Almost Compelling
17 October 2006
I wanted very much to like this film. I love both of the lead actors and I'm interested in the history of the French-Algerian conflict.

The story was interesting and it was great to watch parts of it unfold on videotape, as if it were footage caught in a convenience store.

I am American, but am used to the slower speed of European films. Having said that, I think this film could have benefited from a bit of editing....there is a fine line between asking us to be in the moment with the actor, camera, etc, and the feeling that we've been left behind while other movement occurs.

For those with the patience to see it through it is an interesting, if confusing, story about guilt, racism, class, etc....but I did feel as if I had been left behind by the director, much as George had left Majid behind.
