CBS’ Fire Country resumed Season 3 this Friday night with Part 2 of its intense Chezem Valley blaze storyline — a little over three weeks after a series of real-life wildfires began raging in the Los Angeles area.
Was there enough distance between the real-life blazes, which as of now is almost entirely contained, and the fictional firefighting to make it not hit too close to home for some?

Steven Spielberg recently reunited with his “E.T.” actor Drew Barrymore at the TCM Classic Film Festival: New York Pop-Up x 92Ny (via Total Film) and revealed that he once “flirted” with the idea of making a sequel to “E.T.” But the Oscar winner ultimately decided a sequel was not the right idea, although the studio pushed him to make one. “E.T.” opened in theaters in 1982 and became such a cultural sensation that it surpassed “Star Wars” to become the highest-grossing movie ever at the time. No wonder the studio wanted a sequel.
“That was a real hard-fought victory because I didn’t have any rights,” Spielberg said about squashing a an “E.T.” sequel. “Before ‘E.T.,’ I had some rights, but I didn’t have a lot of rights. I kind of didn’t have what we call ‘the freeze,’ where you can stop the studio from making a sequel because...

Raegon Revord played Sheldon's sister Missy for seven seasons on "Young Sheldon," and through all that time she never changed her hair. Well, that's not entirely true — sometimes she got to wear a ponytail, and for one episode she dyed her hair blonde — but for the most part Missy never changes her style, which is a little odd for such a rebellious character. Revord herself reportedly asked for a haircut multiple times throughout the series, but was denied for four years straight. It was only in season 6, after Revord suffered a traumatic car crash in real life, that she got her wish. She asked for a haircut and, after much deliberation, the showrunners decided to let her get one.
As Revord explained to Et in 2023:
"They called me over and they were like, 'Hey, we have some news for you.

In a major upset, Latvian director Gints Zilbalodis’ “Flow” won the Golden Globe for best animated feature on Sunday evening. A co-production between Latvia, Belgium, and France with a modest $3.7 million budget, “Flow” made waves simply by earning a nomination in a category traditionally dominated by big-budget studio films.
While it’s handled by Sideshow and Janus Films whose track record includes the Oscar-winning “Drive My Car,” “Flow” faced an uphill battle in the Golden Globe race, competing against two Disney/Pixar blockbusters (“Inside Out 2” and “Moana 2”), a DreamWorks feature by animation legend Chris Sanders (“The Wild Robot”), a big-budget Netflix production from Oscar-winning Aardman Animations (“Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl”) and Oscar-winning director Adam Elliot’s “Memoirs of a Snail.”
In the film, a biblical flood has submerged everything in its path, including Cat’s home. There are no humans to be found anywhere, although their material legacy remains.

Cats is a polarizing musical, but the subject material it's based on is fascinating to explore. Despite its share of detractors, the stage musical holds the title of the fifth longest-running show in Broadway history. However, when the 2019 film adaptation of Cats was released, it was considered not only one of the biggest box-office failures in history but also one of the worst-reviewed films of all time. Yes, the movie is hated, although some argue that Cats falls into the so-bad-its-good category.
Regardless of viewers' opinions on Cats, the Jellicle Cat remains an enduring source of curiosity. The Jellicle Cats are an essential part of both the movie and the musical. The story cleverly crafts a world made entirely of Jellicle Cats, and the audience is able to explore it, right from the opening number, "Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats". Oscar winner Matt Damon, now 54, has given the industry some of the most memorable hits of recent decades. The Cambridge native has shown off an exemplary range of acting with his roles in movies such as Goodwill Hunting, Interstellar, and the Bourne franchise.
While he has undoubtedly had a Hollywood career better than most, there is one area that he has yet to foray into: the superhero genre. This rings even more severe when considering the fact that Damon, as a kid, always wanted to play a superhero.
The actor even sacrificed an ankle for his dream, and while it may be too late to portray a Marvel or DC superhero, another interesting opportunity may as well present itself, in the near future. Damon may be the perfect candidate for a compelling Batman villain, in the form of Thomas Elliot, a.k.a. Hush.

Scrubs showrunner Bill Lawrence has started to provide some details about what the medical sitcom's revival could look like, and the show's history could easily be used to accommodate one of Lawrence's interesting choices. After being canceled in 2010, all nine seasons of Scrubs are about to become relevant again as the story picks up around fifteen years later. The Scrubs revival could take several different directions so early in the process, but from Lawrence's earliest declarations about his plans, it sounds as though he has a clear blueprint in mind.

