New remastered restorations of Val Lewton pictures? We’re there. This terrific double bill gives us two Lewton shockers that are in no way ‘lesser’. The progressive psycho killer picture The Ghost Ship suffered a legal setback and disappeared for almost fifty years; it’s a masterpiece of taste and tone. Bedlam is a costume picture with an ideal role for Boris Karloff, and multiple eerie moments worthy of Edgar Allan Poe. Both movies exhibit interesting storytelling techniques, too. Rko should have promoted Lewton to A pictures, as they did his collaborators Jacques Tourneur, Robert Wise and Mark Robson.

You would have to be living under a rock to not realise that a new Doctor is on the horizon, with the regeneration of Peter Capaldi’s Doctor last Christmas into Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor. It’s a regeneration of course that has divided Who fandom, with vocal fans and critics alike. Me? I’m on the fence. Although not a casting I think is a slam dunk, and with Missy having already having played with that whole female Time Lord thing, I’m not sure a female Doctor was the right thing to do right now. That being said, it has been done, she has been cast, and I’m happy to give both the show and The Doctor every chance. Remember when fans were up in arms when Matt Smith was cast because he was...

It has been nearly a year since 36 people were killed in a deadly blaze in an Oakland, California, warehouse, which was home to local artists. Now, the city is honoring the victims with a special tribute.
Artists Chris Treggiari and Peter Foucault, who lost friends in the Dec. 2 fire, designed an altar in city hall for the victims, Justin Berton, a spokesman for Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf tells People.

No, it’s not a the-day-after sequel to The Lost Weekend, but a class-act mystery-horror from 20th-Fox, at a time when the studio wasn’t keen on scare shows. John Brahm directs the ill-fated Laird Cregar as a mad musician . . . or, at least a musician driven mad by a perfidious femme fatale, Darryl Zanuck’s top glamour girl Linda Darnell.

Capcom is giving Resident Evil Revelations the remastered treatment on that latest consoles, but fans should be excited to hear that on top release dates for the PS4 and Xbox One version, both Revelations and its sequel are coming to the Nintendo Switch. Come inside to learn more!
Resident Evil Revelations started life as a Nintendo 3Ds game and turned out to be one of the more engaging games in the horror franchise in a long time. Since then it's seen a port to previous generation consoles, as well as a sequel that only arrived on PlayStation and Xbox platforms, leaving Nintendo fans (where it all started) in the lurch.
Fortunately, that's something Capcom is looking to remedy. Yesterday, they announced the Revelations remastered version (bringing the game up to a snazzy 1920x1080 resolution with some updated controls) will be arriving for PS4 and Xbox One later this month on August 29th.

John Monk Saunders is a good example of the screenwriter-as-auteur in the sense that he had a tone (mordant, tragic) and a set of concerns (Wwi aerial combat and its effects) that were consistent throughout his work, almost to the point of claustrophobia. Saunders was an airman himself, and like his characters, he just couldn't leave it behind. A recurring theme of his work is that war is not only traumatic, but addictive. Ace of Aces is a typical work: Saunders would achieve greater glory with William A. Wellman (Wings, 1927), Howard Hawks (The Dawn Patrol, 1930) and, best of all, with William Dieterle and The Last Flight in 1931. Ace of Aces is a relatively minor-league outing. Though director J. Walter Ruben delivers a few elaborate tracking shots, the film belongs mainly to the writer and the Rko effects team—Vernon L. Walker, who worked on Citizen Kane and King Kong, stitches...

It probably seemed like a typical night out to the young people that had gathered inside the space. But when a fire broke out Friday night and swept through the space, claiming the lives of at least 36 people — one of the worst fire death tolls in Oakland’s history — many are questioning the safety surrounding those kinds of parties and just who is responsible.

