- Just after World War II, an American takes a railway job in Germany, but finds his position politically sensitive with various people trying to use him.
- Jacob, a self-styled private investigator working out of his younger brother's auto salvage yard, sees a chance to make a quick kroner when he meets Finn, a simple chap on the dole. To be able to pay for the house within one month, they must swindle one million kroner from somebody. Charles befriends wealthy financier Blaskenberg and starts his confidence trick.
