Once upon a time, "Game of Thrones" was the biggest television phenomenon any of us had seen in years — and then, in May of 2019, the eighth and final season concluded as we all looked around and collectively wondered what the hell happened to a once-great show. To say fans hated season 8 of "Game of Thrones" as well as the finale, "The Iron Throne," is an understatement; some people quite literally wrote a petition to HBO asking the network to do the whole final installment again so they could make it good in a second go-around, and if you ask any random viewer what they thought of the "Game of Thrones" finale, they'll probably tell you it stunk and then hold you captive in a conversation about why it stunk.
I am one of those viewers, to be perfectly clear. I friggin' loved "Game of Thrones" and yet,...

The Hollywood Reporter and SAG-AFTRA kicked off Emmys weekend in star-studded style on Friday night, toasting top TV talent at their Emmy Nominees Night event.
The celebration, sponsored by Glenfiddich, Heineken and Shake Shack, was held at the Stanley II mansion overlooking Los Angeles and welcomed some of this year’s top contenders, including Shogun‘s Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada and Baby Reindeer stars Richard Gadd, Jessica Gunning, Nava Mau and Tom Goodman-Hill. Kit Harington may be the King in the North, but off-screen, he’s more like the King of Pranks. Imagine this: you’re gearing up for a big scene in Game of Thrones, and suddenly, Kit—who you trust—tells you that your costume includes an ugly outfit complete with a fake p*nis. Panic sets in, right? Well, that’s precisely the torment Harington inflicted on his unsuspecting co-star.

Convincing them of this mortifying Costume requirement, he watched as the dread and anxiety unfolded. Harington’s ruthless prank had everyone in stitches—except the poor victim, who was not amused. Turns out, even in Westeros, the real battles are fought behind the scenes, and Kit Harington’s winning the war of pranks!

One of the many reasons why the ending of Game of Thrones was received so horribly was because the show failed to thoroughly pay off almost eight years of investment in characters that fans had grown to care about. While the plot was sloppily executed, there was a lot of nuance that was lost between the initial seasons and what greeted fans towards the end of the series.

Back when they were making Game of Thrones, showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss developed a reputation for pranking their actors. They gave a fake script to Kit Harington where Jon Snow gets horribly burned. They made Rose Leslie (Ygritte) think she was going to have to sing on camera, and in their masterpiece, they had John Bradley (Sam Tarly) go in for a costume fitting even though they never actually intended him to wear this ridiculous outfit onscreen:

Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss have a history of playing pranks on actors that they particularly like and get along with.
During season one of Game of Thrones, they famously gave their handsome star Kit Harington a fake script where his character, Jon Snow, had his face burned off — and then told him he would spend the rest of the show looking like a ghoul.
A few seasons later on Thrones, they told John Bradley that his character, Samwell Tarly, was finally getting a new costume, then sent him to a fitting where he was put into a foolish Henry the VIII-style outfit, complete with a large purple codpiece.
On their latest series, Netflix’s 3 Body Problem, the duo struck again.

You’d think after eight seasons of being under the gun during production of “Game of Thrones” that showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss would have found luxurious the extended pandemic writing process for Netflix series “3 Body Problem.” But that’s not how Benioff experienced it.
“It didn’t feel that way,” he said on a Zoom with co-creator Alexander Woo. “We were champing at the bit. We had a year-long negotiation to get the rights but meanwhile the three of us were not only doing zooms, we actually started writing just because we were so antsy to get going. And then we had [the pandemic]: it took a very long time before we finally got on set. Even though we had all that time, we still ended up having to rewrite everything. And go back for reshoots. Like a first season of any show, you’re trying to figure it out.

