Oliver Rayón was born just east of Mexico City, in the colonial city of Puebla, the historic, cultural, and economic capital of the state of Puebla, México. He was four years old when his single mother brought him to Southern California. He grew up first in Bellflower, and later Santa Ana, California. Oliver loved sports and played Pop Warner Football and National Junior Basketball. But music was unquestionably his first love. He sang in the choir throughout elementary school and junior high school, and won recognition as a soloist. In high school show choir, he learned about musical theater productions and ventured to audition. His first acting roles were in "Guys and Dolls" and "Babes in Arms". He went beyond school productions to perform in "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat", and played Vittorio Vidal in "Sweet Charity". All indicators seemed to point to a future in the performing arts. By the end of high school, Oliver decided on a different course. He had a talent for math and science. His inquisitive side was captivated by avionics and the promise of flight. He logically joined the Air Force ROTC to become an electrical engineer and pilot.
Performing to engage an audience proved to be Oliver's clear calling. He inevitably left the Air Force ROTC. While attending Orange Coast College (OCC), he rekindled his love of performing and ultimately set his goals firmly on acting. Being quickly cast in several college theater productions affirmed his decision. He was first cast as Estaban in the one-act play "Lynette at 3 a.m.", partly by virtue of his reputation as an actor in high school, and also because he was bilingual in Spanish and English. He was invited to audition and was simultaneously cast in two additional one-act plays. He went on to play Montano in an OCC production of William Shakespeare's "Othello", and reveled in his favorite role as Herb in an OCC production of the musical "Godspell".
A new era of acting began for Oliver at California State University, Long Beach. Hugh O'Gorman introduced him to the Michael Chekhov Technique, and helped him begin to act with specificity and focus. The high point of his training at CSULB, and indeed his entire early career, was working under the direction of Anne D'Zmura in a production of Mary Zimmerman's "Metamorphoses" (Fall 2006). Each cast member played multiple parts. Oliver played Zeus, Erysichthon, Cinyras, and others. Coaching from William Francis McGuire in voice, diction, and text exploration was invaluable to his performance in the play and beyond. Working with D'Zmura gave him insight into the art of directing, and vision for a career beyond acting. Oliver added the role of Shalva, the Adjutant in Bertolt Brecht's "The Caucasian Chalk Circle" to his list of CSULB theater credits (Fall 2007). Rounding out his college training, Philip Charles MacKenzie helped him to strengthen his grasp of technique and craft and translate it to an on-camera environment. His college career ended with a BA in Theater Arts from CSULB (June 2007).
Oliver's artistic and professional standards were largely shaped by his training at The Actors Center in New York City (Summer 2006). The intensive schedule and rigorous work cemented his commitment to the craft of acting. The instructors were all masters in their fields of specialization. Oliver studied Fitzmaurice Voicework with Grace Zandarski, Balinese mask work with Per Brahe, movement with Felix Ivanov, and scene study with Scott Freeman, who guided him towards a realistic acting style that he now considers to be second nature. Acting ideally gives Oliver opportunities to tell stories that deeply impact audiences. As a student of filmmaking, he counts John Cassavetes, Guillermo del Toro, Pedro Almodóvar, Marlon Brando, Katharine Hepburn, Anthony Quinn, Meryl Streep, and Daniel Day-Lewis among his many influences. He learned piano as an adult and makes music in his spare time.
Adaptable to acting on stage, television, and film, Oliver's credits reflect his commitment to versatility and craft. Some of his early roles were on local-market TV shows [The Heartbreak Cafe (1997), Secretos (2004)]. Followed quickly by star billing in short films that became a part of the film festival circuit [Good Day LA (2007), Lawnchairs & Grappling Hooks (2008), Vlad & Antoinette (2008), New Filmmaking (2009)]. Along with a stint as a recurring character on the Univision telenovela No Me Hallo (2011). His latest TV appearances have come on the long-running daytime soaps General Hospital (1963), Days of Our Lives (1965), The Bold and the Beautiful (1987), the crime drama spin-off Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders (2016) and the comedy Workaholics (2011).
Fluency in two languages gives him depth and authenticity in his personal and professional roles. Being multi-ethnic (Mexican, Spanish, German) lends credibility to the diversity of characters he plays. He has convincingly played the Latin romantic with a passion for the paranormal [Paranormal Incident (2011)], the all-American assistant left in charge of a frightening turn-of-events [Reality Terror Night (2013)], and an Italian heavy infected by mutated creatures [Stem Cell (2009)], among others.
