The MCU is gearing up to introduce the Mutants, something we’ve known since Disney acquired Fox. While you could argue that the Mutants have already made a few brief appearances, the X-Men themselves haven’t yet entered the MCU.
Although their full debut is still some time away, Marvel has promised a major introduction in the future.
Even though we don’t know all the details, it’s clear that Feige and Marvel are taking their time to get it right. The X-Men’s arrival in the MCU will be a major moment and will shape the franchise for years to come.
Given the importance of this debut, fans are understandably anxious about who Marvel will cast. With an already-established X-Men universe, comparisons between the old and new casts are inevitable.

The MCU will soon welcome the Mutants. This is nothing new, of course, as we have known this since Disney acquired Fox. You may argue that the Mutants have already made multiple appearances in the MCU, but the X-Men haven’t. Although it will take some time for them to do so, we have been promised a significant debut in the future.
Now, even if we are unaware of all the specifics, we are confident that Feige and Marvel want to do this correctly because the X-Men’s MCU debut will be significant and will influence the franchise for years to come.
With that in mind, it’s easy to see why fans are anxious about Marvel’s casting choices. The X-Men already have an established fictional universe, so comparisons with the MCU version are inevitable. While we still have no idea who will be cast, Reddit user Time-Classroom-2442 has...

As Amanda Seyfried anticipates a return to one of her most beloved roles, the fantasy casting for her new co-stars has begun.
While sharing an update on a potential third installment in the Mamma Mia! movie musical franchise, the Oscar nominee addressed the likelihood that Sabrina Carpenter could join the cast.
“Mamma Mia 3, let’s go baby,” Seyfried told ABC News, crossing her fingers for luck. “Everybody says it’s gonna happen. But I mean, I haven’t seen a script.”
After Carpenter sang the musical’s title track by Abba at a recent Madison Square Garden concert, Seyfried agreed the Short n’ Sweet artist could “technically” play her character Sophie’s daughter in an upcoming followup.
Although Seyfried is only 13 years older than Carpenter, the interviewer noted that “age is sort of a forgettable construct” in the franchise after Cher played Meryl Streep‘s mom in the previous film,...

Measured against recent Toronto Film Festivals, business at TIFF 2024, which wrapped on September 15, was average.
There was one big studio deal: Paramount Pictures snatching up worldwide rights outside of Germany-speaking Europe for Tim Fehlbaum’s September 5, a newsroom thriller on the 1972 Munich Olympics terrorist attacks, which is already being touted a major awards contender. There were a handful of indie pickups, with A24 nabbing Brady Corbet’s buzzy period epic The Brutalist and Andrew DeYoung’s bro-com Friendship starring Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd, and Samuel Goldwyn Films taking North American rights to Nick Hamm’s Medieval actioner William Tell starring Claes Bang. And there was a major streaming acquisition as Hulu snatched up TIFF opener Nutcrackers, a family comedy from David Gordon Green featuring Ben Stiller.
There were also a few deals inked ahead of the festival, with Sony Pictures Classics scooping up key world rights to Laura Piani...

A strong cast led by Joseph Gordon-Levitt are not enough to bring supense to a story where the local hitman advertises in a paint store
This under-par comedy noir from screenwriter Mike Vukadinovich and director Potsy Ponciroli feels like a script that the Coen brothers might have taken on while in one of their slack periods – and not just because Coen regular Tim Blake Nelson is in it.
Himesh Patel plays Will, a nervous rookie cop with a pregnant wife, Paige (Lily James); he has a new job in a sleepy, sweet little town; his cop partner is to be hardbitten cynic Terry, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, with whom he has a “training day” relationship on their first day out on patrol. The fall film festival season may still be kicking right along, but, with the conclusion of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival this past weekend, the film landscape for this season (and beyond) has come into clearer focus.
Big questions, however, remain: What films is everyone going to be talking about in one, two, six months? Who won big and might see even more awards glory come their way soon? Who was there? And how can film fans who couldn’t make it north for the lauded festival see the films we’re all buzzing about? We’ve got you covered, as we run through some of our favorite reviews, stories, and interviews from this year’s TIFF.
Which Film Won the People’s Choice Award?