After The Seventh Victim‘s disappointing returns, Val Lewton and Rko clashed over their next project. Lewton wanted a comedy, provisionally titled The Amorous Ghost, as a change of pace; studio boss Sid Rogell, Lewton’s bete noir, insisted on a sequel to Cat People, which Lewton resisted. Then Rko suggested a Universal-style monster rally, They Creep By Night, reuniting villains from past Lewton pictures. Charles Koerner rescued Lewton from this absurd prospect by pitching a maritime thriller. “Call it The Ghost Ship,” Koerner ordered. Lewton also scored a big, though past-his-prime star in Richard Dix, an Oscar nominee for Cimarron (1931).

Val Lewton, Russian émigré turned horror master, was a reporter, pulp novelist and MGM publicity writer before moving into film. He spent the 1930s as David O. Selznick’s story editor, directing second unit work on A Tale of Two Cities (1935) and script doctoring Gone With the Wind (1939), warning Selznick it would be “the mistake of his life.” While not Hollywood’s most prescient man, Lewton’s professionalism earned Selznick’s respect, and their collaboration led to Rko offering Lewton a producing job in 1942.
Rko was reeling from Orson Welles’ The Magnificent Ambersons, an expensive flop forcing a refocus on low budget films. Charles Koerner headed the studio’s B Unit, envisioning a horror series inspired by Universal Studio’s successful franchises. Where Universal culled from established literature (Dracula, Frankenstein), Rko worked from Koerner’s whim: he created a title and left the filmmakers to handle trivia like plot and characters.

Aired September 27th, 2002 on Fox
Welcome to Sound on Sight’s summer look back at Firefly, the beloved yet short-lived series that aired on Fox during the 2002-2003 TV season. Every Thursday, we will revisit an episode at a time of the show’s one and only season, in the order that they were meant to be seen. The correct sequence is accurately reflected on most, if not all, streaming services that currently have the show, but for those watching via other methods, the accurate order can be found here. Now, without further ado, time to spend some time with the most entertaining group of grifters in The ‘Verse.
Where the first two episodes of Firefly are very much tinged with Western themes and focused on world building, the third installment is content with more small scale storytelling...

The ghost ship that went viral this week – due to expert theories that suggested it was carrying cannibalistic rats and drifting towards the U.K. – has likely sunk.
Ghost Ship Likely Sunk
Built in 1976 in Yugoslavia, the Lyubov Orlova drifted out to sea sometime last year during a debt scandal involving the current owners, who had neglected to pay their crew, reported NBC News. At the time, it had been moored at a harbor in Canada before a storm set it loose.
The abandoned Lyubov Orlova had been home to hundreds of rats, many of whom would likely still be alive onboard the vessel. According to experts, without any other source of nutrients, the rats would have cannibalized, eating their own.
Lyubov Orlova Headed To The U.K.?

Veteran he-man actor Steve Forrest, probably best remembered for starring in the TV series S.W.A.T., has died at 87. Forrest, who was the younger brother of the actor Dana Andrews, labored in movies for a decade, in tiny, mostly uncredited bit parts (including, among others, the 1943 Val Lewton production The Ghost Ship, Vincente Minnelli’s 1952 Hollywood expose’ The Bad And The Beautiful, and the Minnelli-Fred Astaire musical The Band Wagon) before winning a Golden Globe for Most Promising Male Newcomer for his performance in So Big (1953). Movie stardom failed to materialize, but he worked ...

Last November the South Korean ratings board Grb revealed that Capcom had filed an application to have their handheld survival-horror title Resident Evil: Revelations rated for release on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Even though the Japanese publisher has not made any announcements stating that the former 3Ds exclusive is being ported to either console, Xbox360Achievements has basically confirmed its existence by posting a list of achievements for the title.
The full list contains 1,000 Gamerscore points (which we are assuming will result in a Platinum trophy on Psn) that are spread over 50 different achievements. While not a confirmation, this does seems to suggest that the game will be a full retail release as opposed to a download only title over Xbla and Psn.
Without any official word from Capcom we are still in the dark on exactly what to expect from Revelations in regards to additional content or (more...

