Streaming is great, but you know what’s better? Actually owning movies. I’m talking about physical copies you can put up on a shelf and pull down whenever the mood strikes you. Besides, not everything is ready and available to stream. And that’s where Blu-rays come in. These are the new Blu-ray releases you should check out this week […]

David Hedison, an actor who appeared in Off Broadway productions by Clifford Odets and in the original version of horror sci-fi classic The Fly but is best known for his starring role in the popular ’60s adventure series Voyage To The Bottom of The Sea, died July 18 in Los Angeles. He was 92.
His death was announced by his daughters Alexandra and Serena, who were at his side when he “passed away peacefully,” the family reports.
Hedison, who began his career using his given name Al Hedison, was a native of Providence, Rhode Island, and discovered his passion for theater at Brown University. He studied under Sanford Meisner at The Neighborhood Playhouse and Lee Strasberg at The Actors Studio, and was soon performing Off Broadway alongside Uta Hagen and Michael Redgrave (Hedison performed Off Broadway in 1956’s A Month in the Country under Redgrave’s direction).

Okay, pump the breaks… We knew there had been talks of rebooting 1986’s The Fly (which is itself a reboot of Kurt Neumann’s 1958 film of the same name) with Sleight director J.D. Dillard at the helm and serving as the script’s co-writer. We covered the news way back in April of 2017 (link below). […] The post Will 2019 Be the Year of The Fly? appeared first on Dread Central.

Geena Davis will celebrate her 63rd birthday on January 21, 2019. Davis has had a nearly 35-year career in film and television and it all began because of the comic way she filled out a pair of underwear in the classic comedy “Tootsie.” Davis was an aspiring model and actress when director Sydney Pollack cast her and she drew huge laughs as Dustin Hoffman’s dressing room mate who doesn’t know he is really a man. She thereby exercises and walks around the dressing room in just a bra and panties causing Hoffman’s character great discomfort.

Back when interracial marriage was a shady topic (are those dark days coming back?) the U.S. military had some adjustment issues. Full integration of the ranks didn’t remove the anti- Japanese bigotry. James Michener’s novel has been transformed into a big-scale romance, with Marlon Brando coming to terms with a split in loyalty between the flag and his private life. The big shock is that the Paul Osborn’s screenplay doesn’t let the military off easy.

Many of MGM’s productions were scraping bottom in 1958, yet the studio found one more acceptable western vehicle for their last big star still on contract. Only-slightly corrupt marshal Robert Taylor edges toward a showdown with the thoroughly corrupt Richard Widmark in an economy item given impressive locations and the sound direction of John Sturges.

For his next trick, filmmaker J.D. Dillard will fuse a man with a fly.
Dillard, who is generating heat with his upcoming magic-centric low-budget thriller Sleight, is making the jump to studio movies with Fox’s remake of The Fly.
Dillard is in talks to direct and co-pen the project with writing partner Alex Theurer, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The movie is a remake of the 1958 sci-fi horror classic about a scientist whose teleportation experiment goes awry and he is fused with a fly. Kurt Neuman directed the original creature feature, which launched a series of low-budget sequels.

Vincent Price starred in a ton of B horror movies throughout the course of his career. From the films he made in the ’50s, most people are familiar with The House on Haunted Hill, The Fly, and House of Wax, which are all films I enjoy watching during the Halloween seasons. They’re fantastic movies that have coincidentally all been remade over the years. But the film I wanted to focus on in this next installment of "Fun 1950s Horror Movies to Watch During Halloween" is the actor’s 1959 film, The Tingler.
The Tingler doesn't seem like it’s as popular as the other films he’s made. Whenever I bring it up with certain friends, family, and other people, I’m almost always met with a perplexed look on their face, like they’ve never heard of the movie before! I’m sure many of you are familiar with it,...

Stop! Don't touch that dial... if you like your atom-age propaganda straight up, MGM has the movie for you, an expensive 1946 docu-drama that became 'the official story' for the making of the bomb. The huge cast includes Brian Donlevy, Robert Walker, Tom Drake, Audrey Totter, Hume Cronyn, Hurd Hatfield, and Joseph Calleia. How trustworthy is the movie? It begins by showing footage of a time capsule being buried -- that supposedly contains the film we are watching. Think about that. Mom, Apple Pie, the Flag and God are enlisted to argume that we should stop worrying and love the fact that bombs are just peachy-keen dandy. Today is Vincent Price’s 104th Birthday! Price was born here in St. Louis on this date in 1911 and is the most iconic movie star to hail from our city. Price, who died October 25th 1993, was also a gourmand, author, stage actor, speaker, world-class art collector, raconteur, and all-around Renaissance man. Vincent Price was simply one of the most remarkable people of the 20th Century. Four years ago we had the opportunity to celebrate his 100th birthday and St. Louis was the place to do it. I teamed up with Cinema St. Louis to present Vincentennial, The Vincent Price 100th Birthday Celebration, an event that lasted through much of the Spring of 2011. The following year Vincentennial won two coveted Rondo Awards, one for “Best Fan Event” and a second for myself as “Monster Kid of the Year” for directing the event. The Rondo Awards are prestigious Fan Awards given out...

The St. Louis Globe-Democrat is a monthly newspaper run by Steve DeBellis, a well know St. Louis historian, and it’s the largest one-man newspaper in the world. The concept of The Globe is that there is an old historic headline, then all the articles in that issue are written as though it’s the year that the headline is from. It’s an unusual concept but the paper is now in its 27th successful year! Steve and I collaborated in 2011 on an all-Vincent Price issue of The Globe and he has asked me to write a regular monthly movie-related column. Since there is no on-line version of The Globe, I will be posting all of my articles here at We Are Movie Geeks. Since this month’s St. Louis Globe-Democrat is written as if it’s 1959, I decided to write about two of my favoririte films from that...

The holiday shopping season officially kicks off tonight and we know it can be difficult to find presents for horror fans that seem to have everything. To help make things easier, we’ve put together the initial list of our holiday gift suggestions, which include cannibal wine, classic horror shirts, vinyl figures and Blu-ray collections.
While a handful of these items are only available at select websites, you should be able to find some pretty good sales on other items starting tonight. Specifically, Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart will have big sales on Blu-ray/DVD titles and video games. We’d like to give Tamika Jones a big thanks for helping put this guide together.

Far too often we throw around the phrase "horror icon" or "horror legend"; however, there is no disputing the fact that Vincent Price absolutely deserves to be described with both of those handles. And today, to celebrate Scream Factory's launch of The Vincent Price Collection (review), we count down our Top 10 Vincent Price Films.
Well known to mainstream, non-horror fans as the voice in the legendary Michael Jackson song "Thriller," Vincent Price was indeed the face of horror for quite some time. He was incredibly chilling with a voice that simply oozed horror. And it's for those enviable traits, and the fact that he spent so much of his life dedicated to the horror genre, that we honor Vincent Price with his own personal Top 10 list!

It has long been a known fact that Hollywood’s well of ideas has run dry. The box office success of countless retreads, remakes, reboots and updates (whatever you want to label them) only serves to condemn the movie-going public as accomplices in this crime of imagination. Yet for every rule there is an exception and, while some would be reluctant to admit it, Hollywood has indeed produced some remakes worthy of their original’s legacy. This list counts down the top five horror remakes that achieved the impossible: they did not suck…

Fast And Furious 6
After a Star Trek movie made by people who seem to hate Star Trek and a Superman film that was embarrassed of its own lineage, it's great to see a blockbuster that has the courage of its convictions.
Unlike those self-loathers, FF6 delivered the goods by steadfastly staying true to its ridiculous roots, and somehow managed to outdo its own pistonheaded, action-hungry blueprint. It gives you everything you'd expect, providing that consists of wonderfully daft plotting, characters who are always in the right/wrong place at the right/wrong time and tons of spectacular stunts and action. It does everything it can to entertain, with an almost admirable logic-be-damned attitude. Such as Michelle Rodriguez's presence – surely her character died back in the fourth instalment? Yes, but she was great fun so she's been exhumed.

“Help me!” The Fly shocked 1950s audiences, but you may not realize that the “Merchant of Menace” Vincent Price is more of a supporting character (he still gets top billing) and that David Hedison is the titular fly. The technology may be very 1950s but the Fly makeup is still very effective and the transfer is great. Andre Delambre (David “Al” Hedison) is dead. A night watchman found him in the hydraulic press at the Delambre factory; both his head and hand had been liquefied into a bloody mess (really quite gruesome considering that this is from 1958). His wife Helene (Patricia Owens) was seen running from the scene. She calls his brother Francois (Vincent Price) to come...

When I was a little kid, the original The Fly scared the crap out of me. Then, later, when I wrote the Star Trek and Justice League franchises in comics, I felt a morbid and uneasy fascination with the transporter idea, which I’d always thought had a greater potential for disaster than deliverance. But I never did much with it, because my early Vincent Price-induced trauma left me with zero interest in writing about steaming piles of misshapen, dying flesh. So I never thought I’d see the day when I’d write these words:
We need teleportation. Badly. And we need it now.
Why am I bending your digital ear with this?
Well, another day I never thought I’d see is the one when the number of Americans who self-identify as Geeks would outnumber Americans who give a flying rat’s ass about what happens to the Us Postal Service.

