He was born in Queens, New York, the oldest of seven children. His father was a butcher who eventually owned a small supermarket and he grew up up working in the supermarket. He attended Le Moyne College and was intending to become a teacher and write on the weekends. After graduating in 1972, he was hired at Archie Comics.