You always hear about whistleblowers––those who smuggle documentation for the benefit of the public out of corporations trying to make or save a buck at the expense of human lives––but what about those who decide the risk is too great? They’ve procured the papers. Got out of the building. And now find themselves victims of escalating harassment with nowhere to turn. Maybe they’re offered a settlement to have it all go away, but can they trust someone willing to bury evidence that proves culpability for the extinguishing of innocent lives? These are scientists, not lawyers. Paper-pushers, not security operatives. They need help.

A striking legacy of 9/11 is how the United States government exploited national grief and panic to pass aggressive legislation stripping Americans of privacy rights. The Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act, also known as the Patriot Act, was passed in October 2001, 45 days after the Twin Towers fell, and gave the government “roving surveillance authority.” Agents wouldn’t need a warrant to tap email communications or phone calls, or to monitor credit reports and banking history. Cloaked in the language of safety, the Patriot Act turned every person into a suspect. In the decades since, Americans have become so used to forfeiting privacy that we willingly opt-in to technologies and resources asking for data.

David Mackenzie is full of deceit. His movies, not him.
Mackenzie can lure you with the cunningness of an illicit couple, played by Tilda Swnton and Ewan McGregor, in his 2003 drama Young Adam. “Give us a come-hither look,” I remember him instructing Swinton on a barge berthed on the Forth and Clyde Canal in Scotland.
Treachery of a different kind is afoot in his latest film Relay, which had its world premiere Sunday at TIFF.
The chicanery is there. There’s no sex, but there’s seduction.
The audience is being seduced too; we’re being lulled. You’ve been warned.
The two protagonists are played by Riz Ahmed and Lily James, at the top of their game. And what delectable games they play.

Sam Worthington plays a corporate enforcer in the new whistleblower thriller “Relay,” and discussed the role New York plays in the film — the actual New York City and its energy. “I’m glad that we actually got to shoot in New York, and not like, say, Toronto for New York, or somewhere like that, which normally happens,” Worthington told Steve Pond at TheWrap’s 2024 TIFF Studio sponsored by Moët & Chandon and Boss Design.
The film is directed by David McKenzie, who directed the Oscar-nominated “Hell or High Water” and previously worked with Worthington on FX on Hulu series “Under the Banner of Heaven.”
“Relay” explores the world of corporate whistleblowers and the secretive relay centers that allow for anonymous communication. The film stars Riz Ahmed as Tom, a “fixer” whose specialty is brokering major payoffs between corrupt corporations and the individuals who threaten to ruin them. He’s careful...

Sharp, fun, and smartly entertaining from its first scene to its final twist, David Mackenzie’s “Relay” is an old-fashioned movie about an old-fashioned guy. The movie is a modern paranoid thriller that harkens back to the genre’s ’70s heyday (though the far more recent “Michael Clayton” might be its most obvious point of reference). The guy is an alcoholic Muslim named Ash, who became a renegade deal broker after drinking away a more conventional life.
His stocks-in-trade are whistleblowers — he works to keep them safe from the companies who want them dead. His methods are analogue — Ash exclusively communicates with brave clients and evil conglomerates alike through a talk-to-text relay service designed to help deaf people make standard phone calls. Nobody ever hears his voice or learns his name; he hammers a message into his teleprinter, and a team of very confused (but unfailingly professional) operators then speak...

Toronto film festival: Hell or High Water’s David Mackenzie attempts to recall 70s paranoid thrillers in a sleek, suspenseful watch before it makes a wrong turn
In the wrong, or maybe just less right, hands, the set-up of pacy thriller Relay could have been the set-up for a standard-issue network pilot. A nifty fixer, who finds unique and unexpected ways to assist reluctant whistleblowers as they hand back damning documents, feels like a character who could lead multiple seasons of a solid, if stodgy, NBC drama. But the Scottish writer-director David Mackenzie, whose primary credits include Starred Up and Hell or High Water, is aiming a little higher, something closer to the paranoia and laser focus of 70s and 80s thrillers like The Conversation and Blow Out (something he has made reference to in early press).

David Mackenzie’s new thriller Relay explores murky moral questions as it introduces audiences to Ash, a discreet intermediary who helps whistleblowers safely expose corporate corruption. Played silently yet compellingly by Riz Ahmed, Ash finds his strict protocols tested when scientist Sarah enlists his skills to broker a deal with the biotech firm she’s blown the whistle on.
As a recovering addict, Ash understands well the dangers others face when standing up against power. Operating through ingenious means like the Tri-State Relay phone service, he keeps dangerous distance from both clients and adversaries. But a spark grows between Ash and Sarah that challenges his solitary ways. How can he help her without compromising the security keeping him and others alive in this shadowy world of entrenched threats?