“As an editor, you’re the first audience,” declares “3 Body Problem” editor Michael Ruscio about the essential role that his craft plays in shaping the narrative and amplifying emotion of every scene. For our recent webchat, Ruscio (who received his first career Emmy nomination to date for the Netflix sci-fi blockbuster) adds, “You’re also needing to continually shed, detach and look at it again, and then another time, and then another time,” he explains about the painstaking process of chiseling a scene into its final product. “Sometimes you’ll take the material home where you’re not in the editing bay, and then look at it there, where you can’t touch any buttons and see how does this work for an audience? I think you do have to trust the intelligence of the audience,” he says. “We didn’t feel like we needed to spell it out and...

“It never gets old! I’m always happy to hear the news,” declares eight-time Emmy-winning music editor David Klotz about receiving his 23rd career Emmy nomination to date, this time for Netflix’s sci-fi blockbuster “3 Body Problem.” For our recent webchat he adds, “We worked really hard; myself along with the sound editing team on the show. A lot of the same crew that I worked with from ‘Game of Thrones’ were on this, so we had a shorthand between us, and also with our producers, executive producers and showrunners. I feel like that gave us a head start, creatively, jumping into it.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

House of the Dragon finally redeemed Game of Thrones for its terrible ending and it seems that the fans of the high fantasy series are getting back up on the Got train. Based on George R.R. Martin‘s book Fire & Blood, the Game of Thrones prequel series takes place 200 years before the events of the original series and it revolves around the internal conflicts of the House of Targaryen. House of the Dragon stars Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen, Rhys Ifans as Otta Hightower, Steve Toussaint as Corlys Velaryon, Eve Best as Rhaenys Velaryon, Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria, and Fabien Frankel as Criston Cole. So, if you loved the high fantasy, political drama, brutal violence, and medieval setting in House of the Dragon here are some similar shows you could watch next.

This article contains spoilers for House of the Dragon season 2 episode 2 and references characters from Fire & Blood.
Things are heating up in House of the Dragon season 2, and as the Greens and the Blacks are rocked by losses on both sides, the clash known as the Dance of Dragons shows no signs of slowing down. To compete with all these cast departures, there’s been an influx of new blood in season 2, with episode 2 “Rhaenyra the Cruel” focusing on some major players.
The show’s latest episode cued up expanded roles for Clinton Liberty’s Addam of Hull and Kieran Bew’s Hugh Hammer, both of who will become important figures moving forward. However, an altogether more important member of the Green Team was given the nod. Yes, someone finally acknowledged Daeron Targaryen.

The new Netflix series 3 Body Problem is continuing to tell the story of its first season through some “additional episodes” that the streamer has ordered, which will seemingly segue into new seasons as the show has been renewed for two more. The 3 Body Problem was the title of the first novel in Liu Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy. The second novel was titled The Dark Forest and the third was Death’s End. The first season of 3 Body Problem did pull in a sizeable audience, but the show wasn’t exactly the massive hit Netflix was hoping it would be, especially when you factor in the price tag of over $20 million per episode.

“Will operates from a place of such immense love and clarity, which I think is often common with people who are dealing with facing their own mortality,” reveals “3 Body Problem” star Alex Sharp. For our recent webchat about portraying Will Downing, a brilliant scientist diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer, Sharp recounts a day on set when “there was a line that was ended up being cut. In the bar scene at the beginning of the season, where Jack makes a comment to Will about something to do with him giving up and just being a teacher, Will responds, ‘don’t you think there’s something really noble about dedicating your life to the future?'” he recalls, adding, “that’s just Will. Then you put that person in the position of being terminally ill and it’s like almost a microcosm or metaphor for what humanity is dealing with.

