Just after World War II, an American takes a railway job in Germany, but finds his position politically sensitive with various people trying to use him.

Jacob, a self-styled private investigator working out of his younger brother's auto salvage yard, sees a chance to make a quick kroner when he meets Finn, a simple chap on the dole. He convinces Finn's social worker to buy Finn a partnership in the PI business. He then sets out to train Finn as his assistant. Can these bumbling fellows figure out which woman she is (all cult members have forsaken their old names) and get her out without coming to the attention of the well-muscled guards? To be able to pay for the house within one month, they must swindle one million kroner from somebody. Charles befriends wealthy financier Blaskenberg and starts his confidence trick.
