Considered a financial failure when the film was released, it has since received considerable critical praise and comparisons to classical literature. It has been likened to Shakespeare's "King Lear" and has classic Greek tragedy themes. Director Michael Mann likened it to Dostoevsky's novel "The Idiot".
The film cast includes one Oscar winner: Walter Huston; and three Oscar nominees: Judith Anderson, Beulah Bondi, and Barbara Stanwyck.