Since its first publication in 1983, Susan Hill’s Gothic chiller The Woman in Black has been terrorising audiences, from teenagers studying the novel in English lessons to horror aficionados like Mark Kermode, who wrote a chapter on the novel for his PhD in horror fiction. Its reputation has been subsequently enhanced by the long-running stage play, which left the author of this piece so scared, he had to be prised from his chair with a crowbar.
The most recent incarnation of The Woman in Black (our review Here) was released in cinemas on February 10th, with the backing of the reformed Hammer brand and the star power of Daniel Radcliffe in his first proper post-Potter role. It joins a ream of recent ghost stories to make it to our screens, including The Others, The Orphanage and The Awakening. What explains this resurgence for old-fashioned horror of creaks, shadows and suggestion?...

Bright Lights Film Journal editor Gary Morris introduces #74: "This issue opens with Jd Markel's enchanting exegesis of Mike Leigh's Happy-Go-Lucky, but as in Jd's previous contribution, expands into a much wider cultural critique…. In the Movies section, one of our new writers — come on down, Graham Daseler! — appears with two delightful entries, one on My Dinner with André, the other on the life and career of John Huston. Bl regular David Pike authoritatively analyzes Denis Villeneuve's disturbing feature Incendies, while Bl newbie Barry Stephenson offers a thoughtful study of ritual in Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited. First-time contributors William Anselmi and Sheena Wilson shine light on the dark side of cinema technologies in a daring piece on Inception. And two recent returnees to these cyberpages, Mark Chapman and Alex Kirschenbaum, stylishly weigh in on, respectively, the 'aesthetic of disavowal' of Haneke's La Pianiste and Scorsese's The Color of Money...

Joe Dante runs down the TCM Halloween rundown!
Of all the available outlets for classic movies, TCM leads the (admittedly small) pack in variety, invention and print quality.
Still not nearly as widely available as it should be (try finding it on hotel televisions), the brand has nevertheless firmly carved an essential niche in the cable/satellite movie landscape, allowing owner Time Warner to maximize its vast library of vintage movies culled from numerous studio sources. In fact, Time Warner owns more titles than any other entity, and lately has been forthcoming with clever marketing ideas like the Warner Archive on-demand dvd service, which has been thankfully adopted by MGM, Sony, Fox and Universal. There are more titles available to the general public than ever before, often in pristine condition.
But to love a film you have to see it, and to see it you have to know it exists.

A wiser man would have not waited to start his laundry at 9 Pm on the night before he had to drive the accursed I-5, but Lord knows I've never been that bright. So at 5 Am, I hopped in my Jetta and cruised down to San Diego. I left at this goddamned hour because usually the two hour journey is fraught with the traffic of the morning commuters plus the onslaught of nerdlingers coming to Comic-Con. Somehow, I managed to make it to San Diego by 7 Am. But my first stop wasn't the hotel or the convention center. It was a mall movie theater, to see an advanced screening of Captain America.
Like kudzu, San Diego Comic-Con has spread voraciously over the face of San Diego. Not just content to remain in the Convention Center, events have now spread to the surrounding hotel ballrooms and meeting rooms. But beyond that, the...

It's never too early to start making Halloween plans, right? If you are going to be in the Southern California area in October, check out Ghost Ship, the country's first sailing Halloween attraction. Board a ship in Orange County and set sail on a 75-minute cruise of terror. This one is definitely not for the faint of heart, as there is no escaping once you board. So what does this floating ship of horrors have in store for you? The ghost ship transports you back to the glamorous 1930s. When California became the unwitting guardians of a hundred of the most dangerous mental patients in the country, the only place safe enough was to strand them on a ship 100 miles off-shore. In perfectly still weather in 1939, the ship...

The trailer for Martin Scorsese's next film, Shutter Island, has just hit the web, and it looks terrific. Really terrific. So-good-that-even-if-it-wasn't-a-horror-film-we'd-still-be-excited terrific. But it is a horror film -- or at least a "tale of terror" -- and one that looks to showcase the filmmaker's passion for the works of legendary horror-auteur producer Val Lewton (evident in documentaries Scorsese has directed or produced, like A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies and Val Lewton: A Life in the Shadows). In fact, the trailer alone shows the influence of Lewton's Bedlam, Ghost Ship and Cat People. But filtered through the sensationalism of '70s...
