After nearly four years of interminable rallies, 34 felonies, one last-minute candidate switch, two assassination attempts, and several months of crippling anxiety, the national fever dream of the 2024 campaign season has reached its end. Election Day is upon us.
Voters across the nation are lining up at their polling places on Tuesday after more than 78 million Americans cast their ballots early — a significant decrease from the pandemic-era flood of mail-in, absentee, and early voting that clogged state counts and delayed results for days. Jane Fonda has two Best Actress Oscars (and five more nominations) to her name, but over the past five-plus decades, the Hollywood icon, 86, has become far better known — and sometimes excoriated — for her political activism. She’s protested the Vietnam War, fundraised for the Black Panthers, and stood with Native Americans fighting to reclaim their land. She’s condemned violence against women and advocated for reproductive rights. She’s been jailed, spat on, and cursed at. And she’s been undeterred. These days, it’s the climate crisis that consumes her.

There is evidence that former President Donald Trump exerted pressure on Michigan canvassers to prevent the certification of the 2020 presidential election.
As reported by the Detroit News, the phone call recordings reviewed reveal that Trump personally urged Monica Palmer and William Hartmann, both Republican members of the Wayne County Board of Canvassers, not to sign the certification documents. The call took place shortly after a meeting of the Wayne County Board of Canvassers on November 17, 2020.
In the call, Trump emphasized the need to “fight for our country” and urged Palmer and Hartmann not to let others “take our country away” from them. He warned them that if they signed the certification documents it would reflect poorly on them. As a result of this pressure, Palmer and Hartmann did not sign the official statement of votes for Wayne County on that night. They later attempted to rescind their votes in favor of certification,...

Two Michigan anti-choice activist groups are working with Republican lawmakers to sue the state and block the implementation of a voter-approved constitutional amendment protecting access to abortion rights. The lawsuit, filed Wednesday and first reported by The Detroit News, speaks to the lengths the GOP is going to undermine the will of voters who remain furious over the Supreme Court’s 2022 reversal of Roe v. Wade.

Attorneys for two Michigan GOP operatives charged with participating in a “fake electors” scheme to undermine the results of the 2020 election are arguing that prosecutors’ statements calling them “brainwashed” should be grounds for dismissal of the charges against them.
Mari-Ann Henry and Clifford Frost, two of 16 individuals indicted in connection with the fake electors scheme, requested the cases against them be dropped. Each argued that comments by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel describing the defendants as having been “brainwashed” into believing former President Donald Trump had won the election, constituted...

A former candidate for Michigan attorney general endorsed by Donald Trump and a former state lawmaker have been indicted on charges related to tampering with voting machines following Trump’s loss in the 2020 election.
Matthew DePerno, who lost his bid for attorney general in 2022, has been charged with undue possession of a voting machine and conspiracy. In August of last year, Reuters reported that DePerno had orchestrated an alleged security breach of a vote tabulator in Richfield Township, Michigan, in early 2021.

Three men accused of taking part in the plot to kidnap Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer were found guilty of all charges against them on Wednesday, Oct. 26, The Associated Press reports.
Joe Morrison, Pete Musico (who’s Morrison’s father-in-law), and Paul Bellar were all convicted of supplying “material support” for a terrorist act. They were also found guilty on gun and gang charges, with prosecutors successfully arguing that the group they were a part of, the Wolverine Watchmen, was a criminal enterprise. Five years ago, Dana Nessel pulled on a royal blue blazer, plopped herself in front of a fireplace, and made her pitch to voters with an anatomy lesson: Vote for her, the candidate who doesn’t have a penis.
“When you’re choosing Michigan’s next attorney general, ask yourself this: Who can you trust most to not show you their penis in a professional setting?” she said in a 2017 advertisement. “Is it the candidate who doesn’t have a penis? I’d say so.” It was (figuratively) ballsy but...

MacOmb County, Michigan — Renee Chelian was on the first vacation she’d taken since Roe’s reversal when she learned one of the abortion clinics she operates was suddenly under legal threat. First, Chelian called her attorneys. Next, a conference call with her doctors. “The patients are terrified, they don’t know what to do — are they going to get their abortions today?” the doctors relayed. Terrified, too, were the clinic staff, concerned they would be charged for providing abortions under a 91-year-old law that hadn’t been enforced for nearly 50 years.

Matthew DePerno, the Trump-endorsed GOP nominee for Michigan attorney general, was so committed to defending the former president’s false claims of election fraud that he orchestrated the unauthorized tampering of voting equipment after the 2020 election, Reuters reported Sunday, citing court filings and public records.
The alleged security breach in early 2021 of a vote tabulator in Richfield Township, Michigan, by those working with DePerno is being investigated by the state’s Democratic attorney general, Dana Nessel. Her office is also looking into three other instances of tampering. “To ensure Michigan...

Michigan state GOP Chairman Ron Weiser took it all the way back to the 17th century when he made a remark about the assassination of Michigan’s governor, attorney general, and secretary of state — all of whom are women. Weiser called the women “witches… ready for the burning at the stake.”
“I want to make sure we have the opportunity to take out those three witches in three years from now,” Weiser said to laughter from the crowd during remarks made at the March meeting of the North Oakland Republican Club on Thursday.

Dolly Parton just got her Covid vaccine and in a fun full circle moment, it’s also a dose of her own medicine — literally, as the country music icon helped fund the research for the Moderna vaccine with a $1 million donation last year.
Dolly’s shot was administrated at Vanderbilt Health by her friend Dr. Abumrad, and during the process she taped an encouraging PSA she clearly hopes will appeal to people who might be wary of getting their own shots. “I’m old enough to get it and I’m smart enough to get it,” Parton said.
Of course, the highlight of the clip was when Dolly pitched vaccination to her fans by singing her classic song “Jolene” with the word for “vaccine” substituted in for a fun, and societally good pun. It’s as adorable as it is awesome and you can see for yourself below.

Dozens of armed reality deniers gathered outside Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson’s home over the weekend, making “threats of violence, intimidation, and bullying” in support of the president’s false claims of election fraud.
Benson released a statement describing the “threatening” scene in front of her house.

Normally, Memorial Day marks the beginning of summer, as people take the long weekend to gather with friends and family, participate in parades and solemn ceremonies honoring the nation’s war dead, and generally enjoy the start of the outdoor season.
But as we all know, this is far from normal times. And so it is with today’s messages from the Commander-in-Tweet, as President Donald Trump took a moment to remember, albeit not in the traditional way. Instead, today’s early tweetstorm was used to settle a few scores with his foes.
Michigan attorney Dana Nessel, New York Times editor Dean Baquet, RINOs, pollsters, Jeff Sessions, former President Obama, and, of course, Joe Biden were all targeted in various tweets.
We’ll add more communications as they roll in. The tweetstorm so far:
