Midway through the first big budget Batman film in 1989, Jack Nicholson’s Joker takes a moment to pout. The title character has just run off in the Batmobile while Mistah J stands by stunned and dejected. Finally he even laments, “Where does he get those wonderful toys?”
The irony of this scene is that, sure, the Batmobile is cool (especially that model), but for generation after generation, the man in the purple suit is always the one audiences savor playtime with. Whether it’s Nicholson hamming it up for ‘80s audiences, Heath Ledger vamping like a rock star from hell, or Joaquin Phoenix turning Travis Bickle into a clown, it seems our hearts are always won over by the guy with green hair. Consider that the Joker is one of only three roles that has produced multiple Oscar winners—putting Ledger and Phoenix into elite company with Marlon Brando and...

While most kids were going through elementary school, Shirley Temple was becoming the biggest movie star in America. Her talents as a performer and prepubescent charisma delighted audiences of all ages. And Fox leveraged Temple’s image to cultivate a brand around the actor in a way that was rare for the time.
Temple made a lot of money for the people around her. But she didn’t get to keep most of it. Her parents took control of the majority of her earnings. And their mismanagement of Temple’s funds resulted in the loss of millions of dollars.

Temple was only three when she made her first steps into the entertainment industry. Her parents Gertrude and George took her to classes at Meglin’s Dance School in Los Angeles. Temple’s performances in the class caught the attention of Charles Lamont,...

If 2021 has been a calvacade of bad decisions, dashed hopes, and warning signs for cinema’s strength, the Criterion Channel’s monthly programming has at least buttressed our hopes for something like a better tomorrow. Anyway. The Channel will let us ride out distended (holi)days in the family home with an extensive Alfred Hitchcock series to bring the family together—from the established Rear Window and Vertigo to the (let’s just guess) lesser-seen Downhill and Young and Innocent—Johnnie To’s Throw Down and Orson Welles’ The Magnificent Ambersons in their Criterion editions, and some streaming premieres: Ste. Anne, Lydia Lunch: The War is Never Over, and The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love.
Special notice to Yvonne Rainer’s brain-expanding Film About a Woman Who . . .—debuting in “Female Gaze: Women Directors + Women Cinematographers,” a series that does as it says on the tin—and a Joseph Cotten retro boasting Ambersons,...

Unprecedented times call for innovative measures and U.K. public service broadcasters are exploring a range of means to keep a nation in lockdown engaged.
The BBC’s extremely popular “The Graham Norton Show,” for example, will be filmed at the host’s (pictured) home for the first time in its 13-year history with virtual guests, rather than in a studio setting with an audience.
Speaking to Variety, BBC director of content Charlotte Moore describes “an ever moving challenge in trying to work out how to keep our services going.”
“We want to make sure we keep as much of our services going for people. Because, obviously, the need to feel connected, to feel you have information that is relevant to your local area when people are isolated either as families or on their own (is important). Particularly (for) our elderly audience, we need to really make sure that they understand what’s going on,...

When a certain someone worries publically about caravans reaching our southern border, he may be thinking about an invasion of Mexicans farther north where they are stepping over his plaque on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, scooping up Oscar nominations and absconding with electroplated gold.
The leaders of this caravan are Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu, Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuaron, multi-hyphenate filmmakers who have amassed 22 Oscar nominations among them and a total of nine wins. They have won four of the last five best director Oscars, with Cuaron expected to make it five out of six for “Roma,” and they have won two of the last four best picture awards, with “Roma” favored to make it three out of five.
These self-labeled Three Amigos are also looting the vaults of the studios and financial institutions pumping millions into the making of their movies and paying them millions to do it.

Yalitza Aparicio, 24, was an aspiring pre-school teacher with a degree in education when her sister decided to go to a casting call at a local community center for a movie that was being partly shot in their town of Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca, in Mexico.
Turns out, her sister wanted her to audition, instead. “She was very, very happy for me that they cast me. Even though I’m not a talkative person,“ Aparicio said with the help of a translator at last month’s Middleburg Film Festival in Virginia.
The movie turned out to be “Roma,” a Netflix film that could make history as the first Best Picture nominee – and perhaps winner – to be produced by a streaming site. It would also be the only fully subtitled feature to ever win. Princess Charlotte is only 2, but she knows what she likes. During a visit to Hornsey Road Children's Centre in London on Tuesday, Kate Middleton, who is currently pregnant with her third child, revealed that her daughter loves the color pink while chatting with a young girl named Nevaeh Richardson-Natiko. "She asked me what my favorite color is," the 6-year-old told reporters after her encounter with the famous royal. "I said it was pink and she said that's Charlotte's favorite color too." The little princess's favorite color shouldn't come as a big surprise though. Aside from wearing a pink dress during the family's official tour of Poland and Germany, she also matched with her mom when the whole family watched Trooping the Colour earlier this year. You know what they say: like mother, like daughter.

Whether or not you liked Jared Leto as the Joker in Suicide Squad, you can't argue with a $746 million in worldwide box office. That 2015 movie once again reminded Warner Bros. that the Clown Prince of Crime is their most bankable screen villain, and not even anemic reviews could keep audiences away. For that reason, it's no surprise we are on the verge of getting our first solo Joker movie, this time starring Joaquin Phoenix in a completely original concept from director Todd Phillips and producer Martin Scorseese.
The Joker is a character historically infamous for his theatricality; he’s a scion of chaos, the maestro of malevolence, and a twisty yin to Batman’s straight-laced yang. He’s a comic icon that was...

Shirley Temple Black, the one-time child star whose precocious acting ability, cheery demeanor and innocent face made her one of the biggest draws of the 1930s, died on Monday night at her home in California. She was 85.
From the age of six to ten Shirley Temple was once one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. While the rest of the nation was mired in the Great Depression Shirley Temple sang and danced her way through it in films such as Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, Little Miss Marker, Heidi and The Little Princess.
Shirley Temple was born on April 23, 1928 in Santa Monica, California, the third and youngest child (and only girl) of George Francis Temple, a bank teller, and Gertrude Krieger, a supremely willful stage mother (Temple dedicated her autobiography to her). Her parents noticed an innate sense of rhythm and extroverted presence as early as eight months in Shirley. She was put in acting classes by the age of three and was starring in a series of cloying shorts in 1932 and ’33, as well as assaying bit parts in larger films.
It was her performance of “Baby Takes a Bow” in 1934’s Stand Up and Cheer, a film that debuted in May, that thrust her into prominence. She was obviously a natural in front of the camera with a wide range of talent. She could sing. She could dance. She could act. Fox signed her on and, by the end of the same year, which also held the hits Little Miss Marker and Bright Eyes (where she famously sang “On the Good Ship Lollipop”) and several other roles, Shirley Temple was a star. A mere nine months after Stand Up and Cheer hit screens, in February of 1935, she received a special “Juvenile Award” at the Oscars “in grateful recognition of her outstanding contribution to screen entertainment during the year 1934.”
For the next few years the public couldn’t get enough of her. Exhibitors named her the top box-office attraction of 1935 (when she sang “Animal Crackers” in Curly Top) - 1938. A non-alcoholic drink was named after her (a mixture of ginger ale and grenadine) and a cottage industry sprang up around her likeness including dolls, coloring books, and dress lines. She tapped alongside Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, in The Littlest Rebel, starred in John Ford’s Wee Willie Winkie and several Allan Dwan films, Heidi and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. (Graham Greene’s review of Winkie, where he accused Temple of being an adult impersonating a child, and where he impugned the motives for older men’s attraction to her, caused such an uproar that Night and Day, the magazine in which the review was published, shortly thereafter was bankrupted and folded.)
Temple was the natural pick to play Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz but Fox wouldn’t loan its star out so Judy Garland got the role. It was a turning point in both their careers.
As she matured, Hollywood and the audience, now veterans of World War II, and seemingly unable to reconcile the fact that the cherubic star had become a comely young woman, looked elsewhere. Temple was no longer the compliant child but a willful ingénue. After two flops she canceled her contract with Fox and moved over to MGM but fared no better there.
At 17 she wed fellow actor John Agar but the marriage fell apart five years later. Temple, now divorced with a child, lost her interest in movie-making. The audience too moved on. She became a cautionary tale in many circles, an example of the loose morals and bad ends destined for Hollywood types. Her talent agency, MCA, unceremoniously dropped her and Temple’s meteoric career was over. She wasn’t yet 21.
Later life included several quickly-canceled variety shows but she attained a second act as a public figure and politician, even running for office in the vacant Republican seat in her congressional district. In 1968 President Richard Nixon appointed her as the US representative at the United Nations and she became an ambassador to Ghana from 1974-1976. She later also held the post of US Chief of protocol and ambassador to Czechoslovakia (appointed by President George H.W. Bush).
Shortly after her divorce from Agar Shirley Temple met and married Charles Black, a TV executive. They were married for 55 years, until his death, and had two children together.

Shirley Temple Black (1928-2014), the most iconic child star of film history who was a box office sensation throughout the 1930s, has died at age 85. Known for her dimples and perfectly-ringleted head of curls (56 ringlets, to be exact), Temple broke into the movies at only three years old, and went on to star in a series of vehicles (many of which were the VHS staples of my childhood) like "Bright Eyes," "Little Miss Marker," "Stand Up and Cheer," "The Little Colonel," "Baby Take a Bow," "Heidi," "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm" and "The Little Princess," to name only a few. More than just a cute face, Temple had a remarkable ability for song and dance routines, as exemplified particularly in "The Codfish Ball" routine she does with Buddy Ebsen in "Captain January," where she matches the limber-legged Ebsen step for step in a four minute sequence. (Watch it, below.) "The Little Princess...