His principal role in the star-studded play revival "La Victima", in the company with esteemed actors Lupe Ontiveros, Sal Lopez and Geoffrey Rivas under the skillful direction of José Luis Valenzuela, was his first foray into professional theater. Other high points in his diverse stage career include the touring production of the passion play "Viva Cristo Rey," directed by Ángel Durán & the immersive theatrical experience "Accomplice: San Diego" written and directed by Tom Salamon for the prestigious La Jolla Playhouse.
Oliver continues to add leading and supporting roles in a range of independent feature films like In Transit (2018), Spermicide (2014) and Mega Summer Hit: A Slam Dunkumentary (2014). He also appears in a number of films that were in rotation on the SyFy Channel, including War of the Worlds 2: The Next Wave (2008), Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008), 2010: Moby Dick (2010) and Silent Venom (2009).
His most prominent work came alongside the venerable Lin Shaye in the indie thriller, Room for Rent (2019), written by Stuart Flack and directed by Tommy Stovall. And most notably in Doc Holliday's Revenge (2014), a Western feature film by Lionsgate & Rapid Hearts Pictures starring Tom Berenger and Eric Roberts, where he played the infamous Florentino "Indian Charlie" Cruz. Oliver's acting endeavors have recently led him to produce his own content where he collaborated with collegemates Thomas Kellogg, Kyle Newacheck and Ryan Max O'Melia to co-create the dramatic web-series Studio City Kings (2016).- Actor

Multitalented María Elena Velasco is Mexico's greatest comedienne. La India María, the hilarious, likable indigenous woman she created and played, is the most successful female movie character in the history of Mexican cinema; her comedies broke box office records and remain widely popular. She also had her own comic book, recorded a couple of albums, starred in a stage show and a sitcom.
María Elena Velasco Fragoso was born in the Mexican city of Puebla. Her family moved to Mexico City to get medical help for her father, who became seriously ill. After her husband passed away, Mrs. Velasco decided to stay in the Mexican capital. María Elena and her younger sister, Susy Velasco, eventually found work in show business.
The beautiful and curvaceous María Elena began her career as a dancer in variety shows. She then started working as an actress on stage, playing the serious counterparts to comedians Fernando Soto "Mantequilla", Adalberto Martínez "Resortes", Manuel Medel, and José Jasso. Around the same time, she married actor Julián de Meriche and made her debut on the big screen with small roles in México de mis recuerdos (1963), Los derechos de los hijos (1963), and El revólver sangriento (1964).
La India María, the character that finally made her a star, was inspired by the indigenous street vendors who sold fruit on San Juan de Letrán Avenue in central Mexico City. María Elena's new comedy sketch based on those women was overwhelmingly popular at the Teatro Blanquita. The highly amusing character successfully transitioned to television. Her frequent appearances in TV shows such as Domingos espectaculares (1969) and Siempre en Domingo (1969) led to a film career.
Fernando de Fuentes hijo produced her first blockbuster, Tonta, tonta, pero no tanto (1972). María Elena returned to television as the main star and host of the variety program Revista musical Nescafe (1972). La India María continued to triumph at the box office with her adventures as a vendor of healing water in Pobre, pero honrada! (1973), a troublesome nun in La madrecita (1974), a mayor of a small town in La presidenta municipal (1975), and the guardian of a rich Shih Tzu dog in El miedo no anda en burro (1976).
La India María often finds herself in zany situations. She flies a helicopter in Sor Tequila (1977), is seen as a good luck charm in Hard but Sure (1978), and masquerades as a rich society woman in The Little Midwife (1978). Her character travels to the US for the first time in Okey, Mister Pancho (1981). She won Mexico's equivalent of the Golden Globe Award for her performance in He Who Don't Run, Fly! (1982), her final collaboration with Fuentes.
In the early 1980s, María Elena signed a new contract with Antonio Matouk. Matouk gave her more artistic freedom and produced The Feathered Coyote (1983) and Neither Chana, Neither Juana (1985), the first India María movies she directed. Her son, Iván Lipkies, produced her first independent feature film, Neither of Here, Neither of There (1988). Six years later, she found theatrical success reprising her India María role in the stage comedy México canta y aguanta (1994), for which she won the Mexican Theatre Critics Association's Celia Montalván Award.