Before John Bradley was cast as the brash yet lovable Jack Rooney in David Benioff, Dan Weiss and Alexander Woo’s 3 Body Problem, the actor felt that he was limited in terms of the roles being offered to him after his turn as Samwell Tarly on Benioff and Weiss’ Game of Thrones.
“I think that they realized halfway through Game of Thrones that I was nothing like that character,” Bradley tells THR. “Dan Weiss said I was so diametrically opposed to the characters I was playing, and I think they could see that I was being put into that character bracket a little bit too easily, and they knew that I could do more than that. “It is something that haunts all production designers; it’s something that requires a lot of hard work,” admits four-time Emmy-winning production designer Deborah Riley (“Game of Thrones”) about striving for authenticity and realism, ensuring the look and feel of a series never comes across as too staged or artificial. “It’s layers and layers and layers, and oftentimes it comes down to [for example] a set painter, who will just touch all of those props and touch up all of the walls, and just make sure they feel a little bit lived-in. You know, a bit of a layer of dust over everything helps,” Riley laughs during our recent webchat, adding that, “you’ve got to look at everything and squint slightly and add yourself. You never want anything to feel or look like a prop or dressing. It’s got to feel like someone to put it there for a reason.

One of Netflix’s biggest hits of this year was the sci-fi series 3 Body Problem. Adapted from the eponymous book series by Chinese author Liu Cixin, the series captured the attention of fans due to its complex story and great production, as well as the brilliantly written characters and casting choices. While a lot of fans thought it was complex and were somewhat confused by the differences between the series and the books, the series received positive reviews from critics and fans, so it was expected that Netflix would renew it for a second season. And that has just happened! We are happy to confirm that Netflix has officially renewed the 3 Body Problem for a second series!
The series has been officially summarized by Netflix as follows: “3 Body Problem explores how humanity chooses to respond to its gravest threat. Starting off during China’s Cultural Revolution in the ’60s,...

In the scientific world, there remains to this day no single solution to the three-body problem. But if you — like us — are fans of Alexander Woo and Game Of Thrones creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff's Netflix series 3 Body Problem on the other hand, it turns out the solution is really quite simple. More series! And that's exactly what we'll be getting. Check out the streamer and showrunners' official announcement of 3 Body Problem's renewal below:
Now, true to the spirit of the brain-bending sci-fi series, 3 Body Problem's renewal isn't 100% straightforward. The series' renewal comes with confirmation that Woo, Benioff, and Weiss will get to take their ambitious (and seriously pricey) adaptation of Cixin Liu’s masterful trilogy of novels "through to its epic conclusion." But precisely how many episodes and/or seasons that will take remains unconfirmed as of yet, with Netflix enigmatically saying...

Given the massive amount of resources that Netflix committed to "3 Body Problem" (not to mention the lengthy stay at the top of Netflix's Top 10 lists since its debut), it was likely only a matter of time before the streaming giant made the obvious official. That's finally happened, and now fans of one of the nerdiest, densest, and most existential sci-fi book series ever written can look forward to showrunners and co-creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo's take on what's widely considered to be the best book of the alien-invasion trilogy.
Season 2 of "3 Body Problem" is now confirmed to be in the works, as Netflix announced in a social media post on Twitter (only literal extraterrestrials would ever call it "X") earlier this afternoon. For those who haven't yet caught up on the first season, which I reviewed for /Film here, consider this your cue to...

When Game of Thrones TV series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss set out to craft an epic series called 3 Body Problem, an adaptation of a trilogy of sci-fi novels written by Chinese author Liu Cixin, for the Netflix streaming service, they were hoping to get four seasons out of the material. But when the first season of 3 Body Problem started streaming in March and pulled in a sizeable but underwhelming number of views, some began to question whether or not Netflix would want any more episodes of the big budget show. Now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Netflix has indeed ordered more episodes – but just enough to allow Benioff, Weiss, and co-creator Alexander Woo to wrap up the story. Exactly how many episodes that will be has not yet been revealed.

Netflix announced on Wednesday that it had “renewed” “3 Body Problem,” but the streamer notably didn’t refer to the extension as a “Season 2.” Instead, it appears to be more of a case of Netflix ordering “additional episodes” instead of a new, full Season 2 order.
Per a press release, the exact number of seasons and episodes will be announced at a later date.
It appears that the order will take the series to its finale, as creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss and Alexander Woo noted in a statement that they “get to tell this story through to its epic conclusion.” In an April interview with Collider, Benioff said the team would “need at least three, maybe four seasons to tell the whole story.”