About thirty minutes into David Mackenzie’s latest, the clever throwback thriller “Relay,” something funny happens. Or doesn’t happen, really, as that’s about the moment when keen audiences will notice that our protagonist, played by Riz Ahmed, hasn’t yet said a word to another person.
Named for the message relay services that help people with a hearing or speech disability to make and receive telephone calls via text (and a human relay operator as ironclad intermediary), “Relay” is the latest film in Mackenzie’s ever-shifting filmography, this one a modern spin on the kind of paranoid thrillers that were so common during the ‘70s.
“I can’t remember whether it was in the early drafts, but it’s been like that for quite a while in ours,” Mackenzie said during a recent interview with IndieWire. “It was just the idea that this person is doing everything without...

Over the last six years, New Jersey has become a top destination for film, television and, most recently, reality program production.
The state’s Film and Digital Media Tax Credit Program launched in late 2018 under the leadership of Gov. Phil Murphy after being indefinitely suspended in 2010. Initially, under Murphy’s tax credit initiative, the annual cap for film and television production was $75 million. Productions earned credits for up to 30% of eligible expenses and up to 35% in certain more remote areas of New Jersey. Today the tax credit has expanded to $430 million per year through 2039 and in an effort to create a more inclusive workforce, and offers an additional incentive (2% or 4%) to productions that meet certain diversity criteria.
Murphy says that reinstating the state’s film tax incentive was a no brainer.

Exclusive: Movie producers in Hollywood and London would court three-time Tony-winning director Marianne Elliott and ask her what she wanted to do. Over the past few months, a twisted killer, a nonagenarian avenger and a talk show host with a deadly interest in the occult have reinvigorated an indie film business that had been in a prolonged slump. The success of movies like “Longlegs,” “Thelma” and “Late Night With the Devil” have helped a sector of the entertainment industry — crushed by Covid, strikes and streaming — mount a box office comeback. And while it’s a long way from the arthouse heyday of the 1990s and early aughts, the turnaround is impressive.
“We’ve had some of our biggest hits to date,” says Elissa Federoff, distribution chief at Neon, the studio behind the horror thriller “Long- legs.” “And that’s because we’ve taken bigger bets on bigger-budgeted films that have the potential to reach a much wider audience.”

In “Old Henry,” director Potsy Ponciroli spilled an inordinate amount of blood on and around the porch of a frontier homestead. “And for what? For a little bit of money,” as Fargo police chief Marge Gunderson put it after solving a no-less-senseless crime a century later. Reuniting with Coen brothers collaborator Tim Blake Nelson for his second feature, “Greedy People,” Ponciroli trades the lawless West for the well-policed present-day Northeast, setting a darkly comic cash grab in the South Carolina town of Providence.
This time around, Ponciroli is directing someone else’s script, and even though the new film feels even more Coen-esque than his first, it lacks the blunt, remorseless quality that set “Old Henry” apart. That film tipped its hat to its influences; this one seems to be borrowing the whole damn uniform. Just look at the way it begins and ends with a deceptively effective female police...

Well into the new dark crime comedy Greedy People, I had to check IMDb to make sure this wasn’t some movie one or both of the Coen brothers had actually made and somehow I didn’t realize before diving in. Nope, it was Potsy Ponciroli who directed, and Mike Vukadinovich who wrote it. No Coens anywhere in sight except as the clear inspirations for this entertaining movie of which the masters behind Blood Simple and Fargo would probably approve, and might even have made at the beginning of their illustrious careers.
So get this for a plot.
New and very inexperienced cop Will (Himesh Patel) arrives in the small East Coast town of Providence for his new job as a deputy, partnered with quirky vet Terry (Joseph Gordon-Levitt). With a pregnant wife (Lily James) and their loving dog in tow it seems like a good career move. However, Will...

“Don’t kill anybody unless you have to,” a rookie cop is told on his first day on the job in Greedy People. Not long afterward, he accidentally does just that, setting off a spiral of lethal events that give the the darkly comic thriller an impressive body count. Unfortunately, the proceedings become increasingly tiresome the more the characters are killed off, with the result that despite an impressive cast, the film comes to feel like a Coen brothers rip-off.
Set on a small island town rather than the snowy Midwest, this Fargo-like tale includes a wide array of characters, nearly all of whom prove either gleefully immoral or just plain dumb. The convoluted plot is set in motion when the aforementioned cop, Will (Himesh Patel), responds to an emergency call and nearly shoots a woman (Traci Lords, giving you an idea of the film’s irreverence) simply going about her business in her kitchen.