After a long absence from the small screen (she had been blacklisted for many years for joking about the expensive vacations of Mexican presidents), La India María came back with her own sitcom, ¡Ay María qué puntería! (1998), and several guest appearances. She wrote the screenplay for her penultimate screen comedy, The Delicacies of Power (1999), a political satire in which she plays twin sisters. It was directed by her son and produced by her daughter, Ivette Lipkies.
Las delicias del poder was such a success that María Elena planned another India María movie, but the project was eventually postponed. In the meantime, the Lipkies-Velasco family adapted William Shakespeare's Othello as Huapango (2004). Iván was the director and María Elena and Ivette (credited as Ivette Lipkies) played supporting roles. The script earned the three of them an Ariel Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
La India María made her long-awaited comeback in the comedy The Daughter of Moctezuma (2014), a thrilling adventure fantasy. Eduardo Manzano, another iconic Mexican comedian, was cast as her grandfather and the two sang the movie's theme song, which she also wrote. Sadly, María Elena passed away several months after the premiere and this movie turned out to be her final work.- Actor

One of the most popular comic actors of Mexican cinema and television, Gaspar Henaine (better known as "Capulina") was the son of a hotel owner. His father, Antonio Henaine -born in Lebanon to Lebanese parents- wanted him to follow in the hotel business. Nevertheless, Gaspar went to pursue an artistic career, moving from his native town in Puebla to Mexico City. He started off with the musical trio "Los Excéntricos del Ritmo" in the early 1940s, and years later he formed his own group, "Los Trincas". Capulina's first musical performances were in small theaters and marquees. After a relative success, Capulina had his first great opportunity at the XEW (now Televisa S.A. de C.V.), one of the biggest and most important radio and television networks in Latin America, alternating with comedic performances at "Teatro Blanquita". In theater he continued singing and playing the guitar along with important artistic figures of the time. His first appearances in movies were playing music with his old companions at "Los Trincas". One of them would become his long-time partner Marco Antonio Campos "Viruta", with whom he later formed one of the most famous comedy duos in Mexican cinema and television, "Viruta y Capulina". They're considered by many critics as the Mexican version of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. There was only a little difference: Viruta, the skinny one, was the smart guy and the "brain" of the duo, who suffers all the gags from Capulina, the fatty one and his sidekick. Capulina received punishments from Viruta, such as pinches and smacks on the head, using Capulina's own holed black hat. Viruta and Capulina's style was of a very particular slapstick comedy, in which the former had a coward and witty personality, including a great variety of mannerisms (trembling body, quivering voice). Capulina's trademarks were also his large mustache and a gap-toothed smile. These comic routines made them very famous in their first films, such as La sombra del otro (1957), Se los chupó la bruja (1958), Muertos de miedo (1958), etc. Viruta and Capulina combined work in movies and television, appearing in Cómicos y canciones (1956) program, during the 1950s and 1960s, a night television program (the most famous at the early days of Mexican television). In this program both had versatile performances, where the funny couple made their comic routines (written by future comedian actor Roberto Gómez Bolaños), singing and playing the guitar, along with famous singers like Hermanas Navarro (Rosina Navarro and Socorro Navarro), rock and roll groups, and other fellow colleagues, like "Los Polivoces" (whom made funny impressions of Viruta and Capulina), among others. But the old couple finished their mutual work and the separation was inevitable. By the mid-1960s each one developed their own separated careers in cinema during the following years. There are many speculations about the case: Capulina was having more popularity with their fans, they weren't called by producers anymore, etc. Capulina earned the nickname of "King of White Comedy". The most popular movies from this stage were Mi padrino (1969), Santo vs. Capulina (1969) (alongside Mexican B-movies star and wrestler El Santo), El hermano Capulina (1970), El investigador Capulina (1975), etc. Gaspar Henaine never abandoned his musical career, recording nearly 12 albums and memorable songs for children like "Las rejas de Chapultepec". He continued having a very high activity in theater, acting in comic plays and making stand-up comedy. In the late 1980s, Capulina enjoyed a television revival in Televisa, with Las aventuras de Capulina (1989) program, although this project lasted only a few years and didn't has the comic punch from the past, alternating with another Mexican wrestler, Tinieblas and his little shaggy partner, Alushe. By the early 1990s, Capulina started out a very ambitious project in the entertaining industry with "Capulina's Circus". He hosted the show and made clown routines, during long tours in many cities of Mexico, retiring from the show business many years later. He appeared in sporadic interviews for the press and television documentaries until his death, at 85.- Cayetano Arámburo was born in Teziutlán, Puebla.