Game of Thrones was the reigning TV show during the 2010s as people continued to turn up to experience the mythos of Westeros for every season. While the final season divided fans, the show as a whole is still considered one of the best epics to have graced the TV screen. Many actors from the show had their breakthrough from the series.
Liam Cunningham as Davos Seaworth in Game of Thrones
Liam Cunningham was one of the highlight performers from the series as Davos Seaworth. Series creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss had a great working relationship with the Irish actor. After the series’ end, Cunningham was committed to doing another series, but the showrunners told him to ditch that show so that he could come aboard for their next epic series 3 Body Problem.

When John Bradley met with David Benioff and D.B. Weiss about their new series “3 Body Problem,” the first thing they told the “Game of Thrones” actor is that they’d written a role in the sci-fi mind-bender for him. Quite literally. “They said, ‘It’s as close to yourself as any character you’ll ever play,’” Bradley says. “It’s kind of a daunting prospect. It’s a bit like you’re going to see yourself drawn by one of those caricature artists on the street. I’m going to find out what these highly perceptive, very bright people think I am as a person.”
The character Benioff, Weiss and co-creator and co-showrunner Alexander Woo created for Bradley — Jack Rooney, part of the “Oxford Five” of college friends and scientists at the center of the series — may not, on its face, seem all that flattering. Jack is brash and blunt,...

Kit Harington found worldwide fame and love for portraying the character of Jon Snow in the iconic HBO series Game of Thrones. Portraying the character for 8 seasons, Harington had quite a tough time adjusting to the normal world.
The character of Jon Snow is a hero through and through and Harington had quite fun while making the series. In a recent interview, however, the Eternals actor revealed that portraying heroic roles is “hard’ and that’s why he wants to play “f-cked up” characters now!

Cixin Liu’s 3 Body Problem trilogy was considered unadaptable, but D.B. Weiss, David Benioff and Alexander Woo did it for Netflix. Even though Season 1 is streaming, that doesn’t mean they’ve solved Season 2. The trio joined Deadline’s Contenders TV event Sunday to discuss the adaptation, and Weiss explained why continuing the show poses even more creative problems.
“This kind of eases you into the world of the story but the story gets really wild in the best possible way,” Weiss said. “With something that’s that wild, there are a lot of choices to be made and a lot of things to be figured out. We’ve been putting our heads together to figuring them out recently especially the past couple months.”
3 Body Problem involves scientists from around the world discovering a virtual reality video game which leads them to another intergalactic species. The story spans past and present.

The essence of Netflix’s apocalyptic sci-fi series “3 Body Problem” is contained within the immersive VR game engineered by the San-Ti aliens. Using a headset, the VR game transports the player from China’s Shang Dynasty to Tudor England to Kubla Khan’s Xanadu, recreating the chaotic destruction of the alien planet as a result of living in an unstable three-star solar system.
In adapting Liu Cixin’s acclaimed novel, showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Spoiler Alert: This story discusses major plot developments in Season 1, Episode 3 of “3 Body Problem,” currently streaming on Netflix.
When David Benioff and D.B. Weiss first approached John Bradley about starring in their new series, “3 Body Problem,” they explained that his character would in many ways be the antithesis of the role that launched the actor’s career on their previous show, “Game of Thrones.” On that series, Bradley’s Samwell Tarly was a deferential and soft-spoken nobleman forced to forsake his fortune and standing for a life of anonymity. On “3 Body Problem,” Bradley’s Jack Rooney is a brash and self-possessed working class kid who chooses to give up a career in academia to build a fortune in snack foods.
It wasn’t until Bradley received the first set of scripts for “3 Body Problem,” however, that he understood that Jack had a more fundamental difference from Sam: He’s brutally murdered.