Hitchcock's Vertigo may have dominated 1958, but that year was full of other films about fear and loathing. Here's Aliya's top 10...
There are so many things to be scared of. Apart from the obvious perils, such as large spiders, venomous snakes, and dentists, there are less tangible things to panic about. Fear of growing old. Fear of falling into poverty. Fear of thermonuclear war.
In 1958, Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo was released. It’s very good at making the watcher feel very uncomfortable, through the camera angles and the great score by Bernard Herrmann. But it’s not just the audience who gets to feel scared; it’s there in the script too. Scottie (played by James Stewart) suffers from vertigo, but he’s also afraid of his past, and of the pain of loss. He’s been hurt so badly before that he’ll...

Throughout the history of horror cinema, there have been many a horror icon; actors whose memorable portrayal of villains and dedication to the genre creates a legacy that outlives them. There’s Bela Lugosi, Lon Chaney (Senior and junior), Christopher Lee, Boris Karloff, Peter Cushing. But, while I am fond of Lee and Karloff, Vincent Price will always be my favorite. The way Price carried himself in his movies; his tall lanky body that seemed to walk like a skeleton on stilts and that Shakespearian voice of his that made even lines like “Terminate mildew stains and soap scum with Tilex!” (which he uttered in an ad for the cleaning product) sound menacing and grandiose.
In Vincent Price Presents Vol. 3 (which collects 4 issues from Blue Water comics’ ongoing series) Price is front and center playing a Cryptkeeper-like host who introduces each tale and sometimes even stars in them. Even though...

Did you know that Christopher Lee and Vincent Price share the same birthday? Vincent Price would have been 102 years old today, and I have a list of his films you should check out, along with an embedded version of House on Haunted Hill that you can watch for free.
While many remember Vincent Price for Edward Scissorhands, The Fly, and the Corman-produced Poe adaptations, there are plenty of lesser-known classics. For those of you haven’t seen The Last Man on Earth, I highly suggest watching it. You’ll notice how similar it is to the modern zombie story and looks like it served as inspiration for George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. Here are some other Price films that you may want to check out:
House of Wax, The Tingler, Tales of Terror, Twice-Told Tales, The Comedy of Terrors, The Masque of the Red Death, Witchfinder General,...

Here's a Planet Fury-approved selection of notable genre DVD releases for the months of February and March 2013.
The Blob (1958) Criterion Collection Blu-ray & DVD Available Now
This entertaining low-budget favorite gets some well-deserved respect from the folks at Criterion. A gelatinous creature from outer space begins to devour the inhabitants of a small town. Each time it consumes a new body, it grows bigger. A couple of teens (including the wooden Steve McQueen) attempt to warn the town and save the population from certain blech! Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr. directs the mayhem with a sure hand while Bart Sloane's great special effects still pack a punch. Followed by the bizarre comedy sequel, Son of Blob, in the early ’70s (directed by Larry Hagman!) and a great, underrated remake in 1988 by Chuck Russell.

Frankenweenie
Written by John August, story by Tim Burton and Leonard Ripps, based on Tim Burton’s short film Frankenweenie
Directed by Tim Burton
USA 2012 imdb
A feature-length, black and white 3-D animated expansion of his original black and white live action short film, Frankenweenie is an amazing technical achievement by Tim Burton. The film looks fantastic and for once the 3-D isn’t just an excuse for Hollywood to dip their sticky fingers into your wallet. Rather than constantly thrusting objects into into your face like most 3-D horror films, Burton uses the technology to create a film environment to draw in the audience, apparently taking his cue from Henry Selick’s immersive animated masterpiece Coraline. Characters are blocked like in a theatre piece, moving from upstage to downstage as necessary. In the film’s best sequence, Burton draws the audience into the middle of a burning building, pulling...

Vincentennial, the Vincent Price 100th Birthday Celebration, which took place here in St. Louis last Spring and was covered in depth at We Are Movie Geeks, has been nominated for a Rondo Award for “Best Fan Event”. Now in their tenth year, The Rondo Awards are prestigious Fan Awards given out annually for the year’s best horror-related stuff–movies, magazines, articles, toys, etc. The Rondos are completely fan-based; nominees are selected by horror film fans and focus specifically on the horror genre. The awards are debated at The Classic Horror Film Board and presented at the Wonderfest Hobby Expo in May in Louisville, Ky. The awards are named for Rondo Hatton, the 1940′s-era character actor whose glandular disease resulted in a misshapen face and brutish appearance (an article I wrote for Wamg about Mr. Hatton can be found Here)

The Letter (1929) Direction: Jean de Limur Cast: Jeanne Eagels, O.P. Heggie, Reginald Owen, Herbert Marshall, Irene Browne, Lady Tsen Mei, Tamaki Yoshiwara Screenplay: Garrett Fort; from W. Somerset Maugham's 1927 play The Letter and having read quite a bit about Broadway star Jeanne Eagels' remarkable talent, I was expecting to find at least a modicum of interest in Jean de Limur's 1929 version of Maugham's crime-of-passion melodrama. I'm sorry to report I was greatly disappointed, even though Garrett Fort's screenplay is quite similar to the one used in the Wyler version. Stuck on a Malayan rubber plantation with her aloof older husband (Reginald Owen), British subject Leslie Crosbie (Eagels) finds affection...

