Teenage Love
8 October 2023
Yvette Andréyor and André Luguet love each other, but her father is the margrave and he not only tells her no, he orders Luguet exiled. So they decide to elope, but are caught, whereupon the margrave orders Luguet's head chopped off.

I know fathers are supposed t be tough on their daughters' suitors, but this is beyond anything I ever encountered. This one is co-directed by Gaumont stalwart Louis Feuillade, and their up-and-coming actor director Leonce Perret, and there's a lot of money ont he screen: not just costumes and settings and even outdoor shots at what looks like a real castle, but stenciled color that shows off the rich variety of the clothes and settings.

Unhappily, it's also acted too broadly and melodramatically for my taste; this sort of performance was going out of style, even if the fact hadn't penetrated entirely through Gaumont; certainly the stuff that Perret was directing on his own was restrained.