Protection’s ending is all about Liz Nyles’ trying to make peace with the fact that even though she knew the whole truth, she wouldn’t be able to do anything about it. Her country and its leaders will always weigh the “national interest” above anything else. And that means they wouldn’t mind sacrificing a few lives just to protect their dirty secrets. [Spoiler Alert] So yes. In Protection’s ending, Liz did find out who really killed her lover, DS Paul Brandice, and who massacred the McLennan family under her witness protection program. But the tragedy here is, no one’s ever going to find out the truth. Liz has to take the secret to her grave, because if she dares tell a soul about it, then she’ll have to suffer the consequences. She will not only lose her job but will also put her family’s lives at risk.

Aubrey Plaza is best known for her dry humor and comedic performances in titles like Parks & Recreation, but her 2024 releases are a great reminder to check out a dark thriller titled Emily the Criminal. 2024 was a big year for Plaza. Not only did she appear in Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis, but she also portrayed Rio (aka Death) in Agatha All Along, marking her MCU debut. The show based on Agatha Harkness was one of Disney+'s more emotional releases, with Rio's presence as Death adding a grim element to the MCU entry.
Plaza also appeared in My Old Ass as the older version of the main character for a very unorthodox coming-of-age tale. After a young Elliot summons the 39-year-old version of herself, Plaza's My Old Ass character tries to steer her younger self in the right direction while also giving lessons on aging and adulthood. The only thing that might be more complicated than the time-travel mysteries on Hallmark Channel’s The Way Home is the love triangle that developed in Season 2 between Kat, Elliot and Thomas.
While Kat and Elliot kissed and fought in the present day, Kat also fought with and kissed (in that order) rum smuggler Thomas in 1814 after growing closer to the man that helped her brother Jacob survive in the past. As the season closed, Kat returned to her time and said goodbye to a vision of Thomas, thinking that he had been shot dead, but then Jacob appeared and revealed that Thomas survived.

Disney is known far and wide for the fun, family-friendly songs in their movies, but some of them are surprisingly dark. The best Disney songs teleport audiences of all ages to magical worlds of wonder far removed from the tedium of reality, making for an enchanting experience both visually and auditorily. However, some Disney songs go against the company's typical reputation with some shockingly disturbing lyrics and themes.
Some of Disney's more messed up tunes are, unsurprisingly, theme songs for the antagonists, with some of the best Disney villain songs being particularly disturbing, even for the subject matter. Others are remnants of Disney's past, reflecting the evolution of pop culture sensibilities with their outdated and often problematic humor or views. Regardless of the case, some Disney music is far from the idyllic upbeat ditties most people think of when bringing the subgenre to mind.

Margot Robbie might be one of the most sought-after names in Hollywood, but her involvement in titles like My Old Ass proves that she's also shining behind the camera. Despite not appearing in any 2024 movies, Robbie was still in the public eye, thanks to the lasting buzz from 2023's Barbie through Awards season. Even before Barbie released, Robbie had cemented herself as an A-lister, with three Academy Award nominations in the past six years alone. Robbie's breakout role, of course, came in Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street.
While it's no surprise that Robbie is a force in front of the camera, some might not even be aware that she has a production company with her husband, Tom Ackerley. LuckyChap Entertainment was founded in 2014 and produced its first movie three years later with the release of I, Tonya, which notably starred Robbie. With Scrubs season 10 now officially happening, speculation can begin in earnest about what the sitcom's revival will look like, and showrunner Bill Lawrence has already provided a huge clue in that respect. All nine seasons of Scrubs aired between 2001 and 2010, with the final season drawing much criticism and ultimately leading to the show's cancelation. Part of the reason behind this was that not every doctor in Scrubs returned for the show's last run of episodes, but there were other factors.
The original Scrubs hospital was only torn down in 2011, but Scrubs season 9 still shifted location to a traditional sound stage rather than using the immersive building where the previous eight seasons had been shot. This contributed massively to the show's new feel, causing ratings and audience reception to plummet dramatically. There are many who believe it would be best to wipe the Med School era from existence when the sitcom is revived,...