An almost spectral-looking 2011 portrait by artist Rich Bernal of Vincent Price as he appeared in The Raven. Commissioned for the St. Louis Vincentennial.
2011 is the birthday centennial for Vincent Price, and the anniversary was celebrated by various magazines, blogs, film screenings and other events that honored the late actor. It was most memorably observed in Price’s hometown of St. Louis, where the Vincentennial was marked by a series of events organized primarily by Price fan Tom Stockman. Local newspaper reporter Raymond Castile and I attended many of the screenings, interviews, museum and gallery events in the more-than-month-long observance of the multifaceted man many think of as the “King of Horror.”
Raymond talked with a number of fans from around the world about their love of Price (including myself), and their encounters with him in life or on the screen. I later talked with a number of Vincent Price’s...

There have been many portrayals of werewolves and other shapeshifting man/woman-beasts, in the media of film, but I can’t say there has been many memorable ones. With The Wolf Man (1941) Lon Chaney Jr. transformed into a werewolf at the full moon, and created one of the three most famous horror icons of the modern day. Werewolf fiction as since been an exceptionally diverse genre with ancient folkloric roots and manifold modern re-interpretations – from high shcool basketball players to American tourists hiking through the UK. Here is the list of my personal favourites.
#13- El aullido del diablo/ Howl of the Devil (1987)
Directed by: Paul Naschy
Paul Naschy, also known as Jacinto Molina Alvarez, was a Spanish movie actor, screenwriter, and director working primarily in horror films. His portrayals of numerous classic horror figures—the wolfman, the hunchback, Count Dracula, the mummy—have earned him recognition as the Spanish Lon Chaney.

“There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.” – The Twilight Zone first season opening narration

Vincent Price, the horror icon that needs no introduction, was born 100 years ago today, May 27, 1911. The St. Louis native and actor made quite a name for himself portraying an array of great characters in over 50 years of acting. Though the man with the twisted mustache and arched eyebrows unfortunately passed away in 1993, Price left behind a rich film legacy. The Fly, House of Wax, The House on Haunted Hill, The Pit and The Pendulum, The Abominable Dr. Phibes, are just some of the many horror films that Price became known for. Though he strayed from the horror genre at times, it is his fright features that fans most remember. Yet, Price was also known to be an avid art collector and an expert chef. This classically trained actor became even more popular later in his life with the inclusion of his creepy voice in the Michael Jackson music video “Thriller...

The all-Vincent Price issue of the St. Louis Globe-Democrat is hot off the presses!. The Globe is a monthly paper run by Steve DeBellis, a well know St. Louis historian, and it’s the largest one-man newspaper in the world. The concept of the Globe is that there is an old historic headline, then all the articles in that issue are written as if it’s the year that the headline is from. Steve’s been publishing this paper since 1986 (it was called the St. Louis Inquirer until 1994 when he bought the naming rights to the Globe, which had been a major daily for over 100 years until it folded in 1986).
Steve is and last summer I was introduced to Steve, a huge Vincent Price fan, last summer and we collaborated on an all-Vincent Price issue of the Globe-Democrat to tie into the Vincentennial. This issue deviates from the...

The Vincentennial Vincent Price Film Festival kicks off May 19th with a screening of the 1958 horror classic The Fly at the Missouri History Museum. The buddy cop sub-genre is always a hard task to nail as witnessed in Kevin Smith’s groan-inducing Cop Out. The key is getting two likeable leads that can play off each other and who can bring a balance to the predicaments that come their way. The best of the best in this department is Running Scared with Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines. Chicago – The former Rosa Dolores Alverio, better known to audiences as Rita Moreno, has had a glorious and tempestuous journey through life and show business. One of her most notable roles is as Anita, the fiery friend of Maria in the film version of “West Side Story,” in which Moreno stops the show with the song “America.”
Moreno is also famous in show business lore for having swept the quartet of major awards, winning the Oscar (for Best Supporting Actress in West Side Story), the Tony (for “The Ritz”), the Grammy (for “The Electric Company” soundtrack) and the Emmy (twice, for Variety and Drama). Her other bling includes the Golden Globe (also for West Side Story) and two presidential citations.
Not bad for a little girl who moved from Puerto Rico to New York City when she was five years old. After getting her early training in dance, Moreno cut...