One would think the good people at Lionsgate might be trying to hide Greedy People by quietly announcing its release in theaters this month, just last week. The Lily James and Joseph Gordon-Levitt vehicle came out on August 23rd with very little fanfare. Not to mention, August (and January) are known as the dumping grounds for films studios are ashamed of.
However, I am relieved to set the record straight: Greedy People is a bloody good time. The film is full of quirky characters, ominous motivations, and moral ambiguity, exploring how ordinary people can be driven to acts of money lust and even murder—all while maintaining the core value of these types of films, where almost no one gets away clean.

It’s easy to forget a time, not so long ago, when Joseph Gordon-Levitt seemed like one of the brightest rising stars in Hollywood. A slew of acclaimed supporting roles in Christopher Nolan movies ranging from the “Dark Knight” trilogy to “Inception” made it seem like the former child star was destined to dominate the next few decades of moviemaking with a halo that rivaled Nolan’s. But it never quite materialized that way, as Gordon-Levitt spent the late 2010s and early 2020s lying low and popping up in forgettable cameos that seemed more interested in cashing in on his celebrity status than expanding it.
It’s forgivable to have wondered, in recent years, whether his talent was overstated in the first place —but a quick viewing of Potsy Ponciroli’s “Greedy People” should quickly rectify that. Gordon-Levitt’s electrifying buffoonery is an easy highlight of the ensemble crime comedy.

Get your first look at ‘Coen brothers-style’ comedy Greedy People, starring Himesh Patel, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and more. Here’s a trailer:
Lionsgate has revealed the trailer comedic crime movie, Greedy People, starring Himesh Patel, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Lily James, Tim Blake Nelson, Uzo Aduba, Nina Arianda, Jim Gaffigan, Joey Lauren Adams and Simon Rex.
Potsy Ponciroli directs the film which opens on the 23rd August, and we have to admit, we’re more than a little intrigued by the undoubted quality of that ensemble cast. And also more than a little intrigued by Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s facial hair too (he also flirted with beard usage in this year’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F – this is turning into a trend).
Here’s the synopsis for the film:

The return of Joseph Gordon-Levitt is just getting started.
After the actor took a hiatus from Hollywood, Gordon-Levitt has starred in musical “Flora and Son,” “Super Pumped,” and “Poker Face,” all in 2023. Now, the actor is bringing back his comedic timing for darkly funny crime thriller “Greedy People.”
Gordon-Levitt plays an outrageously corrupt cop who helps convince a rookie (Himesh Patel) to steal one million dollars. The official synopsis reads: “Will (Patel) and his rogue partner Terry (Gordon-Levitt) upend their small island town when they accidentally discover one million dollars at a crime scene (of their own making). "People are dead. There's too much loss for it to just be a coincidence." Lionsgate has unveiled an official trailer for a dark comedy thriller titled Greedy People, the latest from Old Henry director Potsy Ponciroli. It's set for a release in select theaters in August, though there's not much buzz about it yet. Perhaps with more time? The "darkly comedic crime thriller" film follows the residents of a small island town who must navigate a sensational murder and the discovery of a million dollars (at the crime scene), leading to a series of increasingly terrible decisions that upend the once peaceful community. "A million dollars. A million bad decisions." Starring Himesh Patel, Lily James, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, along with Simon Rex, Traci Lords, Tim Blake Nelson, Joey Lauren Adams, Uzo Aduba, Nina Arianda, & Jim Gaffigan. This seems a bit too erratic and messy, jumping all over place with these wacky townspeople.

Venice Artistic Director Alberto Barbera said their inclusion in the program was part of a larger reflection on “a transformation” taking place around the length of “cinematic” works.
“Alongside the rise of short films, produced for social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube in particular, more and more film directors are drawn to the possibility of experimenting with the longer lengths offered by cinematographic series,” he said.

The 49th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival announced its full lineup of Galas and Special Presentations today in what is a complete embarrassment of riches as the event blasts off after last year’s actors strike with 29 titles having rights for sale.