Cherubic child star of the 1930s who returned to public life as a Us diplomat
From 1934 to 1938, when she was at the height of her fame, Shirley Temple (later known as Shirley Temple Black), who has died aged 85, appeared in films as a bright-eyed, curly-topped, dimpled cherub, whose chirpy singing and toddler's tap dancing were perfect antidotes to the depression. "During this depression, when the spirit of the people is lower than at any other time, it is a splendid thing that, for just 15 cents, an American can go to a movie and look at the smiling face of a baby and forget his troubles," Franklin D Roosevelt stated in 1935, referring to the world's biggest and littlest star.

Shirley Temple dead at 85: Was one of the biggest domestic box office draws of the ’30s (photo: Shirley Temple in the late ’40s) Shirley Temple, one of the biggest box office draws of the 1930s in the United States, died Monday night, February 10, 2014, at her home in Woodside, near San Francisco. The cause of death wasn’t made public. Shirley Temple (born in Santa Monica on April 23, 1928) was 85. Shirley Temple became a star in 1934, following the release of Paramount’s Alexander Hall-directed comedy-tearjerker Little Miss Marker, in which Temple had the title role as a little girl who, left in the care of bookies, almost loses her childlike ways before coming around to regenerate Adolphe Menjou and his gang. That same year, Temple became a Fox contract player, and is credited with saving the studio — 20th Century Fox from 1935 on — from bankruptcy. Whether or not that’s true is a different story,...

Despite my unfamiliarity with her work, to learn she passed away on Monday, February 10, 2014 at the age of 85 is still sad news. Temple (known as Shirley Temple Black in her private life) died of natural causes according to her publicist in a prepared statement, which also added that she died surrounded by her family and caregivers at her home in Woodside, California. Temple starred in 14 short films, 43 feature films and over 25 storybook movies in a career that spanned from 1931 until 1961. She was the recipient of an Juvenile Award Oscar at the 1935 Academy Awards and recently given a Life Achievement Award at the 2006 Screen Actors Guild Awards. The family would not disclose Temple's cause of death.
A talented and ultra-adorable entertainer, Shirley Temple was America's top box-office draw from 1935 to 1938, a record no other child star has come near. She beat out such grown-ups as Clark Gable, Bing Crosby, Robert Taylor,...

Where aren’t you Hugh? TNT has announced that its annual Christmas in Washington special will be hosted by Hugh Jackman. The holiday concert special will air on December 20th at 8:00 p.m. (Et/Pt), and will feature some very special performers, including: Anna Kendrick, Sheryl Crow, Backstreet Boys, and more.
This has long been one of my favorite holiday traditions, and has offered up some of the most entertaining performers, and all-around enjoyable evenings for years.
That tradition continues (well, quite frankly, I’m not a fan of Backstreet Boys) this year with not only some great performances, but you can’t go wrong with Hugh Jackman running your show, whatever it is. Right? I can’t wait for Sheryl Crow, Anna Kendrick is a surprisingly awesome singer, and you don’t want to miss Pat Monahan.
Catch all the info below, and let me know if you’ll be tuning in.

From a director's roundtable for The Hollywood Reporter: "I forgot that I used to do my own stuff, and I became this reader of screenplays that they were sending to me. And I started forgetting that I had a voice. It started to become more about the industry. And then I did a film that was a horrible experience, Great Expectations. That is a film that I should have not done. I passed many times, and then I ended up saying yes for the wrong reasons." Don't worry, he's still very proud of The Little Princess.

“Why do I get the feeling you’re going to be the death of me?” Obi-Wan Kenobi muses to Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars Episode II. Hahaha, do you geddit? Because later on Anakin kills Obi-Wan, but Obi-Wan doesn’t know that so him saying it now is really funny. Ha. Ha. Ha.
Of course that’s a prequel and you all know where it’s heading, but it’s incredibly emblematic of how blunt foreshadowing has become in movies. When a key plot point comes back into play the director wants to make sure everyone in the audience, even the guy more interested in his popcorn/girlfirend’s chest, knows where it comes from. It’s not overtly bad – the cracking Batman Begins repeatedly hammers home that the missing microwave emitter may actually be important – but boy is it tiring.
Sometimes though, a film can surprise you and slip...

An Oscar nominee for writing "The Fisher King," Richard Lagravenese has cultivated an ongoing reputation as a go-to source for cultivated adaptations of that the uncultivated might call "chick-lit," ranging from "The Horse Whisperer" to "The Bridges of Madison County" to "Water for Elephants." [We would never put Lagravenese in a "chick lit" corner, since "Beloved" and "The Little Princess" are clearly much more than that.] With the new teen supernatural romance "Beautiful Creatures," Lagravenese is working with material which might -- again, this would only be a gross generalization -- be thought to skew more toward female viewers, but...
