Ross, most of the behind-the-scenes talents on “Monarch” are new to Black’s world. “Part of the fun of a project like this is being introduced to new talented people that you haven’t worked with before,” he begins, “and having our team at the studio, at Legendary, at Apple bringing people into my circle.”
Black adds, “We just had an amazing team.

He joins managing editor Chris Beachum in their latest installment of an annual tradition of debating their winner predictions for who will win in all 23 Oscar categories, but in just 23 rapid-fire minutes.
“It’s exciting to end Oscar season,” Beachum says, noting with a grin that he “started on Oscar season July 1st of last summer. So eight or nine months later, however long this is, it’s good to be at the finish line!” Watch the video slugfest above as they explain their predictions of what they think will happen on Oscar night. And it’s the most disagreements they’ve ever had predicting across the categories.

Just hours after “The Bear” star Jeremy Allen White won his first career Golden Globe on Tuesday night, he found himself nominated at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Wednesday morning. Should he prevail there, too, White would claim the exact same Best Comedy Actor SAG trophy that William H. Macy won three times for “Shameless” in 2015, 2017 and 2018. It’d be the ultimate poetic justice for TV fans, of course, as Macy and White played an estranged father and son, Frank Gallagher and Lip Gallagher, on the Showtime dramedy for 11 years.
There are more similarities between “The Bear” and “Shameless” than you might realize at first glance. Both shows are dark comedies that take place in Chicago, Illinois and center on protagonists dealing with troubling family issues. On “The Bear,” White plays renowned chef Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, who returns home after his brother commits suicide. And on “Shameless,” the Gallagher...

With the last two years of showbiz awards being very erratic, 2022 seemed to be the first year in a while where everything was back to normal, or at least the closest thing to it. In the midst of a still ongoing pandemic, we managed to get a full slate of entertainment awards ceremonies and, with that, an entire slate of amazing moments that would define the year. Below, 15 of our site’s editors and contributors explain which moments were the best for them.
Many of these moments came from specific wins. Matthew Stewart was incredibly moved by Troy Kotsur’s Best Supporting Actor win at the Oscars. Daniel Montgomery loved “Squid Game” getting rewarded at this year’s Emmys and bringing attention to international productions. David Buchanan was over the moon when the recent revival of “Company” won five Tony Awards only seven months after the passing of the show’s composer,...

“We are doing our annual tradition,” declares Gold Derby managing editor Chris Beachum, who is joined by senior editor Rob Licuria to debate their final predictions for all 25 Primetime Emmy categories. “I don’t know how many years it’s been! Probably 15 or so that we do 25 categories in 25 minutes,” Chris proclaims about their long-standing annual tradition of dedicating a minute to each category announced on Emmy night, which this year means it’s 25 categories in 27 minutes. The NBC ceremony will be hosted by comedian and actor Kenan Thompson, with festivities commencing at 5 p.m. Pt on Monday, September 12.