Having enjoyed spells in the Quantum Realm and at Nevermore Academy respectively in recent years, it would be fair to say that Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega are no strangers to weird shit at this point. Even so, both must've had their eyebrows raised when the script for Death Of A Unicorn, writer-director Alex Scharfman's dark new A24 comedy, was sent their way. Starring opposite Will Poulter, Téa Leoni, and Richard E. Grant, the movie sees Rudd and Ortega play middle-class father-daughter duo Elliot and Riley, who accidentally kill a unicorn and find themselves subject to the vengeful rage of said magical mammal's mother. If it sounds a bit nuts, then it looks even more cuckoo. Check out the trailer below:
Concerned vape hits. Ominous drone shots over azurite lakes. Jenna Ortega declaring "It's a fucking unicorn" as Riley, her father, and his billionaire boss' family stand over the corpse of their rarified roadkill.

Writer-producer-director Alex Scharfman’s debut is a dark comedy about a father, Elliot, and daughter, Ridley, who accidentally hit a unicorn with their car while on the way to his pharmaceutical billionaire boss’s mountain retreat. Can it be 2025 already? Seriously! A24 just released the official trailer for its upcoming dark comedy Death of a Unicorn, and if we weren't excited to see this movie before, we're definitely hooked now!
It stars Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega as a father and daughter duo who find themselves in a really tricky situation after accidentally killing a unicorn. That's an interesting plot, right? There are several more well-known actors in the cast as well that you'll be excited to see, such as Richard E. Grant, Téa Leoni, Will Poulter, Anthony Carrigan, Sunita Mani, Jessica Hynes, and Steve Park.
Alex Scharfman wrote, produced, and directed the film, which was his feature directorial debut. He had previously directed only a short film. He's best known for producing movies like Selah and the Spades, Blow the Man Down, Resurrection and House of Spoils. A24 will distribute the dark comedy.

"We need to give the little one back! Or bad things will happen!" A24 has revealed the hilarious first trailer for a bonkers new indie comedy called Death of a Unicorn, set for release sometime in Spring 2025 (final date not announced yet). This looks even crazier & weirder than anyone is expecting. Father & daughter duo Riley & Elliot hit a unicorn with their car and bring it to the wilderness retreat of a mega-wealthy pharma CEO. They decide to study and harvest it, of course, only to end up in an even worse situation. It seems this white unicorn was just a baby and the, uh, parents come back to collect it and they definitely are not happy. "As they delve deeper into their research, they discover the deadly consequences of their actions." Indeed. Death of a Unicorn stars Paul Rudd, Jenna Ortega, Will Poulter, Téa Leoni, and Richard E. Grant as the evil CEO.

We’re anxious to see how this one has turned out – and thankfully, we don’t have much longer to wait. A24 will be giving Death of a Unicorn a theatrical release in the spring of 2025, and today they have unveiled a trailer for the film. You can check it out in the embed above.

2024 really was the greatest year for animation ever.
There was an abundance of outrageously wonderful animated features released over the course of 2024 – all sorts of movies, with all sorts of animation styles and points-of-view. The fact that we left off plenty of wonderful movies, like Naoko Yamada’s brilliant, touching “The Colors Within” (which gets a wide release in January – seek it out), the French sci-fi noir “Mars Express” or mainstream gems like Mike Mitchell’s hellzapoppin’ “Kung Fu Panda 4,” tells you what a stellar year it really was.
But enough with the preamble, let’s chart the very best animated features of 2024 – from melancholic stop-motion to wondrous, widescreen computer animation and everything in-between.
DreamWorks Animation/Netflix 10. “Orion and the Dark”
2024’s most underrated movie is, incredibly, a gonzo animated feature written by Charlie Kaufman. Yes, that Charlie Kaufman. Based on the children’s book by Emma Yarlett, it...

For our most comprehensive year-end feature, we’re providing a cumulative look at The Film Stage’s favorite films of 2024. We’ve asked contributors to compile ten-best lists with five honorable mentions––many of those personal selections will be shared in coming weeks in separate features––and from tallied votes has this top 50 been assembled.
Without further ado, check out out the best in 2024 cinema below, our ongoing year-end coverage here, and return in the coming weeks as we look towards 2025.

While Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga earned less than its predecessor at the box office, it was no less creatively satisfying. There should be little hesitation in calling Fury Road one of the greatest action films of all time (if not the greatest); all the more impressive that George Miller had it in him to make Furiosa even more epic.
